ICELAND
Poole’s Pies, the UK’s oldest pie and pastry
brand, has been awarded the sole supply
contract for fruit pies and crumbles to frozen
food giant, Iceland. The agreement follows
Wigan-based Poole’s launch of a new frozen

new Managing Director, Neil Court-Johnston.
Icefresh Foods, specialists in developing licensed desserts and own label products, are proud to

After two successful years adding to their licensed brand portfolio, Brand Manager Scott Wilson
commented: “After great success in own brand, Icefresh Foods saw huge potential in the licensed
food market, especially in the frozen dessert sector. And after proving our success with household
names like Weight Watchers, we knew we could create top quality products for other brands.
Over the past two years the team here at Icefresh, has partnered with brands such as Peppa Pig,
Hello Kitty and Thomas the Tank Engine, to create and market tasty, quality products. The shortlist
nomination for the Peppa Pig Ice Cream Lollies proves how much hard work and effort the whole
team has to dedicate to getting the best possible product on shelf.”
All four ice cream lollies, Thomas the Tank Engine, Peppa Pig and her brother George, along with
tween and teen favourite, Hello Kitty, launched in stores in March and have been designed to be a

The Devon Paras Raise £1000.00 in the Midnight
Madness Dartmoor Charity Challenge 2012
Staff from local (Heathfield) seafood manufacturer Paramount 21 recently took part in the 2012
Midnight Madness Dartmoor 13 Mile Challenge on the 21st July 2012.
The challenge was organised by Devon Search and Rescue and entailed a 13 mile circular walk
from Princetown taking in Kings Tor Track, Yennadon Down, Older Bridge, South Hessary and
back to Princetown under the cover of darkness.
The staff at Paramount 21 kindly gave up their Saturday night to adorn wet proofs and walking
boots to raise funds for The Fisherman’s Mission.
"It was a beautiful warm summers evening with a dramatic sunset across Dartmoor, it was
a real privilege to be able to take part. All members of our team successfully completed the
walk in just less than 4 hours and look forward to the 2013 challenge." says Jessica Waller Marketing Manager.
The event was organised by the Fisherman's Mission to raise awareness and funds for fisherman
and their families. Deep sea fishing is the UK's most dangerous peacetime occupation and on
average each year 15 vessels are lost and 62 fishermen are killed or seriously injured. The
Mission provides emergency and welfare support to fishermen and their families 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They receive no government or Lottery funding and rely
almost entirely upon voluntary contributions to fund their activities.

Aunt Bessie’s announces new TV advert - Ten of the brand’s top
selling products supported by £6million advertising campaign
Family run frozen food company, Aunt Bessie’s
Limited, is launching a new TV advertising
campaign to kick start the autumn roast season.
The £6 million advertising investment, a 50%
increase in consumer support, sees the brand
supporting a massive ten products across the
multiple categories it operates in, from Yorkshire
Pudding to added-value vegetables, savoury
accompaniments and desserts. This is the first
time in its history the brand has invested in such
support across the full range.
The new live action creatives star the brand’s
elderly and much-loved comedy characters
Margaret and Mabel. The scripts highlight how
Margaret and Mabel can’t understand how busy
froz en & c h ille d f o o d s
mums put delicious, traditional meals on the
table, quickly and easily throughout the week.
Aunt Bessie’s brand new TV campaign starts on
8th October and will run until March 2013 on
national TV.
Whilst consumers are used to watching Margaret
and Mabel spying on the neighbours, the new
30 second creative sees the pair invited over
the road for dinner for the first time. Featuring
honey glazed roast parsnips, new classic homestyle gravy and irresistible Yorkshires, the mum
puts together a roasty looking chicken meal,
with Margaret and Mabel amazed she’s put the
dinner on the table in half an hour.
A second ten second creative will run from mid
October featuring the brand’s latest Yorkshire
range, Perfect for Sausage, launched last year
and then from November a new 10-second TV
ad featuring Family Apple Pie will also air, the
first time the brand’s desserts have been on air
in more than five years.
The brand, which is owned by the William
Jackson Food Group, recently launched (5th
September) a sponsorship of ITV1 show All Star
Mr & Mrs, which airs on Wednesday evenings
and Saturday daytimes. Hosted by Phillip
Schofield, the show runs for 10 weeks and pits
celebrities against their partners with the winner
awarded prize money for their chosen charity.
A series of eight sponsorship idents showcase
a range of Aunt Bessie’s products; honey-glazed
roast parsnips, sage and onion stuffing balls,
perfect for chicken and perfect for sausage
Yorkshires, jam roly poly, perfect for 2 apple
crumble, the new classic home-style gravy, as
well as carrot and swede mash. The campaign
will be integrated with ITV’s video on demand
service, with additional digital content on ITV.
com.
The Aunt Bessie’s brand, which is worth
£190million, continues to exhibit strong growth,
with a 13.9% uplift in sales (YOY value).
The TV campaigns will be complemented by an
integrated marketing campaign including press
advertising, digital and social media, consumer
PR and in-store promotions.

