I think you will agree that it’s going to be a great year at Stockton Civic Theatre.
I love On Golden Pond, maybe because I am getting to the age where I really understand it! It is truly humorous and heartfelt, and the movie starring Katharine Hepburn
and Henry Fonda really made the play accessible to everyone. Richard Garvin has
assembled a fine cast including Sherry Dumos and Dalin Nelson who are making their
SCT debut, and several faces you will recognize and gladly welcome back to our stage,
Rocky Rhoades, back after too long an absence from our family. We welcome them all!
Thank you for supporting Stockton Civic Theatre!

DIRECTOR’S NOTES
by Richard Garvin
O
n Golden Pond is a play about “family” and all the baggage
that goes along with it. It is sweet and though provoking –
sometimes uncomfortable, and will most certainly bring a tear to
your eye and will undoubtedly make you laugh out loud. When I
first saw the film, I was at the Pacific Conservatory of Performing
Arts in Santa Maria, CA studying acting. I was young and away from home for the first
time and it had a powerfully emotional effect on me. Since that time I have been fortunate enough to see two professional stage productions. A family dynamic is often like a
battlefield, creating walking wounded who spend entire lifetimes wondering why and/or
trying (or not) to fix something that did or did not happen. For whatever reason we are
sometimes scarred as children– and as we mature we find ourselves with emotional holes
that continue to grow throughout our lives. If these holes are not filled before we become
adults, that part of us will never grow up and will affect and haunt us throughout our
days. I have such a hole that I have been trying to fill for the last 40 years. It has had a
profound effect on my life, my decisions, my relationships. Having the opportunity to
work on this play has given me cause to think about my “hole” and what I might need to
do to fill it. I think that the best way to “survive” our dysfunctional family dynamics is to
embrace a “Life Is Short” attitude and decide if we want to survive and grow, or succumb
and die. It is important to realize that our parents did what they knew how to do and
couldn’t or wouldn’t make the necessary changes needed to keep the holes from starting
or filling them when they did. One of the hardest things for adults to do is embrace and
forgive the bad (or perceived bad) things in their childhoods.
I could not feel more fortunate than to have the wonderful cast of players bringing
these characters to life. Unlike the movie, which is very sad, the play has a lot of laughter
and joy, as well as emotion and tears.
In addition to my wonderful cast, I would very much like to thank everyone who
worked so hard to put this play on its feet. As they say, it takes a village to raise a play!
Thank you all of the technicians – light, sound, stage, the people who donated the trees,
the front of house – ushers, box office, concessions, house manager, the construction crew
who worked so tirelessly with Brian Johnson to bring our pond to life, costumes, props –
and of course, the audience. I am lucky as a director to have such a wonderful production
team who has been with me for several shows now. My long suffering stage manager, Edie
Nayer, my wife Liz Kastner-Garvin who does my costumes, Brian Johnson who is the best
set designer I have ever had, Putsy Lew-Hong who scours the city for just the right prop,
and thanks to Jim Coleman for bringing the play to SCT and giving me the opportunity
to bring it to life. I also want to give a special thank you to my Assistant Director, Shawn
Carrington, who did such a wonderful job and had really terrific instincts.
This play has a way of bringing all of the baggage to the center of the stage and airing
the dirty laundry. It is touching and sometimes uncomfortable but it will make you think,
it may make you cry, and I certainly hope that it makes you laugh. So bring your shovel
and start to fill in your holes before it’s too late. Welcome to On Golden Pond.

