Dane McGuirk, aka Gurks to his listeners of Hunter Valley’s Power FM has
been a regular presence in the lives of locals since landing a gig as a radio
presenter with the local station in September 2012, but officially hung up his
headphones at Power FM on 22 January.
Gurks received great accolades in the radio industry last year after winning ‘Best Newcomer on Air’
at the 25th annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards. The awards cover thirty four categories

stations. Peer-judged by a panel of fellow
industry members, the award is highly coveted
and even a nomination is a huge boost to any
radio presenter’s career, so to win it is certainly a
feather in your cap.
Originally hailing from Brisbane, Gurks studied at
Queensland University of Technology, graduating
with a Bachelor of Journalism in 2006. After
holding a number of jobs in the radio business
working for Nova
106.9 FM and Parkes
Broadcasting Company, he made the move to
Muswellbrook saying, ‘I was getting too tanned
from working on a private island in the Bahamas
for Disney.’ It’s his witty sense of humour that
is largely responsible for his popularity with
listeners. As well as hosting on air, Gurks also
acted as music director for Radio Hunter Valley,
a job he described as ‘talking into a silver stick
thingy and listening and putting music into a
computer’.
A self-proclaimed simple guy, Gurks enjoys all
things Brisbane, Will Ferrell movies and doesn’t
believe in UFOs. His favourite Upper Hunter pub
is The Railway, or anywhere with a spit roast in
the backyard and he loves meeting new people.
“We’re really sorry Gurks is leaving; he’s been
a bright start to each day. But Power listeners
can look forward to someone new and exciting
to start their day with from next month,” stated
Graham McGillivray, general manager of the
station.
Australia’s favourite day

We all know 26 January as the day marking the arrival of the First Fleet
on these shores. But Australia Day itself is a relatively new concept, not
to mention one that some argue heatedly against. Whether you love it
or hate it, the public holiday has become prominent in modern Aussie
culture and is certainly a firm favourite across the nation.
On 26 January 1788 Captain Arthur Philip and his fleet of eleven convict vessels made port
on a new land, as what we know as Sydney Cove. Although the origin of the celebrations
are next to impossible to pinpoint, some years later many sons and grandsons of the original
settlers who had prospered in this new land decided to mark the date of their arrival with
an emancipist’s festival, marking the occasion with an anniversary dinner to celebrate their
love of the land they had built a new life in. Governor Lachlan Macquarie made the day a
public holiday in 1818, with a thirty gun salute to mark the 30th anniversary of the occasion.
In 1837, amid some contention, this annual anniversary celebration was made open to only
those born in Australia.
It was not until nearly a century later, in 1935, that the term Australia Day was used by all
states and territories to mark the date. It was years later still, in 1994, when the entire nation
adopted the day as an official public holiday. And so, the day that we know as Australia Day
was finally born and has reportedly become the biggest annual civic event in the country.

Australia’s favourite day

Some argue that there are no true Australia Day traditions. The day is
marked by several prized local, state and national citizenship awards, as
well as many concerts, festivals and other events held to mark the date.
Beaches and pools fill up with revellers enjoying the day in ‘true Aussie
style’ by the water to beat the heat. Backyards fill up with family and
friends gathering around barbecues all across the nation, while seafood
sales – particularly prawns and oysters – skyrocket. Some go camping,
some stay at home with their loved ones for a quiet and relaxing day.
The Upper Hunter, Muswellbrook and Singleton shires have plenty on offer
this year, with markets, fetes, festivals, BBQ’s and more all happening
across Scone, Aberdeen, Muswellbrook, Murrurundi, Singleton, Denman,

Muswellbrook Photographic Award By Zack Phillips
From 9 March until 20 April, the Muswellbrook and District Camera Club will celebrate its 24th Muswellbrook
Photographic Award. There is no specific theme or subject for the Muswellbrook Photographic Award, but it must
not have been previously shown at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre.
An entry fee of $25 must be paid for each piece of artwork submitted, and must accompany an entry form. The artwork must be no bigger than two
metres on any side, exceed 20cm in depth or weigh any more than 25kg. All art that is on display must be available for sale.
Entries are open for this competition until 31 January 2014, and finalists will be notified on February 14. The delivery of the finalists work will be on
February 28. Judging will take place on 8 March, and later that night at 6pm, there will be an opening and presentation exhibition. This exhibition will
run until April 20, and then artists will have until May 6 to collect unsold artworks. First prize winner will win $10,000.

