Volunteer Appreciation
The Hill will be holding its Annual Volunteer Appreciation event on Monday, May 5, at 9 am in Dining Room
C. This year resident volunteers are invited to a special breakfast. This event is meant to show appreciation and
say “thank you” to all of our resident volunteers who assist in a variety of capacities throughout The Hill. This
can include everything from serving on a committee, mail delivery, Resident Council, assisting with resident
activities, and more! This event requires Advance Registration - Sign up in the RSVP book.

Board Spotlight: Shaun O’Malley
Shaun O’Malley is the retired Chairman of Price Waterhouse LLP, now a part of
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, and has been a Board Member since June, 2010. Since he is
a resident of nearby Chestnut Hill, he is already known to many of our residents.
Shaun, a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a
degree in Economics, retired from PriceWaterhouse after a 36 year career. He has served
as Chairman of the Panel on Audit Effectiveness, a special committee established by the
accounting profession’s Public Oversight Board at the request of The Securities and Exchange Commission. The Panel conducted a comprehensive review of the existing audit
model and issued its report and recommendations; afterwards Mr. O’Malley testified
before the Senate Finance Committee concerning regulatory legislation. He has served as
Chairman of the Board of the Financial Accounting Foundation.
Mr. O’Malley previously served as a Trustee of a number of educational institutions, including the
University of Pennsylvania, the Penn Health System, The Wharton School of Business, Canterbury School and
Springside School. Besides his service on the Hill Board, Shaun is presently serving on the Boards of The Curtis
Institute of Music, The Bok Foundation, and Chestnut Hill College and as ViceChairman of the Board of the Monell Chemical Senses Center. He is also a Board

The Military Committee Column

It is hard to believe but we have now passed the seven-year mark here at The Hill. Shortly after we
opened we began the Military Committee with over 65 members. Other than our monthly meetings, we were
the driving force behind our flagpole and the flag. Tom Dolan offered us our first flag and we were also given
one by the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove. Prior to lighting the flag (so that we do not have
to raise and lower it every day), our dedicated Maintenance staff took the lead on this. To this day, whether we
live in the villas, cottages, or main building, this is the one thing that we see at least once a day. Every national
holiday (weather permitting) we still hold our ceremonies at the flag pole. We are also responsible for the flag
in the Theatre.
Over the seven years we have featured many speakers during our meeting time slot. I think the majority of our members have already addressed the Hill audience and recounted their careers and their involvement
in various branches of the military.
I am now asking for help, because many of our newer residents are veterans and we would like to hear
from them. We are interested about your involvement (e.g. were you the cook or an expert at cleaning GI cans?
Did you become a tank driver? Was radar your specialty?). A pilot or navigator certainly would have many stories to share. And you know, if you were an expert “goof-off,” we’d certainly enjoy hearing about how you spent
your time.
If you are a new resident here, you will find that you have a lot in common with your fellow veterans.
I would like every one of you to drop me a line at [email protected] or put a note in my mail box (#263)
and let me know whether you have served for one day or ten years. I will then discuss with you the topics that
you could present to the group. I know that some of you do attend our meetings and some don’t. If you are
one of those who don’t attend, I’d like to know why not. Perhaps there is something that would be of interest
to you and we could include it in our programs. If I don’t hear from you, though, there is no way I will know. I
am open to your ideas. We certainly do not want to lose this committee.

The Dixon Meadow Preserve Update

March 19: Cleaned out all 12 nest boxes. They were full of spiders!
(See picture of Larry Brownell and the sticky spider cocoons in Box #6.)
April 6: First official nest box check. We found a few more spiders, but only
Box #4 had any signs of a nest. No bluebirds seen, but many tree swallows
sitting singly or in pairs on top of several of the boxes. We did see a kestrel
and a bald eagle.

many tree swallows swooping around,
checking out boxes, and we found white feathers in both Boxes #3 and #4.
We also saw an Eastern Meadowlark, a first for our bird list, a pair of
Canada geese and a rough-winged swallow. No other activity to report and no birds actively checking out the
real estate. Interesting to note: our first nest start last year was a blue bird nest in Box #1 on April 8.
Nuggets from the Treasure Chest

