Turkey Racing to Show that
Co-operation Works
Fredericton Area Credit Unions
The Fall of 2011 saw NBTA Credit Union,
OMISTA Credit Union and Progressive
Credit Union join forces for the second
annual Amazing Turkey Race!
The
purpose of the Race is to raise funds to
help provide turkeys for less fortunate
families all along the Upper Saint John
River Valley for the holidays.
In co-operation with Fred FM, Victory
Meat Market and area food banks, the
credit unions focus on this goal from
mid-November until mid-December.
And that focus shows. When the results
were tallied, the credit unions raised
over $13,500 in-branch.
With that
amount added to funds donated directly
at the food banks through this program,
the race total amounted to over $20,000.
Victory Meat Market was able to obtain
turkeys at an average price of $20 each,
which means that more than 1,000
families received turkeys as a result.
The Amazing Turkey Race is a great
example of what working together can
accomplish. 
Making Miracles Happen
PEI Credit Unions
Prince Edward Island credit unions
are proud to be sponsoring Ronald
McDonald House® Atlantic Canada to
help families in need of a place to stay
in Halifax while their child receives
medical treatment.
At Ronald McDonald House® families are
asked to pay a nominal fee of $11 per
night; however, no family is turned away
due to an inability to pay. The actual
operating cost for a bedroom at the
House is over $85 per night. The Adopta-Room program allows the House to
maintain a comfortable, healthy, wellkept environment for families.
Credit unions of PEI are pleased to pay
the nightly fee of $11 for credit union
members, and proud to help Ronald
McDonald House® give sick children
what they need most … their families. 

Shop Till You Drop - Cont’d from p1 —
On Saturday November 5th 2011,
staff members of Caisse populaire de
Clare went into four local grocery
stores for a promotion called Shop
Till You Drop! as a community
event for the Clare Food Bank. The
purpose of this event was to raise
public awareness of the local food
bank, and also as a fundraising effort
that saw $2,000 donated to the food
bank in food items. Caisse populaire
de Clare has raised over $16,400 in
food and cash donations in support
of the Clare Food Bank over the
past 11 years. We would like to
thank Meteghan Save Easy, Clarence
Foodland, Comeauville Freshmart
and Weymouth Value Foods for their
support with this event.
Caisse populaire de Clare believes
in the development of their local
economy and wants to help make
their
municipality
clean
and
attractive while continuing to work
together towards the financial success
of their members. 
Recreation Centre Rises
From the Ashes
Evangeline Credit Union
In April of 2010, a fire destroyed
the Evangeline Recreation Centre.
To say it was devastating is an
understatement. The facility was such
an integral part of the community
that had served over 30 years as a rink,
a gym, a canteen, festival grounds, as
well as a home away from home for
most families on those cold winter
Saturdays.
The very night of the fire a committee
was formed with strong determination
to ensure that there would be a new
Evangeline Recreation Centre. Their
2
goal became to fundraise the 1/3 of
5.6 million dollars needed to rebuild
the facility.
The Evangeline Credit Union came
forward to assist in the rebuilding
project. The credit union collected
public
pledges

