Road Safety
Headteacher
We have been asked by Tim Watts, the lollipop man,
to request that children do not ride their bikes and
scooters when crossing the road. Thank you.
The words community and participation spring to
my mind when we reflect upon recent weeks at
Estcots and write our newsletter. Everybody in
school has been involved in some way throughout
our healthy schools week or schools trips, plays,
preparing for concerts or planning and coming to
our summer fair.
Also, we have received a complaint about the parking
in Bourg de Peage Avenue and cars turning around.
Concerns have been raised as cars are parking on the
pavement and clipping the kerb when they turn
around. Could you please not turn around in Bourg
de Peage Avenue at the beginning and end of the
school day as the safety of our children is paramount.
Please could you also not park in Warburton Close as
access for emergency vehicles to the residential home
for the elderly is needed.
Your co-operation in these issues is very much
appreciated.
Reports
All children will spend a day in their new classes on
Friday 4th July to get to know their new teachers.
There will be a Celebration of children’s work and an
opportunity to collect your child’s report on Friday
18th July at 2.00 pm.
A breakdown of your child’s attainment and progress
will be included within the report.

Science Week – Monday 7 – Friday 11 July
Science Week will take place 7th – 11th July. Children
will be taking part in lots of scientific activities and if
possible we would request that they bring in a white
oversized shirt that can be their lab coat for the week.
You will see that our newsletter is packed full of all
the fantastic events from healthy schools week, our
sports day and PFA Summer fair, school trips and
individual achievements.
A big thank you to the PFA who worked tirelessly to
organise the Summer Fair, and to parents and
children who provided donations and came along to
support it.
£2855
Thank you to the PFA for funding our Science
workshops during science week next week. It
means all children will receive a workshop. The
cost to do this is £1000 so we are very grateful for
their support.
I hope you are all enjoying the new school website
thank you to all of you who have taken the time to
feedback many positive comments. If you have not
already had a look here it is….

Please do take the time to write a comment on the
tear off slip at the end of the newsletter about the
website and return to the school office. Your
feedback is important to us.
Elodie’s Fund Raiser
"Elodie ran to Forest Row to raise money for
Chanzige, a school in Tanzania which is currently
without any electricity and where the children have
little access to pens, books and paper etc.
A family friend, Philippa, started this charity and
Elodie wanted to do something to help after
becoming pen pals with Irene, an 8 year old from
Chanzige school.
Tennis Tournament
On Wednesday 11th June, Estcots took part in a
Tennis Tournament at East Grinstead Tennis Club.
I was very impressed with the children's positivity,
attitude and team spirit. All of the children tried
their best on what was a difficult competition. Well
done to all involved.
Mrs J Wilkins
Elodie ran along the old railway track from East
Grinstead to Forest Row. After completing it she said
"I made myself not give up and kept saying 'my
friend Irene' while I was running". Elodie only
stopped for a quick stretch half way along and a gulp
of water and completed the run in record time.
She has raised over £450.00 so far and which will pay
for small whiteboards, pens and erasers for each of
the students.
Well done Elodie!
Heidi Crowther’s Trampoline Success
Heidi qualified for National grade C Trampoline
competitions as a result of two solid routines at
Gillingham. Her score of 52.3 was above the 51.0
required to take her into national grade. She may
now find herself competing in competitions in
Birmingham, Bath or even Newcastle as she
progresses.
For a child in Primary School to reach this standard is
very difficult and is down to her commitment and
hours of training it has taken since she was 4 years
old. “We are very proud of her achievement in her
sport and are grateful for all of the support and
interest that Estcots has taken in Heidi's progress” Mr P Crowther
Area Sports 2014
Area Sports took place on Wednesday 25th June at Sackville School. Estcots competed against 5 other large schools.
All of the children who took part were a credit to the school. Their athletic performance was excellent, their team
spirit and behaviour was also outstanding.
We were awarded second place, only losing to another school by a few points. It was a fantastic afternoon.
Thank you to Sackville PE staff and students for organizing the event.
Estcots Sports Week 2014
Sports Week opened with a fantastic dance routine performed in assembly by Year 6 pupils, setting the
tone for a fun filled, jam packed week of games, cooking, activities and new sporting experiences.
From Early Years to Year 6, everyone had the opportunity to be active – from aerobics to curling,
inflatables to pop lacrosse training – and to try something different.
Early Years particularly enjoyed Tri-Golf and Greek food tasting (along with their special Greek visitor)
while Years 1 and 2 loved the obstacle course, egg and spoon and running races.
Further up the school, hockey, rounders and kwik cricket tournaments were held, alongside Tag Rugby and
Pop Lacrosse coaching which proved very popular with everyone!
Parachute games, volleyball, stoolball, wake up and shake up (led by the children!) and athletics were
enjoyed by all with Sackville student sports leaders providing additional support.
Finally, everyone had the chance to plan, prepare and enjoy food from the World Cup Football country
draw; 6O baked Brazilian empanadas, 5P made Croatian Ajvar (an aubergine/pepper based salsa) while 1H
loved nachos, 4B(G) turned their hands to sushi and 4L's bread amazed everyone!
A great week has been had by everyone.
Design-a-mascot Competition 2014
On an annual basis, we at Sussex CCC, run a Countywide Cricket themed design competition, which any young
person up to the age of Year 6 can enter, free of charge, for the chance to win some top Cricket related prizes.
The competition operates a different theme each year, inviting children to design their very own mascot, linked to
the related theme.
When entered the designs are judged and the best five designs are informed they’ve made the top five, at which
point the designers have approximately 10 days to make their design come to life in any way they choose. The
five designers construct, innovate and find fantastic ways of making their pictures on paper, become a reality and
once complete these designs are ranked in order from one to five. This is the order that determines, who wins
what from the prize list.
2014 saw the competition revolve around the main theme of Sussex CCC reaching 175 years old, and the
celebrations associated with the anniversary. We received 443 entries in total from across the County, with
designs coming in all colours, shapes, sizes and ideas. The final five designers came from five different schools,
spread across the County
Leah Bush was one of these top five designers, with her mascot “Stump the Superstar” which comprised of an
elaborate combination of a Cricket bat, complete with polystyrene balls, fantastic added detail to the front of the
bat, as well as a separate tower of Cups and trophies to showcase the 175th anniversary. Leah’s design was not
only unique and well thought out, but innovative and well-constructed, and she even included a photo page,
illustrating how she had put it all together and made it.
As a result of Leah’s design and hard work making the mascot, Leah finished the competition in 3 rd place and
thoroughly deserves her prize. I very much enjoyed seeing Leah’s initial design and was even more excited to see
the finished design come to life, through a lot more hard-work. I’m delighted to be able to give Leah a prize for all
her efforts and hope to see her name pop up in future competitions we run across the County.

