The Alberni Valley is widely recognized as being
the salmon capital of the world and a thriving
fishing community. Salmon fishing is an essential
part of our economy and has developed significantly
over the past 20 years. Tourists continue to visit
yearly to get a glimpse of the salmon spawning up
Stamp River. In 2010 the city was awarded the
World Fishing Network’s coveted “Ultimate Fishing
Town” designation.
There’s a ton of opportunity for fresh and salt water
fishing around the Valley, both as a solo endeavor or
a toured experience.
The Port Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound provide
anglers with immense opportunity to catch various
types of salmon, halibut, cod, crab or prawns
throughout the year. Travelling down the inlet to
surrounding salt waters of the Barkley Sound,
fishermen will find plenty of fish to take home.
Summer fishing in the Barkley Sound occurs from
late May to early September and the broad amount
of bait fish in the area during these months tempt
salmon to feed and rest before continuing their
journey. For boat access to the Alberni Inlet, the
Clutesi Haven Marina, situated on the tidal fresh
waters of the Somass River, has a four-lane launch
ramp, large parking area and fish-cleaning stations.
Port Alberni’s Stamp River has the most consistent
salmon and steelhead fishery in British Columbia.

On average, close to 30,000 coho and chinook
return to the Stamp River each year. June and July
are best for sockeye fishing in the Stamp and a
wonderful time to be down by the river, watching
the fish swim through the low, clear water. The best
time for steelhead fishing is between November and
March but does continue to run both in winter and
summer. Chinook and coho salmon fishing is prime
in September and October.
Guided fishing tours and charters are available in
the Alberni Valley and are a great way to ensure the
best fishing possible by experienced and proficient
guides.
Sproat and Great Central are two spawning lakes in
the Alberni Valley that provide anglers with fishing
all year round. Fishing in these freshwater lakes
is permitted as per provincial and federal fishing
regulations and both provide easily accessible boat
launches.
The Robertson Creek Fish Hatchery is the most
successful coho and chinook salmon enhancement
facility on Vancouver Island. The hatchery, just
a short drive west of Port Alberni, is open to
the public year round for self-guided tours and
provides engaging signs with information on the
hatchery’s activities.

Sproat Lake

Experience endless options for fresh water fun
when you visit Sproat Lake, a popular summer
recreational area for Port Alberni locals and
tourists alike. Sproat Lake is a must-see destination
for anyone traveling to Port Alberni. The lake is more
than 25 km in length and has more than 300 km
of shoreline with plenty of public access areas to
lay out your towel in the sun or take a dip into the
refreshing water.
Located just 15 minutes west from the City of Port
Alberni, Sproat Lake is a great place for aquatic
adventure seekers to enjoy a variety of fresh water
sports like tubing, windsurfing, wakeboarding and
stand-up paddle boarding. Explore the many arms
and take in the beautiful sights of the lake by boat,
canoe or kayak. The lake is fairly calm in the summer
months but some areas can become windy and
rough at certain times of the day so use precaution
when navigating around the lake.
For the beach bums looking to relax next to the
sparkling water, have a picnic or throw around a
Frisbee, the provincial park has a great day-use area
to do so. With a large grassy area, picnic tables,
washrooms and clean drinking water the park is a
popular sunny day hangout.
A 500m trail starting from the main parking lot
at the day-use area will lead you along the lake
to the east end of the park where you will see a
small dock. Here visitors can check out prehistoric
petroglyphs, named K’ak’awin, that are considered
some of the finest panels in British Columbia. There
is little known about the petroglyphs but rumour has
it the ancient rock carvings illustrate a sea creature,
Although Sproat Lake is a beautiful destination
to visit any time of the year the summer months
bring more opportunity for water activities and
interpretive programs. Accompany a park naturalist
for an environmental education program every
Saturday throughout the summer months or join in
on a guided hike through the park. There are both
children’s programs and group programs offered
throughout the summer.
An upper and lower campground is available at two
separate parks for those wanting to spend more
than just an afternoon by the water.
Just west of the park entrance, there are
accommodations, a pub/restaurant, store and liquor
store at Sproat Lake Landing.