BFFF SUPPLIERS SEMINAR – WINDSOR THE BEST YET!
The second BFFF suppliers seminar held at
Windsor on July 23rd was the best so far!
Over 50 attendees from 34 companies – of
which 26 companies were potential new
members, listened to presentations from
Graeme and I on the Frozen Food Market and
BFFF. We then heard from Duncan Macdonald
about IFE 2013 and Tim Whitehead told us
the story about Abergavenny Fine Foods and
then gave his insight into the benefits of
membership.
We now have the feedback from the delegates
showing it has been a resounding success. 23 different companies completed the survey
response and 83% said the value of the
seminar to them was either good or very
good whilst the overall rating for the day
scored 100% which is clearly an outstanding
result. More importantly the feedback
about joining has been very positive with to
date 7 new members joining as a result of
it. We also await the outcome of a further
3 recommendations by attendees to their
boards.
We then visited the races at Windsor late that
afternoon to network further with some of us
picking up the odd winner but as usual the
bookies won overall!
Feedback from delegates includes:
Mark Harrison, PowerPerfector
A very useful and informative day, with a good
dose of fun.
Peter Clayton, IACSC European Director
An excellent networking opportunity with
opportunities to share experiences and seek
advice as appropriate on all aspects of the
market sector in which we operate.
Andy Martin, Delifrance UK Ltd
An informative session giving good insight into
what the BFFF can offer.
Mike Godwin, Ercolano
I have been a member of the BFFF since
1998 and I could not imagine working within
this industry without being a part of this
organisation. It has been invaluable to me in
terms of technical and personal support along
with the invaluable networking opportunities
it provides.
DATE FOR THE DIARY

VINCE MCDONAGH reviews the latest
food industry happenings in the Humber area
MORRISONS NEW SEAFOOD
PLANT SWINGS INTO PRODUCTION
THE first chilled fish from Morrisons new
Grimsby seafood factory is already on sale in the
company's 470 plus stores throughout Britain.
Less than six months after Morrisons took over
the former Kwoks frozen Chinese meals plant,
the site is now moving towards full production.
Currently around 90 people are employed there
but that figure will rise to more than 200 as
output is stepped up.
This is the first time that a major British retailer
has bought and processed its own seafood, but
the principle is not new to Morrisons which
already operates meat and vegetable production
centres elsewhere in the country and the addition
of the fish site is part of a longer term plan by
the company to make more of the food it sells at
its own premises.
The Grimsby-based new business will fillet and
portion a variety of seafood, and will process:
salmon, cod, haddock, smoked cod, smoked
haddock, prawns, mussels and surimi.
The company buys a lot of its fish direct from the
quayside and from the Grimsby market. Some
is also supplied by independent Grimsby fish
merchants. Morrisons says the operation will
allow it to move fish into its stores much quicker,
therefore making it fresher.
The Grimsby office of Intelect Engineering Ltd
was awarded the key project management and
principal contractor role by Morrisons' seafood
division. Intelect has also assisted the equipment
suppliers during the installation period as well
as taking care of all service requirements to the
machinery itself, including the supply of water,
compressed air and electrics.
Grimsby transport company Quayside, which
already delivers most of Grimsby's fish around
the country, has won the contract to handle the
distribution, in a move that has also created some
extra jobs. Quayside is now one of the largest
chilled seafood distributors in the country.
The project has also won Government approval.
When Greg Clarke visited Grimsby a few months
ago as Minister for Cities, he said: “Grimsby has
been through tough times, but this news from
Morrisons is a real vote of confidence in the
economic future of the area. This investment
reinforces Grimsby's position as the heart of a
vital cluster for the food processing industry, and
will create valuable growth and jobs. I saw this
week the positive difference this investment will
make.”

FISH CAKES BECOME THE NEW LUXURY
GOURMET DISH
THERE was a time, not so many years ago, when
fish cakes were considered a poor person's food.
But thanks to retailers such as Marks & Spencer
it has moved into the gourmet category.
Now one Grimsby chilled food company which
makes its own special gourmet fish cakes along
with other luxury seafood products is celebrating
new sales success and with recipes that come
straight from the family archive.
Chapman's, which has already won over
thousands of delicatessens and farm food shops
in the UK with the quality of its products, has now
won a major contract to supply the Lincolnshire
Co-op's 75 stores.
Run by Kevin and Paul Chapman, Chapman's
Gourmet Fish Cakes employs around 10 people
at their Grimsby production centre. There are six
varieties in the range including smoked haddock
and bacon, haddock and parsley with cheddar
cheese, classic fish and parsley and two salmon
based products.
They also produce other high quality seafood
products such as luxury fish pies. They are
particularly proud that the original recipe came
from their late mother, Mavis Chapman.
Kevin said: "We are delighted - the Co-op is a
retailer with an excellent reputation and this will
give our fish cakes a much wider exposure to
the public." In fact the Co-op, which is a strong
supporter of local and regional suppliers sent a
special film team to Grimsby Fish Docks to record
how its new products are sourced and made.
It will eventually be posted on its customer
website. Once considered "food for the poor"
fish cakes have soared in popularity in recent
years and more innovative work is going into
making them more appealing to the public.
The Chapman Family have been involved in the
fishing industry in Grimsby for over fifty years.
Over this time they have amassed invaluable
knowledge especially with regards to recognising
and sourcing the best fish available.
Like many Grimsby housewives the late Mavis
Chapman had her own recipe for fishcakes using
the haddock that her husband Terry, a former
Grimsby fish merchant, would fetch from work.
Kevin said one reason for the company's success
is because he has the pick of supplies from the
Grimsby fish market and potatoes from the fields
of Lincolnshire.
YOUNG'S NEW MARINE BIOLOGIST WILL
AID FISH SUSTAINABILITY DRIVE
GRIMSBY-based Young’s Seafood Limited has
appointed a marine biologist in a senior role to
further deepen the company’s expertise in fish.
David Parker, formerly a Fisheries Officer at
the Marine Conservation Society and a Marine
Policy Officer at the World Wide Fund for Nature,
has joined Young’s Seafood Limited as part of
the Corporate Social Responsibility team led by
Mike Mitchell.
With a degree in Marine Biology and an MSc in
Environmental Biology, David has also worked
on board a fishing boat and carried out research
for a fishery management body.
David’s work at Young’s Seafood Limited will
involve researching sustainable emerging
sources of fish and seafood for new products,
working with fishermen and fish farmers on their
improvement initiatives and providing support
and advice to customers who want to further
grow the sustainable fish category. He will also
play a crucial role in implementing Young’s award
winning Fish for Life programme on responsible
fish procurement.
David said: “This as a great opportunity to make
a difference and take supplying sustainable fish
to the next level. I can’t wait to get out on the
water and work with fishermen, fish farmers
and customers on new sources of fish, new
products and new sustainability projects. I’m
excited about working to save the environment
and joining a team that are so committed and
passionate about doing the right thing.”
Mike Mitchell, Technical and CSR Director at
Young’s Seafood Limited, said: “I’m delighted
to welcome David to Young’s, having had
the pleasure of working alongside him on
sustainability initiatives for a number of years.
“He brings a wealth of expertise, energy and
insight and together we’ll work on some exciting
projects as part of our Fish for Life programme.”
Leendert den Hollander, Chief Executive of
Young’s Seafood Limited, said: “Protecting our
seas and inspiring people to eat responsibly
sourced fish are core to what we do across our
branded and own-label offering. We believe that
success is about doing the right thing now, and
for generations to come, and appointing a marine
biologist further demonstrates our commitment
to this agenda. “There is a huge opportunity to
inspire more people to try different species and
responsibly sourced fish and we are pleased to
welcome David to our team of fish experts.”

