Director’s Welcome
SAMA-Altoona will be transformed into a 1930s speakeasy for this year’s The Art of
Wine and Fashion. Speakeasies were numerous and popular during the Prohibition
years. These were the depression years and money was scarce. Times were tough but
people did what they could to make their lives happy. Movies were hot, and parlor
games and board games were popular. People gathered around radios to listen to
Roosevelt’s fire-side chats and, of course, baseball. Young people danced to big band
music.
In the ‘30s, there was a clear difference between what was called a “blind pig” and
a “speakeasy.” The difference being that a blind pig was usually a low-class dive and
a speakeasy a typically higher-class establishment that offered food and entertainment.
Some speakeasies even required a coat and tie for men, and evening dress for women.
Tonight, patrons will be transported back in time to the era of the blues, gangsters,
bootlegging, flappers, tommy-guns, and the speakeasy.
There is a touch of class to The Art of Wine and Fashion’s journey back in time. This
is a very special event characterized by its panache, taste, and style. The Art of Wine
and Fashion creates a high level of energy and excitement. This is an event you will have
to experience to appreciate. This is an evening the community will be talking about
for many months. SAMA is pleased to bring this cultural experience to the community.
Over the years, The Art of Wine and Fashion has become one of the Museum’s most
successful fundraising events. This is a community event that many area residents
look forward to attending each year. Now in its ninth year, SAMA’s The Art of Wine and
Fashion is noted for its fashion, food, and festivities. Everybody has a great time.
This special evening requires the talents, effort and commitment of some very
special people. My sincere appreciation is extended to all of the individuals who
worked to make this program a memorable one for all in attendance. I offer a special
thank you to Peg DeLeo, who served as chair for this year’s event. Peg’s dedication to
task and attention to detail contributed immeasurably to our success. I sincerely
appreciate the hard work and effort of the Museum staff and especially Barbara
Hollander, who has worked tirelessly to make this an enjoyable program. We are
grateful to our many sponsors whose generosity and support make this event possible.
Finally, I thank the Director’s Circle, Museum Associates, Exhibition Patrons,
Education Patrons, and other donors who give generously to
help make our work at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of
Art possible.
The Museum welcomes this opportunity to bring you a
roaring good time with a touch of class. The funds raised
through The Art of Wine and Fashion are critical to SAMA
operations and programs. The support we receive from
tonight’s event helps to keep our doors open to the public
free of charge and fund our exhibitions and education
programs.

Chair’s Welcome
Welcome and thank you for attending The Art of Wine and Fashion. This
year marks the Museum’s ninth annual fashion show fundraiser. Over
the years, it has earned a reputation for being quite a party, and we
hope this year will be no different. I hope you find this night to be filled
with wonderful food, good wine, exquisite vintage fashions and great
friends.
It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as this event’s chair for the
last two years. I have been blessed to work with co-chair Jim Cayce, a
truly talented and dedicated individual. Our Altoona Museum
Coordinator, Barbara Hollander, has again gone above and beyond to
put together a truly magnificent affair. Her hard work and devotion is
matched only by her sense of humor and easy-going personality. My
duties as event chair have been considerably eased by having such an
active and energetic committee. I thank everyone who has been
involved with this event for their efforts in pulling together another
successful fundraiser.
On behalf of the entire committee, I would like to extend our sincere
appreciation to our patrons, sponsors, and donors for their
contributions and generosity. I am grateful to the community for their
continued support of The Art of Wine and Fashion and the Southern
Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona. Your assistance tonight and
throughout the year makes so much of a difference, from supporting
the Museum’s education programs to ensuring that all four of SAMA’s
sites remain open to the public free of charge.

This is Peg DeLeo’s second year as event
chair, and she has been as professional and capable in this endeavor as she is
in her own business and life. Co-chair Jim Cayce is our go-to man. If we need
something, he makes it happen. I wish him well in his new role as co-chair of
the Gala at SAMA-Loretto. I am honored to call Peg and Jim my friends as
well as colleagues.
I extend my thanks to las trés vintage wearables and the beautiful Montero
sisters for tackling this venture of producing the style show. Thanks to Bill
and Brooke Sell and Bold for their culinary style, to Sandra Halpern for her
professional photographic skills, and to Jeff Greenberg for tonight’s candid
shots.
Without the direction and support of our Executive Director, Gary Moyer, as
well as the entire Museum staff, all of whom have had a tremendous hand in
this event’s success, The Art of Wine and Fashion could not continue to be the
event that “everyone is talking about.”
And to the community, you are attentive and respectful at our Lunch a l’Art
programs, you rave about the exhibitions, and you are truly as much a part of
this Museum as any professional in the field. I am in awe of your enthusiasm.
