It’s a ‘Z’ or is it?
For some while I had thought about building a special. I’m not an engineer or have
access to complicated engineering equipment so I would leave the radical specials to the
Woodcock’s and Coker’s of this world.
While I’m a big fan of the technically superior Prolink the twin shock Z & A models are
stunning looking bikes. So I decided to take a Z and make a number of improvements with
the objective that the final bike will still have the good looks of the twin shock models. I
started with the front end. I bought the front end of an early GSXR 1100. Why this model
– well it has big brakes to improve the stopping power and bigger forks. It also does not
have upside down forks so the Z look will be retained. I used a hydraulic press to remove
the stem from the bottom yoke and replaced it with a Z one. The forks then bolted
straight into the Z frame. Forks and callipers were then painted black – as per Z.
The next challenge was to attach Z clocks and head lamp to the Suzuki forks. This turned
out to be very time consuming and tested the patience’s but I eventually settled on
making alloy brackets to hold the top of the clocks and the small top hat rubbers. Loads
of templates and cutting and filing of alloy sheets produced the end product. As I wanted
handlebars rather than clip on’s an aftermarket alloy top yoke was purchased onto which
I fitted GSX 1400 handle bars and mirrors. Indicators are Suzuki. The next stage was the
engine. It had to be the ‘better technically’ Prolink together with Prolink carbs and oil
cooler. It also had to be silver – as per Z. So the engine was salt blasted and sprayed silver.
Dyna coils and ignition were added together with iridium plugs. A high powered TIM’s
starter motor replaced the standard one. Onto the back end. A Metmachez swinging arm
took the GSXR rear wheel. Next problem – I had a Suzuki rear wheel sprocket and a Prolink
front sprocket – different pitches. So I had a rear sprocket made that fitted the Suzuki
wheel but with the 530 Honda pitch. A laser beam down the two sprockets to line them
up showed I needed to play around with different wheel spacers. The tyres on the Suzuki
wheels are 160/60 on the rear and 120/70 on the front - not too big but big enough to
put more rubber on the road than the 140/70 and 100/90 that were on the bike.
The FVQ rear dampers were retained but to improve them a set of Koni springs was fitted.
A new wiring harness was purchased. Next problem was where I was going to put the
fuse box that normally sits on the Z top yoke. No provision on the Suzuki so it had to be
relocated onto the inside of the battery box door.
6
CBX RIDER
A smaller sized Gel battery was fitted
to make room for the new blade Fuse
box. Now onto the paint colour. I own
a dark red Blackbird which I love the
colour so I knew that was what I wanted
for this bike and it’s not a million miles
away from the Cherry Candy Red Z. The
side panels had to be red also – I never
understood why Honda painted them
black. So the Suzuki front mudguard,
tank, side panels and rear tail piece were
all to be deep crimson red.
The bike was completely dismantled
and frame and black parts painted. A bit
of extra chrome added, engine hangers,
clutch cover etc. Lots of bits and pieces
such as rebushing the gear linkage and
made to measure brake hoses. A shaped
seated was added to improve the looks
and a new ‘standard’ exhaust system
fitted. So the end product was a CBX
that looks like a twin Shock Z but with
key areas improved. I may be slightly
biased but I think it’s come out OK.
Jeff Coker, who has build a couple of
very high quality specials, gave me an
enormous amount of guidance with this
project – I would like a pound for every
time he took a sharp intake of breath
followed by ‘’I wouldn’t be doing that’’
which made me change direction – so a
big thanks to Jeff for his guidance and he
was responsible for all the paintwork.

Mr Caroll’s Mallory Experience Part 2
I had only recently finished rebuilding my CBX after shearing the splines
in the single sided swing arm at Mallory Park last year. The weekend
before Mallory was spent on a shakedown run to Box Hill checking that
nothing would fall off as I had been involved in putting it back together
over the past few months.
The ride up to Leicestershire with Gazza had been uneventful and we
stopped at a lovely cafe somewhere ‘oop’ north for some breakfast
before the last push to Mallory. It was jolly hot on the way up and by the
time we got there I was sweating like a nun in a Turkish bath. I got my
bike scrutinised and was amazed nothing had come off in their hands as
they were pulling it about.
Luckily I had help with the re-assembly by Jeff Coker and Steve Courtney
so I knew it would have gone back together properly. While the single
sided swing arm was off I had decided to take the whole bike apart to
get the frame powder coated and give my CBX a well deserved overhaul.