Steakhouse is still great value after 30 Years
It was the year Culture Club topped the charts, Channel 4 first went on air, Mark Thatcher disappeared in the Sahara desert. The Young Ones shocked TV
audiences, England and Scotland were both in the World Cup and ET phoned home. 1982. Slightly less heralded, it was also the year that Steakhouse
grills and burgers first hit Britain’s freezer cabinets and dining tables.
Thirty years on, Manchester fast foods producer Glendale still lists Steakhouse uncooked beef grills and burgers in its product range and they have
become staple purchases for independent grocers and their customers. So much so that some retailers still insist on buying them in the original pack
design, since customers immediately recognise these frozen products as simple, wholesome and convenient fare.
Introduced in 1982, Steakhouse grillsteaks and burgers were intended for households on a budget, providing the centrepiece for an inexpensive family
meal or for feeding hungry kids and homecoming workers. McDonald’s had only opened in Britain eight years earlier, so fast food was just becoming
fashionable and the Western-influenced Steakhouse name proved popular and has remained consistently so over three decades.
Much later, the products were repackaged and rebranded as part of Glendale’s best-selling Yankee range, highlighting the Steakhouse name just as
similar lines were being withdrawn from the independent retail sector. Long a champion of the local convenience store, Glendale’s price-marked the packs
to give independent stockists a competitive impulse line that appeals to customers making top-up purchases. At £1.79 for 4 Steakhouse Beefburgers
or 6 Steakhouse Grillsteaks, they still represent excellent value for money and can be grilled or shallow fried from frozen in 10-12 minutes, for a hearty
snack.
“These are good uncomplicated products made from wholesome ingredients, which have been consistent family favourites,” says Glendale Chairman,
John Mortimer, who first introduced the line.
Since independent stockists often have relatively limited freezer space, the Yankee Steakhouse products are presented as 6 packs to the trade outer,
minimising the retailer’s stockholding commitment, whilst enabling the inclusion of two strong impulse lines.
The continuing credit crunch has seen a marked renaissance for frozen foods, particularly meat and savoury products. So Glendale’s long-standing
Steakhouse favourites, first introduced during the early 80’s recession,
offer guaranteed consumer appeal and great value, at a time when hardpressed customers are again seeking to save money.
“Recent reports suggest that families are focused on obtaining value for
money during this double-dip recession, so they’re switching to frozen
products to cut costs and minimise wastage,” concludes John Mortimer.
“It seems that after thirty years as budget favourites, our Steakhouse
products are still meeting the needs of busy British households, because
they are convenient, economical, nutritious and tasty.”
Yankee Steakhouse products are now available from frozen food
distributors, cash & carry outlets or direct from Glendale Foods

Pidy’s feeling Fruity for the Autumn
The secret is out – Pidy has finally launched
the second strand of its groundbreaking new

Fabulous Fruity Cups are one of three interlinked

saucer to accompany a cup of coffee.
‘Fruity Cups are the second part of a three part launch which Pidy has planned for introduction over
a one year period,’ says Robert Whittle ‘Part One - Veggie Cups - was unveiled at the Birmingham
Food & Drink Expo in March this year. Fruity Cups will have their first official airing at the lunch!
show in London in September and it’s a case of ‘watch this space for project number three’.
There are four varieties in the range –
Strawberry, Banana, Fruits of the Forest (mix
of blueberry, raspberry and blackberry) and
Orange. Each brings 100% natural fruit taste
and colour to the table – all are made using
30% fruit juice and contain no artificial colours
or E numbers. All varieties can be frozen and
will stay crispy after defrosting. ‘They can
remain crisp up to 18 hours when stored in
a cool place,’ advises GM of Pidy UK, Robert
Whittle.
Each flavour is packaged in a cash & carry-style
box with 96 portions per case. The mixed case
also has 96 portions (24 of each flavour).
‘It’s good to see our plans bearing fruit.’

Aunt Bessie’s launches
new category with frozen
Homestyle Gravy NPD
Family run frozen food company, Aunt Bessie’s
Limited, is to launch a frozen gravy product,
creating a new category within the frozen
food sector.
Launching in late September, the frozen
Homestyle Gravy range will feature two
flavours; Classic and Perfect for Chicken.
The products, which have been developed in
response to consumer insight which highlights
that whilst gravy is crucial to the roast meal
occasion, consumers find making gravy a
difficult task, particularly at the critical ‘end
of the meal’ preparation stage.
Each 25g cube makes 125ml gravy, which
equates to two servings. The product can be
made on the hob, in the microwave, or added
straight to roasting tray meat juices.
The production capacity will increase to 8000 tonnes per annum and will see the development of an
added value facility adjacent to the main production plant.
To strengthen their presence within the European market, Star Agro Marine Exports established Star
Agro Marine Foods Ltd in 2012. The UK based company will be responsible for the continued growth
of the business within Europe and will support their customers from a commercial, technical and
service point of view.
They would welcome the opportunity to discuss your on-going requirements or any development
projects you may be involved in and explore the products and services that they offer.