Local artist just loves to create

Natalie Daniels loves making things. You might know her from her day job as a cheese maker at favourite local
haunt, Hunter Belle Cheese, but Natalie Daniels, a talented local artist, says that it’s the process of making things
that gives her the most joy in life.
Natalie grew up in Nelson Bay near the water, and has many fond
memories of the ocean. Her artistic talent, however, didn’t surface until
her first year of high school, when she discovered drawing for the first
time.
be quite challenging in a good way,” she says. “Juggling my time would
definitely be the biggest challenge, and remaining balanced with all of
my responsibilities. But I love spending time in my studio, an old dairy,
working and creating art.”
“I remember having to draw a tree for homework and I was shocked at
how well it turned out,” Natalie says.
Apart from her drawings and paintings, and her day job as a cheese
maker, Natalie also makes handmade soaps, which she sells through
Hunter Belle Cheese’s café and gift shop, and is currently working to
expand her range of outlets.
“While I was in high school I attended watercolour classes with a private
art group. It was a fun time for me. I remember being the youngest one
there which made the group extra inspirational to me, and I learnt a lot
from them.”
Natalie has tried her hand at a wide range of artistic mediums, and loves
the feel of pencils both graphite and coloured, as well as watercolours
and gouache, but is also keen to hone her skills with pastels and oils. But
it’s harder, Natalie says, to choose a favourite subject, having tried her
hand to nearly everything you can think of.
“I do love to draw animals,” Natalie says. “I am a big animal lover and
my favourite times are spent with my family on the farm tending to all our
animals. They have so much character, and I love to capture that in my
own way through my illustrations.”
Having already leant her artistic touch to illustrating picture books, Natalie
has two more children’s books recently commissioned. “At present I have
been contracted to illustrate two children’s books which I am finding to

“A few years ago I was introduced into handmade soaps and as
someone who loves to make things I can’t get enough of it. I am always
reading about new techniques, wanting to find the next best scent and
learning all the benefits of certain oils and essential oils. In between, I
love to help my husband with our farm and his growing business, and
my vegie garden! I know that I will never be completely self-sufficient, but
it is something that I truly value and strive to achieve.”
“I love the process of having something and turning it into a product. I
think that is what attracted me to cheese making. The whole process
preserving milk to make cheese is truly magical and it tastes awesome
too.”
Natalie is always happy to take on commissions, and is in the process
of making a Facebook page through which everyone can contact her for
more information or to view her previous artworks. “I’ll let you know when

Arrowfield sire cracks $5million
The young Arrowfield sire, Snitzel, became the first sire for 2013-14 Australian Racing to crack the $5million mark
when three of his progeny picked
up cheques at the Magic Millions
meet at the Gold coast.
Snitzel, a former prominent Australian juvenile
and 3yo sprinter by Redoute’s Choice and
from Snippet’s Lass, has certainly proved his
mettle as a sire. Contributing to this were the
3yo fillies Sweet Idea and Estonian Princess
as the first two to reach home in the million
dollar Magic Millions Guineas over 1400m,
and Oakleigh Girl, who came in a three length
second to the aptly named Unencumbered
in the $2million Magic Millions 2yo Classic.
Of these three Sweet Idea is so far the most
successful, having raced 9 times for 4 wins,
4 seconds, one third and $1.5million to
date. She is the fourth million-dollar earner
and one of 18 stakes winners among her
fellow Snitzel progeny. With 200 – give or
take – winners already to his name, Snitzel’s
offspring are doing their dad proud. After
being put to over 200 mares in the last two
seasons, those in the industry are looking
forward to what other future winners this sire
has produced.

Beautiful investments
in the crown for the
Bowcock’s
Hunter Valley sires
dominate Sydney Classic
catalogue
In the 1940’s Ray Bowcock founded Alabama Stud,
situated in the stunning Segenhoe Valley near Scone.
Now, his grandson Andrew is expanding the family’s
empire after purchasing, along with his wife Lasca,
sire duty of the fleet-footed Beautiful Crown, as well as
establishing a new property, Alanbridge Stud.
Sires from the Hunter Valley are well represented this year in
the 480-lot Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale catalogue.
Current leading Australian sire Snitzel alone holds 8 lots,
Beautiful Crown holds 4, and Flying Spur holds three.
Beautiful Crown is now standing with another well-known name in the
industry, Arlington, at Nick Posa’s Lincoln Farm Stud near Murrurrundi.
The stallion has not had a lot of exposure himself in leading city stables,
but has produced more than 464 winners of 1400 races totalling
somewhere around $26 million dollars. Many of his offspring have been
bred in the local area and are continuing to bring good fortune to the
name of Beautiful Crown through their continuing success.
Primary vendors from this area represented through these and many other
sires are Amarina Farm, Arrowfield Stud, Edinglassie Stud, Fairview Park,
Middlebrook Valley Lodge, Sledmere Stud, Supreme Thoroughbreds
and Vinery Stud Farm, who all old over 10 lots each. Widden Stud and
Emirates Park stand way out from the rest of the pack with 33 and 42 lots
respectively. If this catalogue is anything to go by, the local thoroughbred
industry is set for good times ahead.
Many sires, including Ad Valorem, All American, Not a Single Doubt,
Onemorenomore, Street Sense and Tickets hold 12 lots each, with two
Alanbridge is also situated in the Segenhoe Valley, and is now owned stallions, Star Witness and Dane Shadow doing one better with 13 each.

