“Simplifying the Use of Color and Composition”
Abstract
Oil & Acrylic
John Sirois
Saturday May 21, 2016
10:00 - 4:00
Union Mill Studio, Peterborough, NH
Indoor/outdoor
Class Description: This workshop will explore the use of color and composition in painting in oils
& acrylics. He prefers an outdoor location but has inside space if necessary. Limit 8 students.
John Sirois is an artist who paints in the Contemporary American style. As demonstrated on his
website, he has a love of color, texture and paint.
Over the years subject matter has become less important than showing the viewer the energy that
exists around a given location or still life, showing color and shapes that perhaps we miss when
we simply pass by a motif.
John has studied with various artists including, Sidney Willis, Don Stone, Lois Griffel, and the
late Charles Sovek. His work has hung in the Salmagundi Club and the National Arts club in
New York City as well as the Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, the American Artists Professional League and the Audubon Artists Society.

Quinacridone Rose
Dioxazine Purple

If you have colors that are comparable to these we can work with it.
Student grade paints are acceptable although artist professional grade are easier to
use and the strength of the color extend their use. If using student grade I suggest
Winton by Windsor Newton.
In Acrylic you can get most of these colors in Golden or Liquitex. I use and prefer Golden but you may have to rely on other manufacturers for some colors.
Oil painters should bring ODORLESS mineral spirits, large double turp cups and
or jars to store it in, paper towels. (Viva are best but Bounty works well)
BRUSHES
An assortment of various size Filbert style brushes (2,4,6,8 or larger). I also use
craft brushes. These are available at Michaels or hardware stores sized at ½ inch,
1 inch, or 1 ½ inch.
MISC
Paper pallets or other suitable palate. I use hefty Styrofoam plates. These can be
purchased at Market Basket.
Plastic pallet knives are handy.
French style easel
Bug Spray

Hat with a good size visor to reduce eye fatigue
Optional: portable light, preferably battery operated so we don’t have cords. You can find
them on Amazon for under $20.
