Musical Performance
Florante Aguilar and Lori Abucayan
If the history of a culture is told through its music, then Filipino-Americans, Florante Aguilar and
Lori Abucayan are orators of their age. While at
all times retaining a respect for tradition, the
guitarist and singer duo have successfully reinterpreted traditional folk music from their homeland and made it accessible for a whole new global audience. Their wellreceived recent album Paraiso deftly illustrates that spirit.
Florante Aguilar and Lori Abucayan first began their musical collaboration in
2003 where they met at a fundraiser event at UC Davis. Florante's guitar
music was the main attraction, while Lori hosted the event and sang one
Tagalog song midway through the program. It seemed this musical duo was
destined to cross paths since Florante has been searching for a singer to
record an album full of rearranged classic Filipino songs. Upon hearing Lori
sing a heartfelt rendition of the classic Dahil Sa Iyo, Florante immediately
thought "That's the singer I've been looking for! Lori was thrilled to be given
the opportunity not only to sing and perform but also learn about her culture
and its history through music.

Rodel E. Rodis is a member and three-term
President of the Board of Trustees of the San
Francisco Community College District (elected citywide since 1992). He currently serves as State Chair
of the Association of Community College Trustees
(ACCT) which represents the 6,500 community
college trustees in the US. Prior to serving in the
College Board, Mr. Rodis served as a two-term
president of the San Francisco Public Utilities
Commission (SFPUC).
Rodis, who was born and raised in the Philippines, is an attorney in
private practice with a special emphasis on immigration law, family law
and civil litigation. He is also a writer whose weekly column, "Telltale
Signs," appears in the nationally circulated Philippine News (since 1987)
and in a dozen other Filipino-American community papers
(www.rodel50.blogspot.com). He is the author of Telltale Signs of Filipinos
in America, published in 1991 by INA Press.
Rodis taught Philippine History, the History of Pilipinos in America, and
Asian American History at San Francisco State University and at Laney
College in Oakland.
Mr. Rodis is a founder and past Nor-Cal chair of the National Federation of
Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA). He organized the First Global
Filipino Networking Convention at the Moscone Center in August of 2002
which attracted 4,000 delegates.
Rodis is also a founder and the 3rd president of the Filipino Bar
Association of Northern California (FBANC). He is a member of the Board
of Trustees of the New College of California and of the Filipino American
National Historical Society (FANHS).
Mr. Rodis and his wife, Edna, have been married since 1979 and have
three sons: Carlo, Daniel and Eric.
In February of 2003, Rodis was arrested by San Francisco police officers
for passing a counterfeit $100 bill at his neighborhood Walgreens store.
The bill turned out to be genuine and Walgreens paid an undisclosed sum
to settle the civil suit filed by Rodis. The federal suit against the SF police
officers who arrested him is still pending as the Ninth Circuit's 2007
decision denying the police officers' appeal (on the basis of qualified
immunity) has been appealed to the US Supreme Court.
Tax Deferral: who benefits
most…you or the IRS?
A qualified plan or IRA may be a great tax break
for you—now, while you’re alive. But after you’re
gone, so is the break. Estate taxes and income
taxes together can deplete over 60% of your taxdeferred savings, leaving little to provide for those
who depend on you most. Cristobal & Associates
can help you and your advisors design tax and
investment strategies to preserve more for your
family—and less for the IRS.
Contact us to receive an invitation to attend future
tax strategies workshops - for Attorneys only.
