St Peters in a new world
In recent times, I have
given a great deal of
thought to the place of our
College in a global context.
As a remarkable institution, we are true to our mission i.e. to
provide excellence in Christian co-education. One simply needs to
look at the daily activities across the College to witness Christian
values in action, or to read the various annual reports that outline
the excellent outcomes in all areas of the curriculum and across
our cocurricular programs e.g. music, sport, the arts and service
learning. But what of the future? What will be the challenges?
by Adrian Wiles
Head of College
The higher education sector is wrestling with the same questions,
and emerging from their deliberations seem to be three key points
that are immediately aligned to our strategic intent. Firstly, the cost
of education using the current model continues to grow. Clearly,
government funding for schools is under pressure, and recent
announcements in Australia suggest that in the non-government
sector, we need to be calculating and creative in order to remain
viable. The second consideration is the change that technology
has brought to teaching and learning across the world. It is of no
surprise to see that young people are using various technological
modes to not only change world structures, but to find the most
suitable educational experience – regardless of where the teacher
or provider may be situated geographically. Finally, the relevance
of what is being taught will be challenged as our country redefines
our position in the world order. Reference to Australia’s academic
performance in comparison to that of other countries appears
in the press nearly every other day, and this point weighs on the
minds of many, both in and out of the sector.
It is clear that St Peters has historically been a school where the
students and staff have been drawn from many parts of the world.
Their contributions have been significant in the formation of the
College’s culture, over the past seven decades. St Peters, in turn,
4 Plus Ultra incorporating SPOSA Bulletin July 2014
has been significant in guiding and shaping many young men and
women as they make a difference in the world. I am aware of the
impact that St Peters Old Scholars have had in PNG, in the USA
where many past students are operating in the highest echelons
of the business world, and in Singapore where St Peters is well
represented in that country’s society. Our challenge is to build
on our past strengths and to engage in a world where local and
overseas students have a myriad of global educational choices.
I believe that mediocrity will result if schools are not proactive
in their approach to education in a new world. From a St Peters
perspective, we are moving in a way that honours our mantra of
‘Plus Ultra’ – ever higher or ever beyond. The St Peters Lutheran
College Foundation’s Directors are exploring ways to develop this
philanthropic structure to support some of the future financial
requirements of the College. A future perspective must be
adopted, while acknowledging the past contributions through
the Foundation. Our recent move to introduce ‘bring your own
technology’ (BYOT) greatly enhances our ability to embed and
expand new learning tools as they become available. We are
deliberately positioning ourselves to have influence on the
curriculum at all levels, and are closely monitoring the progress
of new initiatives as they cement their place in the new global
educational establishment e.g. The Khan Academy. Strategically, we
as a College are underway with our thinking and planning.
We are confident that St Peters Lutheran College will always
be a place of learning that provides a clearly defined, relevant,
purposeful, and excellent experience for thousands of young
people every year. I have no doubt that St Peters is, and will
remain, a learning community firmly underpinned by Christian
values - notwithstanding the changing surrounds. The ‘constancy’
of Christ Jesus in our lives (and at the core to our College
community) holds us in good stead as we meet the new challenges,
and embrace our position in the world.

I’m contemplating moving house, looking around
and realising how much “stuff” has accumulated.
Only a few years ago when I joined St Peters I had
nowhere near enough possessions to fill the truck
they sent for my worldly goods. Now, looking at
the house that’s filled to the brim, I’ve started the
process of going through the accumulation of several
years. I am asking myself those very important
questions – “How important is this to me? Why am
I holding onto this?” And I have realised that the
things that we hold
onto as important
When we
show clearly who
we are and what

