Ponca City Day at the Capitol
Ponca City tourist attractions will be set up in the State Capitol 4th floor Rotunda promoting
our city on Wednesday, April 18th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To date, the Marland Mansion, Marland’s Grand Home, Conoco Museum, Kaw Lake
Association, KEDA and Ponca City Chamber/Tourism have committed to attend. All of our
attractions have been invited to participate.
Items promoting our city tourist attractions will be given away during the day and information
on our events will also be distributed.
Every legislator will receive a bottle of Head Country BBQ Sauce as a gift from Ponca City.
We are excited to show the state legislature and capitol staff what we have to see and do in
Ponca City! We will also show the state that tourism is a major industry right here in Ponca
City!

Education and Workforce Committee to Host
School Support Staff Appreciation Reception
The Education and Workforce Development Committee of the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce will
host a come and go reception for all School Support Staff on Wednesday, April 25th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
with great food and door prizes.
School “support staff” includes anyone that is not an in-room educator.
This fun, come and go event is in recognition of the work these individuals do for our students everyday. It is
hoped that all support staff will take time out of their day and come by the Chamber office, 5th and Grand, and
let us honor them with some super food and a chance to win some outstanding door prizes.
If you would like to donate a door prize, please bring it by our office.
Ponca’s Big Cleanup - April 21st, 2012
What: Ponca’s Big Clean-up is a day to volunteer. This event is organized by the 2012 Ponca City Leadership
Class in order to demonstrate the gratitude of local residents, businesses, groups and area organization toward
the Ponca City community. On April 21st, 2012, volunteers will provide service to the residents of Ponca City
by performing tasks for those who need assistance. Job requests can be for anything from pulling weeds to
painting and many things in between.
Who: You can become a volunteer and help your community by giving 4-6 hours of your time and work
alongside your friends, family, colleagues and neighbors to help beautify Ponca City.
When: Saturday, April 21, 2012 - 9:00 a.m.
Volunteer Signup Sheets Due: Friday, April 13th by 5 p.m.
MANDATORY information meeting: Tuesday, April 17th
One volunteer or group leader from each group, business, organization, etc. must attend this
informational session when they are available between the hours of 4 and 8 p.m.
Where: The Ponca’s Big Clean-up rally point will be the pavilion at Pioneer Park located on the corner of
Highland and 5th Street. All participants please meet by 9 a.m.
Why: To help our neighbors, friends and community members with tasks that they are unable to complete
themselves: yard work, small limb removal, painting, etc.

The Chamber Board of Directors and the Ambassador Committee will have a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for
The Blue Moon on Friday, April 20, at 11 a.m. The Blue Moon is located at 1418 E. South Avenue.
Everyone is invited to attend this special event! The Chamber appreciates this investment in Ponca City and
the re-opening of a historic restaurant in our community!

Ponca City has welcomed the first few days of spring season with April Showers only to prepare for the May Flowers.
The beautiful weather in Ponca City has both the locals and visitors excited to get out into the glowing sunshine and
experience all that we have to offer at our incredible attractions and outstanding events. So whether you are enjoying
the beautiful outdoors or are staying cool indoors please let me share with you some of the great things that Ponca
City Tourism has completed or is currently working on…
Ponca City Tourism recently attended the St. Louis Working Women Survival Show and the Ft. Worth Vacation,
Leisure & Outdoor Home Show. We distributed almost 3,000 visitor guides and promotional items between both
shows. A HUGE thank you goes out to Nancy Kruckeberg and Barbara Rozell for representing Ponca City in a fine
way at St. Louis! Ponca City Tourism is excited and ready to greet all the visitors that heard about Ponca City in the
last trade show season…
Ponca City Tourism is gearing up for the 2012 Oklahoma Corporate Road Shows beginning in April. The Oklahoma
Tourism & Recreation Department is coordinating and hosting mini-travel shows to be held at corporate offices of
major employers around the state. These on-site shows will provide the opportunity to distribute our Ponca City
visitor guides and promotional items to the in-state consumer. The Road Shows are a great opportunity to stimulate
immediate travel within the state and help fellow Oklahomans begin to plan for summer getaways. Road Trip #1
includes Devon Energy Corporation, Oklahoma City, on April 12th and Farmers Insurance, Oklahoma City, on
April 16th.
Ponca City Tourism is excited about preparing for our 5th annual Ponca City Day at the State Capitol on April 18th.
The event will be held in the 4th floor Rotunda of the State Capitol Building from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Ponca
City Tourism will be providing each legislator with a full-sized bottle of Head Country Bar-B-Q Sauce as a special
gift from Ponca City. We have invited all of our attractions, hotels and city departments to join us and represent
Ponca City in a GRAND way! We have received commitments to date from the following Ponca City venues:
Conoco Museum, E.W. Marland Estate, Marland’s Grand Home, Kaw Enterprise Development Authority, Kaw
Lake Association, Ponca City WIFI and Pioneer Technology Center. We look forward to hearing from more of our
great attractions soon…
April is near and there are many great events on the calendar!!! You won’t want to miss the many performing arts
events including “How the Other Half Loves” presented by Ponca Playhouse, Redbud Jazz Festival presented by
Northern Oklahoma College – Tonkawa Campus, “Columbinus” presented by Northern Oklahoma College – Tonkawa
Campus, The Poncan Opry presented by the Poncan Theatre and The Perfect Gentlemen in “A Night of Vaudeville”
presented by the Poncan Theatre. Ponca City will also host the 79th Annual AMBUCS Easter Egg Run, “Walk a
Mile in Her Shoes” for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, 20th Annual Taste and Tasteless and the Earth Day 5K
Run “Go for the Green” during the month of April. Expect the Unexpected in Ponca City!!!

