EuroVelo is a project of the
European Cyclists’ Federation, made up of 12 routes,
totalling over 66,000 km, of which about 45,000 km are
already in place.
The Baltic States cross two routes:
* No. 10 - the Baltic Sea Circuit (“Hansering”): in Lithuania it
is identical with the Sea coast cycle trail (LT5);in Estonia it is
signed as the National Route No. 1; for Latvia you can find
the cycling description on “Latvia by Bicycle”* No. 11 - Athens - North Cape: only marked on Estonia’s
National Route No. 3. If you want to discover it in Latvia and
Lithuania, you can read the BaltiCCycle.eu route descriptions
“Riga-Vilnius by bicycle” (LT3/LV3) and Warsaw-Vilnius (LT1)

Von Boulogne-sur-Mer bis St. Petersburg verbindet der Europa-Radweg Euroroute R1 auf über
3500 Kilometern die Menschen, die Natur und
die Kultur neun europäischer Länder.
An der litauischen Küste fällt er mit dem “Küstenradweg
Litauen” (LT5) zusammen, bis Riga mit “Burgenroute” LV1,
der EuroVelo-Route Nr. 10, In Estland ist die Nationale Route
Nr. 4 als R1 ausgeschildert.

The targets - Die Ziele
The cities
Starting points - or your way - will be one of the very different
3 capitals. The biggest is Riga, with a busy Old Town and the
specialty of Art Nouveau architecture (19th cc.). Tallinn meets
you with its medieval city wall and the Old Town. Vilnius is
a cross road of cultures and religions close to the border to
Belarus, dating back to the 17th/18th cc.
In all 3 capitals there are city tours and day trips to the nature
by bikes available. Look for “local” on www.balticcycle.eu
Die Städte
Startpunkt - oder zumindest auf dem Weg - liegt eine
der drei sehr verschiedenen Hauptstädte. Die größte
ist Riga, mit eine quirligen Altstadt und der Besonderheit der Jugendstilarchitektur (19. Jh). In Tallinn hingegen
wartet eine mittelalterliche Stadt hinter der Mauer, und
Vilnius ist “ganz anders” - eine Ort, in dem sich Kulturen
und Religionen unweit der Grenze zu Belarus treffen. Seine
Altstadt geht auf das 17./18. Jahrhundert zurück.

BETWEEN EAST AND WEST
Is it Europe or already Russia? Well, to be honest, it issomewhere in between.
The only fact that unites the three countries - Lithuania, Latvia
and Estonia - is that they have been part of the Soviet Union
and the Russian Czarist Empire.
And… that they have no mountains.
Despite of this, all the three countries are different. Different
languages, different religions, and different experiences create more separating than uniting to the peoples. That even
the traveller must realise.
Where to go? I devide the “Baltics” in two main regions:
“the West”: - the blue line - that is the coast with the Curonian
Spit in Lithuania, 600 km of sand beach in Latvia, and the often
stony Northern riffs in Estonia.
A negative point for a tour along the coast is that the landscape
doesn’t change. Itt is flat all the way.
“the East”: - the green belt - means hilly landscapes of lakes,
forests, wooden houses and the border to Belorussia.
A negative point for a tour in the East is that there isno
sea and sometimes - big distances (50km of forest...) and
weaker infrastructure.
Well, you might think, the best then is a combination of routes in
the East in the West. Therefore, it’s up to your choice, whether
you prefer a long distance route or several short trips from the
centres. We briefly present to you all the possibilities on this map.

CYCLING IN THE BALTIC STATES! HOW?
1 - Still “real” (separate, asphalted) bicycle paths are rare.
2 - In Estonia there is a network of fully marked cycle routes,
thus they are on usual roads.
3 - There are still many gravel roads (nickname: “riffleboard”).
They are marked in yellow colour on local maps.
4 - “Deadly” you may name the traffic on the main roads
(marked with “A”) and around the big towns, specially the
capitals.=> see the “black roads” on the map!
5 - For your successful bicycle tour find a paved secondary
road without much traffic!