Canal Beach & Alberni Inlet
Life’s a beach! Walk along the driftwood lined shore,
feel the sand between your toes, throw around a
Frisbee, or explore the salty harbour waters on a
paddleboard or kayak. Canal Beach is a new and
vibrant addition to Port Alberni’s recreational
waterfront facilities and is a wonderful place for a
relaxing and fun day at the beach.
Located at the South end of Port Alberni, Canal Beach
is the perfect spot for windsurfing, kite boarding and
stand up paddle boarding on a calm ocean surface
with a stunning backdrop of the Alberni Inlet. Canal
Beach has a large green space and picnic tables
for the perfect afternoon lunch spot or for catching
the last bit of light as the sun retires behind the
mountains. ■

Harbour Quay
Some come to inhale the crisp salty air or the
impressive selection of eclectic artisan creations,
others simply come for the best donuts on Vancouver
Island. Either way you won’t be disappointed when
you visit the charming Harbour Quay waterfront
area in Downtown Port Alberni. Indulge in the many
scrumptious edible delights you can find at this
waterfront hub and make a wish while you throw a
coin into the rock-carved salmon water fountain
located in the centre area of the Quay.
Harbour Quay is a working waterfront space that
is plotted along the Alberni Inlet with a large dock
and boardwalks that offer unforgettable wildlife and
ocean viewing.
Throughout the Quay you will find handfuls of diverse
small businesses offering hand-crafted chocolates
and fudges, ice cream, fresh soups, seafood and
sandwiches. Satisfy your craving for fresh West Coast
seafood while relaxing on the waterfront patio at the
Starboard Grill restaurant.
After lunch, walk along the boardwalk while taking in
sensational views of the lush tree-lined mountains,
marine life and working fishing boats. For a more
birdlike view climb to the top of the tall red clock
tower for pristine views of the Alberni Inlet. In the
park area of the Quay there is a nautical-themed
playground that will surely keep any young angler
feeling like a real captain at sea. Also a treat for the
kids, a new aquarium with interactive displays of local
sea life and touch tanks is scheduled to open in May.

Victoria Quay
Another popular waterfront area is the Victoria
Quay at the foot of Johnston Road. A wooden
boardwalk leads you along the edge of the Somass
River, where you’ll enjoy pleasant views of the inlet
and surrounding forests. It is not uncommon that
you will spot a black bear searching for food across
the river in the Somass Estuary. The best time to
catch a glimpse of these big mammals is during the
months of August, September and October when
they are searching for returning Chinook salmon.
Two large wooden statues, carved by the Hupacasath
First Nations people, stand tall to greet you at
the entrance to Victoria Quay. A welcome centre
displays a First Nations Whaling Monument and
offers information on the history of the First Nations
people in the region. The park is lined with a grassy
area, picnic tables and is a great place to catch the
sunset as the day winds down.
A retail area across from the waterfront offers,
quaint cafes, gift shops, and hair salon. During
the summer months the Sunset Market sets up on
Wednesdays along the Quay, with vendors displaying
handmade crafts and edibles. ■

Kitsuksis Trail
The Kitsuksis Dyke trail offers an easy 3 km
paved walking, running or biking path that loops
around Kitsuksis Creek. The dike was originally
built to protect residential areas after the Alberni
Valley was hit by tsunamis in 1964.
The path is wheelchair accessible, pet-friendly and
perfect for a family outing. Adjacent to the path are
sports fields, picnic tables, benches, washrooms
and a playground equipped with a water park, perfect
for the Valley’s warm summer temperatures.
Keep an eye out for black-tailed deer that frequent
the lush second-growth forested areas of the trail,
rabbits, and a variety of birds both in the water and
in the trees.
»
Log Train Trail
Dating back to the early 1900’s the Log Train Trail
was originally constructed as a railway line to
service the Bainbridge Mill. A hundred years later,
it has been converted to a multi-use trail.
The Log Train Trail stretches 25 km along the foot
of the Beaufort Range and is rich with countless tall
second-growth forest. Walk, bike, run, or horseback
through the lush forested trails with easy access
points throughout the Valley.
For cyclists looking for an easy-going route the trail
access at the McLean Mill National Historic Site
is a great place to begin your ride. For those on
foot, both the Mozart Road access point, and the
entrance along Highway 4, at Coombs Country Candy
or east of the hospital, are easily accessible.
»
Roger Creek Nature Trail
Make sure to pack your camera when trekking
through The Roger Creek Nature Trail. This scenic
all-seasons hiking trail follows Roger Creek, through
an enchanting forested terrain, to a deep pool, often
used as a swimming hole on hot Alberni afternoons.
Rigid shale cliffs can be spotted from across the

