On Monday 13 July Preston Manor held its
annual Prefects Assembly. Fifty students
from year 10 were chosen as prefects for
the new academic year. The students had to
write a letter of application detailing who
their role model was and why they made
such a good role model to others.
The application then had to be
countersigned by 2 members of staff who
supported their application to become a
prefect. The assembly was a wonderful
event and the year group really
demonstrated their maturity by celebrating
this achievement together. The students will
be excellent role models in the school
community next year.

The MFL Department
In April a group of year 10 students took part in a trip organised by the MFL department to Barcelona in
Spain. During the trip the students had the opportunity to practise their language skills and to learn about the
culture of this vibrant and fascinating city. Activities included visits to La Sagrada Familia (Barcelona’s
cathedral), Park Güell, Montjuic castle, and the famous Camp Nou (Barcelona football stadium). There was
also time to visit the well known street market, Las Ramblas, and to experience some local cuisine in a Tapas
restaurant.
Year 9 Trip to France
39 Year 9 students studying French took part on a day trip to Saint-Omer in
France on Friday 3 July organised by the MFL Department. Students
visited different areas of Saint-Omer and had the opportunity to speak French
in different sites, shops and cafes.

Psychology Department
As the new teacher of Psychology at Preston Manor, it has been great fun.
The students have enjoyed the interactive lessons and have developed a
real flare for the subjects. It was very exciting to see some of our very own
year 12 students representing at the Psychology taster course for the year
11s, giving them a real insight about what they’ve learnt and the expectations of the course.
Students of both years- 12 and 13- have made such excellent progress that
it makes Ms Kobel and I feel extremely proud. Well done guys!
We are really looking forward to seeing how our students have achieved for
their summer exams and even more exciting to be delivering a brand new
specification for Psychology in the new academic year.

Performing Arts Department
Performing Arts have been very busy this year. There have been numerous dance clubs taking place
every lunch time and the boys dance club performed extremely well in ALL rewards assemblies. The
boys are taking part in the Brent Dance Blast competition in July. There have been many performances throughout the year including the year 10 and 11 BTEC Performing Arts students assessment
which took place in the main hall and was a huge success. One World rehearsals have been under
way since February and students from all year groups are taking part in what will be a very high energy and show stopping performance. I would like to give a special thanks to Micah Mcleoud 10R and
Aaliyah O'Sullivan 9A for their continued hard work with running clubs for me

Debate Mate
Preston Manor has carried on its great success with their Debate Mate team this year. Not only is the club thriving with
established members from Years 8, 9 and 10, it has also picked up many regular Year 7 members too.
This year, we have had the honour of hosting the Urban Debate League heats twice in which we welcomed schools such
as Kingsbury High School and Rooks Heath to debate with our pupils for the chance of winning the Artemis Cup.
This May, we also took 2 teams of debaters to the Deutsche Bank Debate Mate Championship held at The London
School of Economics. Our debaters battled with a number of schools on the prepared topic of eco terrorism as well as
preparing to face off 2 rounds of unprepared debates on topics as diverse as plastic surgery and advertising for children.
Out of approximately 80 teams, Preston Manor B team came 8th as well as winning all of their rounds of debates. All of
Debating Club
As some of you know, 10 of our debaters took part in a London wide debating tournament today at the LSE.
There were over 80 teams present and around 30/40 odd schools there. Our teams consisted of:

Year 9 Trip to Ypres, Belgium
On 15 May 2015, sixty Year 9 students visited The Somme. This annual trip run by the History Department was a great success. Students visited Bayernwald and the Commonwealth cemeteries of Bedford
House and Tyne Cot. They also visited the Passchendaele Museum before going to Ypres. At Ypres,
Zahra Iqbal, Aliya Nsemoh and Darren Sitou represented the school in laying a wreathe of remembrance
at the Menin Gate, an event attended by several thousand people.