Angry Housewives. In Lodi he appeared on
the Tokay Players stage in True West.
Jennifer Nelson-Burgher – Chelsea
Thayer Wayne

recently in this season’s Dearly Beloved.
Earlier theatre experiences came while at
Stagg High School, Delta College, and
Chico State in such productions as Fiddler
on the Roof, Flower Drum Song, and Guys
and Dolls. A realtor with Lela Nelson Realty,
Jennifer enjoys exploring alternative healing

Meet the Staff
Richard Garvin – Director
See Cast Bio.
Shawn Carrington – Assistant
Director
A drama director at Alan
Short Center, Shawn has
performed in numerous
SCT productions, his
first being You Can’t
Take It With You in
1994, and the latest 42nd Street. Other
shows include The Piano Lesson, Fences, La
Cage Aux Folles, The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild, Annie Get Your Gun, and The
Full Monty. He earned Willie Awards for his
performances in The Piano Lesson and
Fences. Shawn will be making his directing
debut next season with Lend Me a Tenor.
Brian Johnson – Set Designer/
Scenic Artist
Brian began his SCT
affiliation with performing roles in Nunsensations and Wait Until
Dark, then moved on to
scenic design. He has
received Willie Awards for designs of
Cinderella and Run for Your Wife. He
designed last season’s 42nd Street and this
season’s Hairspray. He earned high praises
and a special Willie for his use of mixed
media-live action, video and recorded sound
in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat. Brian is a licensed contractor
whose work can be seen at Johnson Custom
Painting.com.
Special Dedication from Brian:
“During the building of this season’s Hairspray
set, my loving grandma, Barbara Harmon
Johnson, passed away. She was an amazing
artist, and I grew up seeing her drawings and
watercolor paintings on the walls of our home
and in the mountain cabin my folks owned. She
truly inspired me. I would see her sit and
draw… simple lines that slowly took form into
beautiful pictures that ended up framed and
admired forever. I know she did other things in
life, but for me growing up, her “occupation”
was artist. That’s what she did… and that’s
what I wanted to do. Her and my grandpa’s
love of the outdoors had the family exploring the
wilderness as soon as their children could walk.
My dad then carried it on with our family, giving me an understanding and appreciation of
the world beyond asphalt and track homes.
Designing the setting for Golden Pond reminds
me of the wonderful times I spent at the cabin or
in the forest with Grandma and the rest of the
family, so I wish to dedicate this set to her, and
those wonderful memories. May we all be blessed
to have time to spend with those we love.”
Hugh Litfin – Lighting Design
Hugh is returning to
SCT, this time as lighting designer. His last
work here was as co-scenic designer for You’re a
Good Man Charlie
Brown, for which he received a Willie nomination. This was Hugh’s third production of
Charlie Brown, his first in 1979. He works as
a director of photography for film and television and as a lighting and scenic designer for
the theatre. He teaches film production at
the Academy of Art University and lives in
Lodi with his family.
Edie Nayer – Stage Manager
Ironically, Edie’s first
involvement with SCT
was in the 1985 production of On Golden Pond.
She has come full circle
now with the current
production. In between
she has been very busy with SCT, performing in Stepping Out, Christmas Carol, and
Once Upon a Mattress. She directed It Had
to Be You, and has been assistant director for
six other shows. In addition, she has been
stage manager for several shows, as well as
serving as deck manager and working the
light and sound boards. She was editor of the
theatre’s programs for 6 years. Her work has
earned her both the Dora Belle Howard
Award and the Layne Fields Award. Now
retired, she taught for 36 years at Franklin
High School.
Liz Kastner-Garvin – Costumer
Liz started with SCT as a
“techie” in 1993. Since
then, she has taken on
almost every job including stage manager, production manager, lights,
spots and props, and
costume design. She was nominated for a
Willie Award for her costume designs for
Run For Your Wife. She has also performed
onstage in Lil Abner, The Miser, The Children’s Hour, and most recently Dearly
Beloved. With her husband Richard, she
entertains a menagerie of three dogs, two
cats, and a bearded dragon.
Mark Sorenson – Scenic Artist
Mark has worked on numerous shows with
set construction and scenic art including
Cinderella, Annie Get Your Gun, Dearly
Departed, 42nd Street and Annie, Jr. An art
graduate from Sacramento State, he is an inhouse artist for Trader Joe’s. He thanks Brian
Johnson for giving him the opportunity to
work with him again and learn “the tricks.”