we value.
It is almost a year since the official opening of the Performing Arts
Centre. If you have not visited this marvellous new facility, you are in
for a surprise. If you are celebrating your reunion or if you just want to
come back to see your old school, you could see it during this year’s
Reunion Weekend on 20-21 September.
Our alumni officers are working hard to send out invitations to this jampacked weekend. This year, there are some new events: a function with
the Head of College at the Performing Arts Centre; and the inaugural
Old Scholars Performances concert. It will be exciting to enjoy each
other’s fellowship and talents in the spectacular new building.
SPOSA is continuing to support the St Peters Foundation through
sales of Not Just a School, a wonderful publication full of stories by
Old Scholars. Please contact the SPOSA Office for your copy.
SPOSA is fortunate to have a new web presence provided by the
College. There is plenty of news and information about reunions and
other SPOSA events. Without needing to log in, you can change your
contact details by filling out the online form.
A few weeks ago, I attended the impressive St Peters You’ve Got Talent
Grand Final. SPOSA provided the prize money for the annual talent
competition, and arranged three large cheques for the Toft Brothers,
who won the $50 3rd prize, Georgia and Ayla, who won the $100 2nd
prize, and Magic Jordsan, who took home the $250 1st prize.
In this issue of Plus Ultra, you will read about SPOSA’s exciting move to
a permanent, customised home for SPOSA, introducing a welcoming
space for Old Scholars to visit and engage with the history and culture
of St Peters at the P&F Centre
I hope you enjoy this wonderful publication.
compassion, love
and appreciation
for each other,
bullying is not a

we have courage
and stand up for

get along.”
Our school also has
values, things that
our community holds
as important. These
values are taught
every day, but not
often talked about.
They are taught
through our actions,
through what we say
and how we respond.
So what are these
values? There are ten
that we particularly
focus on: love,
justice, compassion,
forgiveness, service,
courage, humility, hope, quality and appreciation.
We are not individuals in isolation – we live in a
community. Living in community has attendant
responsibilities, and these are informed by our
values. Our College sees everything that the staff
and students do and are, in relation to God, and sees
each person as being in a relationship with God.
Therefore the school values and cares for all people,
encouraging us to reflect the characteristics of God
as we live in community.
When we have a spirit of compassion, love and
appreciation for each other, bullying is not a
problem. When we have courage and stand up for
justice and show forgiveness, we get along. When we
are humble and seek to serve we make this world a
better place. When we hold on to hope and seek to
do all things well, we can make a difference.
This is what we focused on during Faith Week this
term. The Faith Team led worship about Spirit: Living
in Community – those values that the Spirit brings
out in our school community. The Junior School
made Spirit flame decorations and fun activities were
had in Middle School. The week finished on a high,
with a community lunch, as people joined together
over a shared meal.

St Peters Website gets
a facelift
New Features include video tours, digital publications, iCal
functionality and more!
The new St Peters website and app was
recently launched to our community.
For the first time St Peters has a
website that brings together the whole
community including SPOSA, Foundation
and Parents & Friends.
Some new features include video tours
of both schools; digital publications
including The Rock, Cornerstone and
Plus Ultra; and iCal functionality, which
allows users to view the St Peters
calendars on their device without
visiting the website.
For the first time the Indooroopilly
and Springfield schools have their own
school sub-sites. This recognises the
growth of the Springfield school and
allows the College to more accurately
show new families what St Peters offers
at each school.
A new section, Global School, shows
the school as a multicultural community
and demonstrates the ways that
St Peters is coming of age as a school of
international repute.
Old Scholars, through the revamped
SPOSA section, now have the ability to
change their contact details and find out
about reunions without logging in. The
directory however, although popular,
was not cost-effective, and will be
inactive as of the end of the year.

The St Peters app was designed for
current parents and allows community
members to quickly and conveniently
access sporting fixture information,
calendars and newsletters. It also allows
the College to send urgent messages
direct to our community when needed.
You can download the free app at the

Go Blue for Autism Day
by Kaylee Neil and BJ Scott
Year 7 Students, St Peters Springfield
Excitement filled the air as St Peters Springfield’s Prep - 12 classes
created their coin trails to raise money for Autism.
Well done to Year 6 with the longest trail and most money, raising
an extraordinary $150. Coming close behind were Prep T and
Year 4.
Thank you to everyone who participated, as we are extremely
proud to announce together we raised an amazing total of
$988.15. All the money raised will go to the Exceptional Learners
‘Chill Room’.
We would also like to give a special thanks to the coordinators
of the event, Mrs Wise, Mrs Lythall and Sean Thomas, alongside
Year 7 students and Mrs Hokin for making the day a success.

