'98!
Another Alligator D;S is behind us. Many WDSRC members made their way to Daytona for
the festivities and a ride through the Ocala National Forest. Included were: Robert. Brian.
Jack. Tom. John. Doug. Rick. Mark. Vaughn. Roy. Ken. JK Lacy. William & Liz. John &
Bonnie. Mike & Kay. and the whole HeeHaw gang! It's not a stretch to think that there were
six or more WDSRCers that were there so we can really say that there were about 25
members at the Gator! Nice turn out gang!
Post cards were sent out a few weeks ago informing members of the WDSRC table with
water for Camelbaks, snacks for the fanny packs and a drawing for a t-shirt to a lucky
WDSRCer attending the Gator. That t -shirt winner was Dirty Doug Narny! Your t-shirt will
will be mailed to you. Doug. For more on the Gator. just turn the page ...
Map of the Month
This months map is that of Florida's only state run riding area. You know it well. you've
ridden there many times. CROOOOOOOOOM. 2.600 acres of pits. sand. whoops. hardwood
hammock. and gator snot when it rains! Camping is available at the campgroud for under $10
a night. You must have a sticker to ride, they're available at the gate. Your street-legal bike
is allowed on the road. but they will stop you and make you feel a little uncomfortable about
it. They fear that if others see D/S bikes on the roadway. the irresponsible off-roaders will
will take their dirt bikes and ATVs out there again and dig up the place. TREAD LIGHTLY!
in the court of public opinion my friends.

AT THE "GATOR"!
by Robert Frey
DAYTONA BEACH flORIDA - Wednesday, March 4 saw over 200 riders again take to the
woods at the 7th Annual Alligator Dual-Sport Ride during Bike Week. Daytona Dirt Riders
ordered up some nice weather and boy did they get it. Sunny, clear, blue skies, and
cooi Florida winter temperatures. Ali wrapped up at Bike Week In Florida. The only thing
missing was to go Dual-Sporting!
0.0 Start -. After the 2 hour drive from the Suncoast, we arrived at the start at 0600.
Were we nuts, it was 40 degrees out there. What the heck, It was only 2 degrees colder
at the Swamp Fox! Dragging out of bed at 3AM to load up and go to Daytona, we
(Young Brian and myself) were far from bright eyed and bushy tailed at this point. After
entering we found a spot and set up the club (Withlacoochee
Dual-Sport Riders) banner.
As the sun broke, so did young Brians bike. We eventually started it by jumping it with
the truck. Funny, at the Swamp Fox the XLR wouldn't start, at the Gator it was the KLR.
I wonder which it will be at The Hooch, hopefully not both! Anyway, we set up the
WDSRC table so members could fill their CamelBaks and grab some trail snacks. More
than 25 WDSRCers made their way to the Gator. Our group consisted of Dirt Boy, Woods
Wonder Tom, Young Brian, Honest John, Ranger Rick, Dirty Doug and myself. 0845. Off
to the woods.
0.0 R PR - DDR began by sending us 18 miles down the road at 55mph in 40 degrees.
COOOOOOLD! After winding our way through Deland and over the St. Johns River Bridge
we were on dirt, surrounded by trees!
36.0 FR - The recent heavy rains made the sandy roadways a little bit firmer and we
were tweaking the trails. Wouldn't it be great if there was some mud and water?
36.8 FR - Woods Wonder Tom finds the
side handlebar and gas tank just by his
unnatural) lateral attraction
to mud, all

