Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
If you have not yet returned your registration for next year, time is running out. There are some
classes (1, 4, 5, and 6) that are nearing their capacity! I would hate for any of our returning families to
get shut out of a class or classes. We have paperwork in the office if you need it. Also know that we
have contacted the covenant parishes and asked about the progress of tuition assistance and they are
working on it – as are we. Please do not let finances be the reason you have not registered yet! And,
if you know of anyone looking for a place to send their children to school, please let them know about
St. Nicholas, we are still accepting registrations.
FYI – we will be dismissing early on the last day of school, Wednesday, May 27! Our school day
will end at 11:00am that day and we ask that you please make whatever arrangements that need to be
made for pickup. THE BUSSES WILL NOT BE BRINGING THE CHILDREN HOME THAT
DAY! The busses will operate in the morning, but we cannot arrange early pickup because the other
districts are still in school also. Transportation arrangements will need to be made for ALL students to
get home on the last day of school. There will also be NO LUNCH served that day so please send a
snack that can easily be eaten in the classroom.
Thanks to the generosity of our St. Nicholas community, we were able to raise over $1,100 for the
Sisters of Notre Dame Clean Water Project. I have sent a communication to the Sisters to see if they
are able to attend a Mass with us so we can present the check to them personally. What a great
outreach and showing of Lenten almsgiving! Thank you all so much!!

I wanted to update the St. Nicholas Academy community on an issue that I have been dealing with
personally. On June 2, in Columbus, I am going to have surgery to correct a joint defect in my left
hip. Over the course of the last 10 years I have been dealing with hip issues on and off. I had
arthroscopic surgery 9 years ago to fix a torn labrum that was very successful. I had gotten back to all
the sports I love to play and even started to get into running – including the Little Miami Triathlon last
May, a relay in the Flying Pig last year, and a 14K in September. I was planning on training for the
Half Marathon for the Flying Pig this year, but my hip started to hurt again.
After visiting my doctor, I was told I have hip dysplasia where the socket of my hip joint is too
shallow for the ball of the femur to fit properly – yes, like dogs get; thankfully I don’t have to be put
down though. I’ve had a cortisone injection and have done some physical therapy, both which have
not helped at all. After the failed shot and PT, I was referred to a hip specialist in Columbus who I
went to see over spring break. His area of expertise is preserving the hip joint the best way possible.
In my case, this will involve as second arthroscopy along with a surgery called peri-acetabular
osteotomy (PAO) that will be done together. This surgery preserves the hip socket by using my own
bone to correct the problem – specifically to cut the hip socket away from the pelvis, rotate the socket,
and screw it back into place to better cover the ball of the femur allowing the bone to heal itself. In
my situation, this surgery is preferred over a hip replacement due to my relatively young age, the fact
that I am still very active in sports and with my kids, and that I keep my own “hardware” in case a
replacement is needed in the future. This will delay or hopefully cancel out any need for further
surgeries due to arthritis or cartilage damage, including a replacement. I know you don’t need a
medical history on my hip, but I feel you all need to know this because I will be out of the office the
entire month of June and possibly a majority of July, depending on how my recovery goes. I have to
be non-weight bearing for 6 weeks and will be using some kind of walking aid for probably 3-4
months. When school starts back up again in August, I may be walking with just one crutch or a cane
to get back to total weight bearing, and hopefully by the time Thanksgiving comes, I’ll be back to my
old self.
The office hours will not change this summer and Carol will be here as usual in the month of June.
I will be able to answer emails and to do some computer work from home, but the recovery is a long
one and will occupy much of my time. In the meantime, I will not be in the office on Wednesday,
May 20 in order to go to Columbus for a day’s worth of pre-op appointments. I do ask for your
prayers the next few months for a successful surgery and recovery, I will need all I can get!

Townsend Test Prep will be having an INFORMATION NIGHT for
Parents/Legal Guardians of current 7th grade students who are thinking
about attending Catholic High Schools. Gary Bohnlein, who is nationally
known for his test preparation courses, will speak about the HSPT course
to be offered at St. Nicholas Academy. The discussion will also include
information about what you can do to help your student, possible summer
programs, and the testing and admissions process in the Cincinnati area.
All St. Nicholas Academy 7th grade parents/legal guardians are
invited!!
The workshop will include:





A calendar of generally when the various schools have “Entrance
Events”
An explanation of the High School Entrance Test (HSPT)
Options for preparation for the HSPT
A discussion of how students can pick the best high school for
them.
The program will not promote any individual High School
Door prizes – Two $25.00 gift cards will be given away to drawing
winners.

SNA Spring Musical

Dear 3rd-8th Grade Parents,
I have a musical planned for the end of the school year which will be extracurricular and open to any
interested students in grades 3-8. It is titled, “Harmony High,” borrowing from the “High School Musical” idea
but adapted to a shorter duration and middle-school cast. For students in grades 5-8, participating in the talent
show will fulfill their requirement for music class. I will need students to turn in a signed permission slip
before our first rehearsal on Monday, April 27 after school, wrapping up at 4:30pm.
Rehearsals will be held after school on Mondays and Wednesdays. Students will be expected to attend all
rehearsals unless a parent lets me know in advance. I am willing to work with those who need to miss some
rehearsal time as long as I know in advance and the student has their part well-prepared. Rehearsal dates and
times are listed below.







Materials should be available on Friday for students who plan to take part in the musical. I will come in to
copy scripts and music and will provide discs of the audio tracks for cast members to start listening to and
practicing.
Attached is a permission slip. Please send it in with names and grades of any of your children participating.
If you are available to help with scenery or costumes, please indicate this on the permission slip. We will
only be able to accomplish what we have volunteers for, so I’ll definitely need some help on this! Thank you in

Roger Bacon High School Underwater Hockey Summer Camp
In June 2015, the Roger Bacon High School Underwater Hockey Team will host its ninth
annual Roger Bacon Underwater Hockey summer camp for incoming (or rising) 6th, 7th,
and 8th grade students. Current junior high students will have fun learning the
fundamentals of the exciting sport of underwater hockey. The camp will be from 10 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m. Monday, June 15 through Friday, June 19, 2015. The camp will be held at
Xavier University in the O’Connor Sports Center pool. The cost is $50, and checks
should be made payable to “Roger Bacon High School.”
Any family with an incoming 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student who loves to swim and who
would like to try underwater hockey should contact Coach Paul “Doc” Wittekind at

underwater hockey summer camp.

Dr. Wittekind began the Roger Bacon
High School Underwater Hockey Team
in 1997, the first high school underwater
hockey team in America. He has

Hockey Team at numerous regional, national, and international tournaments.
Several current members of the Roger Bacon team will
assist Doc Wittekind at the underwater hockey youth camp,
mentoring each and every camper. A positive and encouraging environment will be provided, giving each camper the