Chamber Report - April 2012

Spring is in the air as is March Madness which I personally love – although it would have been nice to
have an Oklahoma team represented. Oh well, as they say there is always next year. And what a relief
the recent rains have been – even coming from a contractor!! Finally, I have received “countless”
positive comments regarding the selection of the 2012 Ponca City Chamber membership decal colors
this year. Please proudly display this “work of art” membership decal in your business for all to see
and enjoy – I have a strange feeling that the decal colors next year may change!! Right Natalie??
One of the more news worthy items recently has been the national recognition of your fearless leader
Rich Cantillon. You see, Rich has been selected as the Vice Chair for the Winter Institute of the
Board of Regents for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In addition to Rich being selected for this
prestigious position, and to again show that the Ponca City Chamber and community really does shine
on a national level, the Ponca City Chamber was also selected to host Kipson Gundani from the Chamber
of Commerce in Zimbabwe, Africa. Kipson arrived March 17 and will be “shadowing” your fearless
leader Rich Cantillon for the next few weeks courtesy of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce. This honor
is usually bestowed on large cities such as Chicago, Oklahoma City, etc., but once again Ponca City
rose to the top! According to Kipson, his Oklahoma and Ponca City experiences so far have been
“awesome”. I would encourage all of our members and our community to stop by the Chamber office
to congratulate Rich and to welcome Kipson to Ponca City, as only “Ponca City-ites” can do!!
The other item I want to discuss is that the Chamber Board members have started preliminary discussions
regarding our membership drive this year, and if any of you have any suggestions or want to be a part
of the membership drive this year please contact the Chamber. Any ideas and assistance are welcome. Rich
has compiled membership information pertaining to other Chambers and communities our size and we
match up extremely well in comparison, but we want to not only match up well, we want to continue
to be the best. We will have our first “membership” meeting toward the end of this month so stay
tuned to Rich’s weekly email updates for more information. Also please remember that membership
support is the sole funding mechanism for YOUR Chamber of Commerce aside from an every other
year fundraiser – your continued support is vital to YOUR Chamber continuing to be the best in
Oklahoma at promoting our community and retail businesses.
Finally I would like to again encourage all of our members to become as engaged as you can with
YOUR Chamber, through participation in a committee or assisting in one of the many endeavors the
Chamber promotes. I will also again remind you that Chamber Bucks make great gifts and employee
incentives, and it keeps those dollars local. Remember to Shop Ponca First!!!!!

