The Rules
1. “Skyglobe Challenge – Transafrican Air Race” is aviation sporting event governed by:
a. Federation Aeronautique International (FAI) Rules
• World record – Speed over the recognized course
• FAI Sporting code
b. Skyglobe Rules and Regulations
c. All applicable Rules of the Air and International Civil Aviation Regulations related to safe and
regular operation of the airplane (responsibility of each team)
2. Aim of the race is:
a. to circumnavigate the African continent along the route defined by the organisers in shortest
time
b. To set the overall world record based on “speed over the recognized course” for the entire race
course
c. To set as many as possible individual, sector world records based on “speed over the recognized
course” rules
d. To win Skyglobe Trophy presented by the Race Board
3. Winner of the race is considered to be the team that circumnavigates the African continent in shortest
time in respective aircraft group and category. Special event prizes and achievements are announced by
the Race Board after the event.
4. Participating airplanes are categorized in accordance with FAI classification in term of weight/mass
and propulsion as defined in this document.
5. Race will start from the Banjul, Gambia. Planned start date is 01 January 2016. Ad-Hoc changes
in
opening of the race start line associated with operational conditions, weather, ATC, airport
restrictions
are within Race Board area of responsibility.
6. Race start line will remain opened for 24 hours.
7. Race starting sequence is determined by date/time when valid event registration has been received and
admission fees are paid in full amount.
8. Team has a right to postpone departure within the race start opening window. In such a case, team
delaying their initial start position is assigned the last slot available at that moment in time
(“out of the queue goes to the end of the queue” concept)

9. Each team must present, no later than 30 days prior start of the event:
a. Proof of airworthiness of the airplane
b. Proof that equipment on board is compliant with the route to be flown
c. Proof of crew competence for all crewmembers planned to be on board
d. Proper, valid aircraft insurance certificates
10. Each team is responsible to arrange:
a. All necessary passports, visas, declarations and health precautions (vaccinations) for all persons
on board
b. Overflight and landing permits as well as airport slots and other necessary clearances for regular
operation of the flights
c. All necessary ground services, handling and fuel supply at the airport stops
d. Maintenance assistance when needed
e. Sufficient funding for the crew during the event
11. Each team is obliged to present to the race board the planned course indicating all planned stops.
In addition, stops used for speed over the recognized course record attempt must be clearly
indicated
on official FAI forms.

12. Each team is obliged to plan stops in race host cities elected by the Race Board.
13. Landing on alternate airports for weather or other operational reasons is allowed.
Team shall re-position to originally planned stop once operating conditions are met. Exception
to this rule is allowed if team decides to switch to alternative course and alternate airport is
a part of this, previously declared, alternative course.
14. Additional stops ( in addition to mandatory stops in host cities) are chosen by each individual team
in order to conform to team`s individual race strategies. Touch and Go is accepted as a valid
stop at the planned host cities.
15. Teams may evaluate as many as necessary alternative courses. Alternative course must comply with
the same rules as initial (main) planned course.
16. Each team may switch to alternative course, only once during the race, after official observer is notified
about such a change. Alternative course shall still pass through as many as possible host
cities.
17. Each team is responsible to obtain the valid proof of arrival/departure time from all airports during
the race (from ATC Tower or AIS office) in accordance with FAI rules.

18. Teams may need to arrange the official FAI observer on board. FAI observer may be elected by the
team providing that person proposed meets the requirements to act as FAI observer. It is joint
responsibility of FAI Observer and the Team to assure that FAI Observer holds all necessary
documents (passport, visas,..etc for the entire trip. Race board may assist with proposing the
qualified FAI observer when necessary.
19. At least one crewmember (records claimant / race mission commander) must be present on board the
airplane during the entire event and on all flights
20. All crewmembers must have a valid FAI sporting license for purpose of validation the official FAI world
record. FAI Sporting license may be obtained from local authorities/aeroclubs. Skyglobe
Racing Ltd may assist in this matter.
21. Each team is responsible to assure that all crewmembers are qualified to operate the airplane as per
the mission requirements and that sufficient number of crew members is planned for the
entire mission. List of all crewmembers, with copy of relevant pilot licenses and FAI sporting
license must be made available before the start of the event.
22. Replacement/stand-by crew members may be used on the short notice during the event.
Race Control shall be informed when stand-by crew member takes position on the