Grumpy had taken my disgustingly dirty engine complete with all the
ancillaries still attached and with 32 years of unwashed grime, oil and
crud and took it apart before sending it off for soda blasting. When it
came back Jeff’s gang at Coker & Sons gave it a total respray in two-pack
black.
When the engine came back it was so clean and shiny it brought a little
tear to my eye... although it was really Grumpy squeezing my gonads and
telling me to wash the bloody thing once in a while. Grumpy had also
sent my frame to be powder coated in silver ‘cos he knows the people
best to do that stuff’.
When I had taken the bike apart I had dismantled the Showa shock and
when I had all the bits laid out on the floor I found a little notice which
said ‘DO NOT DISMANTLE THIS SHOCK’ ...oops! Looking through the
interweb thing I found a new VFR shock for my bike was £800!
Luckily, HM Racing in Edenbridge said leave it with them and they will try
and put it back together. And they did with new seals and a new yellow
spring to match my bike for £150. Top blokes.
10
CBX RIDER
They also sent my front forks off to be anodised in gold. The Rainman
then came to my garage and while he re-assembled the CBX I handed
him spanners and cups of tea like a good monkey and tried not to get
in his way. I had lost the bolt which goes through the top of the shock
which halted the rebuild a tad. I ordered one through John Froude at
Hartgate Honda. £15 for ONE bolt? I nearly fainted.
When Rainman found out two collets for the exhaust, 8 various nuts and
bolts were missing, and the special bolts that hold the sprocket cover on
were also missing he was not a happy bunny.
A quick trip to Grumpy’s parts emporium resulted in a haul of the missing
parts I needed and with Rainman and Grumpy’s patience and hard work
we got my CBX back together. And it was so clean and shiny! I couldn’t
wait to get out on it and give it the beans. I also put new oil and filter in
as it had been a long long time since it had been done.
The last session, number 32, at Mallory and my CBX was out on the track
giving it large with Carl Woodcock only passing me on four occasions.
Unfortunately as I came around the hairpin leaning over to the right my
exhaust collector dug into the ground and separated the pipes. Earlier on
Alan Fisher had been bouncing around on the track using his own body
as a rubber ball ….again.
This time however he had not landed on his face thus saving himself
serious injury. I think my collector hit the lump in the ground caused
by Alan’s face last year. This time poor Allan had been trying to keep up
with James and had fallen off breaking his thighbone or popping a hip or
something, as he’s very old. People have started calling him ‘Tigger’ but
I can’t understand why?
Hope you get better soon Tigger. Pipe and slippers for you old man... can
I have your Moto Martin? I didn’t like to ask you while you were being
carried to the ambulance in case you thought I was being insensitive.
Me! Insensitive? Never.
I will tell you about the caravan thief next time.

To Buy or not to Buy
Having owned several pro-links over the
years, all silver grey, and comparing
the grey ones to the pearl white I
decided, I prefer the look of the
white ones.
About 18 months ago I had the
opportunity to buy a complete
set of white bodywork, which
included the panniers and frames,
the right hand side pannier was
damaged but since have managed to
acquire another one. I bought all this
with a view of changing a grey one
to white.
Last October I saw a posting on
the CBX Forum “mint silver grey
Prolink”. I decided I would try
to buy it. After a few enquiries
I found out it was in Scotland. I
spoke to the guy who owned it and
agreed a price over the phone.
Club member Paul Bennets kindly
offered to take me and bring the
bike back in his van, a round trip
of some 550 miles. Paul and I set
of to Scotland to fetch it. When
I saw the bike I was bitterly
disappointed, it was certainly not
‘mint’ but effort, time and moneywhat do I do? So I decided to go
with it.
14
CBX RIDER
On the plus side the seller had put some nice
after market extras on it; Corbin seat,
Dyna coils/ignition, tall screen,
temperature gauge, oil gauge,
progressive suspension unit,
Taylor plug leads, Earls oil cooler
lines, chrome rack. He also
included a few spares and some
bodywork, to my amazement
although the bike was grey, the
spare body parts where white and
in very good condition. The front and
rear mudguards, side panels, tail piece,
grab handle back plates, all in better
condition than the ones I already
had.
Between the bodywork I already
had and what I got in Scotland
I have been able to convert the
grey pro-link into a very nice
pearl white one.
With the bike home I completely
stripped it down to the frame, only to
find rust and grime. The so-called
‘mint’ exhausts, one had a small
rust hole in it, the other had a
gouge in it, and the front down
pipes where tarnished.
