FY 2012 REPORT (OCT 1, 2011-SEPT 30, 2012) VIDANT ROANOKE-CHOWAN HOSPITAL, AHOSKIE VIDANT ROANOKE CHOWAN LEADERSHIP As of January 1, 2013 Board of Directors Barbara Earley, RN, Chair Dixie Harrell, RN , BSN Caleb Joe Forbes Timothy Frei, MD Truett Robertson Lou Rodriguez, MD Zenobia Smallwood, Ph.D. Patricia Weaver Ramsey Chief of Medical Staff Lou Rodriguez, MD Administrative Staff Susan S. Lassiter, FACHE, President Susan Mitchell, Vice President Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer Jon Graham, Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer We marked a big change in January 2012 as our health system became Vidant Health and we announced that our name had changed. Vidant Roanoke-Chowan’s promise of quality care and exceptional patient and family experience has remained the same. In clinical developments, we opened a pediatric unit and dedicated it as the Annie Eason Children’s Unit in memory of the Ahoskie native who was the beloved caregiver of three brothers from Philadelphia – Arnold, Jerome, and Spencer Zaslow. Their gift allowed us to expand children’s services to include a pediatric outpatient asthma program. In partnership with our physicians, we continued our record of outstanding quality, achieving zero harm to patients by exceeding 1,000 days without a serious safety event. The commitment and dedication of our physician leaders is evident in other measures including: • Zero cases of ventilator-associated pneumonia • Zero central-line infections • Zero serious events of harm and a 50 percent reduction in safety events (7 total) • A 53 percent reduction in total infections hospital wide (16 total infections in past year). We treated more emergency patients faster. Although the total number of emergency department visits increased 6.7 percent to 21,186 patient visits, we reduced wait times by 50 percent and shortened the average length of stay. We doubled the number of cardiac-monitored (telemetry) inpatient beds to 16. We also began a telehealth program enabling a critical care specialist at Vidant Medical Center to view a patient in our hospital and consult with our medical staff. This link allows patients to receive specialty care close to home and supports the physicians practicing here. The Joint Commission reaccredited our hospital, and we received a number of awards and recognitions. VHA Inc., a national network of hospitals, recognized us for reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients, which means we are keeping our patients healthier and providing resources for them to better manage chronic illness and improve their quality of life. The Vidant Wellness Center in Ahoskie had a great year, ending the year with more than 2,000 members and 72,000 member visits. Group exercise classes and participation nearly doubled, and new programs were added. The voice of the patient and family was part of many decisions. Patient advisors served on committees and advisory groups. One patient helped with the design of a handicappedaccessible bathroom. Patient experience surveys improved this year, and we ranked in the 77th percentile compared to other hospitals in the country. In the area of community benefit, we provided a free community health fair in May during Hospital Week, an outreach activity we intend to continue. We logged the highest-ever number of hours of community health education and screenings with seminars, health fairs, classes and support groups, including two cancer support groups in Gates and Hertford counties. Staff served on boards and councils, offered screenings for breast cancer, cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes. Monthly Senior Breakfast Club and Diabetes Support Group meetings reached hundreds of community members throughout the year. The Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Foundation distributed more than $100,000 in community grant funds to address community health needs. The Hosts for the Hospital fund-raising event garnered $25,000 for cancer care services. Hospital leaders helped form the Hertford Health Maintenance Alliance, a collaborative network of community agencies to serve as a safety net for indigent and uninsured people. We look forward to serving you in the year ahead. Susan S. Lassiter, FACHE President Vidant Health is one of the largest health care systems in North Carolina.