Gilbert’s Foods’ Lamb Henry
is Flavour of the Month
Gilbert’s Foods, a leading supplier of quality meat and poultry dishes to
the foodservice sector, has reported a 25% increase in demand for its
Lamb Henry joint in Rosemary and Mint sauce.
A traditional Lamb Henry dish uses economical cuts such as shanks
and shoulder and with cost-effective cuts of meats seeing a surge in
popularity within the foodservice sector, Gilbert’s Foods aims to build
on this growth during the winter months.
The traditional, slow-cooked, individual lamb joints are made using the
finest New Zealand lamb, to a unique recipe designed by the team of
development chefs at Gilbert’s Foods.
Quick and easy for busy chefs to prepare, the individual portions of
lamb can be cooked using the sous-vide method for 20-25 minutes or in
the microwave on full power for six minutes. The portions are ready to
be heated from frozen or from room temperature. Once cooked, chefs
simply cut across the top of the bag then pour the meat and its sauce
onto a serving plate.
Available in 1.8kg cases, with six individual 300g portions per case, the
versatile fully-cooked Lamb Henrys are available in frozen or ambient
format so are ideal for chefs to store. Plus, the quality, taste and texture
of each product is guaranteed for up to 12 months when kept in a
freezer or cold store.
Chefs can experiment with presentation techniques and accompaniments
or serve with roasted or mashed potatoes and garden vegetables, as
the sauce gives the dish a flavoursome gravy.

BLUE CUBE SATISFY THE SANDWICH

It’s a staple product we often take for granted but how often do
we stop and think about where our sandwich comes from and how
carefully it’s been put together?
The answer is likely to be provided by The Sandwich Factory, based
in Atherstone, Warwickshire, part of the Cranswick Food Group,
itself a division of Cranswick plc, one of the UK’s most successful
chilled food businesses.
As a leading supplier of premium quality sandwiches to the retail,
travel and leisure sectors in both the UK and Europe, The Sandwich
Factory employs over 500 expert sandwich makers at its Atherstone
production facilities. As a company, it distinguishes itself by its
flexibility, its keenness to understand its customers’ needs and its
ability to develop unique propositions to meet those needs.
When The Sandwich Factory won a new contract to supply product
into a national convenience store network, it was clear that
additional chilled area capacity was needed and that the current
ambient storage and packing area would have to be converted – and
quickly!
12

The Sandwich Factory had already experienced Blue Cube’s ability
to supply Cold Store and Blast Chiller products in both free-standing
and purpose-built applications, so it was natural to turn to Blue Cube
again and set them the problem to resolve within a tight time-frame
and within an existing building.
Simon Tonks, The Sandwich Factory’s Logistics Manager said: “After
going out to a number of potential suppliers, it was clear that only
Blue Cube could offer the right solution in the required timescale
and, from our previous experience with Blue Cube’s work, we were
confident in their ability to deliver.”
The project to create the purpose-built solution was headed by
Mark Giles, Blue Cube’s Project Manager who worked with both The
Sandwich Factory’s Operations Director Paul Nicholson and Simon
Tonks.
In order to meet the brief, Blue Cube’s solution involved the
extending of the existing on-site Chiller to give an additional 119
square metres of chilled picking and storage, as well as the supply
of an extra 12-pallet Blast Chiller, within the existing warehouse

The additional challenge for Blue Cube was to ensure that the build
process allowed The Sandwich Factory to continue normal working
without interruption and this was also achieved through good
collaboration and detailed work planning.
The Sandwich Factory’s demands for a speedy solution were
met, with the project being completed and ready for hand-over a
week early, after a four week build period, as well as gaining their
additional capacity requirements with minimal interruption to the
production process.
In the words of Simon Tonks, ”The Sandwich Factory are very
satisfied with the Blue Cube solution and the way it was carried out.
We know from previous experience that their aftercare is second-to

Ice cream firm helps British Airways customers
to enjoy their lolly-days
A cone or tub of Rossi’s premium artisan ice cream
made from fresh milk, butter and double cream is a great
Southend tradition - but the iconic firm recently spread
its wings as far as Gatwick airport.
British Airways selected the award-winning manufacturer to
supply ice cream for 50,000 passengers to enjoy at Gatwick’s
North Terminal for a fortnight during August, helping them to
start their holidays with a delicious treat.
Managing Director of Rossi Ice Cream, Colin Gray said that the
UK’s flag carrier airline wanted a patriotic theme which also
reflected the famous design of the planes’ tail fins: “They served
our special Celebration ice cream in red, white and blue, (vanilla
with strawberry and blueberry ripples) plus other flavours to
replicate British Airways’ corporate colours.”
This was an important opportunity for Colin’s firm, as it
represented an exciting and unusual sampling opportunity
during what was expected to be the airports busiest ever
summer. Bosses at Gatwick predicted that Friday 17 August
would see the most passenger movements, with some 138,000
people expected to travel through the airport.
To get them in the holiday mood, customers were offered Rossi
ice creams as the perfect summer send-off.
is why we thought what better way to enhance that holiday spirit this summer than by
giving our passengers ice cream.”
Colm Lacy, British Airways’ head of commercial at Gatwick, said:
“It was all good fun. We simply wanted to get people excited for
their holidays and thought this was an ideal way of celebrating
with them.”
Colin is understandably proud to be asked by one of Britain’s leading brands to supply
his product to them and says that some of the country’s biggest names have followed
BA’s lead: “Rossi ice cream has been enjoyed by bands, artists and VIPs appearing at
several big music festivals as part of their backstage refreshments. Also a number of
celebrities and Harrods’ key customers have recently enjoyed our ice cream at their
parties and events.”
Paul Fitch, Gatwick Airport’s head of terminal operations said:
“At Gatwick we aim to treat every passenger as our guest,
helping to make their journey a positively memorable one, which