Religious Studies
Year 8 visit to the Jewish Museum
As part of their study of Judaism, Year 8 participate in a Torah scrolls competition, and many students produced excellent quality work. The students selected as competition were invited on a visit to the Jewish Museum in Camden to participate in a workshop about the Torah.
Year 13 visit to the British Library
In the first term, our A Level RS students visited the Sacred Texts exhibition at the British
library; this exhibition contains unique copies of scriptures from different religions. The Library
teacher led the group in discovering how and why the particular texts were made, and
considering their historical, cultural and religious significance.
Year 12 Medical Ethics workshops
A group of our AS RS students used the ‘Westminster Faith Debates’ recordings to explore medical ethics issues in greater depth. The students discussed and evaluated the views of the politicians, doctors, and faith leaders who participated in the debates. These workshops
supported the practical ethics part of the AS course, and were also useful to other Year 12
students considering a career in medicine.
Additionally, many of the GCSE, AS and A Level RS students attended extra revision classes as
they prepared for their exams; we hope that their hard-work leads to good results in August.

On Wednesday 1st July our 3 Autism Ambassadors attended a transition workshop at the Wembley
Stadium Learning Zone with BOAT (Brent Outreach for Autism Team). The ambassadors, Jordan
McDonald (11T), Mikial Jonas (8A) and Omar Diab El-Arab (8O) were involved in supporting year 6
ASD students from around the borough with their imminent transition to secondary school. All
ambassadors fulfilled their role and represented the school brilliantly. The ambassadors also took lead
roles in group work to construct the strongest bridge possible. Each student demonstrated their
aptitude with the 4 skills of the learning identity to present themselves as collaborative, resilient, active
and reflective team members and were a credit to the school.
Preston Manor Parents’ Forum
Following the first very well attended Parents’ Forum earlier this year, the Learning
Support Department held a second meeting on 21st May, Assistant Head Teacher,
Daniel Graham, gave a well received presentation on using new technologies at home
to support children’s learning. These include ‘Show my Homework’ and GCSEPod.
Other members of staff also talked about the technologies used by teachers to support
students’ learning in school.
Over tea, coffee and biscuits families present gave very positive feedback and put
forward ideas for future topics to be explored. We look forward to inviting families back
to our next Parent’s Forum after the summer holidays in the Autumn Term.

The best thing about DT was I got to make a
mirror all by myself after Mrs Rhodes guided
me through how to make it. Another amazing
thing about DT was I got to do things I never
did before like cutting wood, smoothing wood,
painting wood, cutting a mirror and gluing a mirror onto wood. My final design of making a mirror is a bird.

English Department News
Once again the English Department has had a busy and lively term, and staff have continued to
seek every opportunity to provide a varied and diverse experience for our students. At Key Stage
3, students have continued to trail blaze the new KS3 National Curriculum with immense success.
Year 7 students have enjoyed tackling pre-1914 texts “Peter Pan” or “Treasure Island” and the
analytical essays which they have produced is testament to the hard work of both teachers and
students. The Cultural Enrichment Club, led by Miss Branch, visited the Tate Modern and wrote
some very impressive creative writing about pieces of art which moved them.
Earlier this academic year we had a visit from the AQA Speaking and Listening Moderator who
was extremely impressed with the Speaking and Listening tasks our students complete during
their two year course. Congratulations to the 89% of Year 11 students who have achieved grade
A* - C in Speaking and Listening, and to the many others who achieved a ‘personal best’. We
look forward to seeing their results in August for GCSE Language and GCSE Literature.
We have had a number of Key Stage 4 trips happen this year. In December 2014 a group of 100
year 11 students braved the central line at peak hours to head to The Dominion Theatre on
Tottenham Court Road. The annual Poetry Live event hosted many of the key poets from the
AQA Anthology who spoke to students about their poetry by going into detail about their
motivations, inspirations and the use of literary devices. When teaching poetry and exploring
poetic devices students often ask questions about the poetic process that are often difficult for
teachers to answer with any degree of certainty. At Poetry Live, Students were able to obtain a
real insight about the poems they have studied directly from the poets themselves. At the event
students were moved, entertained and brought out of their seats by poets such as Gillian Clarke
and Carol Ann Duffy, Grace Nichols, Simon Armitage and the ever energetic John Agard.
Students also had a lecture from a chief examiner giving them inside information to help them
with the Unit 2 Poetry exam. The students found the event a valuable experience and were
excellent ambassadors of the school. Thanks to Miss Clarke for co-ordinating this trip.
Furthermore, we also Miss Khan take a group of Year 11 English enthusiasts attend John Lyon
school in Harrow for a day of Dystopian literature and these students came back with a renewed
passion for choosing Literature in Sixth Form.
The star of the extra-curricular programme has been the debating club, led by Ms Kerai, who
recently came 8th out of 80 schools in a Debate Mate competition. Thank you to Ms Kerai for the
time put in to the debating club’s continuing success.
Lastly it is with great sadness that we say goodbye to three members of our staff this term: Miss
Clarke, Miss Prince and Miss Branch are moving on, and they leave with the gratitude and best
wishes of staff and students.