Represent St Peters at the ANZAC
Day Parade
The Symphonic Winds and Drumline combined to represent St Peters in this
year’s Brisbane ANZAC Day Parade. Each and every one of the band members
displayed skill and energy marching and performing three pieces from
memory, an amazing effort! Led by Drum Major and Year 12 student, Christian
Coulthard, the challenge of marching together looked effortless and many
hours of practice paid off. The band marched and played twice during the
morning parade. It was a joy to watch and be involved in and many positive
comments were heard from nearby onlookers.
The students represented the school and themselves admirably and I am sure
they will remember this ANZAC Day with fond memories and a sense of pride.
Indooroopilly ANZAC
Day Service
At the traditional whole school ANZAC service,
the St Peters Indooroopilly students, staff and
community members observed the traditions
of the last post and the laying of the wreath.
Head of College, Mr Adrian Wiles, delivered a
speech about the traditions of ANZAC Day and
what it means to us at school as well as in the
broader context of being Australian.

they “love the camaraderie and team work” Congratulations ladies,

Two of the girls are from Lycée

next year during the Easter
holidays for students studying
Senior French.
Our other French student,
Camille Banũls, is staying
with the Hanisch family.
Becky Hanisch participated
in a six month Southern
Cross exchange to Limoges, France. During this time, as well as
developing her French to a very high standard, she made friends
with Camille, who was a Springfield student until the end of
Term 2.
Participating in exchanges, both hosting and traveling, are
tremendous ways to broaden our cultural knowledge. Families
that have hosted students have developed strong ties over the
period and lasting friendships have been made.
It is enjoyable to see our Springfield community welcome these
French students as they become part of St Peters Springfield, if
only for a short time.

Year 8 Kaleidoscope:
Work in Progress
Wow! What terrific performances! Congratulations
to the cast of the Year 8 Kaleidoscope Work
in Progress for the very high standard of the
performances! This year’s Kaleidoscope was
a series of interlinked one act plays directly relevant to the cast’s possible
experiences in Junior High with music chosen from a variety of sources to reflect
these experiences.
by Christine Taylor
Head of Music
The 2014 Kaleidoscope cast greatly enjoyed the opportunity to rehearse and
perform in the St Peters Performing Arts Centre Auditorium. This amazing venue
enhanced rehearsals as the large stage allowed greater depth and breadth in the
types of performance-media integrated into the performance; cast members had
the opportunity to perform in a professional performance venue; and for the first
time, students who were interested in behind-the-scenes work could be part of a
backstage crew.
I thank the many staff and guests who supported and enriched Kaleidoscope
in so many ways. I particularly acknowledge the musical leadership of Mr
Benedict Braxton-Smith; the inspiring dramatic leadership of Ms Trish Allen;
the terrific costumes of Mrs Kathy Frost; the musical creativity and amazing
pianistic skills of Mr Christian Gante; the imaginative and fun choreography
of Mrs Lauren Soslowski-McKean; and the support of the St Peters Music
Department administration team. I also thank the parents who spent many hours
making props and costumes.

…The level of professionalism and energy that

It was funny, moving and entertaining and

It is a marvellous opportunity for the Year 8
students to work as a team, gaining in
confidence, discovering new friendships,
learning new skills (eg skipping) and
being disciplined in working such a large
commitment into their busy student
timetables… Of course the venue was terrific.

Growing up in a musical family,
Robbie was eight years old when he
began learning guitar and found his
voice. Vocal training enabled him to
embrace a wide variety of musical
styles, which he is exploiting during
the competition. Robbie’s voice
has been described as carrying
‘nostalgia beyond its years’. He is
dedicated to pursuing a musical
career, and has abandoned an Engineering degree in favour of Music.
Robbie performs as a soloist in Brisbane venues, including Saint Lucy’s

Coldplay, Radiohead, Matt Corby and Jack Johnson.

