Dear Friends,
“Change is inevitable. Change is constant.” Benjamin Disraeli
This was another year full of changes for Lutheran Social Services. Change -for the
better or the worse- is inevitable in our rapidly changing world. But one thing that
does not change is the fact that we will always have those who need safe shelter,
food, healing and hope in our community. Our job at LSS is to make sure we meet
those needs as best as we are able.
Sometimes change can be the catalyst to create new programs or expand existing
ones to better meet the needs of the community. We would like to share just a few
of the many program changes that took place during this past fiscal year.
The LSS Mobile Food Pantry added two stops to its route in Pomeroy and Franklin
Furnace, thereby serving more people isolated in rural areas. Additionally, Faith
Mission was selected by the Community Shelter Board as the central point of access
for homeless adults entering the Columbus shelter system. In Ashland, our Northern
Ohio Ministries program dramatically increased the number of people it serves by
introducing several programs dedicated to combating hunger and working directly
with families to improve their lives. LSS has also expanded our Ohio Benefit Bank
services and now connects more people to the public benefits and tax credits they
are eligible for at multiple locations throughout our service area.
These are just a few of the developments we’ve celebrated this year. None of these
would be possible without the support of our donors, volunteers and dedicated
staff. With all the changes LSS has gone through in the last few years, we remain
strong and continue to help an ever growing number of people in need transform
their lives. Thank you for your continued generosity, even in times of change.
God Bless,
Nels Hendrickson

Eliminating Hunger
Lori moved from Willard, Ohio to Portsmouth in hopes of making a better life for herself
and her children. Little did she know jobs would be just as hard to come by in the new
town. While trying to take care of her family and attending school online, Lori struggled to
make ends meet. When both her plate and her heart were empty, she turned to the LSS Mobile
Food Pantry. There, she found people willing to help fill her pantry and give her hope. No
longer having to worry about where she would get food to feed her two children, Lori is now
able to focus on her schoolwork. After being sober for more than five years, Lori is earning her
degree in psychology and wants to become a substance abuse counselor so she may help others
who struggle as she has in the past.

The LSS Food Pantries served nearly 1.9 million meals in Fiscal
Year 2010. Faith Mission’s kitchens served 279,237 meals.

Providing Housing
After being released from prison with a long arrest record, Clint found himself at a Faith
Mission homeless shelter. He was determined to begin a new life by going back to school and
finding a job and a place to live. With the help of his Faith Mission case manager, he was soon
able to find an apartment in downtown Columbus and is now a 4.0 student at Columbus
State Community College, where is he working toward an associate’s degree. Wanting to
encourage other men who are going through the same difficulties he did, Clint visits prisons
with ministry teams. He also writes and distributes a monthly newsletter for homeless and
incarcerated men in hopes of helping them to find hope and embrace change. In Fiscal Year 2010, LSS’ affordable housing communities provided
apartments to 984 low-income seniors. Faith Mission helped 2,997
women and men transform their lives.

Promoting Healing
Cody was in a severe car accident where he was ejected from the car and then run over by the
vehicle. Suffering from multiple injuries including a shattered pelvis, broken hip bone, ruptured
pelvis and head trauma, the 18-year-old came to The Good Shepherd Rehabilitation and
Healthcare Campus after being discharged from the hospital. Doctors believed he might never
walk again or at least not without assistance, but a month after arriving, Cody walked out of
The Good Shepherd on his own. He credits part of his remarkable recovery to the caring staff at
The Good Shepherd, especially his physical therapist, who supported him throughout the ordeal.

4,578 people received care at The Clinic at Faith Mission in
Fiscal Year 2010. Lutheran Village of Ashland and The Good
Shepherd provided 58,068 days of care.

Inspiring Hope
In May of 2010, Lawrence County saw tremendous amounts of rain, causing widespread
flooding. Brenda and her family had five feet of water wash through their home in the middle
of the night. Left with no place to sleep, prepare meals or live, Brenda didn’t know where to
turn. Through partnerships with Lutheran churches around the state, Lutheran Social Services
came to the aid of many people in the community, including Brenda. Volunteers removed
damaged flooring and helped rebuild her home. LSS also provided Brenda’s family, and
many others just like hers, with new furniture, food, clothing and other necessities she and her
children needed to rebuild their lives and their home in rural southeast Ohio.
At the Faith Mission Resource Center, 1,551 residents received help
with finding employment and housing in Fiscal Year 2010. Through
LSS’ Outreach Ministries and Disaster Response programs, 179
homes were rebuilt or renovated.

