A NOTE FROM PAT GORMAN
Tomorrow, July 6, marks a special date in St. Maria Goretti history. Not only is it the designated feast day of our
patroness who was canonized in 1950, it is also the 20th anniversary of groundbreaking for the newest parish in the
Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana. Twenty years ago? My, has time flown!
Think about it—in 1995, the Internet was still mostly on dial-up connections but was largely unused. Only 3% of
online users had ever signed on to the World Wide Web. Online businesses were sprouting, including Amazon.com,
craigslist, Match.com, and eBay. Microsoft released Windows 95 and Internet Explorer. If you happened to have a
cell phone, it was likely bolted into your car, so you could return calls from your “pager.” If you were really lucky, you
might have gotten the Motorola MicroTac “flip phone”, so you were not stuck in your car (and could look really cool).
SMG has been very blessed to have grown so much since then. Here are some key milestones for those folks who
are newer to SMG:

Church Mortgage Debt ~ $1,736,000
Along with growth, however, comes an increase in expenses—primarily due to expansion of ministry activities, the
increasing cost to maintain aging facilities, and old-fashioned inflation. Here is a comparison of major operating
costs over the last 15 years:
2000 - Annual Major Operating Expenses: $1,084,000
2003 - Annual Major Operating Expenses: $1,622,000
2006 - Annual Major Operating Expenses: $2,158,000
2011 - Annual Major Operating Expenses: $2,466,000
2014 - Annual Major Operating Expenses: $2,839,000
As I have written in the past, our major operating expenses are comprised of personnel costs (70%), repair and maintenance
(5%), and utilities (5%), which we hope to fund completely through weekly contributions. Shortfalls are covered by
fundraising, grants, and fees. For fiscal year 2016 (which started July 1), our weekly contributions goal will increase
3% to $50,400. Please pray for our continued financial stability as we strive to build God’s kingdom here in Westfield.
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with
everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our
Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin

with the Mobile Pantry from Gleaner’s Food Bank. Our first

to distribute to 150-300 households. Food not distributed
during the Mobile Pantry hours is donated to our Shepherd’s Gate Food Pantry. Our next Mobile Food Pantry is
Tuesday, August 4, 4-6 pm. If you are interested in helping
at the next Mobile Pantry or during our regular pantry
hours, send an e-mail to [email protected]. You

REFLECTION FOR THE 14th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In today’s Gospel we hear, “they took offense at him. Jesus
said to them, ‘A prophet is not without honor except in his
native place.” The townspeople did not highly regard Jesus
even with his miracles and mighty deeds. Have you ever
found yourself acting judgmentally toward someone because
of your perception of them? Were you proven wrong? Ask
God to change your heart in your perception of others.

Now is the time to enroll your children for the Parish Religious

DISCIPLESHIP
BRAD SPONHAUER—Director of Discipleship
867-3213, ext. 1151; [email protected]
“Catholic” as a Verb
This morning via Twitter, I found the following statement,
“As Catholics, we need to believe, we need to be convicted that we have something worth sharing, we have
something worth bringing others to...” What a great
statement to honestly take a few moments and think
about in our own lives. Do we believe that our faith is
just simply opinion? Do we believe that our faith is
founded on Truth? If so, then we should be willing to actually do something about it!
We see time and time again in the Bible people who
have genuine encounters with Christ. Once it happens,
they are not the same person...and perhaps even more
importantly, they cannot but help to tell others about it!
David is seen dancing with joy and singing in front of the
Ark of the Covenant. After the angel Gabriel announces
to Mary that she is conceiving God in her very womb she moves with “haste” to visit her cousin. The woman
at the well (Samaritan Woman) after speaking to Jesus
and becoming convicted that He was indeed the messiah runs to tell everyone in her village of her encounter.
What about us here at SMG? How do we express our
conviction that we have encountered Christ - truly?!?
Two primary ways: education and service. We take seriously our obligation to pass along the faith - and with the
understanding that we are always in need of spiritual
growth and formation. In service, we find ways to serve
not only those in our parish family but equally reach out
to those in need in our community.
What about you individually? Have you truly experienced an encounter with Jesus? Do you have a personal, living, relationship with Him? If you are not sure, then
maybe you would consider deepening your own formation through a bible study or through CRHP. If you
have a living relationship with Him, then being Catholic
should be about doing something as a direct result of
that relationship. Because we have been loved, we have
been forgiven, we need to share it with others. Take a
look again and see if there is not an opportunity for you
to actually live out your faith by serving in a ministry here
at SMG or by volunteering at an upcoming event.
In Christ,
Brad Sponhauer

SCHOOL STUDENT OPENINGS
St. Maria Goretti School currently has student openings for Kindergarten and 6th and 8th grades for the
2015-16 school year. If you are interested, send an email to Michelle Hanlin, [email protected].
FROM THE NURSE
Medical papers: The Nurse Office is updating all
medical care plans. We are sending medical sheets
home by e-mail and in large yellow envelopes. If your
student has brought home a yellow envelope, you have
medical papers that need to be signed by you and your
doctor and returned by the first day of school.
EpiPen news: The Nurse Office now carries a “stock”
EpiPen for anaphylactic “allergy” emergencies. This does
NOT take the place of student’s prescription EpiPens but
is available for emergencies such as multiple bee stings
or a student experiencing a new allergic reaction. The
EpiPen is stored on the nurse office door and all staff
are trained. If the EpiPen is used, parents and an ambulance will be called, and your student would be taken to an emergency room. Parents, when filling your Epinephrine prescriptions, make sure the device expires
after May 2016 to last through the school year. Also, if
you want your student to carry an EpiPen, you must
have a doctor’s order for “permission to carry.” We will
talk to your student and make sure your student is
trained in proper use and administration of the EpiPen.
Hepatitis A requirement: All incoming kindergarten
students must have two Hepatitis A immunizations at
least six months apart.