Atlas wows St Peters

Having played at the Community Open Day for the newly dedicated
Performing Arts Centre – to the great appreciation of all who heard
them – the appearance of Atlas as guest artists at the SPYGT Grand
Final was an added bonus to St Peters pop band lovers.
An acoustic and Pop group, Atlas’s unique sound combines three-piece
harmonies with acoustic guitar and percussion. Charlie Yeates, (lead
singer), Daniel Tucker (guitar) and Scott McKinnon (drums and band
chef) all 2012 St Peters graduates, began pursuing their music career in
2013, having formed through casual busking years prior.
In 2013, Atlas entered an international originals band competition,
placing first in the heats and the Brisbane Grand Final at the Hi-fi. Their
achievements in Brisbane led to the National Grand Final held in the
Metro Theatre, Sydney, where they were awarded third place.
Following their success in Sydney, they released their debut single,
Shadows, in early 2014, which received high accolades. They continue
to write new material and plan to release their EP in coming months.

representing the school admirably.
Queensland Youth Orchestra’s Junior String Ensemble presented a
relaxed and entertaining matinee concert with St Peters Soloists.
The QYO ensemble’s conductor, Chen Yang, commented that the
PAC was in his top three classical performance venues in the state.
St Peters Chorale was the first school ensemble to be part of a
University of Queensland Music Department Concert. The UQ
Symphony Orchestra and the UQ Chorale rehearsed with the
Chorale in the PAC Auditorium before the three groups combined
for an outstanding performance of The Polovtsian Dances from
‘Prince Igor’ by Alexander Borodin under the direction of Warwick
Potter, at QPAC.
St Peters Chorale also took part in the Brightest and Best Festival
of Sacred Music, a bi-annual event organised by the Royal School
of Church Music Australia (Queensland Branch). Choristers from six

schools came together at St Peters PAC Auditorium to rehearse a
wonderful range of sacred repertoire from across the ages before
their performance at St John’s Cathedral.
The Senior Stage Band performed to a capacity audience in the
Brisbane Big Band Festival at the Brisbane Jazz Club. The Stage
Band also enjoyed an energetic workshop with the event’s patrons
John Morrison and Jacki Cooper. This ensemble was joined by
the Intermediate Stage Band, and the professional Late Shift Big
Band to entertain at the Music Support Group’s fabulous Jive into
June event.
Symphonic Winds, St Peters Soloists, Tchaikovsky Strings and the
Middle School string ensembles, Amadeus and Corelli, competed in
the Queensland Youth Music Awards. Amadeus was awarded first
place in its section retaining the Robina Gill Trophy and the Corelli
ensemble placed third. The Secondary School String Orchestra
section was held in the St Peters PAC Auditorium. The St Peters
Soloists brought the Arriaga Trophy back to St Peters for the third
year in a row. St Peters Symphonic Winds was awarded a Gold
Award by the Adjudicator and finished third in their division.
The 10th Combined Middle School Sing Together Choral Festival
was held in the PAC Auditorium in June. Students from ten
local primary schools rehearsed together during the day with
leading Australian composer and educator, Paul Jarman. The day
culminated in a massed performance of the works learnt.

Old Scholar Nkosana Mafico (2011) is co-founder and co-CEO
of PeeP Digital. PeeP have developed an intelligent platform
that simplifies the international phonetics system and makes
English pronunciation easier and faster to master.
“At PeeP Digital we believe in empowering the world one word

to Asia, Latin America and Africa,” Nkosana said.
2011 St Peters graduate, Lorna Shepherd, is majoring in
Psychology at Dickinson State University in North Dakota.
Awarded a scholarship to be a part of the Dickinson Blue
Hawks basketball and track teams, in her first year she was a
freshman starter in a NAIA div 1 school and was 0.01 second
off competing at the National Championships.
“I have loved every moment and opportunity I have been

her best possible

thanks to time management skills she developed through
the pressures of high school that a solid foundation was

work I and many of my teachers put in I would never have
been both academically and sporting-wise as successful in
college as I have been.”
To date, PeeP Digital has received $25,000 worth of investment

“We progressed well in the competition and eventually
made it to the finale. I was required to stand up in front of
approximately 100 people and four judges and pitch our idea
in five minutes,” he said.
They were awarded second place but won the People’s Choice

in Brisbane that supports early stage, high-tech companies
through their first few years of development by building their
business management capabilities; fostering mentor networks
for start-up founders; creating investor-ready companies; and
graduating companies with increased chances of success.
Unfortunately they were unable to differentiate their value

did learn about himself, working in teams and start-ups.
“Luckily for me, the day that I finished up with GetXperience,
another team at ilab (PeeP Digital) asked me to join them
and I now head Business Strategy and Development for the
company,” Nkosana said.