participating airplane.
23. Teams are allowed to accept and carry owners or guests on board the airplane during the event.
Details of all persons carried on board, must be provided to the Race Board. Each team is
responsible for correctness, completeness of all required documents for all persons on board
the airplane.
24. Teams shall assure sufficient number of crewmembers is used during the event, so that pilot fatigue
is mitigated and proper work/rest patterns are in place to guarantee safety of flight operation.
Teams may need to contact their local authorities, inform them about the intention to
participate in the event and, if necessary, obtain confirmation/waiver from the Civil Aviation
Authority authorizing the team to participate in the event. Race Board may assist to satisfy
this requirement.
25. Initial record claims shall be provided on official FAI forms no later than 3 days after the event.
26. Full, complete documentation required for ratification of the record must reach FAI and Race Board
latest 120 days after the start of the event. Race Organisers will assist to teams in developing
mechanisms and channels to assure this requirement is met.
27. Teams register for the race by filling the Skyglobe Challenge Registration Form and providing the
non-refundable race admission fee of USD 5000.-

28. Transafrican Challenge routing will follow pre-defined path through 11 host cities

29. List of records will be updated in cooperation with FAI. Ratified, current records as well as
record-claims in procedure at the time of the race are considered as relevant for the race
result evaluation.
30. In order to qualify for new record, new performance must be at least 1% better than
existing, ratified record

Measurement And Inspections
31. Distance measurements for all sectors are expressed in kilometers.
32. Distance between stops in the race are based on great circle distance between airport reference points
coordinates determined according to WGS84 system and published in AIP
33. Speed measurements for purpose of determination of speed records are expressed in kilometers per
hour (km/h)
34. For purpose of this document, terms “mass” and “weight” have identical meaning.
35. Mass (weight) measurements are expressed in kilograms. In term of the airplane weight, if mass/
weight is expressed in other measures (i.e. lbs) – such a measurement will be converted to
kilograms with rounding up to the next 1 kg.
36. Aircraft weight (mass) used to determine competition category/class is the highest aircraft weight
during the performance.
37. Weight is determined by weighing or actual and correct weight and balance records. Teams are
obliged to provide actual weight and balance records (loadsheets) for each leg, as well
as requested weight and balance documentation including last aircraft weighing report
(showing measurements and calculation of aircraft Basic Empty Weight or Dry Operating
Weight), records/manuals indicating max constructive ZFW; TOW AND LW.
38. All times used in official reports and measurements are in UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) with up
to 1 second precision (if seconds are not reported on official forms, 59th second in reported
minute will be used for arrivals, and 1st second of the reported minute will be used for
departures).
39. Official source for time recorded are clock in the ATC Tower, GPS time from flight tracker or integral
certified on-board systems (FMS, ACARS…).

Equipment Supplied By The Race Organisation
40. Race Organisers will provide approved flight tracker to all teams.
41. Flight tracker shall be operated in accordance to instructions provided by the Race Organisers and
shall be operational during the entire race.
42. Teams are responsible to provide proper power supply for flight tracker equipment in accordance to
technical specifications
43. Failure of flight tracker will not disqualify the team as long as other methods to obtain proof of
adherence to planned course and arrival/departure times at each stop can be obtained and
verified.
44. Race Organisers will provide each team with, as precise as possible, position and progress report of
all participants in the event, so individual teams can monitor progress of the event and adjust
their race strategy
45. Race Organisers will provide all necessary FAI forms and brief the teams about the rules and
procedures associated with world records as well as with relevant Race regulations relevant
for the participating teams.

