“Ávila is the most Castillian and august city on the
entire, colossal plain”
Federico García Lorca
Ávila is located close to everything in Spain; it enjoys a
truly privileged geographical position, which results in an
incomparable mosaic of natural landscapes, of cultural
and artistic expression, of places that resound with History
and Art, of popular architecture and local customs, of
folklore and friendly people... too unique to describe in
just a few words. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
because it has an excellently preserved medieval city
centre.
The city is mainly characterized by its complete Medieval
Roman wall (2.5 km of walls surrounding the city). It is also
one of the cities with the highest number of Romanesque
and Gothic churches in Spain. All this, along with its
Cathedral and its amazing number of palaces and
monasteries, has played a crucial role in this designation
of the city. Ávila is one of the most beautiful
and oldest cities in Spain. Its warmth and
friendly environment provide a truly
exceptional experience to learn Spanish.
Designated a “City of Three Cultures” (Christian,
Jewish and Islamic), Ávila is, moreover, an
important stop on the so-called “Camino de la
Lengua”, an historical and cultural route
highlighting the various places that
influenced the development of Spanish as a
language, which is now one of the most
important in the world. Ávila is likewise the
birthplace of two great religious figures, Saint
Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross,
who through their poetry and writings on
mysticism brought the Spanish language to
one of its highest levels. There are vivid
reminders of these two saints located
throughout the city - one can follow in their
footsteps while visiting the many different
historical sites.

Individualized attention
The Institute of Spanish Language and
Culture at the Catholic University of Ávila
offers small classes and individualized
attention to the special needs of each
student. The classes are designed to
introduce or improve students´ knowledge
of the Spanish language and culture. These
classes are taught using a communicative
approach. Of special interest is the
Introduction to Spanish Mysticism course
offered on the writings Saint Teresa of Jesus
and Saint John of the Cross. The professors
who teach this course are internationally
recognized experts.
The main classroom building of the Catholic
University of Ávila sits just outside Ávila with
a splendid view of its medieval walls. In the
distance are the Zapatero mountains, part
of the Sierra de Gredos range. The students
also have access to good libraries, computer
laboratories and the university café.
Other activities
There are visits to the main monuments in the city of
Ávila and day excursions to Segovia, Salamanca, Alba de
Tormes, Fontiveros and Toledo. Professors and guides
accompany the students on all excursions and explain
the historic and artistic details of greatest interest,
including the Carmelite sites. Apart from the above
mentioned activities, there are many other diverse
cultural offerings in the city: concerts, theatrical
productions, conferences and fiestas.
For those interested, there are also several opportunities
to do volunteer work.
