And Now A Word From Your Editor
Chairman’s Message:
It has been almost
a month since our convention in Charlotte,
NC. For those of you
who were able to attend, thank you for
coming. It was great seeing all of you. Our new
board member, Rob Giarretta, introduced us to the
“New Look” of the OTLS website and has since
added more but there is much to be done. A debt
of gratitude must be given to Rob for taking on this
task without remuneration. He has devoted his time
to making the website a better place to visit and as
time goes on, making it more interactive so members
can contact each other easily and our classified section will be enhanced by providing photos of items
for sale or trade making it easier to buy and sell. We
would like your input as to what you would like to
see on the website. Unless you become a participant
and not a bystander, we cannot create something that
you like to see. It is not to say we can do everything
given the limited investment we have at this time,
but unless you give us some guidance as to what
you would like, we can’t provide you with a website
you will all want to visit frequently. One thing we
need is members to send photos of unusual lighters
with what you know about them. This will make the
website and newsletter more interesting to you and to
prospective members.
This year’s winner of the Founders Award went
to Judith Sanders. For almost 30 years, Judith has
given of herself to building a great club. It is our job
to continue the work she has done.
A special thanks to Art Brooks for bringing
OTLS to Facebook. If you have not checked out the
To those I saw at the recent annual convention,
thank you for your participation, your loyalty to the
club and your devotion to the hobby. Most importantly, thank you for the good times you delivered
and the great memories I will cherish. Richie will be
providing highlights in a separate article.
Above all else, I know we are all in this hobby
for the fun. When it ceases to be enjoyable, we will
move on. But, in our quest for fun, we are expending
small and often enormous sums of money. That is an
investment worthy of deep thought.
When I pass on to the great semi-automatic Chinese lacquered and Mother-of-Pearly gates, I hope to
have met two goals. First I don’t want the government to get any money and I want my lighter collection to have staying power, if not value. I have made
elaborate plans to exhaust my bank account (including the Swiss one) as I take my last breath. I will
be clicking on iTunes to purchase Blood, Sweat and
Tears’ song “And When I Die” with my last 99 cents.
As for maintaining the value and desirability of
my lighter collection, that goal will take more planning and forward thinking. This is precisely what
motivates the Board. In our collective self-interests,
we must keep the club growing and new collectors
interested. If not, we will literally have piles of plastic and metal that we may as well bury with us.
Equally important, we want to see lighters unknown to us. We want to hear history from those
who know about lighters. We want the chance to
buy, sell and trade with other collectors. It is imperative that we have a thriving and vibrant collector environment in which we can operate.
Each of you has hundreds, if not thousands of
lighters. Whatever time you spend in raising awareness to our club will translate to a few shekels of
added value to each lighter. Is that not worth several

that is on our website under the tab “Ebay Sellers”.
Put a copy in all your packages. This is a must-do
for us to take advantage of the best free advertising
we have available. Again, please contact Rob about
adding the OTLS favicon to your listings that will
hot link to our website. The combination of regular and focused advertising along with our enhanced
website/newsletter can only benefit all of us.
To create a more robust and professional-appearing newsletter, Bob Gamboni has volunteered
to proof-read each issue and Art Brooks will be restarting a feature that disappeared some time back to
be called “In The Spotlight”. It will be an interview
of sorts with a fellow member. We ask that you read
this section with a view to contacting the member to
jumpstart a goal of more interaction between members. You’ll learn about the members, what they collect and perhaps others in the hobby with whom they
interact. Of course, I encourage you to reach out to
any and all members. Throw a dart at the roster and
make a call to whatever member is hit. What do you
have to lose?
We have reached an agreement with LCGB to
reprint some of their articles so that those of you who
are not members can enjoy their fine writing. Art
will be culling through their back issues seeking the
Best of the Best. In this regard, we strongly encourage you to consider joining their club.
As some of you may know, Art is also spearheading our efforts on Facebook. He took on this
challenge unsolicited and we loudly applaud him.
Like his work with “In The spotlight”, it will all lead
to a never-ending string of connections within our
sphere. Make the most of this opportunity.