... a new bicycle path and a flat landscape - despite of the
huge sand dunes on the Curonian spit - makes it an easy
cycling in this historic region.
[LT2] “Nieman cycle trail” Šilutė (Heydekrug) - Kaunas - Vilnius
This popular route connects the sea resorts with the capital

[LV2] Gauja National Park
The valley of the Gauja river makes it a special place. And
the castles and manors let you look back the centuries.

[EE1] Estnische Inseln & Küste
East of Tallinn is the Lahemaa National park, by word “bay
land”, where you might spend some days to get to know
the bays, nature, fishermen’s villages and manor houses. A
similar experience is waiting for you on the National cycling
route No. 1 all along the coast.

plus the back lands with rivers and historical townlets.

The Estonian East is famous as resort for Winter sports. Here
you may find the highest peak in the Baltic States, the “Big
Egg Hill”

Thus there is already a high quality route description existing,
this is still an unknown border region in the triangle RussiaPoland-Lithuania. Maybe because it was a “closed region” in
Soviet times?
ZWISCHEN OST UND WEST
Europa oder Russland? Wenn man ehrlich ist: irgendetwas
dazwischen.
Das einzige, was die drei Staaten Litauen, Lettland und
Estland gemeinsam haben ist, dass sie Teil der Sowjetunion
und des russischen Zarenreiches waren.
Und: das sie keine Berge haben.
Ansonsten sind die drei Staaten sehr unterschiedlich:
verschiedene Sprachen, verschiedene Religionen,
unterschiedliche Erfahrungen erzeugen mehr trennendes als
gemeinsames. Das merkt auch der Reisende.
Ich teile das “Baltikum” im wesentlichen in zwei Regionen ein:
“der Westen” - die blaue Linie - das heißt die Küste mit der
Kurischen Nehrung in Litauen, 600 km Sandstrand in Lettland
und den Inseln und oft steinigen Stränden in Estland.
Negativ für eine Radtour immer an der Küste: Die Landschaft
ist immer gleich, flach und wenig abwechslungsreich.
“der Osten” - das grüne Band - das sind hügelige
Seenlandschaften, Wälder, Holzhäuser, die Grenze zu (Weiß-)
Russland.
Negativ für eine Radtour im Osten: Kein Meer und sehr
manchmal große Abstände (50 km Wald...), schlechtere
Infrastruktur

Wer ist hier “ich”?

“Baltikum” - natürlich per Fahrrad. Seit 1999 lebe ich hier und
versuche, das Radfahren voranzubringen.
RADFAHREN IM BALTIKUM! GEHT DAS?
1. “Richtige” (seperate, asphaltierte) Radwege gibt es immer
noch selten
2. In Estland gibt es ein voll ausgeschildertes Netz von
Radrouten, diese sind meistens auf ganz normalen Straßen
3. Es gibt immer noch viele Schotter-Rüttel-Pisten (Spitzname: “Waschbrett”); auf den hiesigen Karten sind sie in
gelber Farbe markiert.
4. “Tödlich” ist der Verkehr auf den Hauptstraßen (mit “A”
markiert) und um die großen Städte, besonders die Hauptstädte, => siehe auch die “schwarzen Straßen” auf der Karte;
5. Erfolgsrezept für eine Radtour in den Baltischen Staaten:
asphaltierte Nebenstraßen ohne viel Verkehr finden!

Diese beliebte Route, verbindet die ehemals deutsche Küste
mit der Hauptstadt Vilnius im Osten, damit zwei verschiedene Kulturen.

Das Flusstal der Gauja ist einfach sehenswert. Nicht nur

[EE1] Estnische Inseln & Küste
Östlich von Tallinn liegt der Lahemaa Nationalpark, wörtlich
“Buchtenland”, in dem man auch mehrere Tage verbringen
kann, sich Buchten, Natur, Fischerdörfer und Gutshöfe anschauen kann. Ähnlich kann man mehrere Hundert Kilometer
auf der nationalen Route Nr. 1 an der Küste entlang radeln

Der Weg nach Süden führt in tiefe, von Flüssen durchzogene

Spannend ist die Kombination aus Küste und Sandstrand

Der estnische Südosten ist beliebt/bekannt als
Wintersportgebiet. Hier befindet sich auch die höchste
Erhebung im Baltikum, der “große Eierberg”.