New Dutch fresh ready-made pancake
brand launches
A new ready-made quality pancake brand, Abra-ca-Debora, has been launched
in the UK. The fresh pancakes are produced in the Netherlands by De Bioderij,
the country's number one producer of ready-made pancakes, to a traditional
recipe made with natural ingredients. Abra-ca-Debora pancakes are aimed
at busy households looking to make stress-free, quick, nutritious meals. The
pancakes are available in sweet and original savoury varieties (rsp: from
around £1.50 for six) and, as they are made with fresh ingredients such as
milk and eggs, will be located in the chiller to preserve their authentic taste
and consistency. The marketing campaign includes consumer PR and social
media activity as well as on-pack recipes, competitions and trial opportunities
focused on offering solutions to the problem of 'Repetitive Meal Syndrome'.
The brand initially launches in Sainsbury's and Tesco stores nationally and will
roll out from mid-September.
Jan Boers of Abra-ca-Debora and responsible for the UK business, said that
they were very excited to be launching a great-tasting, well-priced pancake
brand to further stimulate growth of the chilled foods category. "Pancakes are
a part of our way of life in the Netherlands and ready-to-eat pancakes are a
very frequent purchase for many households. We wanted to bring Abra-caDebora pancakes to the UK and offer consumers a new way to prepare meals
for kids and busy households in a typically relaxed Dutch way."
Jan continues, "Abra-ca-Debora, as the name suggests, helps busy mothers
magically conjure up meals in minutes. Debora is a lovely larger than life character based on mothers, grandmothers and aunts that many of us Dutch
people know and remember well. Based on our feedback from busy mums, we are sure Debora and her pancakes will be loved by British families as well.
She helps people see just how tasty, convenient and wholesome pancakes are. They aren't just for Pancake Day - they are for every day and whilst they
are delicious with lemon and sugar, there is a multitude of pancake recipes, both sweet and savoury, that the whole family will enjoy." Research shows
that 6.5m households eat pancakes in their different forms at least once a year and Abra-ca-Debora aims to grow the category, making her pancakes a
regular part of Britain's weekly menu. There are plans to introduce new products in the near future to complement the range.
Lovetub predicts eruption in sales of

Sticky Toffee Pudding and Chocolate Pudding variants. The desserts can be
microwaved in just 30 seconds and eaten straight from the tub.
with additional store listings this Autumn/Winter.
Lovetub Chocolate Orange Volcano Pudding will be available in outers of
8, with an RRP of £1.29.
“Chocolate and orange is a mouth-watering flavour combination that’s
always popular with dessert-lovers,” says Group Marketing Director Nigel
Parrott. “The new variant is bound to catch shoppers’ attention, providing
a tasty new option for lovetub loyalists whilst attracting new consumers
to the brand.
“By meeting a specific consumer need, lovetub is driving sales in the chilled
desserts category. As consumers continue to dine out less frequently, they
are seeking indulgent treats to enjoy at home. The single-serve lovetub
is the perfect ‘just for me’ luxury and is particularly popular with younger
consumers seeking convenient treats that are quick to prepare and instantly
satisfying.”
The lovetub brand aims to build on its impressive YOY unit growth of 50%

Chris Sturman, Chief Executive of the FSDF
The recent FSDF 2012 Conference, in
collaboration with British Frozen Food
Federation, focused on Food Supply Chain
Excellence and sought to identify and discuss
challenges and opportunities facing businesses
through the food chain from source to consumer,
in the context of the current economic
situation.
A team of top class food industry speakers
covered the whole food supply chain from
procurement and manufacturing through to
retail, wholesale and foodservice. They provided
some visions on what we as supply chain and
logistics specialists should focus, and helped
delegates to understand what they need to take
account of if our members are going to have
sustainable and responsible businesses in the
medium to long term future.
Three key areas of focus stand out as being
of particular relevance, as more and more
FSDF members work towards achievement of
certification to the BRC Quality Standard for
Storage and Distribution, now perceived by both
retail and manufacturing as the qualification
level and benchmark for food logistics
operations in both the own account and third
party service supply sectors:
Education and Training
FSDF Food Logistics Pathway Qualifications are quickly
establishing the benchmark against which operational
managers and operatives working in the food and
drink logistics supply chain can be measured. They
also provide employers with a vocational training and
skills programme that align to their own operations
and give the reassurance that their employees have
the skills, knowledge and competence to underpin
the business’s strategic plans and objectives in the
future.
The structure of the Pathway Programme and
the courses that are available are now providing
demonstrable benefits of the programme to those
FSDF companies that are investing the time to train.
FSDF has developed strategic relationship with
training providers to obtain funding, currently available
through Skills Funding Agency schemes. Programme
benefits include:

DSEAR/ATEX – Ammonia Refrigeration Plant
Safety Regulations
The third important issue affects all owners and
operators of cold and chilled stores. We at FSDF have
been concerned about this issue for some considerable
time and we return to it again. We have been working
over the last twelve months with technical specialists
in the refrigeration industry on the subject of ammonia
refrigeration plant installations and compliance with
DSEAR/ATEX.
We cannot stress enough the fact that it has been
mandatory that all new ammonia plant installations
must comply with the Dangerous Substances and
Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) from July
2003. It is certain that all new ammonia refrigeration
plant installations will in addition need to comply
with the Construction Design and Management
Regulations (CDM).
One of the main impacts of CDM has been to
oblige designers to consider the health and safety
implications of their designs, during construction,
maintenance and ultimate demolition. In addition, the
principal role of the Planning Supervisor is to ensure
that everyone else is carrying out their duties under
the regulations, and advise accordingly.
Since compliance with DSEAR is also mandatory
after July 2006; irrespective of the age of the plant,
owners should have retrospectively surveyed their
existing plants before July 2006 and implemented
the conclusion of hazardous area classifications and
any necessary design alterations to ensure their
compliance with DSEAR. This risk assessment needs
to be undertaken by a “qualified person”.
Unfortunately it is evident that most hazardous area
classifications and ammonia risk assessments are
generally very poor and most do not even come close
to satisfying the requirements of IEC 60079-10-1 which
is the international standard for the classification of
areas containing explosive gases such as ammonia.
Whilst refrigeration plants using ammonia as the
refrigerant, designed, built and maintained according
to the standards set out in EN378 have in the UK
generally a good safety record, owners, operators and
employers should also know that EN378 alone does
not satisfy the requirements of DSEAR. Therefore, it
might harm your defence if, in the event of ammonia
escaping from your refrigeration plant, you try to rely
solely on the European Standard EN378.
The FSDF believes it is vitally important for owners
of ammonia refrigeration plant to ensure they are
completely up to date with the important initiatives
the FSDF Technical and Safety Committee has been
working on regarding compliance with DSEAR. The
conference presentation helps in this process, but
more information is available for those who need to
know more, by contacting the FSDF at Reading.

in their carbon consumption; helping to meet their CO2 reduction targets, as well as improving
efficiency throughout the process.
The warehouse operates at temperatures down to -28°C, is fully automated and designed to the
highest environmental standards. Plus, a manual picking service will also enable the delivery
of mixed pallets into the global marketplace, whilst cutting costs on unnecessary additional
transportation.
Speaking of TRI’s relationship with Partner Logistics, Clive Scrivens, Logistics Manager, said:
“We were looking to consolidate our range of products together to create a leaner, more efficient
supply chain and in turn reduce our carbon consumption and our overall costs – Partner Logistics
were able to deliver outstanding solutions which add significant value to our overall operations.”
He adds: “Partner Logistics is unique in the frozen warehousing industry as its fully automated
warehouses are built to specific client requirements and are delivered through sustainable, longterm contracts. As well as operating warehouses, Partner Logistics works with transport partners
to provide a complete logistics end to end solution, providing us with absolute peace of mind.”
Since opening in 2009, Partner Logistics Gloucester has been hugely successful, attracting big name producers to the facility, including Unilever.
Tudor Rose International (TRI) is Europe’s leading Export Market Management Company supplying British Brands around the world; with 190
customers across the globe. Their key customers include: Dairy Crest, Unilever, Premier Foods, Kraft, GSK, Burtons Biscuits, Fox’s Confectionery and
Typhoo.
Sustainability and efficiency
www.partnerlogistics.eu
Located in the heart of the Fens, the firm’s Wisbech facility
is the UK’s largest deep freeze warehouse with a capacity
of 77,000 pallets, with more than 650,000 tons of food
passing through every year. While the Gloucester site can
store up to 72,000 pallets. Both state-of-the-art warehouses
operate at temperatures down to -28°C, are fully automated
and designed to the highest environmental specifications.
Partner Logistics has consistently invested in the latest
technology, including software that spots blockages etc.
on the production line, automated technologies, including
robotic cranes and conveyor belts used to move the
products around. In fact, the warehouses are approximately
four times larger than the average frozen storage facility,
but far more efficient in terms of economies of scale and yet
they only require a third of the number of staff to operate
effectively.
Carbon savings are also generated from the location of the
sites, which have had a hugely positive impact in helping
customers reduce their food road miles, and their CO2
emissions.

Chiltern invests in new warehouse and vehicle fleet
Originally founded in 1993, The Chiltern Cold Storage Group is a
privately held company that has transformed itself over the years
into one of the region's leading temperature-controlled logistics
providers.
When Chiltern moved to its Peterborough site in 2002, it was
immediately identified as a location for future expansion. They
initially decided to lease an existing warehouse for ambient storage
within close proximity, instead of undergoing the disruption and cost
of construction. However, as a rapidly expanding business, a larger, on
site, ambient warehouse, is instrumental in supporting their growth.
The new warehouse,
which will be operational
by November 2012, will
have the capacity for 3,500 pallets. This major expansion to the existing 13,000 frozen and
1,500 chilled pallet spaces, already on the site, will create a multi temperature facility to
cater to the growing needs of their customers.
As well as expanding their storage capability, Chiltern have also recently added 2 new
Mercedes Actros tractor units to their constantly increasing fleet. The 6 x 2 450 BHP
units were supplied by Orwell Trucks of Norwich. Speaking of the new vehicles Chiltern’s
managing director, Paul Jackson said: “The new Actros is the latest generation of truck.
Fuel consumption is key to our operation and this new model returns more miles per gallon
than its predecessor."