creek and the trail is lined with an abundance of old,
second-growth cedars and is home to a large tree,
dubbed the Roger Creek Giant.
»
Alber ni Inlet Trail
The Alberni Inlet Trail is a wonderful way to
experience beautiful views of the City of Port
Alberni and the serene Alberni Inlet while trekking
through enchanted, moss-covered forests. This
trail lies on a privately-owned working forest and
was host to the mining industry in the 19th century.
There are various routes and forks along the trail,
all leading to viewpoints and past flowing rivers and
boggy swamps. Signs along the trail provide maps of
where you are and where the available routes lead.
The distance from the parking lot, located at Ship
Creek Rd, to a panoramic view of the City and Mt.
Arrowsmith is about 2 km and about 6 km to a rocky
beach area along the Inlet.
This is a moderate-level hike with many inclines
and declines. The well-maintained path is easy
to navigate along. Large rocky bluffs above the
shoreline of the working inlet offer a great place
to rest with some water and a snack as enjoy the
stunning views.

winds alongside the river for most of its length.
Many hikers park a vehicle at each end of the trail
and finish the day with a picnic at the south end.
»
Della Falls
The Alberni Valley is home to the tallest water
falls in Canada, Della Falls. Located in Strathcona
Provincial Park, about 60 km from the City of Port
Alberni, the only way to reach the falls is by crossing
Great Central Lake by boat. A base camp is available
for those who plan to make the 15 km ascent to
the base of Della Falls. Additional campsites are
available along the trail and at the base of the
falls. The forested trail leads journeyers along an
old log railway that takes about 7 hours one way
and is recommended for intermediate hikers with
backcountry gear and experience. ■

Stamp River Provincial Park is a wondrous
combination of short scenic hiking trails, that
provide ample opportunity to view salmon jumping
and swimming up the river to their spawning beds.
Lookout points along the river offer panoramic
views of the falls and the man-made fish ladders.
The annual salmon run begins in late August with
sockeye and carries on with coho and chinook into
December. Black bears are commonly tempted by
the heavy flow of salmon during the run and will
often head down to the river in hopes of an easy
meal. Take necessary safety precautions when in
the wilderness.
A longer hike, about 7.5 km, runs from the north
access of the park off Barker Road to the south
access parking lot of Beaver Creek road. The trail

McLean Mill
NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
Take a walk through histor y when you visit the
McLean Mill National Historic Site in the Beaver
Creek area of Por t Alberni. The McLean sawmill
was opened and operated by R.B. McLean and
his three sons from 1926 to 1965 and is the only
commercial steam-operated sawmill in Canada.
The mill was recognized as a National Historic Site
of Canada in 1989 to commemorate the history of
logging and saw milling in British Columbia.
Learn interesting facts about the mill’s history and
operations with an interactive guided tour of the
site by the entertaining “Tin Pants Theatre” troupe.
You will see restored logging equipment, including a
steam donkey, logging trucks, graders, lumber cars
and historic buildings, all the while hearing stories
from historic characters. Observe the sights and
sounds of steam as the sawmill cuts lumber for
demonstration and sale.
The sawmill has been rebuilt to operate as it did in
1965, including a replica of a 1928 log carriage. The
camp buildings are in the process of been restored

and furnished as they were at particular times in
their history. The site offers a complete collection of
industrial and personal memories of the people that
lived and worked there.
After the adventure grab a light lunch or something

No. 7 Steam Train
All aboard! If you’re not driving or cycling to the
McLean Mill National Historic Site yourself, why not
roll through the City of Port Alberni and surrounding
forests aboard a historic steam train pulled by
a completely restored 1929 Baldwin ex-logging
locomotive. You can hop on the No. 7 Steam Train
at the 1912 CPR Station, located at the bottom
of Argyle Street near the Harbour Quay, and travel
to the mill. Traveling to and from the mill is about
a 35-minute ride each way where you are free to
engage with the engineer and firemen before and
after the trip.
Riding the steam train will give you a historic and
unique view on railroading of yesteryear. Be careful
though; the Beaufort Gang has been seen in the
area and has been known to rob the train. Check
out their calendar of events for the dates of the big
payroll shipments to the mill.

The small towns are located on either end of a
peninsula that stretches north to south along the
West Coast. Legendary swells make the beaches a
surfer’s paradise.
It’s about an hour and a half drive along Highway 4
to the junction where going left takes you to Ucluelet
with its shops, fishing docks and touch tank aquarium
at the waterfront. Turn right and you will drive through
Pacific Rim National Park and onto Tofino. In the park,
stop to walk the incredible expanses of beaches, or
visit the museum at Wickaninnish. In Tofino enjoy
whale watching, shopping, fine restaurants and
nearby surfing.

