MAJOR GROWTH BRINGS
OPPORTUNITIES FOR THAILAND’S
WATER & WASTEWATER MARKETS
Managing water resources is essential to alleviate the consequences of natural disasters such as flooding
and drought. The function of existing water infrastructure (reservoirs, structural flood defenses, urban
drainage and irrigation systems) as well as water management practices are critical.
Water management is among Thailand’s top priorities. The Thai Government
recently approved the Water Resources Management Strategy (2015-2026),
consisting of six main plans:
Addressing water shortage for domestic use
Resolution of water shortage problems in the agricultural and industrial Sectors
Disaster prevention and mitigation
Water quality management
Upstream forest restoration and soil erosion prevention; and
Overall management. The Strategy will be overseen by the National Water
Board and chaired by the Prime Minister. Overall the Strategy is aimed at water
management for sustainable development.
Growth opportunities are arising for water management operations as the government pours resources
into tackling the problem of droughts and floods. In addition to existing infrastructure enhancement,
water resource expansion is also expected on the Eastern seaboard and in the North due to firms relocating
from the flood-prone central region.
The Thai government plans to invest 244 billion Baht (USD 7.5 billion) on urgent water management projects
over the next two years. The schemes are part of a new 10-year water management plan aimed at solving all
water-related problems in the Kingdom.
THAI WATER EXPO 2017

Major facts….
ASEAN WATER SERIES
WATER TREATMENT a booming industrial sector!
Wastewater is a major pollutant in Thailand with the main problem areas coming from both community and industrial sectors. For the past
two decades, the Thai government has invested in sewage and treatment systems that have cost about 83,000 million Thai Baht.
In Thailand, spending for water treatment is now estimated at around USD 1 billion p.a. and the water and wastewater equipment market
is projected to generate revenues of USD 177.3 million in 2017. The market is also expected to grow by an average of over 10% for the
next few years due to the growth in the real estate, industrial and agricultural sectors. The water and wastewater treatment equipment
market in Thailand is emerging as a popular destination for manufacturers of water-related equipment. It is expected to grow substantially
on the back of rising demand from municipal and industrial sectors. The growing population and increasing concerns about water
scarcity are driving the government to encourage water and wastewater treatment in both domestic and industrial applications.