Safety and security
46. Race Board, in cooperation with local authorities and international regulators will take all
reasonable measures to ensure:
a. Flight Safety - Operational aspect
b. Airports – safety and security for teams and visitors
c. Security and safety of lounges, VIP event venues and press rooms
d. Overall security, management of mass/spectators if required
e. Proper risk assessment and mitigation for any concern raised by teams or officials

Language, Amendments, Interpretations, Supplementary Notices
47. Official language of the event is English language.
48. Notice of Race and other relevant event rules may be altered, updated or modified if deemed necessary
by the Race Board. All participants and personnel related to the event organization will be
promptly notified in such a case. Revisions, amendments, interpretations and supplementary
notices will be clearly identified by “edition” or “revision” holding the successive numbering.
49. “Revision” is issued due smaller adaptation or change, while “Edition” is issued when changes are
affecting more than 25% of the document or when change is significant to the extent that
new edition of the document is necessary.
Communications during the Race/Event (not atc related)
50. All teams will assure proper communication with the Race Control during the entire event.
51. Communication with Race Control includes, but is not limited to:
a. Communication with the crew on the airplane before, during and after each flight
during the event
b. Communication with the team operations center
c. Communication with the team sponsors and supporters
52. Where technical conditions allow – teams shall provide live reporting using the air-ground
communications (voice, text, data), internet, social media and streaming.

Media Requirements and Media Rights
53. Race Board is responsible to arrange proper media access and coverage of the event.
54.
Team
representatives
are
obliged
to
participate
in
media
events
and
press
conferences as per the schedule and locations defined by the Race Board.
55. Access to event locations, venues, lounges, teams, crews, team operations centers,
Race Control and press conferences will be granted to accredited media representatives only.
Accreditations are responsibility of the Race Board and/or local partners.
56. “Skyglobe Racing Limited”, with headquarter in Suites 1201-4, Tower 2, The Gateway,
25-27 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong is the sole rights-owner of all
naming and media rights associated with Skyglobe Challenge – Round the World Air Race”.
57. No person may use, sell, copy or distribute any material associated to the event without
written approval received from Skyglobe Racing Ltd. This includes but is not limited to:
a. Live footage, streaming, filming or video footage of the event or related activities
b. Pictures, photos, flight data from air-ground systems, official event records and documents
c. Event-branded goods, logos, mascots, CD/DVD, memorabilia, books, exclusives associated to
the event

58. Skyglobe Challenge sponsorship and partnership arrangements conditions and models are
explained in the event brochure.

Liability And Responsibility
59. Skyglobe Racing officials and personnel have no liability to any other individual involved in the event
and shall not be responsible for any damage, incident, accident or loss of life or property
resulting from, or caused by operation of the airplane during the event. Same stands for liability
towards any third party or individual. Teams, airplane commanders and all crewmembers are
solely responsible for safety of flight
60.
Any
team
which
is
found
in
breach
of
safety
regulations
associated
with operation of an aircraft may be immediately disqualified.
61. Skyglobe Racing officials and personnel shall not be liable for any other party for any
loss of profits, loss of revenue or any indirect, consequential or special damages of any kind.
62. Participants and any other involved with Skyglobe event shall be deemed to have notice of these
exclusions and shall not make any claims or bring any proceedings of any nature in relation
to or arising out of the Skyglobe event against anyone involved in the organization or
management of the event.
63. Force Majeure. The Race Board shall not be liable to any participating team and any
others involved with the Race who have notice of the provisions of this document for any actual or
construed, loss or damage, costs, expenses or other claims for compensation arising as a direct or
indirect result of any cause beyond the reasonable control of the Race Board
Sustainability
64. All flights operated during the Transafrican Air Race event are intended to be carbon-neutral.
65. Race board agrees to participate in carbon offset for each tone of CO2 emissions created
during the event based on “VerusCarbonNeutral”, USA carbon offset rates.
66. Skyglobe Racing supports and promotes programmes associated with help/support to
children in need and educational programmes.

Advertising Regulations
67. Any advertising activity that involves use of “Skyglobe Challenge – Transafrican Air Race logo or
identity is subject to prior approval from Race Board.
68. Improper, offensive or ethically incorrect advertising is strictly prohibited.
Dispute Resolution and Responsibilities
69. Race Board and Race Committee are solely responsible for and are final authority in any
disputes raised during the race event.
70. Claims and disputes associated with official, FAI recognized world records are in jurisdiction
of FAI or local national aviation sporting authorities (NAC)

Code of Conduct
Skyglobe Challenge – Transafrican Air Race is based on sporting spirit, fair play and the fact that
participating in this event and completing the trip is already tremendous achievement and win
for every involved person or team.
Safety is absolute paramount in this event and shall not be compromised for any reason.
For all participants, assistance and help to other teams in need (especially in case of emergencies)
is far more important and is a higher priority than own record performance
