Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ;
The twelve days which are Christmas have come and gone, the gifts under the tree have
been opened and enjoyed, and now the decorations have been put away until we prepare to celebrate the coming
of the Christ child again next year. With all the seasonal hustle and bustle behind us it is appropriate that we take
a bit of time to reflect on all the blessings we have received.
We, the staff of your congregation, have had a bit of time to catch our breath since Christmas too. As we reflect
back on all that has happened in the past six weeks or so we find ourselves overwhelmingly thankful for all that
you, the members of the church have done for us.
We are very appreciative of the “staff gifts” that you offered us this year. Your gifts fill our hearts with joy and are
applied to many of the practical needs we all have in our family lives. These gifts mean all-the-more to us because
we realize that you too have many demands on your time and resources at Christmastime. Therefore, it is very
humbling for us to know that you have given so much to each of us. Thank you.
It is also time to express our thanks for all the other things you do for your church’s staff all through the year.
You offer us kind words as you pass through our offices. You send us greeting cards when we are under the
weather or when we celebrate a birthday. You offer your help to us when we are shorthanded or when special
projects arise. You speak well of us among your small groups and Bible studies. And sometimes, without a word,
you pat us on the back, shake our hand, or give us a hug. In short, you show us your love. Again, thank you.
Finally, we thank you for your prayers. We feel the power of your prayers as we go about our daily activities at
the church and at home and we see how your prayers affect our lives. We suffer illnesses, we have bad days, and
things go wrong with in our homes and the power of your prayer sustains us. Thank you more than we can
express.
As a staff we wish to share with you a paraphrase of the prayerful words first offered by the Apostle Paul to his
beloved church in Philippi.
We thank our God every time we remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of our
prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. We are
confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by
the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for us to think this way about all of you, because you hold us in
your heart, for all of you share in God’s grace with us … in the defense and confirmation of the
gospel. … And this is our prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge
and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure
and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for
the glory and praise of God.
Grace to you all and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Yours in Christ,
Pr. Mark, Jan, Julie, Michelle, Sheryl, Pr. Boone, John, and Chris

E VA N G E L I S M
I read this daily devotion this week and was so touched; I thought I would
share it with you.
“I’ve heard people say, I sure would like to be in a Christian company, and be
surrounded by Christians. The only time I hear God’s name mentioned
where I work now is when people are cursing. And you just cannot believe
the obscene jokes, gossip, greed, back-stabbing, throat-cutting, and all of the
materialism! Oh! If God would only get me out of this place so I could serve
Him!
Share the Good News
Do you know how I would respond? I would tell them, God put you in that place so you could serve Him. We
are to let our light shine in every place where God has places us! Matthew 5:14-16 says, ‘Ye are the light of the
world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a
candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your god
works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.’
Your job is the lampstand that God has ordained where you let your light shine! You have been saved out of the
world and then sent back into the world to witness to the world, and that’s the only business in the world you
have in the world, till you’re taken out of the world! Let me give you three rules for witnessing to those with
whom you work:
* Don’t brag. The Bible says let your light shine. It doesn’t say make it shine. Your light is to glow, not
glare. Also, people are to see the light, not the source of the light. If you go to work with an air of
self-righteousness, you’re going to make your co-workers sick and not want to even be around you.
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 says, ‘It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us
wisdom from God — that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: ‘Let
him who boasts boast in the Lord.’
* Don’t nag. If you’re always thumping a Bible or nagging somebody when he gambles, smokes, or curses,
you’re not going to win that person to Christ. You may think that you’re doing a good job, but that
person is not going to take a step closer to Jesus Christ through that kind of witness. You see, his
behavior is not his problem. You would be just like that person if you didn’t know the Lord Jesus Christ.
He needs Jesus Christ. So, let’s see how we are to respond from Colossians 4:5-6, ‘Walk in wisdom
toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with
salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.’
* Don’t sag. I want to tell you something about those people with whom you work. Most of them are not
all that interested in going to heave or hell. They just want to know how to hack it on Monday. And when
they see you come in the office without a hangover and with the joy of the Lord Jesus on your face, they’re
going to ask you, ‘What makes you so happy?’ And at that
moment, you’re going to be able to share the Lord Jesus with him
because you will have sanctified the Lord God in your heart. 1
Peter 3:15 says, ‘But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be
ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a
reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.’”

on all those who are married. You are invited to bring a wedding photo or two to
display that day as we celebrate together. A table will be set up to place

We g e t b y w i t h a l i t t l e h e l p
from our friends.
This month we move into Lent. What does that mean — not what is the definition,
but what does that mean we are supposed to do? Eat hot crossed buns? Give up
something? Become ascetics? Spend hours in reflection? Any or all of those are good in
moderation. I love hot crossed buns, but too many equals unwanted pounds. Last year I gave up
wine for Lent, which meant I drank more bourbon. Not much benefit there. I’d be an abject failure
as an ascetic, but some reflection on what is important in life would do me good.
Maybe Lent should be dawn, no darkness, fuller not lesser. A beginning. After all, it leads us to
Easter, which is a Christian’s reason for being. Kristin Berkey Abbott suggests we adopt a discipline.
Take up something. (See her article on the ELCA website). Hers is about writing poetry. What
could ours be about? How about we try giving ourselves to others? For example:







Seek the lonely.
Love the unlovable.
Welcome the stranger.
Care for the sick.
Feed the hungry and find a cup of cold water for the thirsty.
Offer our abundance to those in need of clothing.
And help the imprisoned because imprisoned can mean more than jail.
You see, all the above are right there in front of us, sitting next to us in church, living near us in our
community, sharing our space and our lives. But we don’t even recognize them. Let’s all try paying
attention, noticing them, walking a mile in their shoes. Step out of our comfort zone. Because they
are us, and we are them. We all have our baggage. And we all have something to give. Jesus
commanded us to do this and who are we to say we are too busy?
7
But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’; for to all to whom I send you, you
shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. Jeremiah 1:7 (NRSV)
OUTREACH
The Outreach Team is pleased to announce that we
are sponsoring one youth from the ELCJHL to
attend the Gathering in Detroit this coming up July.
We are looking forward to a great experience for
our youth group to get to know someone from a
different culture and to hear about the Christian
experience in a different part of the world.

Stephen Ministry
Congratulations, if you are reading this you made it into the New Year! It’s 2015, a decade
and a half into the new century, wow! On a lighter note, many of us may still be immersed
in football. We have a new college National Champion, the Ohio State Buckeyes. Pastor
Hoke is, no doubt, ecstatic! He loves Ohio State anything! I could almost see a great big
smile on his face as the Bucks beat the Ducks of Oregon. But Pastor Hoke showed his love
around our church in more ways than one. He guided our Stephen Ministry Program from inception and taught
many of us a new way of spreading Christ’s love.
Like a winning football program, Stephen Ministry’s success didn’t come overnight. A lot of folks at Beautiful Savior
have spent a lot of time learning, and serving. Learning how to listen and be supportive … learning how their time
and effort can make a tremendous and positive difference in the lives of those who could use a kind word, or an understanding smile. Little stuff, that’s really not so little when the need is there!
There’s a class for new Stephen Ministers currently being taught in our church. They’re going over the game plans
now, and soon we’ll have four more new caregivers joining our team! There’s a growing need for them. So a big
“thank you” to those who’ve volunteered to join our ranks and to those who’ve been involved in teaching them!
They will certainly hit the ground running.
In case you’re wondering — a Stephen Minister is trained to be a caring listener and spiritual helper. If you need us,
we’d love to be there for you, as Christ would want us to be.
And—if this sounds like a calling for you, we’d love you to join us!!! Need a Christian friend to talk to? That would
be a Stephen Minister! Learn more! Contact: Pastor Mark Behenna, Chuck Funk or Connie McKee.

EVENTS TO WATCH FOR
A Faith5 “Crash Course” Sunday, February 8, 12:30-2:00 p.m. Join a
group of folks from the congregation to learn and practice this helpful devotional method. Great for
couples, families with teens, and families with small children—learn how to get your family talking about
God! What might our congregation look like if we had families praying and reading scripture every night
in every home? Come be a part of it! RSVP to Michelle Ketepa in the office or sign up on the bulletin
board. Lunch and childcare available.
Family Faith5 Huddles Coming in mid-march, volunteers will host small group conversations for those
who have read Holding Your Family Together and are practicing Faith5. Come share insights with each
other, get encouragement, share ideas with one another for making the process work with your own
family, and get to know other families in the congregation. Sign up sheets will be available soon. If you are
willing to host one of these gatherings, please contact Michelle in the church office.

Children ages 2-5 are invited to participate in Wiggle Worship every first, third, and
fifth Sunday of the month! Wiggle Worship allows children to attend a portion of the
worship service with their families to begin learning about being a part of the faith
community. Following the children’s message, our little wigglers are excused to ageappropriate activities—games, songs, a story, or a craft. Children return to worship
following the offering. Help is still needed. Contact Margie Turowski to volunteer.
The youth will be sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast on Sunday,
March 15! Come enjoy a short stack (green or regular) and
some fellowship time with your church family! Brunch will be served
from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in order to allow everyone to
attend worship and Sunday School as you normally do!
A free-will donation will be accepted for this event. For more
information, to donate food/supplies, or to volunteer your help contact
Hollie Arnold.
INVEST IN OUR YOUTH!
The ELCA Youth Gathering offers our young people an opportunity to
serve together, learn, experience powerful worship, and get a glimpse of
t h e l a r g e r c h ur c h wi t h 3 0, 00 0 + o t he r L ut he r a ns .
In order to raise funds for this experience, we are asking for your
donations. On the bulletin board in the welcome center you can
find envelopes numbered from $1 through $150. You can make a
donation equal to (or more than) the amount written on the envelope.
Place the envelope in the offering plate or return it to Michelle Ketepa in
the church office. If all of these envelopes are filled, we will have raised all we need for the
Gathering in July!
The benefits of fundraising this way:
1.) The youth will not need to come asking the congregation for money with several other events
through the year.
2.) Unlike fundraisers where you receive a meal, an item, or a service in exchange for your gift, all funds
from this project are tax deductible and can be reported on your church giving report.
3.) The youth will have more time to prepare for the Gathering through team building and Bible study.
4.) Any other fundraisers done through the year can help send kids to camp, benefit local benevolence, or
be given as an offering to Gathering projects.
Make an investment in our youth today that will pay off as our youth grow in faith and
leadership!
