Let's look at a few recent vet visits
MONDAY October 8 2007
Melissa reports ...
Pokey and Tallie go to the clinic to see the vet
Pokey
Dr. Terry came in as soon as she could to check out Pokey and look at his skin and fur loss.
She scraped him in two different areas to check for mange, and nothing showed up.
The doctor feels that Pokey is suffering from some type of allergy, more than likely caused by
flea bites, and this has caused him to chew on himself, which is causing lots of sores on the lower
and back part of his body. We had already started him on Cephalexin, which we are to continue,
and the doctor added Prednisone with a 3-week step-down (1 pill AM & PM meal for 7 days, 1
pill PM meals for 7 days, and then 1 pill every other day for a total of 3 final doses). Additionally,
Pokey is supposed to be bathed in Malaseb shampoo 2-3 times a week, and if possible, we need to
leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes to let it soak in and take effect.
Pokey was so sweet through all of this, and we put him in the van right after his clinic bath
and then straight back in the hospital trailer when we returned to Straydog so he wouldn't be
getting dirty from the sandy dirt of his outside kennel. Pokey can go back outside on Tuesday,
and the Prednisone should take care of the problems and boost his system to help everything heal
and fill in. We are sure Sydney will be so glad to see him. She seems a bit lonely in the kennel
without her Pokey-man.
FIRST: Tony holds onto Pokey while Dr. Terry scrapes his skin to test for the mites that cause mange.
SECOND: Tubby, one of the clinic employees, gives Pokey a bath with some special medicated shampoo.
THIRD: Dr. Terry examines the stub of Tallie's tail. FOURTH: Dr. Terry examines Tallie's infected nipples.
Tallie
Next was Tallie who has several inflamed nipples, a couple of which are fairly large and look
infected. Poor Miss Tallie girl seems to have something wrong most of the time and this is one of
the infections that has set in and hit the glands that run to her teats. She is back on Cephalexin
and we are to continue applying Animax to the ones that are involved. Dr. Terry also double
checked her tail and said everything looks great.
