FITNESS CLASSES
DEEP WATER EXERCISE
Aqua aerobics provides the same training and benefits as low impact aerobics on land. Because
water is buoyant, the exercise is non-stressful on the body. Water that is waist to chest level
supports fifty to seventy-five percent of your body weight, so it is much easier on your joints and
muscles. The buoyant belt will keep your head comfortably above the surface and you can perform
dry-land exercises in deep water. Class size is limited. Fee: $30/twice a week session. ALL
SESSIONS MEET FOR FIVE WEEKS AT FLORA POOL. $2.00 discount if you provide your own belt.

Age 16 and older. Known as the Zumba
“pool party,” Aqua Zumba gives new
meaning to the idea of an invigorating
workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting,
even shouting, laughing, hooting and
hollering are often heard during an Aqua
Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba
formula and philosophy with traditional
aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba
blends it all together into a safe,
challenging, water-based workout that’s
cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most
of all, exhilarating beyond belief.

Learning Adventures Camp, your child will
engage in their choice of adventure workshops
and get hands-on opportunities to explore in
science, technology, engineering, art and
mathematics. Throughout the week, your child
will participate in 5 different Adventure
Workshops - four of which focus on a specific
topic (see options below) and a special session
we call “Synthesis Team”. In the Synthesis Team
workshop, your child will work with a team of
other students and an instructor, applying what
they’ve learned throughout the day to develop
their own unique projects. The Synthesis Team
workshop is the capstone to their learning
experience and deliberately provides time,
space, materials and encouragement to get your
child inventing, experimenting and innovating.
In each Adventure Workshop, our friendly and
knowledgeable instructors will provide guided
instruction to help teach basic concepts and
then help your child apply those concepts in
their own unique ways. We believe it is this mix
of gaining knowledge and then using it to create
something new and personal that ignites
curiosity and a life-long passion for learning.

DKC’s Women’s Self Defense program is a
close-range street defense system created to
empower women against assault. Unlike many
methods that use upper body strength, the Self
Defense system relies on midsection and lower
body to generate power. The program is simple
and fun. The difference between fear and terror
is in knowing what to do. When we know what to
do, fear is a motivational ally. When we don’t
know what to do or have never experienced it, we
will freeze in terror because we have no clear
goal on how to respond. The difference is in the
training!
Dubuque Mixed Martial Arts Academy takes the
best and most effective skills and drills from
various martial arts styles, and combines them
into one eclectic system of training. The
curriculum blends traditional martial art
teaching concepts with a modern day tactical
approach. It is taught in a safe and controlled
environment by qualified expert instructors, and
focuses on both open hand self defense
applications as well as traditional and modern
weapons defense strategies. Master Ron
Schmitt offers over 35 years of martial arts
experience and has created a unique Tactical
Martial Arts Academy that is Tactical, Practical,
Effective, and Efficient. This session will focus
on Filipino Stick Fighting, Open Hand Drills,
Tactical Knife Defenses, and Gun Defenses &
Disarming Techniques.

May 12. My Name is Mary
Sutter by Robin Oliveira
will be discussed. Mary
Sutter is a brilliant young
midwife who dreams of
becoming a surgeon. Eager
to run away from recent
heartbreak, Mary travels to
Washington, D.C., to help
tend the legions of Civil
War wounded. Under the guidance of two
surgeons, who both fall unwittingly in love with
her, and resisting her mother’s pleas to return
home to help with the difficult birth of her twin
sister’s baby, Mary pursues her medical career
against all odds. Rich with historical detailincluding cameo appearances by Abraham
Lincoln and Dorothea Dix, among others-My
Name Is Mary Sutter is certain to be recognized
as one of the great novels about the Civil War.
This is the All Iowa Reads selection for 2015.
June 14. Gulp: Adventures
on the Alimentary Canal by
Mary Roach will be
discussed. Why is crunchy
food so appealing? Why is
it so hard to find words for
flavors and smells? Why
doesn’t the stomach digest
itself? How much can you
eat before your stomach
bursts? Can constipation kill you? Did it kill
Elvis? In Gulp we meet scientists who tackle the
questions no one else thinks of—or has the
courage to ask. We go on location to a pet-food
taste-test lab, a fecal transplant, and into a
live stomach to observe the fate of a meal. With
Roach at our side, we travel the world, meeting
murderers and mad scientists, Eskimos and
exorcists (who have occasionally administered
holy water rectally), rabbis and terrorists—who,
it turns out, for practical reasons do not conceal
bombs in their digestive tracts. Like all of
Roach’s books, Gulp is as much about human
beings as it is about human bodies.
The Library will show a movie suitable for adult
audiences at 6:00 p.m. on May 20, June 24, and
August 20. Admission, snacks, and friendly
discussion are all free! For titles and other
details, please visit www.dubuque.lib.ia.us/

On Tuesday, June 9,
we’ll discuss Road to
Perdition by Max Allan
Collins and Richard
Piers Rayner. A
life-long Iowan and
Writers Workshop
graduate, Collins is a
prolific author of
mysteries, screenplays,
and comics. Road to Perdition balances
a hard-boiled gangster story against a
tender father-son relationship.
On Tuesday, August
11, we’ll discuss This
One Summer by Jillian
Tamaki and Mariko
Tamaki. Every summer,
Rose and Windy’s
families rent adjacent
vacation cottages and
the two girls are best
friends for just a few
weeks. But this year things are different.
The girls are older, their families are
strained, and nothing is as simple or
clear as it used to be. Cousins Jillian
and Mariko Tamaki won the Printz
Award and Caldecott Honor for this
honest and evocative summer story.