Next job I decided was to
get, battery box, centre stand,
side stand, clutch housing cover,
number plate carrier and various
other small parts, powder coated.
WINTER 2013
... continued overleaf
15
I cleaned and repainted the engine, polished the
cam cover and all small alloy parts and
got everything ready to re assemble it.
With the carbs cleaned and tops
polished I decided to remove the
fuel line diaphragm, all previous
pro-links have been a pain to start
from cold. There are two intakes
on the pro-link carbs so I got a
single tap that has two outlets on it,
but this particular tap has no reserve
position on it, got it wrong again! so will
have to watch the fuel content.
I have always fancied having higher
handlebars, so I decided I would
go with it, keeping the original
switchgear. Having lengthened the
throttle cables, choke and clutch
cables, with the bodywork fitted,
the throttle cables were hitting
the fairing. I retired to the bungalow
to cry, and think what to do next. After
some thinking I decided to route the
throttle cables to the left hand side of
the frame ‘it worked’ (joy).
All in this entire project was a
lot of work and expense, mainly
because I believed the advert on
the forum.
As the old saying goes ‘buyer
beware’.

WINTER 2013
19
Sunday Again lots of
CBX Members came
to say hello and have
a cuppa.
As on the Saturday
the public showed a
lot of interest in the
CBX’s and there was
not a time that we
were not surrounded
by the public looking
and taking photo’s
of the bikes. One of the officials of the Show came to the Stand and
said that the CRC CBX had won the Best Street Bike Award and put a
Rosette and an award sign on the CBX, which was incidentally on the
Club Stand Stage.
A little later another official came along and gave me 15 rosettes and
an award sign for our stand had won 3rd place in Club Stand Category.
When the time came
off we went to collect
the awards Best Street
Bike Award was called
but in the name of Steve
Golding but we knew
it was Marks that had
won there had been a
mix up somehow. I sent
Will (Marks friend) up
to collect the award and
said I would sort it out later. Then came our Club’s turn I went up to
collect the award from Christian Sarron. I mentioned to him that I had
seen him racing at Mallory Park in the good old days. He said oh yes I
remember waving to you as I went around on my victory lap. He had a
good sense of humour.
20
CBX RIDER
When I got back to
the stand I found
out what the mix up
was. Someone had
moved Steve’s name
and info sheet from
the front wheel of
his CBX and put it in
front of the stage that
the CRC CBX was on
so right bike wrong
name Steve Golding
understood the mix up.
So all was well with the world I
would like to take this opportunity
to say a Big Thank You to those that
took the time to bring along their
CBX’s for the Show Stand and to all
the helpers who manned the stand
and helped to build it up and break
it down.
See you soon.

LYNNE AND THE RALLY TEAM
Choc’s CBX Re-build
Hi CBX’ers
It started when I had a go on Dave
Whelan’s beautiful red Z. That was it, I started
looking around for a Z, one came up on ebay (yes
with a buy it now) in Leeds, it was not what I exactly
wanted but it was a 1978 Z. I kept watching it, and
then my wife turned around and said just buy it. I
had been looking forward to picking it up, so Dave
and I set off with the trailer. When we got there we
started the engine up, she sounded really good, but
the down side was the engine had been painted
with a black tar brush. The paint job was a John
Grogesky American job 1980’s? We inspected the
bike, and had a good look round it for faults, Then the
owner offered to take me out on the back for a spin,
all seemed great to me, the deal was done, I was the
owner of my first CBX. I explained to the owner I
was going to take her back to the original as much
as possible (he seemed gob smacked when I told him
this). We loaded the bike onto the trailer, secured
her down, and off we went on our merry way back
home. On the way home I explained to Dave what
I was planning to do, he said give me a shout and
I will help you with it. (One in a million mate). So
when I got her home I washed and cleaned her (lol)
then took her out for her maiden voyage. After a few
days I started to make a list, what I needed to keep
and what I needed to replace. I started to look on
ebay and various other places. I started to buy some
of the items on my list and store them safely in my
garage, and then I started stripping and cleaning the
parts I was going to keep, to see what lay beneath
the grime.
No. 1
Fairings with twin headlamps, belly pan, the brackets
and spacers were made of bits of wood (yes you read
correct bits of wood), nuts, bolt washers were a right
miss match of oddments.
