As parents most of us are
proud of our children but
recent studies have found
that we don't always do a
good job of communicating that feeling. That's
unfortunate because when
kids are aware of the pride
their parents have in them
the result is usually a much
stronger relationship. And
a stronger relationship can
be important as our kids
get older, want more independence and often find
themselves in conflict with
parental rules and regulations.
So how does one go
about effectively communicating the pride that you
feel for a son or daughter?
One starting point is not to
praise everything, especially the low-effort accomplishments that your child
knows isn't really worthy
of praise ("Great job of finishing that bowl of cereal,
kiddo!").
Offering praise for things
that really aren't challenging and really aren't much
of an accomplishment ends
up turning all of our praise
into "white noise," background words that don't
carry much meaning or
worth and which our kids
often ignore.
One hint that experts
offer on effective ways to
communicate pride in your
child is to focus on the
process, rather than simply
on the outcome. When a
child is working hard and
putting in extra effort, a
parent offering praise is
heard and appreciated.
What you are doing is
highlighting the effort and
initiative of your child,
rather than focusing on
only the results.
When we praise our kids
for putting in that extra
effort, it becomes a reward
that reinforces the work
they're doing and makes it
more likely that they will
want to continue to try as
hard in the future.
It's important not to simply assume that our kids
are aware that we're proud
of them. And it is also
important to find a correct
balance between offering
too little or too much
praise. We have to recognize when a child is pushing himself or herself to try
something new or to work
a little harder. That's the
time to compliment and let
your child see how pleased
you are of the effort they're
making. The end result
may not be a first place trophy or any measurable success, but you want your
child to know you're proud
of his or her trying.
It's important for parents
to be proud of their children and what they do. But
it's even more important
that that pride is clearly
communicated.

Top driving distractions revealed
as “100 Deadliest Days’ begin
Charlotte, N.C. – Over
the past five years, more
than 5,000 people have
been killed in crashes
involving teen drivers during the “100 Deadliest
Days,” the period starting
at Memorial Day when
teen crash deaths historically climb. As the summer
driving season begins, the
AAA Foundation for
Traffic Safety is releasing a
follow-up study confirming that nearly 60 percent
of teen crashes involve distractions behind the wheel.
The research also finds a
disturbing trend showing
that texting and social
media use are on the rise
amongst teen drivers.
Crashes for teen drivers
increase significantly during the summer months
because teens drive more
during this time of year.
The average number of
deaths
from
crashes
involving teen drivers ages
16-19 increased by 16 percent per day compared to
other days of the year in the
past five years during the
“100 Deadliest Days”.
Since 2010, 509 people in
North Carolina have died
in crashes involving teen
drivers. Just in 2015, 66
teens (age 15-19) died in
traffic collisions in South
Carolina.
This year’s new followup report from the AAA
Foundation is part of the
most comprehensive eightyear research project ever
conducted into crash
videos of teen drivers. In
collaboration with researchers at the University of
Iowa, the AAA Foundation
analyzed the moments
leading up to a crash in
more than 2,200 videos
captured from in-car dash
cameras. The latest report
compared new crash
videos with those captured
from 2007 -2012 and found
consistent trends in the top
three distractions for teens
when behind the wheel in
the moments leading up to
a crash:
* Talking or attending to
other passengers in the
vehicle: 15 percent of
crashes
* Talking, texting or
operating a cell phone: 12
percent of crashes
* Attending to or looking
at something inside the
vehicle: 11 percent of
crashes
Since 2010, 16,662 people in North Carolina have
been injured in teen distracted driving related
crashes.
“This new research
shows that distraction continues to be one of the leading causes of crashes for
teen drivers. By better
understanding how teens
are distracted on the road
and reminding them to disconnect and drive, we can
better prevent deaths
throughout
the
100
Deadliest Days and the rest
of the year,” said AAA
Carolinas President and
CEO Dave Parsons.
Researchers also found
that how teens use their cell
phone when behind the
wheel changed significantly over the course of the
study. In the moments
leading up to a crash, teens
were more likely to be texting or looking down at the
phone than talking on it.
This supports findings by
Pew Research Center,
which shows text messaging has become a key component in day-to-day interactions amongst teenagers.
Fifty-five percent of teens
spend time every day texting, sending an estimated
80 text messages per day.
