Since 1956 Freddy Hirsch has manufactured, distributed, and marketed products
and services to thousands of independent and retail butcheries, meat processing
factories and poultry factories in Southern Africa.
Products include spices, seasoning, sausage casings, food processing equipment
and packaging, with most ingredients manufactured in a Cape Town plant. Various
equipment and commodities are sourced from major international principals.
Freddy Hirsch distributes over 50 tons of product everyday to a customer base
that stretches from South Africa to Nigeria.

•
Unnecessary overheads
Local distribution was insourced with a fleet of only 30 vehicles
Too many damaged goods (due to a lack of fitted bins and cages in the vehicles)
Regional distribution was outsourced to a number of independent logistics service providers
Approach
• Freddy Hirsch senior management was involved from the very beginning
• A complete study was conducted on national deliveries to optimise branch locations, systems,
processes and routes in order to streamline costs
• A service level analysis established areas in need of improvement that could better fit customer
needs and company values
• An appropriate solution was presented to Freddy Hirsch for their input and approval
Solution
• The entire Freddy Hirsch distribution layout was adapted to fall in line with SkyNet’s network
to become more efficient and cost-effective
• SkyNet’s extensive network was utilised to meet the solution requirements
• Some Regional branches were converted to Cash and Carry and Collect stores, confident that
SkyNet could deliver from major branches to a national customer base
• Dedicated fleets were utilised to distribute within major centres
• A dedicated contracts manager was appointed to oversee the entire account
• Cages and bins were implemented for the transportation of fragile goods
Implementation
• An implementation plan was prepared with Freddy Hirsch senior management
• In-house staff and managers were appointed at Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban Freddy
Hirsch branches to check, label and load stock – as well as track waybills and communicate
with clients
• New vehicles were purchased and added to the dedicated fleet with Freddy Hirsch branding
• A Standard Operating Procedure was signed off and agreed upon by all parties
