Mediterranean
Couscous
Salad
Isn’t this salad bright and
beautiful? Cherry tomatoes,
bell peppers, cucumbers,
and eggplant combine with
couscous, olives, feta, and basil for a zesty and refreshing
Mediterranean salad. It’s a great way to get the whole family
to eat their veggies – even the eggplant! Not familiar with
cooking eggplant? No worries, we’ve got you covered.
Eggplant is an excellent source of fiber and antioxidants, and
has been shown to lower cholesterol, plus it tastes delicious,
so it’s a great ingredient to use in different dishes. If you have
time, the best way to prepare an eggplant is to salt it. Do this
simply by cubing the eggplant (leaving the skin on), sprinkling
with salt, and leaving it to sit in a colander for 1-2 hours.

This process draws out the juices and firms the flesh, so the
eggplant will be less likely to soak up all the oil. Remember
to rinse off the salt and pat the eggplant dry before cooking!
Salting the eggplant isn’t necessary, it’s just how we do it in
our house. This salad is filled with feta, tomatoes, and olives,
which makes for a wonderfully Mediterranean flavor. Go ahead
and give this colorful dish a try!
INGREDIENTS - 30MIN TO PREPARE, SERVES 4-6
1 large eggplant, skin on, cubed
1 cucumber, diced
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
1 bell pepper, diced
1 small onion, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 cloves garlic, peeled
Salt & pepper to taste
1 box couscous
1 lemon, juiced
3/4 cup black olives, sliced
1/3 cup fresh parsley, chopped
1/3 cup fresh basil, chopped
1 1/2 cups feta cheese, cubed

WE ARE NEED OF ORGANIC HERDS. PLEASE CONTACT US AT THE NUMBERS ABOVE.
PREPARATION
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Optional: Prepare eggplant by salting generously and leaving
in a colander for 1-2 hours. Before cooking, rinse the salt off,
and pat dry with a paper towel.
Place eggplant, onions, and whole garlic cloves in a pan and
toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Place in oven and Roast
for 15 minutes.
While the eggplant is roasting, cook couscous according to
package directions, then transfer to a large salad bowl.
Remove baking dish from oven, and transfer garlic cloves
to a separate plate. Use 1 or 2 forks to mash garlic cloves into
a chunky paste. Coat the eggplant with mashed garlic and set
aside to cool.
Add cucumber, tomatoes, bell pepper, roasted veggie mix,
lemon juice, olives, parsley, and basil to the couscous. Toss with
2 tablespoons olive oil to combine. Salt and pepper to taste.
Gently fold in feta and refrigerate until ready to serve, at
least 15 minutes.

FACT OF THE DAY:
A newly born Kodiak brown bear can weigh less than one
pound. As it grows up, its weight may increase as much as
1,000 times. If human babies grew this much, as adults they
would weigh over 6,000 lbs.
THOUGHT OF THE DAY:

are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”

Molecular Machines
A molecular machine is a minute mechanism consisting of
molecular components that perform mechanical-like movements
in response to specific stimuli. Chemists have synthesized a
number of simple molecular machines, including molecular
propellers and molecular motors, the latter of which are powered
by light or reactions with other molecules and are capable of
unidirectional rotation. Far more complex biological versions
of these artificial nanomachines are found in living cells.

Ansgar (801 CE)
The patron saint of Scandinavia, Ansgar was a missionary
and the first archbishop of Hamburg. He was sent by Louis I
to help King Harald Christianize Denmark and King Bjorn
Christianize Sweden. He initiated a mission to all Scandinavians
and Slavs and was appointed archbishop of Hamburg in 832.
When Sweden and Denmark returned to paganism by 845,
Ansgar thwarted the pagan rebellion. He was recognized as a
saint soon after his death.

Minecraft Meetups at the
Cazenovia Public Library
Do you love exploring the creative worlds of Minecraft, but
are tired of playing alone? This fall, children ages 8 and up are
invited to grab their personal devices and head to the Cazenovia
Public Library for “Minecraft Meetups.” In these weekly
sessions, local Minecraft enthusiasts will have the chance to
gather together, meet new friends, discuss strategy, and enjoy
an afternoon of collective fun! The first Thursday meetup will
be held September 15th at 3:00 pm in the Community Room.
Since its release in 2009, Minecraft has become a global
sensation. Rated E for everyone, this award-winning game
is available on multiple platforms, including computers,
smartphones, tablets, Xbox and PlayStation. Players are
dropped into a randomly generated world where they dig up

(mine) three-dimensional blocks to build (craft) different tools
and structures. Minecraft is described as a “sandbox game,” in
which players create their own gaming experience by exploring,
interacting with, and modifying a virtual landscape. There are no
stated objectives nor is there a set path that players must follow.
Thus, the game allows for an unprecedented level of freedom,
permitting players to explore, discover, and create without the
constraints of rules or the pressure of competition.
Minecraft has two major game modes. In creative mode,
players are given access to an unlimited supply of blocks to
create anything and everything they can imagine. In survival
mode, users are responsible for procuring resources themselves
and for keeping their characters alive, using problem-solving
and decision-making skills to deal with hunger, enemies, and
other threats.