“It’s no secret that teens
are extremely connected to
their cell phones,” said
Tiffany Wright President of
AAA Carolinas Traffic
Safety Foundation. “Many
teens are texting or using
social media behind the
wheel more often than in
the past, which is making
an unsafe situation even
worse.”
Research by the Virginia
Tech
Transportation
Institute found that texting
creates a crash risk 23
times worse than driving
while not distracted. A
recent AAA Foundation
survey shows that nearly
50 percent of teen drivers
admitted they had read a
text message or email
while driving in the past 30
days. NHTSA’s National
Occupant Protection Use
Survey also shows that
from 2007 to 2014, the percentage of young drivers
seen visibly manipulating a
hand-held device quadrupled.
In preparation for the
“100 Deadliest Days”,
AAA encourages parents to
educate their teen about the
dangers of distracted driving and monitor their
actions behind the wheel.
Parents should:
* Have conversations
early and often about the
dangers of distraction.
* Make a parent-teen
driving agreement that sets
family rules against distracted driving.
* Teach by example and
minimize
distractions
when driving.
TeenDriving.AAA.com
has a variety of tools to
help prepare parents and
teens for the dangerous
summer driving season.
The online AAA StartSmart program also offers
great resources for parents
on how to become effective
in-car coaches as well as
advice on how to manage
their teen’s overall driving
privileges. Teens preparing
for the responsibility of
driving should enroll in a
driver education program
that teaches how to avoid
driver distraction and other
safety skills.
Here are AAA's top 10
tips to avoid distractions
while driving:
1. Fully focus on driving
and don't allow any activity
to divert your attention.
Actively scan the road, use
your mirrors and watch out
for
pedestrians
and
cyclists.
2. Store loose items that
could roll around in the car,
so you don't feel tempted to
reach for them on the floor
or the seat.
3. Make adjustments
before your drive. Address
vehicle systems like your
GPS, seats, mirrors, climate controls and sound
systems before hitting the
road. Decide on your route
and check traffic conditions ahead of time.
4. Finish dressing and
personal grooming at home
- before you get on the
road.
5. Snack smart. If possible, eat meals or snacks
before or after your trip,
not while driving.
6. Secure children and
pets before getting underway. If they need your
attention, pull off the road
safely to care for them.
Reaching into the back seat
can cause you to lose control of the vehicle.
7. Don't use cell phones
while driving - handheld or
hands-free - except in
absolute
emergencies.
Never use text messaging,
email functions, video
games or the Internet with
a wireless device, including those built into the
vehicle, while driving.
8. If you have passengers, enlist their help so
you can focus safely on
driving.
9. If another activity
demands your attention,
instead of trying to attempt
it while driving, pull off the
road and stop your vehicle
in a safe place. To avoid
temptation, power down or
stow devices before heading out.
10. As a general rule, if
you cannot devote your full
attention
to
driving
because of another activity,
it's a distraction. Take care
of it before or after your
trip, not while driving
behind the wheel.
‘This program is life changing’ - Project SEARCH spreads throughout South Carolina
Four Upstate South
Carolina
organizations
teamed together to bring the
first Project SEARCH program to South Carolina in
2014.
Now, school systems
across the state are following the lead of Dorman
High School, Spartanburg
Regional
Healthcare
System, Vocational Rehabilitation Department and
Upstate Workforce Investment Board in developing
their own Project SEARCH
internship programs for
young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. School District 5
of Lexington and Richland
counties started their program in 2015.
“We visited Spartanburg
Medical Center several
times and talked to educators, job coaches and hospital staff,” said Angie
Slatton, PhD, Director of
Special Services for School
District 5 of Lexington and
Richland Counties. “Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s experience
and success was key to
moving forward with our
project. The Spartanburg
team started a program that
I believe will grow into
partnerships and new programs all over the state.”
The School District of
Pickens County starting
their first Project SEARCH
in the fall of 2016.
“Quite simply, our students with disabilities need
to have more opportunities
for
gainful
life-long
employment.
Project
SEARCH had this as its
mission, it was a partnership that we needed to
make happen,” said Cathy
Ashton, director of Special
Services for the School
District of Pickens County.
Project SEARCH teaches
student interns job skills
and work ethics, but also
builds character and confidence, according to Sam
Napier, Spartanburg Medical Center and Dorman
High Project SEARCH
instructor.
“This program is life
changing,” Napier said.