Please review and leave comments. You will
enjoy the photos and we hope that you will add your
own.
At year’s end, we will be judging the best articles submitted by members. Please send in your
articles for a chance at the cash prizes donated by
Lolly Mastin in memory of her husband. First place
is $75.00 and second place is $40.00
The 2014 convention will again be held in Las
Vegas. While we have not yet committed to a hotel,
we have received favorable interest from the Tuscany, last year’s site. We will update you later on this.

new Facebook page, please do so and like us. This
will greatly increase our visibility.
Last but not certainly not least, we all need to
thank Guy Nishida for taking over as Chairman of
OTLS. This club does not run by itself. It needs a
leader and one who wants us to succeed. Guy has
always been a major contributor year after year. Besides his work as a board member, Guy has taken it
upon himself to always make arrangements for the
OTLS Golf Tournament and has donated much of the
awards and gifts.
Our Saturday night auction is an integral part
of the convention. Not only is it fun, but it is a major way to supplement our working capital to help
with the club’s expenses. This working capital will
be used this year for the software necessary to add
new applications to the website. A special thanks
to Zippo for their continued support of OTLS and
their tremendous donations. Year after year, Zippo
donates a special OTLS convention lighter, only 1
of 2 made. One in their archives and one for the
auction. Besides this great lighter, Zippo’s donations
span their entire product line.
Thank you to Ed and Ann Penedo, The Roseart
Company, The Studio, George Gordon, Takashi
and Kiyoko Fujii, Hiroshi Kohara and Zippo Station, Leo and Dot Turini, John Cornelius, and James
Hinde, for their generous donations.

hours if not more of your time? If not for value, build
the interest so that future generations will revere and
safeguard lighters as we do for the works of art and
historical artifacts that they are.
To that end, we are enhancing the website and
making it more interactive. Rob has an update in
this issue on our movement in that area. We have
freed-up some funds thru various measures and will
be paying for some programming upgrades.
Judith will be contacting former members with
a view to enticing them back into the club. We hope
that the enhancements we are making will generate
more interest for them and for prospective members,
many of them from the on-line and internet generation.
I am compelled to remind those of you who sell
on Ebay to print a copy of the introduction to the club

8TH ANNUAL OTLS
GOLF TOURNAMENT 2013 RESULTS
However, I bring up the topic of the next convention
because I want you to start thinking about a design
for the 2014 convention lighter. As mentioned in the
last Message, the Board decided that we should utilize the talent within our membership to design the
lighter. The winner will be awarded a club lighter
and a year’s membership.
It is with deep regret that we announce the resignation of John Cornelius from the Board. He served
with distinction and passion. At this time, there are
no plans to replace him.
Guy Nishida
This year we played at
the beautiful Ballantyne Golf
Course in Charlotte, NC.
Many of the tournament participants actually had the good
fortune to play two days. We
enjoyed stellar weather but
suffered the ignominy of exhibiting our sub-par, par-making skills. Needless to say, our
golf ball satchels were much
lighter when the hacking was done.
The course was exceptionally scenic but most
of us concentrated hopelessly on adjusting to the
speed of the green and spitting out sand after endless bunker shots. Occasionally, our ball found the
green stuff but it is more commonly known as rough.
Whenever our balls became too scuffed from striking trees and cart paths or too dirty from landing in
dirt or mud, we inadvertently hit them into ponds and
creeks and wished them a pleasant drowning.
Quite honestly, I hope I get the results listed accurately. The reason I may not is because they are
not all that important to me. I play to verbally abuse
my fellow contestants. While simultaneously exchanging insults and displaying comradeship seem
mutually exclusive, it is a feat our group has mastered to a “tee”.
This was the first year there was a tie for low
round. The score remained identical even after carrying the calculated total out to the decimal point.
Because of a tie-breaking rule, Don Berger was declared the winner and took home the 5 pound trophy
and it wasn’t a fish. Rather it was a crystal pedestal
surmounted with a crystal golf ball set on a marble
base. (Thank God for garage sales!) Tom Jones was
2nd, Guy Nishida was 3rd (using Richie’s hand-medowns no less), followed by Ron Eyerkuss, Dana
Baumgartner, and Richie Weinstein who cursed his
way around the course uttering among many gems,
the now eminently quotable “Your Mother’s Ass”.
However, in retrospect, I do believe this was intended as a compliment to mother’s everywhere.
Please consider joining us next year when we
will once again, eat, drink, curse, smoke, fart and
laugh our way around a golf course. Golf clubs are
optional.