Bamfield
Get off land and out to sea aboard the Frances
Barkley, a passenger freight service that makes
daily, and overnight trips to Bamfield, a small
coastal fishing town West of Port Alberni.
While sailing down the Alberni Inlet you will observe
an array of marine life. Eagles swooping for fish or
resting atop a tree on the shoreline, barking seals
sun tanning on the rocks and black bears on the
beach searching for snacks. An on-board café offers
breakfast lunch and dinner and a small variety of
beer and wine.
Bamfield is located in the heart of the Pacific Rim
National Park, about 89 km southwest of Port
Alberni. The small West Coast town is popular
for ocean kayaking, sport fishing and spending
time on beautiful sandy beaches. Things to do in
Bamfield include whale watching, diving, storm
watching, wildlife viewing, strolling along the scenic
boardwalk, hiking and checking out the Bamfield
Marine Sciences Centre. A water taxi is available to
take you across the inlet so you can see for yourself
all the natural wonders Bamfield has to offer. ■

Known to many as the home of the goats on the
roof, the Old Country Market in Coombs is a hub
for far more than just the four-legged ‘employees.’
Located about 30 minutes from Port Alberni along
the Alberni Highway in the small town of Coombs,
the market attracts thousands of people each year
for a glimpse of the roof-top grazers. The market is
famous for their variety of international foods, baked
goods, imported gifts and their large assortment of
ice cream. There are several shops surrounding the
market with unique souvenirs, books, fresh produce,
funky clothing and collectables. Also nearby are
Butterfly World, a parrot refuge and a farm that
offers tours and activities for families.

The Somass Estuary
The Somass Estuary is the top birding spot in the
Alberni Valley and is one of the most important
sites on Vancouver Island for the wintering and
migratory waterfowl. Located along the Somass
River, the Estuary can be accessed by road and
trails. There are more than 200 plant species living
in this riparian wetland and you can spot treasures
here during any season of the year. Winter is the
time to visit the estuary when looking for water birds,
spring is perfect for viewing beautiful blossoming
flowers and autumn for the pink salmon. More than
100 species of birds use this area for wintering,
staging, feeding or resting including Trumpeter Swan
and Great Blue Heron. Bald eagles and the Great
Horned Owl are also known to frequent the area.
Mammals have also been known to roam the
estuary. Columbian black-tailed deer, black bears,
beavers, mink, red Squirrels, raccoons, shrews, deer
mice, muskrats, River otters and bats have all been
observed here.
»
The Kitsuksis Dyke
Another great spot for bird watching in the Valley is
the Kitsuksis Dyke. Located across from the Clutesi
Haven Marina, the Kitsuksis Creek flows into the
Somass River and is a popular spot for a variety
of sparrows, towhees, juncos and a resident merlin.
Green Herons can be found here in the summer,
ring-necked ducks in the winter and warblers in the
spring. Deer, rabbits, and beaver have been spotted
along the paved three kilometre pathway.
The McCoy Lake area, Stamp River Provincial Park,
Fossli Provincial Park and the Taylor River Estuary
are also among some of the best places in the
Valley to go for bird and wildlife viewing. Varieties of
woodpeckers, ducks, loons and warbling are among
the many species of birds you can spot when you
explore the rich and diverse forests and trails on
the West Coast.
»
Victoria Quay
In the late summer visiting Victoria Quay is your best
chance to spot a black bear searching for salmon
in the Somass River. Don’t forget your camera and
binoculars for an unforgettable view across the river
of these majestic mammals. Vancouver Island is
home to thousands of black bears and can often be
spotted resting in the sun or searching for food along
the riverside or in the bushes along the highway.
Although the bears are an unforgettable sight and
can make awesome pictures, viewing from a safe
distance is key while observing these beauties. Be
respectful of the bears and never approach them,
especially the cubs. Never attempt to feed the bears
and make your presence known in their company by
yelling, clapping or singing loudly. ■

First Nation cultures are deeply ingrained and
celebrated throughout the Alberni Valley. The city’s
boundary lies within the traditional territories of
the Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nations, who
both have deep-seated involvement in the area’s
current affairs and economic development as well as
established communities on reserve lands adjacent
to the city.
Many place names in Port Alberni are derived from
a Nuu-chah-nulth origin, like Somass, Kitsuksis, and
Nootka.
Ancient petroglyph carvings can be found at Sproat
Lake Provincial Park that are believed to have been
carved by ancestors of the Nootka people.
An extensive collection of first nation artefacts and
information about the Valley’s first peoples is on
display at the Alberni Valley Museum.

traditional territory on Central Vancouver Island for
thousands of years and are known as the most inland

end of the Alberni Inlet, Sproat Lake, Great Central
Lake and the settled part of the Alberni Valley.
The Hupacasath welcomes visitors to the region
with traditional welcome figures at the waterfront at
Victoria Quay. A traditional whaling canoe carving is
also on display.