No. 2
Forks were not Z’s, but it had Prolink top and bottom
yokes, the forks were devoid of any oil, the allen
bolts were cross threaded, and 2 coins on top of the
28
CBX RIDER
fork springs (if the coins had been £1 coins not too
bad but were only ten pence pieces, when’s my luck
going to change with this CBX).
No. 3
Swinging arm was a Metchamex alloy item, with
Astralight wheels on. Dave had arrived that weekend
to help. Dave was taking parts off with my tools,
i.e. ratchet with no ratchet in, and was not working
properly, tools, spanners, sockets lying all over the
place, screwdrivers not fit for purpose. After a chat
with Dave he said throw all your so called tools in
the bin, or words to that effect, which we cannot
print, you know what I mean. The next visit Dave
turned up with a very large toolbox, socket set etc.,
etc., and I am still using them today, cheers mate.
No. 4
The next job was to take the engine out, Dave and
I started to strip down parts, so we could get the
engine out of the frame. Dave did the work and I
made a list in which order the parts came off. He
knows his stuff does Mr. Whelan, after some time it
was out and onto the trolley we had. “Another long
day”. The next job was to strip the existing paint off
the engine, lots of elbow grease and nitro morse,
wire brusher’s, and lots more elbow grease. Next job
in the pipeline was the frame.
No. 5
I started to take as much paint off as I could; the
frame was a burnt orange/red colour, also the
handlebars were the same colour. After a lot of hard
graft the frame and handlebars are ready for powder
coating, now winging its way to Kingsbury Road,
Birmingham. Oops, big cock up forgot to take the
VIN plate off the frame before shot blasting.
No. 6
Now the tricky bit the carbs. Dave helped me again to
take off the carbs, throttle cables, choke cable etc., etc.
Next step nitro morse, and yes you guessed it more
elbow grease. Float bowls off, carb tops off, and taken
to Bedders Polisher’s at Hospital Street Birmingham.
Dave left me to finish off (more later). No. 7
Went to collect the frame, handle bars, battery box,
etc., etc., from the powder coaters, great job done

by Steve thanks. Dave back again helping out, what
to seek out next, and tries to find everything that
has been stored, let’s have a cup of tea and think.
1st thing on the agenda show Dave the engine, is it
ready to spray I’m afraid not. Oops, Dave showed me
all the bits I had missed, you know what’s coming
next more elbow grease and more nitro morse, after
more nitro morse more elbow grease and more wire
brushing the motors ready to paint. The sun was out
aerosol’s at the ready, we were going to use Simoniz 5
wheel silver, after taking the engine to the back of the
garage and applying the Simoniz we left it to dry. On
inspection later what a job Dave had done, spot on,
well done Dave.
Next step starting to put everything back on the
frame, new wiring harness went on first, then the
wheels acquired from Phil Mace, an original swinging
arm. The bike was suspended to the rafters so we put
the forks on. All ready for the engine now. (It’s the
know how that counts). Dave and I dig the engine
out from the back of the garage, and start to sort
the carbs to fit back onto the engine. With the airbox
already in position, we positioned the engine on
the trolley jack ready to be lifted into place, slowly
we jacked the engine up towards the air box. Bingo!
Fitted straight into position first time, now it was
my job to tighten the clips that hold the carbs onto
the engine, also the air filter box. I must say myself
it looks brilliant. Next step line up the swinging arm
and fit onto the frame, all going smoothly. Now ready
to fit the standard shocks I bought from ebay (USA),
I was really pleased with myself on acquiring these
shocks but Dave brought me crashing back down to
earth when he said they were shit then and they’re
still shit now, so he persuaded me to fit the ones that
came with the bike, fully adjustable items. Dave said
store them in the bottom of your shed which I have
done. Next to fit was the footrest hangers, and gear
lever I won on ebay (USA).
No. 8
Another part that was very hard to get hold of was
the standard h4 headlamp and stays, losing out a
couple of times on ebay, I thought to my self the next
time the parts come up I am not going to lose out,
so I put a ridiculous bid in for the next one’s and won
them.

No. 9
The first set of Comstars were not great so I searched for a replacement set and found a set and
purchased them from Phil Mace. After buying the 2nd set of wheels decided to fit them myself, in
doing so crushed the speedo drive oops.
No. 10
Won a lot of the gear needed on ebay UK and ebay USA, took a while to find the air box but won
this one when it came on ebay, carb rubbers and clips easy to find from David Silver spares, and got
5% discount in the bargain.
No. 11
Dave checked and repaired the clocks, new headlamp, and indicators acquired from ebay USA. The
indicators needed extra wires on Dave sorted them out for me; he also sorted the rest of the wiring
on the bike. Cheers.