Program Descriptions
Affordable Housing
We provide 19 affordable housing communities throughout Ohio to serve
the needs of people who meet income, age or disability requirements.
These communities provide residents with dignity, safety and a caring
environment. Many of our sites have service coordinators available to link
residents with services that allow them to maintain their independence.
Disaster Response
Acting as the statewide coordinating body for Lutheran Disaster Response,
our staff and volunteers serve people affected by natural disasters. Trained
responders provide material and emotional support, debris removal, case
management and referral to other emergency assistance programs. Food Pantries
LSS’ four food pantries and one mobile pantry serve the needs of thousands
of people year-round. Hungry families and individuals receive food as well
as health care screenings, back-to-school supplies and other services.
Housing Services
Housing services for formerly homeless individuals in Columbus and
Fairfield County offer long-term solutions for housing and employment.
Case managers work with clients to increase their employment and income
opportunities.
Northern Ohio Ministries
Northern Ohio Ministries addresses the needs of people in northern
Ohio by providing case management services, food and material as well as
financial support. Four transitional houses, along with a resource center
providing services such as goal setting and planning, are utilized to assist
families in moving from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Emergency food
assistance is also available through various programs, including monthly
food distributions and a hot meal program.
6
Ohio Benefit Bank
The Ohio Benefit Bank is an internet-based income enhancement program
that connects people to public benefits and tax credits for which they
qualify. By maximizing these, the program can increase the available cash on
hand and strengthen the ability for people to move toward self-sufficiency
and stability.
HHHH
Outreach Ministries
Outreach Ministries serves communities by offering spiritual, material and
financial support. Distribution of material goods, case management and
dental health programs all serve to enhance the lives of those in need.
Senior Services
Independent Living Facility
Kensington Place offers elegant apartments and gracious amenities for older adults who wish to remain an active and independent part of a thriving community.
Assisted Living Care
Lutheran Village of Ashland allows residents to enjoy the lifestyle benefits of independent living with a special emphasis on the changing needs of each individual. Our personal care services focus on the preservation of independence and quality of life.
Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitative Care
At The Good Shepherd people are not only cared for, they are cared about. Our primary objective is to help patients achieve their highest level of function and independence while receiving the finest in nursing and rehabilitative care.
Shelters
Homeless men and women can find shelter, food and free health care at three
Columbus-area shelters and one in Fairfield County. Clients also receive
assistance with housing, employment and counseling, allowing them to start
the process of rebuilding their lives.
Social Enterprise
The social enterprise initiative equips shelter residents with tools to live more
independent and satisfying lives. Clients are hired and trained to work for
LSS-operated businesses, ultimately learning new job skills that will assist them
as they become self-sufficient.

Planned Giving
Cheryl and her family haven’t always had it easy. Growing
up during the Depression, her parents didn’t have much and
their families often had trouble making ends meet. After they
married, Cheryl’s parents did their best to support their children
and instill in them strong values, including the importance of
helping others. They never forgot their humble roots and raised
Cheryl to always be thankful for what she has in life.
“I’m so proud of the things my parents taught me,” said Cheryl.
“I value them highly.”
When Joanne, Cheryl’s mother, passed away last August, she
designated a significant portion of her estate to Faith Mission,
a member of the Lutheran Social Service family. Joanne
volunteered at Faith Mission a few times and knew how much
assistance was provided to hungry, homeless and hurting people.
She also knew how much her monetary support would help.
“We are part of the community, we don’t live a vacuum,” Cheryl
stresses. “Things come and go, so give to something worthwhile.
We appreciate the wide variety of services available at LSS and
we knew the money would be spent in
the right way.”
Like Joanne, many donors have expressed interest in ensuring
that LSS will be able to continue to serve people in need long
into the future. Those interested can help by becoming a
member of the Heritage Society. Heritage Society members
are LSS supporters who have included the agency in their wills,
charitable trusts or annuities, life insurance policies or other
estate plans. A planned gift can earn fixed income for you as
well. For more information, call us at 614-228-5200 or visit
our planned giving website at www.lssplannedgift.org.
As we have said in the past and will continue to say in the
future, we at LSS cannot help the people we do without you.
Thank you for partnering with us to create a better world by
serving people in need.