The Tseshaht
The Tseshaht First Nation is one of the 14 Nations
that make up the Nuu-chah-nulth people of western
Vancouver Island. Tseshaht means “the people of
Ts’ishaa,” which is a place known today as Benson
Island, a part of the Broken Group Islands in Barkley
Sound. The Tseshaht First Nation’s modern facilites
include an administration building along the highway
that is a wonder of wood and glass beside the river.
Stop by the beautiful Tseshaht Market on your way to
Sproat Lake to fuel up or pick up snacks, souvenirs
and more.

The Huu-ay-aht
The Huu-ay-aht First Nation is a self-governing,
modern treaty Nation whose lands are located in
the Barkley Sound region on the West Coast of
Vancouver Island at the entrance to the Port Alberni
inlet. Today, Huu-ay-aht citizens number close to 750
and primarily reside around the village of Anacla,
close to Bamfield, as well as Port Alberni, the closest
population center where band business offices are
found. The Huu-ay-aht recently purchased retail and
hotel properties in Bamfield and are renovating and
developing them for tourism. ■

Living in Alberni Valley
The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District is a
large and diverse area of over 6,600 square
kilometers centrally located on the west side of
Vancouver Island. It is bordered by the Beaufort
Mountain Range to the east and the Pacific Ocean
to the west. The city of Port Alberni is the largest
city and commercial hub of the region. Port Alberni
currently has a population of more than 18,000 of
the total regional population of over 31,000.
Port Alberni and its encompassing Valley are
surrounded by forests, mountains, ocean inlets, and freshwater lakes and streams. This area of
Vancouver Island is popular for its salmon sports
fishing. Fishing charters operate year round and the rewards
include steelhead, halibut, cod and of course,
five species of salmon.
Additional outdoor activities are available in every
season include scuba diving, kayaking, kiteboarding,
windsurfing, hiking, cycling, golfing, skiing,
snowmobiling and wildlife viewing. A long history
of support for organized sports, arts and culture,
festivals and other entertainment interests are
available in the Valley and surrounding areas.

of specific or multiple use facilities are maintained
for the public to enjoy.
The area has a full spectrum of health services
including a modern regional hospital, intermediate
and extended health care facilities; as well as
facilities and services for seniors and people
requiring special medical needs. The City of Port
Alberni maintains a complete program of essential
services. Up-to-date services include fire protection,
safety, emergency preparedness, water works,
sewage and waste management.
Port Alberni has a temperate climate that is
influenced by a prevailing western flow that results
in periods of extended high levels of precipitation
during winter months (November to February), and equally extended periods of dry, warm weather
during summer months (May to October).
Government services and community infrastructures
are in place to provide opportunities to enjoy the benefits of the area throughout the year.
As with much of Vancouver Island, the climate,
recreational and leisure opportunities and lifestyle attracts people from across Canada to retire here.
These features along with other family-oriented
benefits draw younger people to work in local
businesses.

The region has a full complement of traditional
education opportunities from pre-school, elementary
high school college and university.
A new state-of-the art high school opened in 2013.
Many schools are within walking distance from
homes. Dedicated bus services are available to
provide transportation to students that live beyond
walking distance.
North Island College has a campus located in the
City of Port Alberni with a varied curriculum in both
trades and academic courses. Certificate, diploma
and continuing education programs can be completed
in Port Alberni.
The Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health
Sciences is a post-secondary degree granting
education and research institution located in Port
Alberni. The facility specializes in workplace safety,
health promotion, return to work and disability
management, comprehensive rehabilitation and
disability leadership studies. Real estate prices in Alberni tend to follow the general
trends that are occurring in other communities in
Canada. While there are some increases and
decreases in values based on economic conditions
real estate prices have been generally stable over
the past five years. Overall, real estate is considered
to be a very good value for the lifestyle and all the
services available in the area. In particular, people
moving from Vancouver, Victoria or other relatively
high priced communities find this area to be a
bargain. ■