Minecraft has established a following of dedicated young
builders and adventurers. Meetups provide the perfect
opportunity for players to connect in a safe and collaborative
environment. Such gatherings encourage children to engage in
a group setting, socialize with their peers, and work as part of
a team, all while developing critical thinking and technologyrelated skills!

A Prayer for Students
Posted by Mark and Jill Herringshaw
Tune your ears to the world of Wisdom;
set your heart on a life of Understanding.
That’s right—if you make Insight your priority,
and won’t take no for an answer,
Searching for it like a prospector panning for gold,
like an adventurer on a treasure hunt,
Believe me…
you’ll have come upon the Knowledge of God.

Father,
I lift up the students in our lives who are starting a new
school year. Please grant them teachable hearts, curious minds,
energetic spirits, hearty appetites for learning, and souls that
are sensitive to the needs of those around them. Tune their ears
to the truth – to the knowledge of God, for from You flows all
true knowledge.
Increase the capacities of their intellects, Lord. Teach them
to reign in and silence all rogue, negative thoughts. Give them
faith in You, faith in your promises, hope for their destinies,
and a desire to run the race and never give up.
Provide godly friends and healthy influences. May they add
to the beauty and joy of their environments and not detract
with unwholesome talk or behavior. Give them kindred spirits
and make their friendships rich. Teach them the joy of sharing
and gratitude.
Spare them from pain and sickness. Grant them Your salvation
from disappointment, disadvantage, and the danger that the
enemy of their souls seeks to deploy to destroy them.
I want to be an example of virtue to them, and, so, dear Lord,
you must transform me by your Word to make me look like You.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen

properties of capillary walls. They can be atomically smooth
or rough, hydrophilic or hydrophobic, insulating or conductive,
electrically charged or neutral; the list goes on.
The voids can be made as cavities (to confine various
substances) or open-ended tunnels (to transport different gases
and liquids), which is of huge interest for fundamental research
and many applications. It is limited only by imagination what
such narrow tunnels with designer properties can potentially
do for us.
Properties of materials at this truly atomic scale are expected
to be quite different from those we are familiar with in our
macroscopic world. To demonstrate that this is the case of their
atomic-scale voids, the Manchester group tested how water
runs through those ultra-narrow pipes.
To everyone’s surprise, they found water to flow with
little friction and at high speed, as if the channels were many
thousands times wider than they actually are.

Radha Boya commented ‘This is an entirely new type of
nanoscale systems. Such capillaries were never imagined, even
in theory. No one thought that this degree of accuracy in design
could be possible. New filtration, desalination, gas separation
technologies are kind of obvious directions but there are so
many others to explore’.
Sir Andre added ‘Making something useful out of an empty
space is certainly cute. Finding that this space offers so much
of new science is flabbergasting. Even with hindsight, I did
not expect the idea to work so well. There are myriads of
possibilities for research and development, which now need
to be looked at. We are stunned by the choice.’

Now a Manchester group led by postdoctoral researcher
Radha Boya and Nobel laureate Andre Geim show how to make
the impossible possible, as reported in Nature.
The new technology is elegant, adaptable and strikingly
simple. In fact, it is a kind of antipode of the famous material
graphene. When making graphene, people often take a piece of
graphite and use Scotch tape to extract a single atomic plane of
carbon atoms, graphene. The remaining graphite is discarded.
In this new research, Manchester scientists similarly extracted
a strip of graphene from graphite, but discarded the graphene
and focused on what was left: an ultra-thin cavity within the
graphite crystal.
Such atomic scale cavities can be made from various
materials to achieve not only a desired size but also to choose

The Old Town of Eaton Museum will
be hosting a celebration to mark 20
years of hosting special fall weekends.
20 years ago Back Street Mary started Fall Festival History
Weekend at Eaton whose then museum was in Messere’s house
the historic Wood House in Eaton. From there it progressed
to over 20 historic sites in 3 counties that used a passport to
promote all the smaller societies that can never be open daily
because of lack of volunteers and back roads travelers. The
event ran for 8 years with Eaton yearly celebrating a special
“History Day”.
For her efforts Messere won the then Upstate History Alliance
Award (today’s Museumwise) for her coordinating.
This year also marks the 20th Anniversary of Old Town
Folks Inc. the Eaton museum group that runs the museum in
Eaton and puts on Eaton Day each Memorial Day Monday.
The group now has an offshoot call Friends of the Old Town

The event will kick off on Thursday night September 22nd.