Ardingly
Phase 3 went to Ardingly for their school trip. They took part in two different water activities, they were kayaking
and raft building. 6B was split into two groups one group did raft building first, the other kayaking first. In raft
building we were separated into small groups, we then had to build a raft using four planks of wood, four barrels and
strong string. In our groups we then raced with the rafts.
Then we swapped groups, in kayaking we got in our single kayaks and played lots of different kayaking games. For
one of the games if you were still on at the end of the game you had to do a forfeit, the forfeit was to stand up in
your kayak (everyone fell in).
In the afternoon, we had to make 2d representations of the Titanic using anything we could find in the forest (e.g.
sticks, leaves and anything else we could use). We had 40 minutes which caused a lot of stress. After that long day it
was then time to go back.

Phase 1 Trip to Brighton Sealife Centre
Phase 1 had a wonderful time at the Sealife Centre in Brighton where we saw and learnt about lots of different sea
creatures including sharks, seahorses and turtles. Not only did we get to see the creatures but we also took part in
turtle feeding time. We really enjoyed having chips on the beach as part of our picnic and walking along the pier.
"I loved looking at the gigantic sting ray because it was sooo big" Imogen D'Albertanson 1H
“I saw sharks and stingray as I walked through the tunnel, I loved the piranhas and the octopus was very cleverit even had toys" Jenny Jeffery 1H
Early Years Trip to Hastings
On Wednesday 25th June the EYFS children went on their first trip and had a fantastic time in Hastings. We visited
the Blue Reef Aquarium and enjoyed seeing the different sea creatures - we really loved seeing the sharks and
stingrays and watching them being fed! The weather for our trip was excellent and meant that we could spend some
time on the beach. We enjoyed collecting the pebbles and stones and went down to the water front to throw some
pebbles into the sea!
Summer Fair
The PFA would like to thank everyone who came to the Summer Fair last Saturday.
Despite the rain disrupting some of our plans, the day went really well and we hope lots of fun was had by all. Thank
you also to everyone who helped with the organisation and preparation and those who helped on the day – it was
much appreciated!
Watch this space to see how much we raised!