One-stop-savings
from Hörmann
A
s demands increase for supply chains to reduce their carbon
footprint and with energy costs still rising, reducing energy
consumption is a key factor when looking at the running costs
of frozen and chilled warehouses. Doors are critical in this
regard and while the cost and effectiveness of a door are
readily considered whole life costs to operate the door are sometimes
forgotten. It is not just the door itself but ancillary equipment such as
dehumidifiers and lighting that can make a difference.
For frozen operations the Hörmann Iso Speed Cold sectional door offers a
number of benefits but only needing to operate a dehumidifier when the
door is open is an additional energy saving feature. For chilled operations
glazed panels can be included in sectional doors that offer the benefits of
improved safety through visibility and natural lighting that can minimise
demand for powered lighting.
Fast, airtight and efficient the Iso Speed Cold door has heating traces
between the panels and in the side guides. Thermal breaks separate the
interior and exterior and the additional lintel and bottom seals making
it the ideal option where there are big temperature differences. As with
all sectional doors, in the event of collision damage, repair is relatively
straightforward, downtime is minimised and costs are modest.
When it comes to considering overall cost effectiveness the thermal
insulation value of the door is often taken as an indicator of its
performance, however the thermal value of individual panels is often
quoted, not the value of the completed door. The real consideration
should be getting the best possible insulation in a package that minimises
other costs too.
As an example, the Hörmann Iso Speed Cold door panels have a thermal
U-value of only 0.3 W/m2K. However a common size, 2m x 2m door when
complete will have an overall value of around 0.8 W/m2K. This changes
as the size of the door alters since the U-value is a measure of heat
transfer. A precision fit and excellent seals are probably more important
than the door panel itself in this regard.
froz en & c h ille d f o o d s
While individual components can have a finite measure,
overall efficiency demands attention to detail. For
example the Hörmann ThermoFrame was born out of a
desire to improve insulation around, already excellent,
sectional doors. An massive improvement of 20% for
the class leading Hörmann SPU door is taken to an even
higher level of 40% when combined with additional lintel
and bottom seals with the double insulated DPU door.
Again it is attention to detail around the efficient door
panels that adds the real value, or in this case savings.
By considering, not just the door but its environment,
working practices and peripheral equipment as a single
package, the best options can be chosen to maximise
both energy efficiency and operational safety.
When it comes to safety, collisions between fork lift
trucks and fast action doors are a risk that needs to be
minimised. With sectional doors Hörmann's non contact,
Light Grille safety device can be integrated into the
door frame and monitors the open door up to a height
of 2.5m. If any of the light beams are broken, the door
will stop. The integration means that collision damage is
highly unlikely and with no moving parts, maintenance
demands are significantly reduced.
Considering the whole package, rather than individual
components, is the way to maximise savings and
ensuring real value for money. As a true one-stop-shop
for loading bay and industrial door needs Hörmann has
the knowledge, products and expertise to create the best
solutions to meet your needs.

WORLD’S LEADING SEAFOOD COMPANY THE FIRST TO
CHANGE FROM PP TO APET WITH FAERCH PLAST’S NEW
EASY-TO-SEAL MAPET II PACKAGING
Switch results in improved transparency, faster sealing times & environmental benefits
Marine Harvest, said to be the world’s leading
seafood company and largest producer of farmed
salmon, is the first organisation to use MAPET®
II, the revolutionary new packaging material
from specialist manufacturer of quality plastics
trays and containers for the food industry, Faerch
Plast Ltd (tel: 020 8254 2300, www.faerchplast.
co.uk).
Featuring similar properties as APET/PE,
MAPET® II is produced from just one material,
MONO amorphous polyethylene terephthalate or
MAPET®, which seals easily and more securely
than its predecessor, MAPET I and offers
improved transparency for greater visibility of
the product.
Faerch Plast is supplying Marine Harvest
(Benelux) with MAPET II trays for packing fresh
fish products for one of its customers, retailer
Albert Heijn.
Phillippe De Bie of Marine Harvest, explained:
“Our customer wanted to redesign their
packaging to create a uniform look and feel
across its entire poultry, red meat and fish
product ranges. A major requirement of the redesign was that the trays had to be completely
transparent in order to convey the freshness of
the products.”
He continued: “It was obvious from the
beginning that APET, which is not always easy
to seal but has excellent clarity, had to be used.
So, our best option by far was the new MAPET
II, with its excellent sealability and improved
transparency. Plus the new trays are more rigid
than PP, do not deform, transport well and comply
to HACCP rules.”
22
Because MAPET II is a recyclable mono material
produced from recycled packaging, it presents
increased benefits to the environment as well
as cost-savings against a more expensive, nonrecyclable laminate.
De Bie comments: “Planet is one of the four pillars
of the Marine Harvest mission statement, so the
environmental benefits were key to our decision.
Plus, the authorities in the Netherlands have
recently implemented a new campaign whereby
all plastic packaging which can be recycled gets
a ‘Plastic Heroes’ logo, so it was important for
our customer to comply with these regulations.”
An additional bonus was the ability to change
over to APET without the need for a major
investment in new tools and machinery. Marine
Harvest has been able to utilise its existing
machines for de-nesting and sealing the MAPET
II trays, with just a few minor alterations needed
to the parameters of the sealing machines.
Following a thorough research project into the
packaging options available on the market,
plus a visit to Faerch Plast’s production plant
in Holstebro, Denmark, Marine Harvest is
now offering MAPET II packaging to its entire
customer base.
As far as retailer Albert Heijn is concerned, its
natural fish fillets, marinated fish, coated fish,
burgers and fish with sauces are all being packed
in MAPET II trays of differing sizes, colours and
designs under modified atmospheric conditions
at Marine Harvest’s facility in Holland.
De Bie concludes: “We were not surprised that
Faerch Plast was the first to develop this new,
innovative packaging material, since they are
continually looking to improve their products
and to develop new techniques. However, we
were pleasantly surprised that their service and
expertise was also excellent. We received great
support throughout, in particular from technical
and sales staff during the start-up phase. They
even came over from Denmark to assist us in the
switch over, which was very important since we
changed our complete packaging process in one
day.
“I would recommend MAPET II and Faerch Plast
to all businesses which are looking to work with
APET.”
Since it was established in 1969, Faerch Plast
has built an unrivalled reputation for high quality
plastics packaging products, supplying major
blue chip customers in the ready meal, fresh
meat, cold foods and snacks, and ambient food
sectors with a wide range of containers and
trays produced from PS, CPET, APET, PP, PLA,
MAPET® and AMPET®.
Danish parent company Færch Plast A/S has
opened a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility
in the North East of England. A large part of its
production for the UK market will be moved to the
new Durham-based plant as part of an on-going
strategy to secure costs, improve efficiencies
and minimise its environmental impact.
Production has already started at the 14,000
square metre site. This key move will help
improve operating efficiencies, shorten lead
times and further strengthen the overall service
provided to Faerch Plast’s rapidly expanding UK
customer base.