The Treasure Chest thrift shop is the place to find Hostess, Birthday, Mother’s Day and Graduation
gifts. We have an array of lovingly cared for China, Crystal and Silver. Our selection of costume jewelry is
eclectic and the prices are right!
Currently we are featuring table and floor lamps, luggage and wonderful framed art work (displayed
on the wall.) Visit us often to see other treasures on view in our display cases which change frequently.
We are open on Wednesdays from 3 to 5:30 pm and Sundays from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. Donations are
accepted during open hours. Committee Members are more than willing to assist you at other times and to
offer assistance with donations:

Classical Music Notes

Astral Artists:
Pallavi Mahidhara, piano
Wednesday, May 14, at 8 pm
Founders Room
A winner of Astral Artists’ 2013 National Auditions,
Pallavi Mahidhara has appeared in solo and orchestral
concerts across North and South America, Europe, Asia,
and Africa. Ms. Mahidhara’s musical interests cover an
extensive range, from standard classical works to music of
contemporary and living composers, as well as fusion and
crossover projects.
In 2011, she joined drummer Questlove of The
Roots and international singer/songwriter Keren Ann for a
genre-defying concert, fusing the classical world with
hip-hop, jazz, and folk-pop artists, at the Philadelphia
International Festival of the Arts. In September 2008, on a
few hours’ notice, Ms. Mahidhara stepped in for Van Cliburn at the Liberty Medal Award ceremony at
Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center, honoring former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
Ms. Mahidhara has also participated in such festivals as the Marlboro Music Festival, the International
Musician’s Seminar at Prussia Cove, the Verbier Academy, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Banff Festival.
She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music.

Skyspace at Sunset
Monday, May 12 - Departure Time: 7 pm
Chestnut Hill Friends will open their new Meetinghouse for The
Hill at Whitemarsh residents and their guests to view the Skyspace by
contemporary light artist James Turrell. The light program will begin at
sunset, approximately 8 pm, and lasts for 50 minutes. Plan to be at the
meetinghouse by 7:30 pm to settle in.
Transportation will leave The Hill at 7 pm by Hill bus or carpool. There will be one bus and private
cars for anyone who needs transportation. You can also drive your own car; there is plenty of parking.
If you need transportation, you must sign up on the trip sheet in the RSVP book located in the Mail
Room. This will indicate that you need a ride. If you can provide a ride, please notify Lita Solis-Cohen by
calling 484-532-7625. Visitors are welcome to recline on benches or the floor. Bring a yoga mat, blanket or pillow if you wish.

Chanticleer has been called the most romantic, imaginative, and exciting public garden in America. The garden is a study of textures and forms,
where foliage trumps flowers, the gardeners lead the design, and even the

action for animals and habitats. Cheetahs, hippos, giraffes and much more
make the Zoo Philadelphia’s leading family attraction. Please note that

The Library Column

Referencing the above quote, more than likely every president beginning with George Washington
held the same opinion. Those of us who remember Harry Truman know that he had a way with words and
unlike most politicians he always knew exactly where he stood on an issue. If you would like to learn more
about President Truman, look for his biography in our collection in the 4th floor Library. While you are
there, feel free to check out our May exhibit, entitled “Humor.” We can all use a good laugh from time to time
and you are sure to find something that suits your fancy. Other books you can choose from include Andy
Rooney, Erma Bombeck, Garrison Keillor, and several New Yorker cartoon books.
Reorganization of the Reading Room has been completed and hopefully you will find it more convenient to locate material.
We ask that you help us maintain orderliness by following a few simple rules:
-Please remember that newspapers and magazines do not circulate.
-If you wish to borrow a book it is important that you sign the book out and in.
-You can enter your selection on the sign-out list which is located on the table in the corner of the room. Returned books go on the same table. If you remove a book from a shelf to look over but not take out, leave it on the round table. Committee members will shelve these books. Thank you for your cooperation.
We all remember “spring cleaning.” Few, if any of us, still do serious spring cleaning. However, it is
a good time to sort through what has accumulated over the past year. No doubt you have noticed the new
lambs in the nearby Erdenheim farm fields. The Library has a few lambs of its own who have gone astray. We
respectfully request that you search your premises and return any books that have been forgotten or become
mixed with your own. We do not wish to send our vicious watch cat to retrieve missing books.
Management has provided new bookcases in the Creative Arts Room to replace those which were
destroyed in the deluge. You can find our collection of craft books there. If you have donated books to the
Library and wish to have them acknowledged, please leave a note to that effect with the books. Your Library
Committee wishes you a happy spring. Enjoy our lovely surroundings and until next time keep on reading.

