GEORGE SAND AND THE END OF AN ERA: THE
ROMANOFF FAMILY
CECILIA ROGERS
Our looking glass now takes us to a tempestuous love story between writer George Sand and poet Alfred de
Musset, two of France's 19th century’s most headstrong Romanticists. She also sustained a decade long
romance with Chopin. The film "Children of the Century" will delight as it was an official selection at the Cannes
film Festival. FROM FRANCE TO RUSSIA with the History of "Nicholas and Alexandra", a fascinating look at the
last, tragic Russian monarchs; the kindly, indecisive Czar Nicholas and his reclusive, fear-haunted Czarina. The
story follows their problems from the onset through the introduction of Rasputin to the Russian Court, to the
Czar's abdication and the family's execution at Ekaterinburg on July 16, 1918. Accompanied by the fantastic film
production by the same name.

to create a new whole. Participants will learn the basic techniques through the making of a personal hands-on
creation using anything from photos, magazine and newspaper clippings to paint, fabric or found objects.
Instruction will provide concrete examples of works and process. With origins tracing back hundreds of years,
this technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th Century as an art form of novelty. Today, the

VIRGIL'S AENEID: TWO THOUSAND YEARS BEFORE
SERGIO LEONE AND CLINT EASTWOOD
DR LAWRENCE JOHNSON PhD
From the 1700’s to the mid-nineties, the capstone course for high school students was a year spent doing a close
reading—in Latin—of Virgil’s Aeneid. That is no longer the case, but the Aeneid still permeates our culture.
Reading it in translation will require considering around 7500 lines of poetry, but you’ll be surprised at what you
find there—and then what you can find tacitly embedded in modern works.

THE NILE RIVER'S GREAT TRAVELERS
BILL KEY
Some were courageous to the extreme, some were observant, some were on a lark, some were on a mission,
some were seeking health and truth, and some were just plain fool hardy beyond extreme. Nonetheless their
trips have left a legacy about the Nile as well as themselves. Come experience what they saw, what they did,
what they wrote, and what the banks of the Nile look like now as opposed to then. The Nile's great travelers
include Herodotus, James Bruce, Napoleon, Vivant Denon and David Robers, Florence Nightingale, and the writer
Lucy Gordon.

MARIE CURIE AND CATHERINE THE GREAT
CECILIA ROGERS
Our looking glass invites us to take a closer look at young Marie Sklodowska of Poland. She defied convention to
study physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne and – with Pierre Curie, the professor who became her
husband – to make one of the greatest breakthroughs in 20th-century science: the 1903 Nobel Prize for their
discovery of radium. We shall enjoy the film "Madame Curie" with Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon , a stirring
biopic. Next we will examine the enthralling life of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. She is a pawn in the
lethal games of court intrigue. To survive, this naïve young girl must learn to wield her court, her sex and her
empire to become Catherine the Great, the most powerful monarch in Russian history. Amazing film
presentation: "Young Catherine" with Vanessa Redgrave and Julia Ormand.
OLLI CLASS AND SCHEDULE POLICIES

 Waiting Lists: There will be waiting lists established for those classes that fill up. At the first day of
class you may attend if you are on the waiting list and there are ‘no shows’. Or you may call the
office and ask if there is room in a class.
 Class Cancellations: Classes that do not meet the minimum enrollment of 20 and not ‘make’, will
be cancelled. If a class does not make, enrollees will be notified three days prior to the start of
class.