No. 12
Tank, front mudguard off Dave Whelan, side panels,
tail piece aftermarket items from Coventry, resprayed
by Rob Whelan, he also said bring your old tail piece
up and I will spray that for you as well, I explained to
him it was full of filler and cracked and chipped don’t
worry he said I will sort it, what a perfect job perfect
match (candy apple red) to the tank and mudguard,
another piece of the jigsaw finished, Cheers Rob.
No. 13
All re assembled and ready to put the key in and fire
her up, key inserted press the start button and bingo
she fired up first time, even quicker was the petrol
that flowed across my garage floor! Dave quickly
switched the petrol off and started to inspect the
carbs, oops somebody had forgotten to nip the float
bowls up, I held my hand up I should have checked.
By this time the air had turned blue, and I made a
hasty retreat and put the kettle on. By the time the
tea was made Dave had calmed down a bit. He tried
every way possible to tighten the float bowl screws,
without having to take the exhausts off, air filter, tilt
the engine forward etc. etc. the inevitable happened, we had to take the bike to bits again to get at
them pesky screws that somebody forgot to nip up oop’s. We eventually had to take the carbs off,
as we suspected float bowls only finger tight also a rubber gasket wasn’t seated correctly. Dave did
mention that he had left me to tighten those up and seat the gasket; I am going to lock those tools
away from you in future, or words to that effect, (the air was blue again). After many more hours or
it felt like many more hours the bike was ready to start again, hallelujah. Dave went over the bike
with a fine toothcomb, no leaks no noises, it was done - the end.
Thanks to Dave Whelan and Rob Whelan - without their help and knowledge this rebuild would
never have got off the ground. Paul Henn

Sorting out an Oil Burner
I know these CBX’s can burn some oil and give off a bit of smoke
but Paul Nolan’s Pro-link on the way to Switzerland had Neil
and I a little concerned. It wasn’t just the smoke and sore
throats we were suffering from it was the red glow and
flames from the oil burning in the hot exhaust that
we found alarming, these things were supposed to
sound like a Phantom jet at take off, not actually go
into reheat. So I thought I would write and send in the
shopping list of bits required in case you are also fed up
with pouring gallons of oil into your CBX.
We dropped the engine and took it to my garage so I could
work on it in the evenings when the family had gone to bed,
that way I got slightly less grief about spending all my time doing
CBX things. A top end strip and rebuild, nothing too complicated, just
enough to stop it drinking all that black stuff. We used original
Honda rings and honed the barrels vigorously, replaced valve
guide seals and reground the valves. Replaced both cam
chains. There was so much
Gasket set
£89 slack in cam chain B it
worn the tensioner
Piston rings £220 had
beyond use and most
Cam chain A
£49 of it was stuck to the
oil strainer in the sump
Cam chain B
£58 so a NOS tensioner was
Tensioner B £151 sourced from Louis at Used
CBX parts, thank goodness
the pound is quite strong. Incidentally through a previous
owners mishap there was a very neat impression of a screw in
the top of no 2 piston so well imprinted you could almost tell what
pitch the thread was.
A soft link was used for cam chain “A” resisting the
temptation to batter it flat out of the worry of it coming
undone. Replaced generator brushes while we were at
it and topping of the bill with filter, oil and various
other gaskets and sundries the final cost was £750. So
if your engine is burning a bit of oil you might like
to just hand out a few throat sweets to those riding
behind you. The engine now sounds lovely and quiet,
only time will tell if the demand for crude will go down, I
only hope I have battered that soft link enough.

Tech Tip from Alan (Ironside) Fisher
Starting and Charging
Lots have been said on this subject, but these are my opinions.
Battery: It does not matter what size battery you fit, a 12v battery
is a 12v battery, as long as your charging system is in good
condition it just means the more you take out of a
larger battery, the longer it will take to re charge. If
any of you have had the AA/RAC out to your car or
van you may have seen them use a small `jump
pack` to start a vehicle with a flat battery, they
will start large vans easily. The battery in these
packs fits almost perfectly into a CBX with very
little adjustments, as it is designed to be run to
dead flat then recharged to full, day in day out, it
is perfect for bikes with occasional usage, they are
also used in motability machines and golf carts, they
cost about a 1/3rd of the price of the topline batteries
available but they are quite heavy. [I connect my optimate
up with a 7-day timer, and set it to charge for 1 day a week].
