U.S. Cellular Center
Information
The U.S. Cellular Center is Western North Carolina’s preeminent multi-purpose event facility and is managed by the City of Asheville. The
facility first opened to the public in 1974 and has since hosted thousands of concerts, sporting events, trade and consumer shows,
graduations, speeches and other types of events over the years. The U.S. Cellular Center primarily consists of four venues and has the
ability to host a variety of events. The ExploreAsheville.com Arena with seating for 7,200, the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium with seating for
2,431, the Exhibit Hall with capacity for up to 1,500 and the Banquet Hall with capacity for up to 500 (Depending on Set Up).
In recent years the U.S. Cellular Center has acquired a solid reputation as a quality venue that hosts events in an appealing destination with
appreciative fans. Leveraging the burgeoning reputation of Asheville as a center of creativity and the awareness of the city as a great place
to live and visit, the U.S. Cellular Center hosts sold-out shows by a diverse range of artists. With over 200 days of events and drawing well
over 200,000 people annually the facility serves as a major economic engine supporting the vitality of the region as a whole and vibrant
downtown Asheville in particular.
With support from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority and additional proceeds from a naming rights agreement with
U.S. Cellular the City of Asheville began executing a master plan of improvements to the facility in 2010. These renovations provided new
lower bowl seating in the arena, upgraded concourse and concessions areas, updates to restrooms, the lobby & ticket office areas, meeting
rooms, Banquet Hall and added club level amenities. Refurbished upper bowl seating, new scoreboards and electronic displays as well as
sound and lighting updates are also on the list of improvements.
Thanks in large part to the renovations and community support the facility hosted the return of the Southern Conference Basketball
Tournament in 2012. Asheville was host to the tournament from 1984 through 1995 and is very proud to have this prestigious and exciting
event call its current home the newly remodeled ExploreAsheville.com Arena.
With these renovations the U.S. Cellular Center seeks to remain a vital component in the destination experience with events often being a
primary motivator for people to visit Asheville. Drawing out of town visitors and locals alike, the updated facility can host events for years to
come.