WE WILL SUSPEND OUR NORMAL FORMAT
TO GIVE YOU THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM
THE 27ND ANNUAL CONVENTION.
As you know from the last newsletter, we ordered 3 Sterling Silver Lighters. We sold the first
one “1 of 3” on Friday morning. It went for $300.00
Everyone was very happy to see Mike McCaslin
back with us. He has had some health issues the past
couple of years and now is doing better.
OTLS 27TH ANNUAL CONVENTION
CHARLOTTE NC
This was the earliest we have ever had a convention. And it was great weather in Charlotte!
Wed. several members arrived and some even
got an early day of golf in on Wed. Nancy & Judith
got the Welcome Bags stuffed.
Wed. afternoon Judith met with the hotel people
to go over last minute arrangements for the convention. Although Judith is retiring from the Board of
OTLS, she agreed to do the convention this year.
June 1
We had several visitors on Sat. a lot of them saw
the ad on Craigslist that John Elster posted for us…
thanks John – great idea! One man sold some lighters to a few members and was very happy when he
left.
Don Ilko and John Elster are also members of
the Tobacco Club in Winston Salem. So both of
them had interesting and attractive displays on their
tables of tobacciana, as well as lighters.
May 31
Today was the first day of the Convention. The
Golfers were off early that morning to see who could
play the best golf. See more about that in this issue.
The Get Acquainted Party began at 4:30 in
the Atrium. Debbie Eyerkuss and Beverley Laird
worked the Registration Table, with Nancy Lloyd
passing out Welcome Bags and helping.
At this party, Judith officially announced she
was turning over the Chair of the Board to Guy
Nishida. She presented him with the official OTLS
Gavel to call the convention to order.
Toward the end of the registration Richard
Weinstein announced there would be a short auction.
Rich started the auction with some Zippo Clothes,
donated by Zippo. Rich & Guy had gone upstairs
earlier to get some of the auction items from Judith’s
room. So they just gathered up everything they saw.
At one point, Guy held up a green Zippo shirt – about
that time Judith turned around and said “That’s my
shirt!” But they auctioned it anyway!
Saturday Dinner & Auction
May 31
As you know, each year we honor a member who has shown an outstanding commitment to
the club by generously providing their time and/or
knowledge for the betterment of the club. Whether it
be for articles submitted, or behind the scenes assistance, the Founders Award is an acknowledgement
by the board that we recognize them and honor them
for their work. Guy Nishida presented the Founders
Award. The Award went to Judith Sanders, which
evidently was a big surprise to her. When she got up
to the microphone she was almost speechless, which
is unusual for Judith. We all know the commitment
As the dinner was beginning, Guy Nishida announced it was Judith’s Birthday and everyone sang
Happy Birthday. After that the hotel staff came out
with a huge cake with candles on it!
Then Guy thanked all the people who had helped
with the convention.
After dinner, Guy announced the Founders’
Award. See article in this issue.
Then came the auction, with our Head Auctioneer, Richard Weinstein beginning the event. We
want to thank all of our Auctioneers – Ron Eyerkuss,
George Gordon and John Elster. Rob Giarretta and
Ira Pilossof kept track of the sales. And Michael
Katz and Brian Feinsilber helped with the auction.
This was Brian’s first convention and he spent a lot
of time helping – thanks Brian!
FOUNDERS AWARD
This was the first day of the displays. There is
always utter chaos when everyone starts unpacking –
everyone wants to unpack but everyone also wants to
buy lighters. So everyone is running back and forth
between looking and unpacking. But it is all fun!
After everyone was in the room, Judith presented Guy with a gift to commemorate his new position.
She gave him a nice money clip with the OTLS logo
on it. Guy will have to use it now at every convention.