“It’s so successful because
the hospital is so gracious in
giving students the opportunity to show what they can
do. We see growth as the
students deal with adult,
business situations.”
On Monday, May 23,
Spartanburg’s
second
Project SEARCH class
graduated eight students, all
of whom are employed
with jobs across the

Hall, Md. native was seventh in the conference with a
.547 slugging percentage
and finished eighth in batting average. Brittain also

appeared in 12 games with a
2-2 record and 6.75 ERA

with 38 strikeouts. Brittain
set a new career-high with
nine strikeouts against Rider
on February 28 and tied that
mark with nine strikeouts at
No. 2 South Carolina on
May 4, including striking
out five of the first six
Gamecock batters he faced.
Jackson claimed a spot on
the Second Team as a starting pitcher after he went 4-3
with a 4.10 ERA in 13
appearances. Jackson led the
Spartans, and finished second in the A-Sun, with 86
strikeouts. The Pied-mont
native struck out a careerhigh 13 batters in a complete
game at The Citadel on
March 8 and earned A-Sun
Co-Pitcher of the Week on
March 14. His performance
at The Citadel followed a 12
strikeout game at Furman on
March 1. Jackson earned the
win at Lipscomb on April 8
as he struck out eight batters
while allowing three runs in
seven
innings
during
Upstate's 6-5 victory.
Jackson is tied for 69th
nationally in strikeouts and
is 51st in strikeouts per nine
innings with 10.37.
Ortiz is the first Spartan to
be named Freshman of the
Year in school history and
sixth to earn a spot on the
All-Freshman Team. After
making his first appearance
on March 18 against
Radford, Ortiz finished the
season with a team-leading
.352 batting average with 37
hits, five triples and 18 RBI
in 105 at-bats. Ortiz went
12-for-25 with seven runs
scored, seven RBI, two doubles and a triple in his first
six games. He had 13 multihit games and five multiRBI games with a careerhigh four runs during
Upstate's 21-18 victory over
FGCU on May 8. On May
19 against Jacksonville,
Ortiz had the game-winning
single to give Upstate a 4-3
victory in 10 innings. A
native of Winter Springs,
Fla., Ortiz tied for the teamand league-lead with five
triples, and tied for second
on the team with six stolen
bases. Defensively, Ortiz
finished with a .949 fielding
percentage and helped turn
11 double plays.
Statepoint: Gift guide for DIY dads and graduates
(StatePoint) Father’s Day
and graduation season are the
perfect opportunities to beef
up your gift recipient’s
garage -- and high-quality
tools are a must for anyone -from DIY novices to professional handymen.
“A quality tool goes a long
way toward getting a job
done quickly and efficiently,”
says Jon DeArment, president and COO, Channellock,
Inc., a leading manufacturer
of tools. “Damaged gear can
slow down work and be dangerous to the user.”
Here are a few gifts to consider:
• Every one needs a good
set of screwdrivers designed
to withstand
the rigors of
daily
use.
This is a great
gift idea for
different
budgets,
since screwdrivers can
typically be
purchased
individually
or in sets. A
good-quality
option should
feature a tube
and bits that pull out and
reverse easily to configure
the driver needed for each
job.
• No home should be with-
stress breakage.
• Replace a
clunky old
wrench with
something
better. Look
for a thinner
wrench that
can get into
hard to reach
areas, while
also featuring
greater jaw
capacity to
support larger
out a versatile plier. Consider
one durable enough that Dad
may be able to pass it on to
you one day. For example,
the American-made CHAN-
NELLOCK Straight Jaw
Tongue and Groove plier features laser heat-treated teeth
to provide a better grip and a
reinforcing edge to minimize
nuts and bolts.
• Looking to go big?
Consider a comprehensive
set of go-to tools useful for
different tasks. Take the
guesswork out of the equation with a great gift set, such
as the Tool Roll-3 PC
Professional Plier Set with
Tool Roll. Put together by
Channellock,
this
set
includes all the most popular
tools -- a lap joint cutting
plier, two different sizes of
their iconic Straight Jaw
Tongue and Groove Pliers, a
slip joint plier and a long
nose plier. These gifts are
available at local retail stores
and online at www.channellock.com.
Whatever tools you choose
this Dad and grad season, the
biggest joy will be hanging
out and completing a project
together with your gift.