“I am sorry I have acted wrongly and broken your Law. I
did it to save Unc Nunkie, and thought I would not be found
out. But I am guilty of this act and whatever punishment you
think I deserve I will suffer willingly.”
Ozma smiled more brightly, then, and nodded graciously.
“You are forgiven,” she said. “For, although you have

you have been punished enough. Soldier, release Ojo the

Film Trivia...
1. Die Hard originated from the failed script of Commando 2.
2. Samuel L. Jackson demanded that the studio keep Snakes
on a Plane as the title because it was the only reason he accepted
the role.
3. Rather than use CGI, Tim Burton had 40 squirrels trained
to crack nuts for Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.
4. Due to a zipper breaking, Olivia Newton-John had to be
sewn into the trousers she wears in the last carnival scene of
Grease.
5. The sounds made by the Brachiosaurs in Jurassic Park
were a combination of whale and donkey sounds.
6. In National Treasure, the good guys in the movie use
Google and the bad guys use Yahoo!
7. Django Unchained is the first time in 16 years that Leonardo
DiCaprio didn’t get the top billing.
8. For Dr. Strangelove, Peter Sellers was paid $1 million, 55

9. Ryan Gosling was cast as Noah in The Notebook because
the director wanted someone “not handsome.”

“I beg your pardon; I’m Ojo the Unlucky,” said the boy.
“At this moment you are lucky,” said she. “Release him,
Soldier, and let him go free.”
The people were glad to hear Ozma’s decree and murmured
their approval. As the royal audience was now over, they began
to leave the Throne Room and soon there were none remaining
except Ojo and his friends and Ozma and her favorites.
The girl Ruler now asked Ojo to sit down and tell her all his
story, which he did, beginning at the time he had left his home
in the forest and ending with his arrival at the Emerald City and
his arrest. Ozma listened attentively and was thoughtful for some
moments after the boy had finished speaking. Then she said:

“The Crooked Magician was wrong to make the Glass Cat
and the Patchwork Girl, for it was against the Law. And if he had
not unlawfully kept the bottle of Liquid of Petrifaction standing
on his shelf, the accident to his wife Margolotte and to Unc
Nunkie could not have occurred. I can understand, however,
that Ojo, who loves his uncle, will be unhappy unless he can
save him. Also I feel it is wrong to leave those two victims
standing as marble statues, when they ought to be alive. So
I propose we allow Dr. Pipt to make the magic charm which
will save them, and that we assist Ojo to find the things he is
seeking. What do you think, Wizard?”
“That is perhaps the best thing to do,” replied the Wizard.
“But after the Crooked Magician has restored those poor people
to life you must take away his magic powers.”

“I will,” promised Ozma.
“Now tell me, please, what magic things must you find?”
continued the Wizard, addressing Ojo.
“The three hairs from the Woozy’s tail I have,” said the boy.
“That is, I have the Woozy, and the hairs are in his tail. The

“You may take it and keep it,” said Ozma. “That will not

The Wizard shook his head. “That,” said he, “will be a hard
task, but if you travel far enough you may discover it.”
“I am willing to travel for years, if it will save Unc Nunkie,”
declared Ojo, earnestly.
“Then you’d better begin your journey at once,” advised
the Wizard.
Dorothy bad been listening with interest to this conversation.
Now she turned to Ozma and asked: “May I go with Ojo, to
help him?”
“Would you like to?” returned Ozma.
“Yes. I know Oz pretty well, but Ojo doesn’t know it at all.
I’m sorry for his uncle and poor Margolotte and I’d like to help
save them. May I go?”
“If you wish to,” replied Ozma.
“If Dorothy goes, then I must go to take care of her,” said the
Scarecrow, decidedly. “A dark well can only be discovered in
some out-of-the-way place, and there may be dangers there.”
“You have my permission to accompany Dorothy,” said
Ozma. “And while you are gone I will take care of the Patchwork

“Very well,” replied Ozma.
“But I see no need for Ojo to

“I prefer to remain here,”
said the cat. “I’ve nearly been

already, and if they’re going
into dangers it’s best for me to
keep away from them.”
“Let Jellia Jamb keep her

Dorothy. “We won’t need to

he ought to be saved because
of the three hairs in his tail.”
“Better take me along,”
said the Woozy.
