a new trophy at Lake Sebago, Sloatsburg, NY is for women’s competitive canoe sailing. It is dedicated to Kay Ryan by daughter, Joan Krilla and to be raced for the first time in 2013.
Kay Ryan, a dedicated canoe sailor, at Lake Sebago, NY and Sugar Island on the St. Lawrence River,
taught other women, including Sherrie Winkworth, Marilyn Vogel and Joan Ryan Krilla, that racing a
canoe under sail was fun and a sport in which women could compete. Kay served as Sailing Chairperson at
Lake Sebago for four years.

Roger Corinth, Sailing Chair of the ACA MidWest Division, passed away July 1, 2013. Roger was a professional
engineer who used to sail with Bob Halsey at Pymatuning, Ohio. He built a sail canoe and raced with us at Union
Lake in NJ, and Quakertown, PA, as well as at his home port in Pymatuning, Ohio before he retired to upper
Michigrn. He was always a thoughtful gentleman who loved sailing, camping, traveling, and working on sail rigs.
He is survived by a loving family and many friends.

City Island Canoe and Yacht Club
fay jordaens
In 1924, Reggie and Elizabeth Ratliff, built their boat club on pilings at West 515 City Island Ave. right off the
avenue; Bay water clearly visible from the City Island sidewalk, as it slapped up against bulkheading on high tide!
The large double decked boat club entrance fronted on City Island Ave., and had a large ‘Paul Butler’ clubroom
sign to its immediate left, then, as you entered the dark shed, racked, stored canoes and kayaks plus equipment, i.e.,
leeboards, masts, tillers, rudders etc., became visible. Once thru the shed you emerged on the other side, into brilliant
sunlight, you faced Reggie’s beautiful, freshly gray painted handball court to the left, with gangplanks leading to the
floats in front of you, and in the distance was Eastchester Bay. ‘Aunt Liz’ and Reggie lived in an apartment on the
second floor that fronted on C.I. Avenue. Also on the 2nd floor, customers often sat outside another clubroom, just to
enjoy the view, the magnificent, beautiful, panoramic view of the Harbor and New York City skyline.
The American Canoe Association [ACA], est. in 1880, scheduled official races at the C.I. Canoe & Yacht Club in the
mid 1920’s, when deck boat sailors raced ketch rigged 16x30’s [sixteen foot long, by 30 inches wide]. By the 1940’s,
we competed for national and international trophies, in decked canoes that were sloop rigged, 17 foot long, and as
much as 43 inches wide. The America’s Cup is the oldest sailing trophy in America, the New York International
Challenge Cup for Decked Canoes, is the second oldest American sailing trophy [1885], won in 2011 by American,
Chris Maas.
Official ACA races and elimination races for national and international trophies, were held on the west side of City
Island in Eastchester Bay, hosted by the C.I. Canoe and Yacht Club. Races consisted of 3 times around the course.
The ‘starting line’ was at the red marker off of the Morris Yacht Club, then boats sailed to the second ‘red can,’ about
1 mile in a westerly direction and completion of the triangular course, or finish line, was between a third marker and
the Committee boat. Internationally famous American sailors include the names of Friede, Armstrong, Whitman and
Clark.
While this article gives some idea of Decked Boat racing at the City Island C. and Y. Club, it’s impossible to give you
a snapshot of the wonder of the Club as it existed in the mid 1940’s. In our clubrooms we enjoyed the camaraderie
of friends and fellow competitors. During WW II, Mrs. Ratliff made a statement about the uniformed soldiers and
sailors regarding their racked boats. She said: “We will care for the boats of our boys till they come home from the
War.” My husband, Frank Jordaens, a national and international winning sailor, was one of the recipients of their
generosity. We were all so fortunate to belong to that club, during that time, shepherded by the Ratliffs, where we
forged lifetime friendships. Currently, the club is in the capable hands of their grandson, Bill Steiniger.

J
ohn Bull passed away 16th April 2013.He was the founder of the United Kingdom’s Open Canoe
Sailing Group (OCSG) and leader in British canoe-sailing since 1990. He and his fellow sailors
came to Maine to sail with us in 1995 and we visited his OCSG at beautiful Lake Windermere in
England’s Lake District in 1996. It was exciting and special to meet and sailing with all of them. Bull
designed rigs and developed a group of fine canoe sailors who carry the torch today. He wrote a book
on canoe sailing, started the newsletter for OCSG which is online now. He had a special International
Trophy made for our international racing program in 1995-96.

Ralph Friese passed away Dec 10, 2012
His legacy of mentoring canoeists, setting high standards for canoeing, the outdoors, and fostering the history of
the Voyageurs are legendary. He won the ACA first Legend of Paddling Award and was an inductee into the Illinois
Outdoor Hall of Fame in 2006. Around Chicago he was known for his conservation endeavors.
A Grumman specialist who loved paddling, Ralph Friese founded and operated the famous Chicagoland Canoe
Base. Canoe sailors knew him for help with their sailing skills, getting hard to find parts to rig a Grumman sail
canoe, and setting up a rig for canoe sailing. Friese also manufactured composite re-creations of Voyageur canoes
and designed a series of modern tripping canoes. He was a serious historian of his sport, with a collection of 4,000
book titles and over 100 canoes. Mr. Friese’s collection of molds, jigs and patterns for canoes have been
preserved. Friese was active with the Chicago Maritime Museum, an unfinished work in progress.
The legendary Jan Gougeon of Bay City, Michigan, and West SYSTEM Epoxies for boat construction and repair died
in Dec. 2012: see Messing About In Boats article by Kay Harley, June 2013, page 8.
He was a boat designer, builder, a world champion competitive sailor, and innovator who shared his knowledge,
technical advice and offered EPOXY WORKS magazine as a free subscription. He worked with Hugh Horton on
Hugh’s sailing canoe design.
Jan and his brothers Meade and Joel founded Gougeon Brothers. They pioneered bonding wood and developed
techniques for metal-to-wood bonds. His work with epoxy and lightweight composites revolutionized modern
amateur boatbuilding. His 2004 PRO-SET epoxy was used on the NASA space vehicle and also the launch vehicle.
Racing iceboats and multihull sailboats were Jan’s passions
