continue their interest in cybersecurity and proceed
to participate in CyberPatriot’s annual National Youth
Cyber Defense Competition during the school year.

2016 AFA CyberCamps
In 2009, the Air Force Association (AFA) created the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Education
Program to inspire students towards careers in cybersecurity and other science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future.
The AFA CyberCamp curriculum was designed to instruct novice students to learn about cyber ethics,
online safety, and the fundamental principles of cybersecurity.
How Do AFA CyberCamps Work?
Through the AFA CyberCamp program, schools and educational organizations can order a curriculum
kit consisting of five four-hour instruction modules, accompanying instructor’s guides, student
workbooks, demonstration software, and competition software that will teach students important skills
in cyber safety and cybersecurity. Local organizations and volunteer instructors can execute the 20hour curriculum set as a weeklong summer program supplemented by guest speakers and additional
group activities.
The camp’s 20-hour curriculum has been designed to be completed over five days (Monday through
Friday), with the fifth day serving as a “mini-cyber competition day.” Below is a list of the dates that
our 2016 camps will be available:

What organizations are eligible to request
an AFA CyberCamp kit?
AFA Chapters, public and private middle schools and high schools, home schools, Civil Air Patrol
squadrons, Naval Sea Cadet Corps units, scouting units, Boys and Girls Clubs, and pending approval
by the CyberPatriot National Commissioner, other non-profit educational organizations are encouraged
to request and host AFA CyberCamps. Additionally, higher education and career technical education
institutions may apply. National sponsors of CyberPatriot, including for-profit entities, may host AFA
CyberCamps, however the camps may not be conducted as for-profit activities.
There are no age restrictions for the student participants in the CyberCamp program, but given the
curriculum’s targeted level of difficulty, the CyberPatriot Program Office recommends camps recruit
7th-12th grade student with little to no cybersecurity experience.
Please note: The AFA CyberCamp Curriculum is aimed at improving student’s cybersecurity knowledge,
not their ability to score points in CyberPatriot competitions. The AFA CyberCamp curriculum has been
designed to best suit novice students interested in learning more about cybersecurity.
How much do AFA CyberCamp kits cost?
20-hr CyberCamp Curriculum Kit:
To recover the costs of software and curriculum development, the CyberPariot Program Office
provides access to two demonstration images and two competition images, as well as digital copies
of the curriculum materials for $1050. Hard copies and other materials are available at the following
rates, shipping included:

What other resources are required to
execute an AFA CyberCamp?
The AFA CyberCamp curriculum and activities are largely computer-based. To maximize student
engagement, the hosting school or organization should provide one computer for every 1-2 participating
campers. The camp instructor(s) will need a projector and presentation computer with MS PowerPoint.
The campers’ computers, as well as the presentation computer, must have Internet access and must
be capable of running VMWare Player, WINMD5, and 7-Zip, all of which are free software programs.
While the curriculum is designed for novice students and includes thorough notes, camp
instructors should ideally have experience working with computers, basic knowledge of
cybersecurity (or the desire to learn more about it!), and some familiarity with virtual machines.
The recommended instructor and/or volunteer ratio is 1:15.

If your school or educational organization is interested in hosting a 2016 AFA CyberCamp please visit

approved on a rolling basis.
Please Note: Registration does not guarantee approval to host an AFA CyberCamp. The CyberPatriot
Program Office will attempt to accommodate all 2016 hosting requests.