Million dollar yearling with ties to the Hunter
Gai Waterhouse recently purchased a Newhaven Park Stud bred bay colt at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale on behalf of Californians Jon and Sarah Kelly, taking out the top price of $1million at the 2014 sale. But its not
just the sale price that has the industry talking, but his breeding as well. The colt has pedigree in his bones.
Sired by champion Danehill sire Redoute’s Choice from Arrowfield, he is the second foal from an Encosta de Lago (Coolmore) mare named Hades,
who herself boasts a successful track record before becoming a broodmare.
Hades’ dam, Hasna, was bred by George Altomonte, who also bred Golden Slipper winner Sebring. A very promising sire at the Widden Stud, Sebring
also brings breeding to the table, boasting ancestors also shared by the million dollar yearling, including Arrowfiels Danehill Golden Slipper winner and
champion sire, Flying Spur. His dam’s sire, Encosta de Lago, is also from a half-sister to the same stallion.
If his breeding is anything to go buy, this million dollar yearling should certainly have a successful career ahead of him.

Venture to villages for
Festival fun
It’s not only in Tamworth which has great entertainment during the
Toyota Tamworth Country Music Festival 2014 - the region’s villages
give visitors plenty of reasons to venture out of town.
Nundle will again feature a huge range of alternate country music, blues and country rock
over the 10 days of the Festival with its Nundle Rocks program.
The Peel Inn will feature Country Rock ‘n Roll legends The Re-Mains, western swing queen
Gleny Rae Virus and her Nundle Playboys, Texan Rockabilly from Alchemino’s, Gibbo and
the Fat Lambs, DOOT, Den Hanrahan, Jeremy Edwards and the Dust Radio Band. There will
be a one night only ticketed show by The Junes, with Blues legends Chris Wilson and Ian
Collard at Nundle Memorial Hall Thursday 23 January.
The Dag Sheep Station at Nundle will host to a number of country music favourites including
Norma O’Hara Murphy, Pixie Jenkins, Graham Rodger, Tom Maxwell, Alan Caswell, Marie
Hodson, Monte Good (Nashville), Amos Morris, Lou Bradley, Brad Butcher and many more.
Barraba lays claim to the `Smallest Country Music Festival’ including live music at the Victoria
Hotel and Barraba RSL Club as well as busking in the main street and an outdoor Busking
Concert on the first weekend of the Festival.
The Manilla District will host a program of events during the 2014 Festival including the 20th
annual Manilla and District Country Music Association Talent Quest to be held at the Manilla
RSL. The two-day talent quest offers over $3,500 in prizes and sees entrants from all over
Australia and even some international entrants travel from across the Tasman to compete.
The Manilla RSL Club also hosts a free program of gigs throughout the Festival including
Donella, Jamie Agius and on Australia Day you can head out to watch the Australia Day
seven-a-side cricket match followed by Johnny Taylor from 6.30pm.

Get along to the Manilla Bowling Club both weekends of the Festival to see great acts
performing including The Battlers, The Rhymer from Ryde Bush Poetry Show, Stan Coster
Tribute Show with Tracey Coster and Friends. The `Kosmik Country’ Country Music Band
rounds out the Manilla program, performing on the last weekend.

New England

To kick off the New Year, American country singing
superstar, Dolly Parton will be expanding her Australian
tour to include a show in Tamworth next month. This
will take place on Sunday February 16 at the Tamworth
Regional Entertainment Conference Centre (TRECC).

Dolly Parton started her career in song writing as a child performer. She
issued a few modestly successful singles from 1959 through to the mid
1960s. She became well known in 1967 as a featured performer on a

My Mind’ reaching the top ten hits on the country music charts.
In 1977, Parton’s single ‘Here you come again’ was a success on both
the country and pop charts. This hit was followed by a string of popcountry hits which followed into the mid 1980s, most successful being
her 1981 hit ‘9 to 5’.
Dolly Parton is well known for her country music, but has also found
fame as an actress and an author. She has published bestselling books,
Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business, Dream more and many
more. She has starred in films Unlikely Angel, 9 to 5, and family classic,
Gnomeo and Juliet.
During her career, Parton has acclaimed seven Grammy Awards, two
Academy Award nominations, ten Country Music Association Awards,
five Academy of Country awards, three American Music awards, and
is one of five female singers to win the Country Music Association
Entertainer of the Year Award.
Along with Tamworth, Dolly will be visiting various venues such as
Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and much more. Tickets go on
sale as of Friday January 17. Her new album, ‘Blue Smoke’ will be on
sale from January 31.