$75,000 commitment over a twoyear period, Evangeline CU became

Bayview Credit Union’s Hampton
Branch raised $1,100 for the
Hampton Firefighters Christmas
Cheer Campaign which provides
Christmas for 14 families in need in
the Hampton area. To raise funds,
the branch sold paper angels and
chances to win a $100 bill; collected
for casual day; raised $100 from an
internal company-wide staff bingo
game, and held a weekly corporate
staff 50/50 draw.
Bayview’s West Branch employees
and members raised over $1,200 for
their Christmas charities. The funds
raised purchased 16 pairs of pyjamas,
36 pairs of socks and other personal
items. These items were distributed
to children in West Saint John
through the West Side Police and
Community Association (PACT). The
branch Christmas tree was decorated
with mittens, hats and socks that
members generously knit or bought.
Boxes were placed under the tree to
collect non-perishable food items.
Tree and box items then went to the
West Side Food Bank for distribution.
The branch donated $300 to the
Joshua Group and $50 to the Boys
and Girls Club. With the additional
money raised, they purchased two
complete Christmas grocery orders
for two families in the West Side.
Spring 2012 / N e w s l e t t e r
Bayview’s Oak Hall and Administration
Branches raised and donated $733 to
the Animal Rescue League, as well as
three boxes of blankets and towels.
They also raised and donated $718.40
to the Joshua Group, and $1,325.35
which allowed a family of 5 as well
as a local nursing home to experience
a very happy Christmas. Staff also
bought and donated gifts for both
the family and for Kennebec Manor
Nursing Home where many residents
have little contact with, or no family
at all. Christmas can be a very
difficult time for them, but knowing
that someone cares enough to give
them a gift can mean a great deal. For
this year’s donation, Bayview Credit
Union collected and purchased many
gifts which were delivered unwrapped
to Kennebec Manor. The Activities
Directors knew exactly who should
receive each gift.
Bayview’s Hospital Branch raised
$672.72 for the North End Food Bank
and collected a huge box of food from
staff and members.
Bayview’s Kennebecasis Valley (KV)
Branch raised over $200 for Operation
Christmas Child and used this money
to fill 16 boxes. Staff also filled their
own boxes which increased the
number to 20 boxes. The KV Branch
volunteered to be a “pick up” location
for Christmas Child boxes with over
100 boxes being taken and filled by
KV Branch members. An additional
$200 was raised for a donation to
a local needy family to purchase
groceries for Christmas dinner.
Bayview
Credit
Union’s
Sussex
Branch raised and
donated $452.50
to
the
Sussex
Sharing Club.
Bayview’s East Branch raised $3,000
for the Eastside Outreach Program
which helps provide Christmas to
local families and seniors in the East
side of Saint John. 

During the week of January 30th,
Victory Credit Union was delighted
to sponsor a series of workshops
for seven grade 8 classes entitled,
Light Up Your World at West Hants
The workshops addressed the
underlying issues of bullying and
low self-esteem.
Students were
taught how to be peer-mentors and
set goals. They learned the power of
their choices and how these have the
ability to bring positive change to
their world.
Their first workshop was entitled
“Light or Darkness,” and through a
series of games and group sessions
students received a clear message on
how simply choosing to smile each
day can create a better environment
to live in and can drastically affect
the way they feel about themselves
and others around them.
The second workshop was entitled
“Value,” and helped each student
understand that we all have immense,
incredible value, and that no one has
the right to take their value away. It
touched on false labels, and taught
them how to reject these labels and
to stand up for themselves. It also
emphasized the importance of a
positive attitude and that each one of
us has the ability to become a world
changer.
This was probably the most powerful
workshop for the students. It was
very interesting to watch them taking
part and see how their perception of
themselves and their peers changed
from beginning to end.
In the final workshop “Becoming a
World Changer,” students learned
practical tools to put in place to
become world changers. It spoke of
the importance of goal setting and
peer mentoring and how putting a
plan in place is necessary to achieve
their goals.

NL Kids Eat Smart
Public Service Credit Union
For the past 20 years, Kids Eat
Smart Foundation, Newfoundland
and Labrador has helped children
throughout the province attend
school well-nourished and ready
to learn. The Foundation, through
its Kids Eat Smart Clubs and the
contingent of volunteers who run
them, have served an estimated
five million breakfasts, snacks and
lunches to a generation of children
and youth since 1992.
The program began in response to
a need. Back in the 1980s, research
showed that children were hungry
in school.
A group of concerned
people, with support from NAPE
(Newfoundland
&
Labrador
Association of Public & Private
Employees), the credit union system,
and many others, came together and
founded the organization that would
become Kids Eat Smart Foundation.
The credit union system has been a
supporter of the Foundation since its
earliest days. Back then, it offered its
network to enable the Foundation
to reach out to communities
throughout the province.
Now
individual credit unions and Atlantic
Central are funding partners with the
Foundation.

for the Foundation, says, “All children
should have access to nutritious food
in their school community. It helps
them learn. It helps them grow. We
are both very proud and very grateful
to have achieved this milestone.
Today Kids Eat Smart kids accept the
program as part of the normal school
day. That is a credit to the work of
the founders, and to those who have
come since.”
The Foundation now supports 219
Kids Eat Smart Clubs throughout
the province, with some 20,000

