2012 ANNUAL REPORT
The Mountwest Foundation was established in 2009, following the 2008 separation of
Mountwest Community & Technical College from Marshall University as a result of
West Virginia House Bill 3215. The Foundation started with a three-member Board of
Directors and four endowed scholarships. Today, the Board of Directors is 14 members
strong, and the Foundation manages more than a dozen scholarships.

The last few years have been the journey of a
lifetime. We have been part of an educational
transformation within our community that will,
undoubtedly, benefit our children, grandchildren and
generations to come.
As a local businessman, I appreciate the quality and skill level of students
graduating from Mountwest Community & Technical College. I am
certainly not alone when it comes to the number of local businesses and
corporations reaping the benefits of a more qualified applicant pool thanks
to the training students receive at Mountwest.
That makes now the ideal time to invest in the future of Mountwest and our
local workforce. Through business and individual gifts and grants to the
Mountwest Foundation, the college is able to offer more employee training
programs, scholarships, internships and develop new programs that
produce highly skilled workers.
We are so proud of the great strides the Mountwest Foundation has made
since 2009 and are pleased to share with you our first annual report, which
includes highlights from our first two years.

Hello from our wonderful new campus atop the
“mount” off Fifth Street in Huntington. I am extremely
proud of this new campus and have greatly enjoyed
welcoming students and staff members to our new home.
As you can see, Mountwest Community & Technical College is a growing
institution. A move of this magnitude would not have been possible without
you, our faithful supporters. There are so many exciting benefits of our
new campus, one of which is our new, one-stop Student Services area.
We worked with consultants, students, faculty and staff to design this area
to meet the needs of all. The ability for a student to accomplish all of their
admissions, advising and financial aid tasks in one, single-stop location is a
wonderful feature of our new campus.
We are always looking for more ways to improve our institution and provide
our students with the best possible education. Our region receives a
tremendous return on investment from a Mountwest graduate and from
the Mountwest operation. The dollars that are invested in the college by
government and private donors are returned in a very short amount of time
and many times over. Invest in the future. Invest in our community. Invest in
Mountwest.

Student Scholarships
In 2010, the Mountwest Foundation developed a new scholarship program for private scholarships and worked with Mountwest Community
& Technical College and the Office of Financial Aid to create a disbursement program for private scholarships. Now, scholarship selection occurs
biannually and is conducted by a group of faculty and staff.
Each year, the number of scholarships and number of awards continues to grow. In addition to the scholarships awarded in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012,
donors also established a number of other annual scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year during that time. Annual named scholarships require a
gift of $1,000 or more. Scholarships become fully endowed when a minimum $15,000 gift is made.
In 2011-2012, the Mountwest Foundation also offered donors the added incentive of West Virginia state tax credits through the Neighborhood Investment
Program for scholarship gifts of $500 or more.

The Mountwest Foundation hosted its inaugural Scholarship Brunch in April 2011. The event gave donors the
opportunity to meet scholarship recipients and their families.
The inaugural brunch was such a success that the Foundation hosted the 2nd Annual Scholarship Brunch in
April 2012 with an even greater number of donors and student scholarship recipients than the year before.
Academic & Student Support Programs
In addition to scholarships, private donors help support current and future academic initiatives of the College. These
gifts provide matching funds for state grants and help ensure that our students are learning on state-of-the-art
equipment, especially in highly technical fields.
Mountwest Community & Technical College has also focused its attention on retention, namely through the college’s
Beacon Project. This initiative, funded through a three-year, $5 million U.S. Department of Labor grant to the
college, offers students a three-tiered internal support structure consisting of a peer coach, caseload counselor and
faculty mentor and alters traditional delivery methods for developmental education. By improving student retention,
Mountwest will produce more qualified graduates for our local workforce.
As the college collects valuable data during this initial phase, it plans to grow the imprint of the Beacon Project on the
college. Private funding ensures sustainability of Mountwest’s proven plan for student success.
Capital Improvements
In fall 2012, Mountwest Community & Technical College moved to its new campus on Fifth Street Hill in Huntington.
The campus features a newly renovated 115,000-square-foot academic building with five floors of classroom,
laboratory, meeting and office space. The 28-acre campus also offers the College ample room for future growth.
As the College settles into its new home, private dollars will help Mountwest continue to enhance its facilities to meet
changing student and workforce needs.
Brick by Brick Campaign
From 2010 to 2012, nearly 30 faculty, staff, students and friends became part of campus history by sponsoring bricks
through our Brick by Brick Campaign. In summer 2012, the bricks were installed along the front entryway of the new
academic center.
Bricks are still available for purchase and are an excellent way to
reflect a distinct network of friendships and relationships as well
as personal and family milestones.
