Fall
2016
Benzie Conservation District
BCD Custom Pollinator Mix Wildflowers
A Note from the Executive Director
Hard to believe that summer is winding
down here in Benzie County, and what a
summer it’s been! Great weather, lots of
people, bustling sidewalks and a TON
of usage of the natural resources and
surroundings our beautiful county has to
offer. Additionally, the District continues
to hum along, offering a variety of events
and workshops that are both entertaining
(water tours) and educational (shoreline
practices workshop). A big thanks
to John Ransom, our somewhat new
Conservation Specialist for so capably
stepping into the shoes left by the
departure of Mike Jones – we never lost
a step!
The BCD continues to hold, at the
highest level, the integrity of our natural
ecology; we realize it will take more
work as local and visitor usage increases,
to keep it safe and healthy. Fortunately,
we have a lot of great partners who help
in that task. Thanks to all the individuals
and families who recognize the diligence
it takes to protect our environment – it’s
a never-ending process!
Pollinators are large on the radar again
this season; did you know pollinators are
responsible for assisting over 80% of the
world’s flowering plants. Without them,
humans and wildlife wouldn’t have much
to eat or look at! This includes species of
ants, bats, bees, beetles, birds, butterflies,
flies, moths and wasps. Wind and water
also play a role in the pollination of
many plants. The successful transfer of
pollen in and between flowers of the
same plant species leads to fertilization,
successful seed development, and fruit
production. Food crops also depend on
pollination, and it makes a lot of sense to
let them go about their business!
On behalf of the staff and the board,
thank you for your support and please
feel free to give us feedback on how
we’re doing, what you’d like to see
offered through our office, or any other
comments you’d like to share. In the
meantime, enjoy the great outdoors!
All the best,

Seedlings
Red Pine
Fast growing pine for sandy soils; perfect for
most of Benzie County! Straight, tall stems
create natural fence or windbreak. Plant a red
pine plantation as an investment. 60’ to 80’
White Pine
The tallest tree in North America. Likes welldrained soil and cool, humid climates, but can
grow in boggy areas and rocky highlands. Soft
needles welcome many songbirds. Provides
privacy and wind protection. 80’ to 150’
Eastern Hemlock
Long-lived, likes cool and humid climates.
Preference for partial shade and tolerates
full shade. Fine-textured foliage droops to
the ground; pyramidal growth habit. Ability
to withstand hard pruning. 70’ to 120’
Dunegrass
Natural erosion control. Forms dense cover
in sandy areas. Comes bare-root in bundles
of 100 stems. Plant 6” - 8” deep, one stem per
hole in a 6” up to 12” square grid.
Eco-Turf Grass
Seven deep-rooted fescues are alternative to
turf-grass mixes. Low watering, mowing. For
manicured appearance, mow infrequently. Or,
enjoy a soft-lawn look without any mowing.
Pollinator Mix
Essential for crop production. Attracts bees,
wasps, butterflies, moths, beetles. Our custom
mix is formulated for the region’s sandy soil.
Includes 13 wildflowers and four grass seeds.
White Spruce
Christmas-tree shape compliments your yard,
good for windbreak and wildlife habitat. Best
in well-drained, sandy soils, prefers acidic soils
and cooler climates, likes full sun. 60’ to 75’
Northern White Cedar
Medium-sized tree, cone shaped. Likes
limestone soils, or poorly drained swamps.
Full sun, but shade tolerant. Good for hedges,
screens, windbreaks. Winter food and shelter
for deer. Cover and nesting for birds. 30’ to 50’
Balsam Fir
Spire-like crown, shining dark green color and
spicy fragrance makes it a favorite Christmas
tree. In the landscape, this fir is often used as a
screen or windbreak. 45’-65’
Grass & Seed Mix
Indian Grass
Birds love the seedheads in autumn. Also offers
great winter color. Can tolerate wet to dry soils
from sand to clay. Plant with Little Bluestem as an
interesting backdrop in your landscape.
Little Bluestem Grass
Use as border or dry garden; also erosion
control. Grass is soft, textured, and green or
bluish purple, turning orange in fall. Flowering
plumes grow in any soil except boggy.
Big Bluestem Grass
Attracts butterflies; deer resistant; acts as claybuster. Produces distinctive three-parted seed
heads. Green leaves and stems change to reddish color for attractive winter appearance.
Common Milkweed Seeds
Leaves are source of monarch caterpillar food
and where pupae form; flowers are nectar for
many pollinator insects and birds. Plant seeds
in fall for new spring seedlings!
