Life in Queenstown often feels like life in a bubble. Free from many of the
world’s worries. A resort town, a party town, a rich man’s playground. A town
fit for the Queen of England no less. Our schools are decile 10 and our ‘low’
socioeconomic developments are half million dollar dream houses with $1.5 million
dollar views.
Where is our crime? Our poverty, our hungry children, our drug problems and
homeless people? These everyday problems in the real world are either swept so
far under the carpet here in the Wakatipu nobody can see it, or we are the only
town in the world that really is the picture perfect reality the image projects.
So what do you believe? The carpet sweep theory or the non-existence of such
problems in our community? I hate to be put in the position of having to concede
my beloved region is not perfect, but when confronted with the question does
family violence occur here, how can I believe in the impossible dream and pretend
it does not.
One of the most difficult social problems for our society to accept and deal with is
family violence. The scale of our social problems might be small in comparison to
other parts of New Zealand, but problems we do have. The unfortunate reality is we
are not immune to such behaviour here. Mostly hidden behind closed doors, family
violence smoulders away destroying lives. It happens in the warm comfortable
two million dollar mansions and the cold damp rental units. It even happens in our
hotels, bars and takeaway joints. It seems not even a family holiday can save some
children and spouses from feeling the rage of an abusive family member.

In most cases the abuser is a man. But rather than feel guilty and apologise on
behalf of the male sex like David Cunliffe, the innocent or reformed man should
remember to be a man, recognising the issue exists and take a stand against
family violence. Sweeping it under the carpet might have been the kiwi bloke’s way
of dealing with such issues in the past, but times have changed and now the manly
thing to do is join the fight against family violence not pretend it does not exist.
This Friday (21 November) the White Ribbon Ride comes to town supporting our
community in its quest to be violence free. Raising the profile of family violence
is an important part of the process. Jigsaw Central Lakes is an organisation
supporting people affected by family violence in our region. They are hosting a
men’s breakfast, sponsored by Crowe Horwath at the Frankton Ale House on
Friday 7am-9am. Come along and enjoy a hearty breakfast and help raise the
profile of this worthy cause.

Work trials.... free labour more like!
What a load of crap work trials are for some
businesses in this town, how many people have
done a full day trial with not even a mouth full of
grub to say thanks? I certainly did... no choice
in the matter if you want a job! The amount
of people who have told me that certain
businesses are constantly ‘trialing’ people for
a job that ends up being none existant after
they’ve used FREE LABOUR to cover a busy
period is ridiculous think its time we named
and shamed, changed things so that a couple
of hours is sufficient and got payed, about
time they stopped getting away with all these
‘trials’... trials my arse! pay up free loaders!

Comment on the Editorial “Killing our Customers ”
Your editorial incorrectly accuses the Tourism
Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) of
brushing off deaths caused by foreign drivers. You
cite my Radio New Zealand interview where I
pointed out that the percentage of fatalities involving
visitors on New Zealand roads is less than 3%. I
mentioned these statistics to provide context to
a broader interview, which mostly focused on the
efforts being made by the tourism industry to improve
road safety for visiting drivers and New Zealanders.
As the only Association representing all sectors of
New Zealand’s large and diverse tourism industry,
TIA is playing an active role. Working with car and
campervan rental operators, we recently led the
development of best practice guidelines for rental
vehicle operators to help educate international
visitors on driver safety. These voluntary guidelines
reflect industry good practice for communicating
with visiting drivers at three key stages of their trip
- when they book, when they arrive to check out
their rental vehicle and during their journey around
New Zealand. This ranges from providing links to
road safety videos and travel distance calculators, to
encouraging drivers coming off long-haul flights to
rest overnight before picking up their vehicle, and
recommending they use GPS tour guides during the
journey that broadcast regular safety messages. The
guidelines can be adapted by other organisations
that come into contact with visiting drivers, including
travel wholesalers, visiting information centres, visitor
activities and attractions, international education
providers and second-hand car dealers. TIA is
now working with representatives from the motel,
holidaypark and hotel sectors to develop a toolkit
of messages and information that accommodation
providers can use to help educate their international
guests about driver safety. We are also part of a NZ
Transport Agency Safer Journeys project in the lower
South Island to improve road safety outcomes. Due
to high visitor numbers, combined with challenging
roads and road conditions, the lower South Island
has a higher percentage of overseas drivers involved
in road crashes than the national average. Changing
visitor behaviour is just part of the solution to reducing
the number of crashes involving foreign drivers. The
NZTA project is looking at making every part of our
transport system safer - vehicles, roads and roadsides,
speeds and road users. No matter what the cause,
every crash on our roads where someone is killed
or badly injured is a tragedy. There is a duty of care

Queenstown last week demonstrates. Would you
like to meet this guy on Gorge Road with your wife
beside you and three children in the back? I’m sure
you can understand the anxiety we feel down here.
Thank you for your response clarifying the position
of the Tourism Industry Association. This is a very
important issue facing a tourism hotspot like the
Queenstown Lakes. It is encouraging to hear the
TIA is being proactive. Your final comment that there
is a duty of care for everyone that comes into contact
with visiting drivers sums it up. That is all we ask of
rental car companies.
However too many plainly incapable drivers still
get given rental car keys as this photo taken in

We are looking for a Cellar Door Host to join our busy team,
with full-time fixed term or part-time hours negotiable for the
right candidate.
Southern Institute of Technology’s Queenstown Campus, situated in the
Remarkables Park Precinct, is looking for an appropriately qualified and
experienced person to teach the above paper within the Diploma in Human
Resource Management in Semester One 2015. This paper is scheduled to be
taught on Friday mornings, commencing February and continuing until July.
Teaching experience and/or experience delivering training programmes would
be advantageous.
