KINGSBURY HALL PRESENTS IS NOW
20152016SEASON
Last June I left the land of 10,000 lakes, friends, family, and a comfortable job
to return to the breathtaking mountains of the West. What lured me, besides
the temperate climate, the amazing proximity of the peaks of the Wasatch
Front, and the vibrant city thriving in the valley below? A new opportunity to
weave creativity and the arts into a campus and a community in inspiring,
impactful, and interesting ways.
As I settled into my new role, I listened to many stories about our program’s
home, Kingsbury Hall. This historic venue means all sorts of things to all sorts
of people, from the place where they saw their first rock concert, to the stage
where they come to see renowned artists like Wynton Marsalis and Pilobolus,
to the recital venue for thousands of local ballerinas. Powerful experiences,
and a great foundation.
As the vision of bringing an abundance of creative and cultural experiences
to our community expands, our work has grown beyond the foundation of
Kingsbury Hall: Through performances in other venues (like the Marriott
Center for Dance or Libby Gardner Hall), by connecting artists with a variety
of people (like kids and teachers in our public schools or students at SLCC),
and by creating partnerships to deepen our impact (with groups like the
Division of Medical Ethics & Humanities to touch Medical School students).
We are excited to share this evolution with the community, and look forward
to welcoming you to a UtahPresents experience in the new season, wherever,
or whatever, it might be.

Blue collar Joe grapples with his red state ideals when
he realizes the measures he must take to care for his
wife. A surprisingly tender love story about an everyday
American guy caught in a life and death struggle with
the health care system, Joe finds the bedrock of his life,
marriage and self-identity shifting under him.
If you like powerful drama that challenges us to ask
the questions that make a difference, this is a play you

Miss Nelson can’t control her crazy classroom because she’s just too nice.
But when she disappears, her replacement is the recess-canceling, homeworkoverloading substitute teacher Viola Swamp. See local talent onstage as
children from the University of Utah Youth Theatre perform this delightful
adaptation of the classic story by Harry Allard and James Marshall about
the lengths the class will go to bring back their beloved Miss Nelson.

For 45 years, Caroll Spinney has been beloved by generations of children as the man
behind Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. A loving portrait of the man in the
yellow suit, the film features extraordinary footage of Spinney’s earliest collaborations with
Jim Henson. As the yellow feathers give way to grey hair, it is the man, not the puppet,
who will steal your heart. After the film, Spinney will be live on stage in conversation with
with KUED’s Ken Verdoia.
Start off your Chinese New Year celebration
with the award-winning young musical prodigy,
Chinese accordionist Tian Jianan. Winner of
multiple international competitions, she will
perform an impressive program, including the
2013 Coupe Mondiale best original solo work
winner composed specifically for her, Beijing
2012. This FREE performance will reveal the
accordion’s complexity and grace, moving it
beyond the traditions of the polka hall.
If you grew up watching Sesame Street and learned about the world through Big Bird’s eyes,
this is a can’t-miss chance to hear directly from the man behind the Muppet.
You will enjoy this performance if you appreciate
international music and classically trained artistry.

Taking inspiration from the woods
surrounding their own real-life family
farm, Cirque Alfonse’s talented
tumblers and musicians create a
crazily unique acrobatic experience
set in the world of loggers and
traditional Canadian farm life. There
are balancing acts on tree stumps,
banjo sounds and men with bushy
beards performing synchronized
axe juggling – with real axes.
If you enjoy daring feats of strength
and skill, but are ready for a new
cast of acrobats whose sense of fun
and humor is as abundant as their
beards, then this is show you won’t
want to miss.

Based in NYC, this musical phenomenon is
bringing down boundaries between countries
and now, with the first national tour of past
globalFEST artists, is also crossing state lines.
Come out for an evening of not just one, but
three, high-energy artists. Emeline Michele,
one of the premiere Haitian songwriters of
her generation, Casuarina, an irreverent and
innovative samba band from Brazil, and
Brushy One-String, the Jamaican musician
whose pulse and ingenuity show that the
island’s music is about far more than reggae.

ADD-ON PERFORMANCE OF THE JAZZSLC SEASON
A tour de force of percussion and rhythm, this once in a lifetime session
brings together living legends, Savion Glover and Jack DeJohnette. Taught
by greats like Sammy Davis, Jr., and Gregory Hines, Glover catapulted to
fame as The Tap Dance Kid, then captivated the world with Bring in ‘da
Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk and as the live action dancer behind Mumble the
penguin in Disney’s Happy Feet. DeJohnette, one of the most influential
jazz drummers of our time, has an impressive list of collaborators, including
Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, and Jason Moran. Glover and DeJohnette