In the Spotlight
that Judith has given us for almost 30 years. It is
with great honor and affection that we give her this
award.
Brian Feinsilber………..
Interviewed by Art Brooks
A SPECIAL THANKS!
Brian’s occupation is in Petroleum Land management, or the leasing of
mineral rights. His work requires a lot of travel
so Brian uses his spare time during these travels
looking for lighters. He has been a lighter collector for the last 6 or 7 years and a Member of OTLS
for the last 4. Brian also collects Djembe or West
African drums, sterling silver turquoise jewelry and
political memorabilia.
Brian stays away from antique stores when it
comes to his lighter collecting as says the pricing is
usually not what he is willing to spend. Rather he
looks at Flea Markets and Ebay. He started collection lighters when he found 3 lighters for sale and
bought 2 and found out one of them was worth a lot
of money. He told me what went thru his mind was
“WHOA….SCHAZAM”. He said he saw a market
and an opportunity and has been hooked ever since.
He currently has approximately 500 lighters. His favorites are vintage, old unique ones. Currently he
favors Zippo, Korean War era. His father was a Korean War Veteran.
Brian attended his first show in Cleveland and
went there with a number of lighters. By then, he
believed he knew a lot about lighters and was ready
to share his vast knowledge at the show with other
sellers. Then he discovered and realized how much
he didn’t know. Quite a few people there realized
his inexperience and did not make fun of or take advantage of Brian, but rather mentored him. That is
a great experience Brian carries with himself and remembers. It is also one of the things he likes about
being a member of OTLS. People are willing to
share their knowledge and mentor folks like himself.
He also feels everyone is friendly and warm.
Brian has a great sense of humor. At the end
of this interview I asked him is there is anything
he would like to add about himself that no one else
would know, he said yes and very quickly added “Art
has given me the best interview I have had all year”.
If you have some Korean lighters you would like to
share or if you wish to communicate with Brian he
can be reached at [email protected]
To Zippo Manufacturing & Linda Meabon for
their continued support.
Thanks to our Sales Person at Zippo, Robin Pavone and all the people in the Art Dept. at Zippo for
our outstanding Convention Lighters. Each year we
submit a proposed design and each year, the Zippo
Team under Robin have made our design come to
life.
Everyone who helped with all the jobs at the
convention. A special Thanks to Nancy Lloyd for
serving as Convention Chairman in NC.
All the Auctioneers & Helpers at the auction
Now a few words from Judith!
When Guy Nishida started introducing the
Founders’ Award this year, one of the things he said
was “this woman hasn’t been a member for very
long”. So I started looking around the room to see
who he might be talking about. When he said my
name, I didn’t even recognize what he said until
Nancy Lloyd sitting next to me, said something. And
then I just sat there like I didn’t know what was going on.
When I got up to the podium I was so overwhelmed I couldn’t even think of anything to say
- now I know most of you will not believe I was
speechless! But I really was. And later I didn’t even
know if Guy handed me the award or Rich or who - I
was in daze!
But I would like to say a big THANK YOU to
the Board of Directors of OTLS for thinking of me
and giving me this honor. Serving all of you has
been my pleasure.
Respectfully submitted, Judith B. Sanders

My Latest Flame
by George Gynes
The “File Strikers” the Rodney Dangerfield “Get No Respect!” - of lighters
One of my favorite categories in my lighter collection is the popular Striker Lighters. They are arguably the most diversified style of lighters; they can
be found from simple pocket models to extremely
detailed table models and the most ornate Russian
Faberge pieces.
There is a sub-category of the Striker Lighters
that are lesser known: the File Strikers also known
as the “Rasp” lighters. Their system is the reverse
of the normal Striker; the flint is inserted in the
wand and the file steel is mounted on the body of
the lighter. Actually, they were here first. When Carl
Auer von Welsbach discovered and patented Ferro
Cerium (Flint) in 1903, the first devices using his
flint in them were File Strikers. The flint material
was not compact and round as they are today, in fact
it was sold in a block and a portion had to be cut for
use. Consequently, it lent itself to be used against
a stationary “File Steel”. However, it was not long
before the shape of the flint was tamed and made
more user friendly. The File Steel was made into a
circular shape (flint wheel) and the lighters started
to resemble the ones we know today. The Strikers
were also reinvented. It was very cumbersome to
maintain a flint in the stylus of a wand, just the right
length for friction sparking. It is much easier to have
a flint strip mounted in a receptacle on the body of
the lighter and have it struck by a pointed piece of
steel mounted in the wand. Thus, the striker lighters
started using this new configuration and continued to
be manufactured even to this date.
A few companies continued making/selling
the File Strikers: the Novitas Sales Company of
Waltham, Massachusetts is one of the better known.
Here are pictures of a couple of Novitas pieces: the
Wall Lighter is circa 1907 and the pocket lighter
is circa 1910. The other two lighters are unmarked,
however judging by the clothing on the Boy with the
Horn, it is a German piece. The Bull Striker is identical to another one I have with an advertisement for
the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition
held in San Francisco, California, so I presume it
was US made.
If anyone has more information on these forgotten “File Strikers”, please let me know.
Happy lighter hunting to all – George