Love Your Neighbor as Yourself: Judaism and Other
Religions, The Ideal and the Real with Rabbi Lance Sussman

Since the emergence of religion thousands of years ago, faith communities have
interacted with one another in a variety of ways. Isolation, cooperation, syncretism,
missionary work and religious warfare are just a few of the possibilities. In this talk,
Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D, Senior Rabbi of Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, PA and Visiting
Professor of History at Princeton, will discuss the history of Judaism’s interactions with
other world religions both externally and internally. Sussman’s presentation will be followed by Q &A.
Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D., was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended
the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and graduated from Franklin & Marshall College
(located in Lancaster, PA) with honors in 1975. Rabbi Sussman received his ordination from the Cincinnati School of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1980 and remained at the College-Institute, where he earned a Ph.D. in Jewish
History in 1987. Before relocating to Elkins Park, PA, Rabbi Sussman served Temple Concord in Binghamton,
New York, and taught at Binghamton University-SUNY, where he was an Associate Professor of History and
Chair of the Judaic Studies Department. He has authored numerous books, articles, and reviews specializing
in the field of American Jewish History. Rabbi Sussman recently accepted an invitation to teach a seminar on
“Judaism in America” at Princeton University.

Neville Dickie will be returning to The Hill for an evening of piano jazz music.
Equally respected in Britain and the United States of America, he is one of the
rare breed of British musicians who has managed to make a name for himself
on both sides of the pond. Neville and his wife Pat also run Sutton Jazz Club in
Surrey, England. He has recorded more than 20 CDs and is in high demand
across the globe with frequent touring dates in Switzerland, France, Belgium,

“The U.S. Financial System - Too Important to Fail!”

After the crash of 2008 which involved most of the financial systems of the
western democracies, Congress passed legislation aimed at preventing future failures.
This presentation will discuss the newest aspect of the Federal Deposit Insurance
Corporation’s responsibilities, including its international coordination work, in relation to the largest complex financial institutions whose failure could disrupt U.S. financial stability.
The FDIC’s expanded responsibilities - adopted by the U.S. Congress in 2010 as part of the DoddFrank Act - followed from the experience of the recent financial crisis (2008) and supplement the FDIC’s
historic responsibilities - since the Great Depression - to maintain stability and public confidence in the U.S.
financial system, including through bank deposit insurance.
Joanne Fungaroli is an attorney who currently works as a senior cross-border specialist, focusing on
coordination with Europe, for the FDIC’s Office of Complex Financial Institutions. She has lived, studied, and
worked in several European countries and speaks French fluently. Her parents, Marilyn and Al, who reside at
the Hill, always encouraged and supported Joanne’s international aspirations. A special thank-you to Marilyn
and Al Fungaroli for inviting their daughter to speak at The Hill.
The Penn Vet Working Dog Center
“Raising &Training Dogs to Save Lives”

Working dogs are dogs specifically trained to assist humans. The Penn Vet Working Dog Center focuses on
dogs that use their noses to save lives, whether that is through explosive detection, search and rescue or medical detection (cancer and diabetes). This presentation, by the Executive Director, Dr. Cindy Otto, the training
staff and some of our talented puppies, will provide a background on the PVWDC and the mission, what we
are doing why we are doing what we are doing. We will explain how we are different from working dog organizations and we will demonstrate some of the amazing skills of our dogs.

Wii Games: Wheel of Fortune with Resident Services

The Resident Services team will be hosting an interactive game session of Wheel
of Fortune on the Wii, which is an interactive game console, with the residents as
the contestants. There will be three teams (three residents on each team) that work

Historians seeking to
explain the origins of World
War II almost always find
their way back to the end
of the Great War and the
Versailles Treaty. Rather than
repeat those earlier debates
Dr. Marc Gallicchio will try a
somewhat different approach
and begin with the following
question: Why do so many people believe that the
treaty ending one war should have prevented another one a generation later?
Dr. Marc Gallicchio is the Chairman of the
history department at Villanova University. His
knowledge of modern military history, with an
emphasis on Japan’s role in World War II as well as
the post-World War II East Asian conflicts that continue to shape international relations to the present,
day are Gallichio’s forte.

Attorney of Montgomery County, first earning her
seat in November 2007 after working for 15 years
in the trenches as a courtroom prosecutor.
She will provide an overview of the criminal justice system and operation of the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. Additionally, she will touch on
the subject of Internet
Safety by identifying the many ways
criminals manipulate
the Internet to commit crimes and harm
victims and offer
direct advice on how
to best use these tools
to prevent becoming a
victim.