Bruce met his wife Elizabeth while both
were studying singing at the Queensland
Conservatorium of Music. After gaining
his Bachelor of Music, Bruce became a
lecturer in voice at the Conservatorium.
Bruce’s deep, rich voice graced many fine
concert halls in Queensland, and took
the family to London for six months in
1975, where he studied at the prestigious
Guildhall School of Music. After returning
to Brisbane in 1976, Bruce became
an ABC soloist, performed frequently
in lieder recitals, and was a soloist with the Queensland Symphony and in
operas. He was an examiner for the Australian Music Examiners’ Board and a
vocal adjudicator.
When Bruce became a member of the teaching staff at St Peters, he was
delighted to be a part of this magnificent school, one of the finest in Queensland.
Discussions with teachers like Michael Selleck, John Bellamy and Neal Nuske
were intellectual and entertaining. Bruce’s three children also attended
St Peters: Adrienne (1981), Rebecca (1983), and Roderick (1986). His grandson
Nicholas Stewart, now in Year 11, carries on this strong tie with the school.
Bruce’s wife Elizabeth has been a singing teacher at St Peters for many years
and continues in this capacity. Bruce’s many contributions to the school are also
remembered in an annual English bursary prize.
When Bruce Brazier retired from St Peters, he received a rousing standing ovation
from the entire school community in the chapel. Later, when Bruce passed away
in 2006, he was farewelled by hundreds of former students, staff, family and
friends in a service in the St Peters chapel.
Bruce’s daughter Adrienne said the seat is “in remembrance of a truly good man
whose love and kindness touched the lives of so many people.”
This plaque joins many others donated by families and friends in memory of
cherished members of our community who, like Bruce, have left a mark on St Peters.