MUSIC AND PERFORMAING ARTS
On Thursday 11th June it was announced that the
Music Department of Preston Manor School was
one of eight schools in the capital winning the
Mayor of London’s prestigious Music Excellence in
School’s Award for 2015. Mr. Crawley (Director of
Music/Head of Performing Arts) attended an
awards ceremony at the Roundhouse which was
hosted by Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London
and featured Ray Davies (of British band ‘The
Kinks’ fame) and composer of many hit west end
musicals Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
July saw Preston Manor’s students performing at Apple’s
education conference held at Brent’s Civic Centre. Students Kenny Mpanga, Alex Kempson, Joseph McGovern
and Gustavo Da Silva performed a range of music including an original dance music piece from Kenny, a song
from Gustavo and Joseph and Alex’s progressive rock
inspired composition for synthesiser and electric guitar. In
the hot weather performing on the balcony outside ‘the
drum’ overlooking Wembley Stadium and the rest of the
borough provided a welcome change of scenery and
temperature.
Other examples of Preston Manor’s musical talent may
now also be found on Sir Paul McCartney’s Meet Free
Monday website which showcases our work for this
worthwhile cause. Please follow the link to listen the music.
http://www.meatfreemondays.com/student-work/meat-free-monday-music/
On Saturday 4th July the Music Academy held its annual Summer Concert which featured the usual range
of solo items including a Rachmaninov Prelude, Eric Satie’s Gnossienne No 1 and Gymnopedie No 2. The
orchestra perfromed a suite of themes from the current televsion version of ‘Sherlock’. The concert closed
with the combined forces of the orchestra, junior and senior choirs peforming the gospel classic ‘Oh Happy
Day’.

P E Department
Preston Manor has had an extremely successful year in sport, competing in many Brent Cup finals and
building on the success of last year. One of our successful Brent Cup victories came from our Year 10
Girls Football team On the 13th May, Preston Manor competed in the Brent League Championships.
Preston Manor got off to a flying start beating Queens Park 2-0 with goals from Nicole and Tori and some
superb defending from KJ and Bridget. They then narrowly lost to Ark Academy in the final group stage
match, with a late minute goal. This left Preston Manor to face Ark in the final of the Brent Cup.
A really tense affair saw neither side create many chances, with the most clear cut coming from a Gertrude long throw, Lucia narrowly missing out at the back post. More solid defending from both sides, in
particular Bridget at the back for Preston Manor saw the scores level at full time.
Extra time ensued, Tori came within a whisker of heading the ball in from another excellent Nicole corner.
At the other end, Amy made a spectacular save in the final seconds to tip a certain goal into the bar.
Penalties it was.
Ark scored first, Nicole replied with a calm bottom corner finish. Amy then made a superb stop, KJ slotted
home Preston Manor’s 2nd. Amy then made another outstanding stop to really put the pressure on Ark.
Lucia calmly slotted home Preston Manor’s 3rd leaving Amy to make another brilliant save and crown
Preston Manor CHAMPIONS!!!!
All the girls were an absolute credit to the school and worked tirelessly for each other on what was a really
hot day. Player of the match must go to Amy for her superb penalty saves in the final, but all the team
deserve credit for their hard work and commitment all year.
The PE/Sport newsletter is due out next week with lots more stories of success from what has been a
great year of sport at Preston Manor!