58.5 BR Follow Arrows - Right into the sand! Alternate trail time! The main course leads
down the graded roads and the alternate runs us through firebreaks and Jeep trails.
Honest John opts to take his DR650 on the main route (stock D/S tires plain don't
work!), and plans to meet us at the gas stop. Sugar sand. We're into it thick now.
Ranger Rick and Dirty Doug (the "400 Boys") let the rest of us go first. Then about a
mile in they came blazing past us on the XRs. They set us up! Set the bikes up good to!
60.6 S FA - Mud Magnet Tom and I pull over to wait for everybody. After 10 minutes we .
get worried until Dirt Boy's XT and Young Brian's monster KLR come bouncing up the
trail. Oh yeah, the "400 Boys" were ahead of us waiting.
74.3 S FR - Mud Magnet Tom endos, then side-o's, and then bush-o's. At the same time
Ranger Rick slide-o's into the brush-o to avoid hitting Tom-a! STOP THE RIDE, THERE'S
BEEN A MULTI-BIKE MISHAP! Tom pulls the DR out of the brush, kicks it over and takes
off. Rick picks up the XR and kicks It over, and kicks. and kicks, and .....
74.3 and 1/2 - Tom crashes AGAIN! Ricks still kickin'
at 74.3...

87.5 - Gas stop. Honest John pulls in a minute or so behind us. The pack is back! Hey,
Isn't that.. ..... Yeah, you were the guy on the '72 CL175 at the Swamp Fox! Only this time
the same guy was riding a '77XL 250! Gas up and It's off to the ferry crossing at Fort
Gates.
93.0 Stop - Ferry Crossing. Walt. For the Ferry. It take about 40 minutes round trip. Dirt
Boy inched up ahead of the rest of us and wound up on the next ferry x-ing. Shouts of
"It's the Titanic!" were pointed in his direction. By the time we crossed the St. Johns
River by boat (after we had to physically restrain Tom because he was beginning to walk
into the river looking for a shallow line to ride the DR across!), Dirt Boy was kicking
back, with his feet up, mocking us as we arrived with the typical "What took you guys
so long?". All he needed was ci-gar!
Suzuki didn't handle the lunch break this year, and
a good thing to! The people at the fish camp were cranking out the hotdogs (Sabbretts!),
chips and soda for all the riders. And there was plenty of food! How many people
remember getting to lunch and there not being any? Way too many! A trp-o-the-helrnetto-y'all!
93.0 S DR - It was down the dirt road and heading back to Daytona.
through Georgetown and other little places on it's way to:
The road wound
101.8 R FR - Lake George Wildlife Management Area. 7 miles of dirt road, some of it
wasned out from the recent rains. Rumor back at the start was that one of the holes
swallowed up a group of doctors from Westerville, Ohio. (Get It! AMA, American Medical
Association! HaHaHaHa. Okay, so it wasn't THAT funny.)
108.9 R PR - This was it. The most dreaded section of the course. The looooongggg ride
back to the start on various local, county and state roads. We were more worn out after
all this pavement than we were from the woods! If DDR can improve one area, this is It.
149.1 END - 1530. Back at the start, we all gathered around and shot the breeze about
the days events. It seems that everyone crashed, except myself and Young Brian, but
Mud Magnet Tom did crash an additional two time to make up for our lack of effort. A
quick check of our raffle numbers yielded the reality that yet again Young Brian and I
were denied a prize. We're 0-2 at D/S events this year! Some more BS with the WDSRC
krewe, our good byes and good rides, and a plan to meet back in OUR woods for a good
D/S time.

Global Positioning System. WDSRC is in need of a GPS unit to map the trails that we use
so that in the future we can present to the various governmental
agencies that , yes. we
do use the forest and these are the trails that we use. Out west the trend is to close areas
with no formal trail use mapping. No trails, no use.
A Magellon 3000XL unit has been found that will meet our needs. It is capable of
interfacing
with an IBM compatible
PC with the use of the Mageilon software package.
WDSRC will be able to document and inventory
our trails with this unit. Total cost of this
unit is $275, this includes sales tax. All WDSRC members who donate to this fund will be
listed in upcoming issues along with the amount donated. The plan is to have the GPS in
hand and usable by June 1, as we start the layout for the Devil's Creek D/S Ride. All
amounts donated over the $275 will be put into a fund for the purchase of a club Easy-up
canopy shelter for events. To kick the fund off FLORIDA DUAL-SPORTER editor and WDSRC
Leader Robert Frey has donated $20.
