Tourism Report- June 2011
Crystal Bickford, Tourism Coordinator
Time is continuing to fly by and I am still having lots of fun. This is sure to be a busy time for Ponca City
Tourism especially since many are making preparations for their 2011 Summer Vacation travels!
On May 9th, I had the opportunity to provide a Ponca City Tourism update to our City Commissioners. This
was a great opportunity to explain all the awesome things Ponca City Tourism has been working on this year
and some of our upcoming events.
On May 16th, I had the opportunity to attend Ponca City Day at the State Capitol with some of our fabulous
attractions. Those in attendance were Jerri Barnes & Mary Ann McKay (Conoco Museum), Ken Luttrell
(Kaw Enterprise Development Authority), Kathy Tippin (Kaw Lake Association), Rosalie Dawson (Pioneer
Woman Museum & Statue), Holly Labossiere & Marcia Hull (Ponca City Library), Kevin Brown (Wentz
Golf Course) and Rich Cantillon & Donna Hingtgen (Ponca City Tourism). We had a great day and passed
out over 200 bottles of Head Country BBQ Sauce and Ponca City Visitors Guides to each of our Senators,
Representatives, Lieutenant Governor‟s office and the Governor‟s office.
This last month, we had several requests for Ponca City promotional materials and visitor bags. We provided
over 300 promotional items for various events and organizations along with over 900 visitor bags!!
Looking forward to June, the first weekend is “over flowing” with fun things to see and do. It‟s going to be a
great weekend to invite both friends and family to Ponca City! Just a few things on the calendar for that
weekend include „The Music Man”, Draggin‟ Grand, Classic Car Show, Fly in Breakfast, Herb Festival,
AMBUC Runamuck and the Poncan Opry.
The rest of June also looks to be busy with many more events. Those events include the Green Earth Yoga
Retreat, 101 Ranch Old Timers Association Wine and Cheese tasting, Juneteenth Celebration, Multicultural
Rodeo and Kawfest. You won‟t want to miss any of these exciting events!!
In closing I would like to say, remember there is always something to do or see in Ponca City. I am updating
our website, www.Poncacitytourism.com, daily with new event listings! If you ever have any questions regarding tourism please feel free to call me or stop in and see me at the Ponca City Chamber of Commerce. I
will be happy to assist you.
We were visited by Senator David Myers and Representative Steve Vaughan during Ponca City Day at the Capitol.

Daren Wilson, Chamber Chair
Congratulations to 25th Leadership Ponca City Class that graduated on May 10, 2011! This is a fantastic class
and I was inspired by all the “25 Special Projects” this class completed this year! JOB WELL DONE! I also
want to congratulate Chuck Rager for his tireless efforts he put into this program as his term ends. Thank you
Chuck! If you know of any person who is interested to apply for the 26th Leadership Ponca City class, please
notify the Chamber office for an application for the upcoming class beginning in August!
We completed our monthly auction planning committee meeting on May 19, 2011. Fantastic turnout and I
really appreciate all the support and effort this committee is putting in to create such an incredible auction this
year. We have over 70 sponsors to date! I also want to thank John Birch and the Osage Million Dollar Elm
casino for being our premier sponsor for the 2011 Party at the Palace! We now begin our efforts to obtain
auction items for the event. If a volunteer ask you to support our chamber in way of sponsorship and donation
of an auction item, please know we need your assistance and we greatly appreciate your support!
Each month I have the opportunity to attend our great committee meetings for our Chamber. We continue to
enjoy fantastic attendance and it is making a difference in our Chamber and our Community! If you are not
currently active in a committee, please find one of interest and contribute your time and ideas.

WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW CAN HURT US
David Myers
Ponca City Development Authority
There is this idea that economic development is all about giving companies money….your money. ED organizations
like PCDA just give it out like candy with no strings attached, or so the notion goes. The check, we are led to believe,
will be ready by 3:00 p.m.
There have been countless media stories about communities who appear to do just that. The reality, of course, is
far different. That car plant in another state did not get a check for $250 million. They received training funds tied to
the 2,000 people they will hire, added to the new street and sewer going to the new building valued at X. Investments, in
other words, in the people and infrastructure that also helps the company. Economic development incentives work that
way and are almost always tied to job creation. The incentive that is provided for operations, as opposed to fixed locational
expenses, is very rare indeed.
The only real exception to the incentive for jobs equation are deals done to make sure that the big box retailer
builds on your side of the street, rather than the other side of the street which is technically in another community. This
type of incentive is tied to sales tax production and is a whole different animal. No one wants to have their services cut
and many of us live under the misguided assumption that public money, unlike our household budgets, can buy things at
the same price it did twenty years ago.
It‟s easy to understand why stories in the media make it sound like communities are writing checks to businesses.
Some of the deals and most of the deal points are quite complicated and would detract from the overall story. Incentives
worth $250 million carry that value so why not report it that way?
Coupled with this is the notion of a friendly business climate. Business friendly is a different animal, however.
Being a business friendly government doesn‟t mean you turn a blind eye or have little or no regulations. It means your
standards are reasonable, your fees are reasonable, your application of the adopted standards is aimed at the spirit of the
law, as opposed to the strict letter of the law, (not always the same thing, unless you‟re a lawyer) and the city has a world
view on what is good for the overall community.
Since most businesses operate in one and only one community, their experience is with that community. Any
enforcement can be bothersome and it‟s understandable why a business might get mad if they are being told to fix,
change or comply with something. Other communities, they often believe, are far more business friendly since they
provided company X with all that money.
When it comes to existing businesses, economic development exists between the regulated and the regulators.
The truth is that it‟s far easier to do this in a community such as Ponca City since we really are “business friendly.
Having worked myself in a number of communities in Los Angeles County, Ponca City is easily the most business
friendly community I have ever seen by a wide measure. Do our existing businesses know this? In many cases the
answer is no and that‟s unfortunate.
As for business recruitment, we lost a potential business once because they were promised something by another
state that we knew we could not deliver. We also knew that other state could not deliver it either. The business, hearing
about all of the great deals in media reports, assumed they could get it. They went with the, let‟s call it “overly optimistic”
offer.” They did not get it but they also were too proud to return to us and stuck with the other community.
In the above example, what the company did not know hurt them. It also hurt us since they did not come here.
In any proposal, particularly those that have a lot of time between the proposal and the acceptance of the proposal, things
will change. It‟s the overall partnership between business and the community, (not necessarily just between the business
and the economic development organization) that makes the difference.

PRIDE Training Available for Chamber Businesses
PRIDE Training is available for Ponca City Chamber Businesses. This important program will help improve customer
service and knowledge of Ponca City.
You may wonder what is PRIDE Training? First off the letters in the word PRIDE stands for Producing, Resourceful,
Informed, Dedicated, Employees. PRIDE training is an exciting and affordable opportunity for employees to create better
customer service, help employees become excited about their job, and have a good knowledge of Ponca City attractions
and events.
Many employees do not realize what they have to gain by offering quality customer service. This training shows the
employee how they benefit along with the business.
It is important to our economy that people respond in a positive way about Ponca City. PRIDE provides this positive
response to the questions asked of employees. For example is there anything to do in Ponca City? Is there a good place
to eat in Ponca City? The PRIDE training will last approximately two hours.
Please phone 765-4400 if you are interested in discussing a time to train your employees. The PRIDE training normally
takes 2 hours but we can be flexible to suit your needs. We will also train at your location or the Chamber Office.
We will improve your customer service and knowledge of Ponca City both important to the success of your business!
Phone the Chamber Office today at 765-4400 for more information.
