Fall into Success! - CIS of Greater Central Texas
Greater Central Texas Newsletter FALL 2015 Fall into Success! We are so excited to welcome you to the 2015-16 school year! We hope you had an enjoyable Summer break and are ready to embark on another exciting school year with Communities In Schools (CIS). The success achieved by CIS staff, more than exceeded standards set forth by the State office. 2014-2015 End-of-Year Student Outcomes Case Managed Students: Military Students Served: Homeless Children Served: Student Victims of Crime: 5,522 1,197 356 303 Promoted (to next grade): 96% CIS Seniors Graduated: 98% Stayed in School: 99% Improved in Attendance: 84% Behavior: 98% Academic Performance: 99% A ROUND “FORE” CIS KIDS CIS hosted its 17th Annual Ken Morgan Invitational Golf Tournament on SaturPLATINUM SPONSOR day, June 20, 2015 at Sammons Golf Course in Temple. Golfers came out in droves - 106 in all! With the help of over 150 sponsors/donors we netted $13,229. Everyone was ready to have fun; support a worthy cause; and best of all win some great prizes donated by Jack Hilliard Distribution Co. Inc. and many others. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the youth served by CIS in Killeen, Temple, Belton, Copperas Cove, Florence, Salado and Cameron. This year was a huge success! Special “Thanks” to our lunch sponsor, Petty’s BBQ in Killeen for the delicious meal they so graciously donated. We are excited to see what our next tournament has in store for us! Coats & Shoes School Supplies When serving such a vast number of at-risk youth, it is crucial to have a strong support system within the community. Fortunately, STAR Group-Veterans Helping Veterans (SGVHV) and Women’s Army Corps Veterans’ Association (WACVA) CH 94 Chapter 94 understood the importance of not only meeting our students’ needs, but of the partnership between CIS and their organizations. At the start of each year, parents scurry around trying to get school supplies that they often cannot afford. This is one area CIS supporters have made a difference. In August, CIS received over 2,000 school supply items which were distributed throughout our 7 school districts. Special thanks to the following donors: On Saturday August 15th, the two Veterans organizations worked together to collect new and/or gently used coats and shoes for Communities In Schools. Over 100 coats & shoes as well as $400 cash were donated from numerous supporters. Huge thanks to SGVHV & WACVA! Eureka Lodge #12 & Heart of Ruth #12 Central Texas COPPERAS COVE “Be a student as long as you still have something to learn, and this will mean all your life.” ~ Henry L. Doherty 4520 E. Central Texas Expressway, Ste 106 - Killeen, TX 76543 Office: (254) 554-2132 Fax: (254) 554-2723 On the Path to Success Amanda Matthews and Kevin Moody, Site Coordinators at Killeen High School are pictured with students Virgil Moore and Meredeth Burgess. Both students have after school jobs and needed transportation to and from work after school rather than walking everyday. Mr. Moody and Mrs. Matthews sent out requests for bicycles on Thursday morning, September 17 and by Friday afternoon one private donor and one CIS Board Member from the local community agreed to provide bikes for the students. Though choosing to remain anonymous, these were obviously two very special people who care about the needs of our students. Put Pep in Their Step Elijah Hudson, 18 yearold student at Ellison High School stopped in to visit Mr. Moseley, CIS Site Coordinator on his campus. Mr. Moseley noticed that Eli’s shoes were old and tattered so he gave him a pair of shoes that were donated to CIS. Eli was ecstatic and very grateful for his new shoes! His only disclaimer: He did not want to throw away his old tennis shoes since they were the very first thing he bought at the age of 16 with his first paycheck. Don't worry Eli - You can have both! The partnership between CIS and our community is invaluable and greatly appreciated by all involved! 8 Ways to Be a Great Student! 1. Be prepared for class 2. Show up, every time 3.