Kliklok sleeves GU desserts
Kliklok has completed the successful installation of their Certiwrap C150 sleeving machine at
Noble Foods, packing a range of delicious GÜ dessert mini-pots.
In 2010, Noble Foods acquired the premium dessert company GÜ
Puds, and now produces a complete range of miniature chocolate
pots, cheesecakes, and fruit puds. Kliklok worked closely with
Noble Foods to design the C150 wraparound cartoning machine
to exactly suit their production requirements, to sleeve three
different sizes of dessert pots, in single packs and triple packs.
The project included integration with a Geysell feeder to apply a
small wrapped spoon to the lid of the ‘singles’ pack prior to the
carton being wrapped around and glued at the base. The project
also included the integration of a Wolke inkjet coder.
The C150 was designed for Noble Foods with a scroll infeed
system, ideal for the smooth transfer of the round pots through
to the machine sleeving process at up to 150 cartons per minute.
With the benefits of icon-based HMI touch screen controls,
patented rotary carton feeder, powered carton hopper, and
quick size change facility – the C150 provides the reliability
and flexibility that Noble Foods needs for their growing range
of products, as well as the reassurance of continual production
efficiency, with minimal downtime, reduced maintenance and
low running costs.

Star delivers another cool solution for logistics firm
Global logistics specialist Kuehne + Nagel has invested in another environmentally efficient chill store
cooling system from Star Refrigeration.
Kuehne + Nagel required a new refrigeration plant as part of an extension to a chilled storage facility at its Brinklow site, near Milton Keynes. The
distribution centre handles food and drink logistics for one of the UK’s leading supermarket chains.
Following the success of previous cooling projects at other UK sites, Kuehne + Nagel approached Star to design and build an environmentally conscious,
robust and reliable refrigeration plant for the new chill store. Star worked in partnership with the main building contractor for the expansion project to
deliver a turnkey cooling solution for Kuehne + Nagel.
A world leader in cooling and heating system innovation, Star designed and built a high efficiency refrigeration plant incorporating two of its Azanechillers.
The compact ammonia packaged chillers supply cooling to the new multi temperature chill store, with a 56,000sqft chamber for chilled goods and a
45,000sqft produce chamber for fresh fruit and vegetables. Each temperature controlled chamber has a throughput of around 30 tonnes per hour.
Star combined the new Azanechiller system with an existing refrigeration plant to give Kuehne + Nagel the flexibility to operate the two chambers
within the new chill store at different temperatures. The existing plant allows the fresh produce chamber to operate at +9 degrees Celsius, with the new
Azanechiller system enabling an operating temperature of +2 degrees Celsius in the chilled goods chamber.
Working to a strict time schedule, Star pre-commissioned and performance tested the Azanechiller system at its Glasgow manufacturing facility to reduce
installation time on site at Brinklow. Group company Star M&E Solutions was awarded the role of mechanical and electrical contractor, including main
low voltage panel works, lighting for the two chambers, fire alarm and alterations to the ventilation system.
The Kuehne + Nagel system features two air-cooled Azanechillers with ammonia as primary and glycol as secondary refrigerant. Each unit has a cooling
capacity of 400kW and features a low ammonia charge of less than 0.45kg/kW. The Azanechillers are located externally, mounted on concrete plinths
adjacent to the existing plant room.
As an environmentally conscious natural refrigerant with zero global warming and ozone depletion potential, ammonia overcomes concerns over HFCs.
Waste heat from the Azanechillers is recovered for defrosting the evaporators in the new and existing refrigeration plant.
Azanechiller is a complete refrigeration package, ideally suited to temperature controlled storage as well as food processing, building services and
process cooling. Only an electrical supply and flow/return pipework is required to provide cooling. This reduces site installation and commissioning time,
whilst also avoiding the need for a plant room.
Suitable for cooling both water and glycol, Azanechiller was developed by Star for environmentally conscious end users. Azanechiller typically offers a
30% increase in performance compared with standard HFC chillers. Its packaged design and careful component selection result in an ultra low refrigerant
charge, with all ammonia contained within the chiller and sited outside the warehouse or production facility.
Azanechiller features high quality, industrial components to offer unrivalled performance, reliability and low maintenance. Each unit includes two screw
compressors, low noise drive motors, Star’s low charge low pressure receiver and semi-welded PHE evaporator. Star’s Telstar computerised control
system ensures optimum performance, with HMI
touch screen interface and optional broadband
connection for offsite remote monitoring.
Azanechiller is available as an air-cooled or watercooled unit with cooling capacity from 200kW to
850kW. Air-cooled Azanechillers feature high
efficiency EC condenser fan technology. Watercooled Azanechillers include a welded plate heat
exchanger condenser to minimise refrigerant
charge. Both include floating header pressure
control, which optimises efficiency at part load
conditions and low ambient temperatures.
When it comes to designing energy efficient
cooling and heating systems, Star is a natural
innovator. Star works with strategic partners
across the globe to deliver low carbon, cost
saving solutions.
