DON’T FORGET TO ATTEND
by Collin McKinney
As you read here last week (I hope), our great Society has had a CODE OF ETHICS for a long time. It is one of the
reasons the Society is still here! So here is the rest of the
Code as it appears on the back of your membership card:
6. We shall refrain from forcing our songs upon unsympathetic ears.
7. We shall not use our membership in the Society for personal gain.
8. We shall not permit the introduction of political, religious
or other similar controversial issues into the affairs of the
Society.
9. We shall by our stimulus to good music and vocal harmony, endeavor to spread the spirit of harmony throughout the
world.
10. We shall render all possible altruistic service through the
medium of barbershop harmony.
No, there won’t be a test, we should simply be proud that we
have such a CODE OF ETHICS.
Now, on to other, more interesting, history stuff:
Here’s an article from the December 1942 Barber
Shop ReRe-Chordings about a meeting of the Santa Monica
Chapter:
“We had a good meeting last Monday night. We had some
wonderful entertainment, with a lot of visitors, and the meeting certainly was the start of a good season for us and the
means of interesting a number of new members. The Long
Beach Chapter sent over two quartets…Lt.
quartets…Lt. Frank Otto,
Otto, our
former Secretary, who is now in the Service, brought over
twentytwenty-six colored soldiers to sing Spirituals, and they certainly sang them well. On of the Santa Monica City officials
brought to the meeting a group of Mexican singers and their
music was also very interesting and tuneful. In addition to
that, Ferde Grofe (composer of the Grand Canyon Suite),
Suite),
who is a member of our Chapter, did some numbers, and we
had other stunts that kept the crowd entertained far into the
night. We are very proud that Mr. Grofe is a member of our
Chapter because the feeling is very general out here, and
probably throughout the country, that he is one of this country’s outstanding composers.”
Gosh! Wouldn’t you have enjoyed that chapter meeting?!

2013 Arizona Division Convention Harmony Platoon
Experience the joy and excitement of quartet singing & friendly competition
Friday, April 19, 9AM – 9PM
(Day before AZ Division Convention starts)
Holiday Inn Ballroom (Headquarters Hotel)
12027 N. 28th Dr., Phoenix, AZ
You’ll enjoy a quality quartet experience that is challenging, exciting, and fun in a one-day event
using four terrific songs that most barbershoppers can sing.
You can sign-up as an individual or bring your whole quartet!
We’ll have lots of informal Quarteting and TWO luck-of-the-draw quartet contests, meaning you
will compete with up to 6 other different singers. Also Platoon will have a show for the entire
convention Friday night with our quartets and all of us as a chorus.
You will get sheet music and all 5 tracks of the learning CD for each of four songs chosen from the
Music Premiere Series (T-L-Br-Bs-full mix), so you can take these home and teach them to
your own quartet. Learning tracks by Tim Waurick.
You get a color-coded Harmony Platoon lanyard that identifies you as a Platoon member so you can
sing the songs throughout the convention weekend.
To participate, mail in this registration form.
Registration deadline is Feb. 4th. Music and learning tracks
will be sent out beginning about Valentine’s Day.
Schedule starts Friday morning with informal quartetting and
first chorus practice. Initial quartet assignment and first contest is Friday morning with remix and Finals Contest Friday
afternoon. Finals winner is mike-tester for Saturday Division
Contest!!
Questions? Contact Co-Chairmen Mike Moyer [email protected] or Collin McKinney [email protected].