Clever Cats Read!
OMISTA Credit Union
In partnership with the Moncton
Wildcats, OMISTA is the title sponsor
for the OMISTA Credit Union Reading
is Wild program. This partnership
is a 3-year commitment using the
popularity of the Moncton Wildcats
to encourage youth to read. Over the
past 13 years, thousands of students
have participated in the program
reading over 530,000 books! Four
schools in the Moncton area are
chosen to participate each year.
The program ran from November
to February, and students had a
chance to earn weekly prizes, become
Reader of the Week, and get their
photos in the newspaper. Tracking
thermometers reflecting the progress
of each school toward reaching their
reading goal were published in the
paper.
An added incentive from
OMISTA was $1 for every book
read, to a maximum of $25, was
deposited to any new Free & Easy
account opened by participating
students.
In January, all students from the
participating schools attended a
Wildcats game compliments of
OMISTA Credit Union. Winners
of the Reading is Wild program
were selected to drop the Wildcats
puck at the beginning of the
game.

Credit Unions Giving
to Save Lives
Credit unions in Atlantic Canada
have pledged to save 705 lives in
2012. That’s 235 pints of blood,
and each can save three lives.
Credit unions frequently work
together for the benefit of their
communities and are always
excited to pool their resources
in an effort to help promote
specific goals and objectives. One
such initiative is the Canadian
Blood Services Partners for Life
(PFL) Program. Because blood
donation and its life-saving result
is so important to our society,
credit unions are also committed
members of this program.
Partners pledge a specific number
of units per year, and credit union
volunteers, staff and members
alike are all encouraged to donate
to help meet the pledge.
Atlantic credit union organizations
participating in PFL include:
• Advance Savings CU
• Atlantic Central
• Bayview CU
• League Savings and Mortgage

2012: The International
Year of Co-operatives
2012 has been recognized as the
International Year of Co-operatives
(IYC) by the United Nations,
with the theme of “Co-operative
Enterprises Build a Better World”.
A series of launches all across the
country took place on Thursday,
January 12th.
The IYC is intended to raise
awareness of the invaluable
contributions
of
co-operative
enterprises to poverty reduction,
employment generation and social
integration, and to foster and
promote the formation and growth
of co-operatives. International,
national, regional and community
events will take place throughout
the year to celebrate.
One such event is the 2012
International
Summit
of
Cooperatives,
scheduled
for
October 8 to 11, 2012. At this
gathering, prominent speakers
from around the world will
present their vision and share their
expertise. The calibre of speakers
indeed sets the tone for the event
to promote “The Amazing Power of
Cooperatives.”
In Moncton this spring, a twoday conference called “Managing
the Co-operative Difference” was
held. In November, a conference is
planned for Halifax, “Co-operating
to Build a Better Nova Scotia.” 

achieve this designation must first
complete the Credit Union Director

then successfully pass a Governance
exam established and marked by

other credit unions.
Feedback
from
participants
included:
• “I was very pleased with the
entire event overall. I hope to be
able to attend future events of
this nature as it pertains to the
needs and wishes of directors.
It was easy to identify with the
topics and materials presented.
Thanks to the organizers! Also,
the opportunity to attend a

Floyd’s member and staff relationships

A reception to celebrate Floyd’s

2011 Atlantic Credit Union
Open a Great Success
During a day filled with bright
sunshine, golfers took to the links
at the 32nd Annual Atlantic Credit
Union Golf Tournament on Friday,
September 9th at the Clare Golf Club
in Comeauville, NS.
A total of 110 credit union staff,
directors and service providers
attended the event, made possible
by the generosity of 14 corporate
sponsors and many enthusiastic
volunteers. Of those attending, 84
swung their clubs to compete for the
coveted First Place Team standing.
The event saw many terrific prizes
donated and won, including an iPad
2 which was won by Connie Xidos
for the Putting Green Contest. The
putting contest itself raised $810.
Total proceeds from the tournament,
after paying all expenses, were $3,200
which was donated to the Food Banks
in the Yarmouth and Clare area.
A big Thank You to all who participated
in making it such a successful event. 