VALE GWEN DAWSON
31 January 1932 – 30 January 2014
by Carson R Dron
Former St Peters Headmaster
On Wednesday, 5 February, Lois and I travelled with Jim and Jan
Nankervis to Beachmere to attend the funeral of Gwen Dawson,
who worked at St Peters for 22 years, most of those in charge
of catering. Gwen passed away just one day short of her 82nd
birthday, on 30 January.
Gwen’s role at St Peters was enormous, complex, and timeconsuming. Besides providing three meals a day and morning and
afternoon teas for over 300 boarders, she provided breakfast for
the cleaning staff, meals for boarding staff and the Works Crew,
and a very generous morning and afternoon tea for teaching,
administration and support staff each school day. Then there
were cut lunches for sporting teams on the weekend, food to
organise for groups going on camps, special events too numerous
to mention which required special meals, and of course the Staff
Breakup at the end of each school year – who will forget the
spread she put on and the fellowship and conviviality involved
on those occasions. Gwen did all of this with reliability and
unfailing dedication.
I know that the grumbles by boarders about the food – a universal
problem in institutions – were the bane of Gwen’s life. Gwen took
them seriously, and was always looking for ways to improve the
food and the choice, given that she was constrained by a budget.
In fact, soon after a boarding parent complained about lunch
28 Plus Ultra incorporating SPOSA Bulletin July 2014
choices, Gwen introduced a
buffet that was the envy of
very day student.
On Herbstfest days Lois
would work all day in
the Flea Market or the
Cake Stall. At the end of
the day a roast chicken
with trimmings would
be delivered to the
Headmaster’s residence,
courtesy of Gwen, who
thought of everyone.
She was a great family
person. She had three sons,
six grandchildren (all of
whom were present at the
funeral) and five greatgrandchildren, and she was proud of every one of them. As one of
her sons related, there would be family gatherings at the home of
Gwen and Alec most weekends, and any member of the extended
family was always welcome, whether for a visit, a stop-over for one
night or for a month or more.
Gwen was a true treasure, and I am immensely grateful for the
contribution she made to the life of the College over many years
during my time as Headmaster.
Allan John Carsburg
(1978 – 1979)
11 May 1962 – 28 April 2014
by Graham Carsburg (1987)
Allan, nicknamed Brick, was a weekly boarder at St Peters for
Years 11 and 12. He immediately made his mark in Rugby and
athletics, participating in TAS competitions, especially as a
member of the winning 1978 TAS inter-school cross country
team. He was a member of the 2nd XV TAS runners up in Year 11
and of the 1st XV – also TAS runners up, in 1979.
After leaving school, Allan returned to work on the family farm
at Gatton. Over the next few years his life revolved around
playing football in Gatton with the U18’s winning a premiership,
then A Grade winning a few more premierships in the Ipswich
Rugby League competition. He won the Gatton Rugby League
Best and Fairest trophy in 1982 and 1883. His proudest moment
was representing Ipswich in the State League. After moving on
to work in Brisbane for several years, he eventually moved to
Mooloolaba where sadly he passed away after complications
from heart surgery.
A loving son, who cared for his ageing parents, Allan was also a
devoted and dedicated father to Levi and Kane. His sister Carol
(1983) also attended St Peters.
Norman Gaskell (1947)
28 September 1932 – 1 April 2014
by Gary Gaskell
Having completed his primary education at Rochedale State School,
Norm attended St Peters for his Sub Junior year, as many students
did in those early days. Leaving school, he worked with his parents
Hilda (Rojahn) and Henry and his older brother on their vegetable
farm in Rochedale. He witnessed great changes in his life time and
spoke often about the pleasures and challenges of the farming life.
Norm took over the farm in 1966 and saw many good seasons
until he sold it in 1988. He then worked as gardener at Redeemer
Lutheran College until his retirement. He moved to Salford Waters
in 1992 and looked after his mother until the Lord took her in 2001.
Norm loved sports: playing cricket for the Rochedale cricket
team; tennis in the Redlands competition; golf and bowls. He
loved to go fishing and crabbing in Moreton Bay and ‘down the
pin’ for flathead. In the 1990’s he could be seen wading into the
creek beside Salford Waters with a crab pot in hand. He travelled
extensively in Australia and New Zealand reaching Antarctica only a
few years ago.
Norm never married but he enjoyed the love of family and his
many friends. On 1 April he played a round of golf in the morning,
attended a morning tea at Salford Waters and then headed out for
a game of bowls where he suffered a heart attack. He was a quiet,
wonderful man loved by all, always with a joke at hand to cheer
those he met. He was always volunteering at church, retirement
and charity events. He will be deeply missed.

21 Old Scholars and their
partners catch up at
Kalbar’s Royal Hotel
by Nicky Boynton-Bricknell
SPOSA PUBLICATIONS EDITOR
On a crisp May morning, 21 Old Scholars and their partners caught up for a gettogether at the Kalbar’s Royal Hotel. Enjoying typical country hospitality were Old
Scholars from the 1940s to the 1980s, who enjoyed looking back at their school
days and hearing new stories.
SPOSA is calling for expressions of
interest in performing at the Inaugural
Old Scholars Performances as part of
the 2014 Reunion Weekend activities.
Any performers are welcome, including
musicians, singers, actors, comedians,
dancers, and poets.
The recital will be held at the Performing
Arts Centre Auditorium from 5-6pm on
Saturday 20 September, and there will be
at least one rehearsal in the lead up to
the performances. If you are interested
in taking to the stage and sharing your
talents, please get in touch with the
SPOSA Office at [email protected].

Ivy Stephan (Peters, 1950) brought
along a tea cosy she’d made under the
eagle eye of Mrs Guthrie in 1947, and
Joyce Damm (Badke, 1953) recalled
with some glee, birthday midnight
feasts and short sheeting each
other’s beds.
The regional reunion was organised
by Doreen Pocknee (Venz, 1960),
from Moogerah.
In the founding years of St Peters, the
predominately German-populated Fassifern Valley had a strong tie to the College
through the families’ affiliation with the Lutheran church. Long-time Boonah
district pastor, the Reverend Finger, had played a strong role in the establishment
of St Peters in 1945 and served on the College Board of administration for several
years. His daughter Erika became the girls’ governess and remained in that
position, beloved of hundreds of boarder girls, from 1946 to 1972.
Also there, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, were Heather (Evans,
1947–1948) and Ron Bushby of Boonah.