THERE OUGHTA BE A LAW

Don’t worry, there probably is. Every year, states across the country pass laws that are, to be polite, curious.
We don’t always know the motivation, but the outcome often puts the state in a controversial light.
Controversy, in this context, means that the law is viewed favorably by some and unfavorably by others. Usually,
the controversial law fulfills a campaign promise made as a result of a strong ground swell of public sentiment. In our
political context, fulfilling a campaign promise is the very definition of doing what “the people” want, assuming that the
people were paying attention to a candidate in the first place.
From an economic development perspective, however, what the people want may not necessarily be what a
business wants. Companies with the choice of several different locations typically select from locations that are less, not
more, controversial everything else being equal. More to the point, the choice is theirs to make.
An example of this was very clear a couple of years ago when the State of Arizona passed legislation which was
billed as “anti-immigration.” I am not making a value judgment on the legislation but I can tell you that a significant
majority of site selectors and companies who at the time were in the market for new locations reacted very negatively to
the passage of this legislation. Companies, please understand, simply do not want to get caught up in a political controversy.
They have far too much to lose and far too little to gain.
So it gets a little interesting when someone runs for office, from either side of the political aisle, pledging to do
something very specific about a perceived problem while at the same time telling the voters that they are “all about”
bringing new jobs to a state or area. It is not at all uncommon, however, that another hot button issue that a candidate
promised to take on in order to correct a perceived problem may also hurt the ability to build jobs.
It’s never clear, of course, and I’m not saying we should not debate the issues. We are all Americans and the
opinions of each of us should matter, even those with whom we disagree. The point I’m making is that the economic
consequences of our actions need to be considered and debated as well. We may want businesses to share our views on
something we consider important but businesses make decisions based upon what is important to their bottom line, not
necessarily reflecting their personal views on an issue or what we think should be important to them.
Curious laws, by the way, are not at all the purview of any one political perspective. In California, the state and
cities are famous for taking on issues that are more left of center. There are regular attempts, for example, to do things
on the education front, such as calling something a language that isn’t or inserting specific, non-traditional curriculum
into schools, that help to craft the image of California for better or for worse. On the other hand, the state of Wyoming
just considered whether or not it should buy an aircraft carrier due to a perceived threat of anarchy driven by their lack of
faith in the federal government, (the majority of their legislature rejected the idea).
Businesses want, need and demand civility, stability and an environment which allows them to concentrate on
their needs. They want consensus, not fighting. They know and accept that government must regulate and tax because
they, too, want good schools, modern infrastructure and public safety. They understand that the world, let alone the
United States, is their customer and that there are a lot of different views. They have no desire to alienate any of their
customer base by becoming associated with a political viewpoint that may make a portion of that base angry.
We have come to a point in politics, either driven by instant information, media hype or the need to say or do
something unusual to get attention, where decision is often done in a way that seems to resemble mob rule. That’s
unfortunate. More to the point, that is not what companies need in order to survive in this global environment.
It may seem like we live in a spectator world but we do not. The truth is that we have more power than ever and
elected officials and political candidates are more plugged into that power than ever before. Back in the day, what used
to be simple, knee jerk grumbling, (“there ought to be a law”) may, today, actually become a law or a political crusade
with an economic price tag. We need to be careful what we wish for and mindful of what it costs.

Ribbon Cutting
The Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce had a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for a brand new business and Chamber
member, The Rack Gym, located at 2nd and Brookfield Street. This new gym features state of the art workout equipment
and is owned by business partners, Zach and Liz Jackson and Sam and Shandi Lionelli. Holding the ribbon and
representing the Chamber is Natalie Fraser and Kipson Gundani. Cutting the ribbon is Liz Jackson.
Ponca City, Blackwell, Newkirk, Kaw Lake Association
and Perry all had representatives at the Red Carpet Country
Tourism Conference held in Alva. Rich Cantillon taught a
session on how to make every visitor a guest and every
trip an event. Other sessions featuring “How to Not Go It
Alone,” and “How to Get People to Work with You.”
Roundtable discussions took place on Resource Partners
for Event Planning.
Barbara Rozzel and Nancy Kruckeberg worked a tourism
show this past month in St. Louis, Missouri. They
reported the show was outstanding and well attended.
They feel they made some great contacts for Ponca City.
We were part of an Oklahoma group of cities at the show.
This is one of the tourism shows that the Oklahoma
Department of Tourism recommends for our city.

Handbook for Partners in Education
Partners in Education (P.I.E.) concept:
This Chamber program brings a business and school together in a partnership to provide a better educational environment
for our children.
We have P.I.E. partner businesses working with our schools that are both large and small businesses.
A business/school partnership is to bring business volunteers into our schools to assist where needed.
The needs are determined by the school principal and then the business determines what they can provide. The principal
and the business need to develop a strong relationship.
The business needs to remember they are there to assist where needed. . . . not to direct the school on what they need to
be doing.
We ask the principal to review the needs of their school and discuss with their business partner these needs. Then the
business partner needs to look at their resources, both monetary and volunteer time, and see what they can provide.
Here is part of what our P.I.E. Partners have done for our schools this past year:
1. Provide mentors.
2. Donate funds for incentive programs. These cash donations can be
large or small, everything helps. Some incentives for the students
include a variety of items: gift cards, pizza, t-shirts, cookies, etc.
3. Listen to children read.
4. Donate funds for school supplies. This is a real need and continues
throughout the school year, not just at the beginning.
5. Assist in learning centers.
6. Field trip assistance – for example, provide water.
7. Work in clinic or library.
8. Donate clothes and coats.
9. Provide lanyards.
10. Provide monitors for recess and lunch.
11. Practice vocabulary with non-English speaking students.
12. Play instructional games.
13. At Christmastime, play Santa, provide gift cards, turkeys and
treats.
14. Bingo Caller.
15. Gifts for Teacher Appreciation Week.
16. Play games at recess.

First you must be a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Just phone the Chamber, 765-4400, and let us know you would
like to be a P.I.E. Partner. If you have a school you want to be a partner with, please let us know, otherwise we will assign
you a school.
Then our staff will let the principal of that school know, and the principal will contact you.
They will set up a meeting to discuss the needs of the school and you decide what you can provide.
Please consider being a P.I.E. Partner. We need every Chamber Business we can to support this important project benefiting
our children and our schools.

Rich Cantillon Named Vice Chair to Board of Regents of
U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Organization Management
Washington D.C.-Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber
of Commerce, has appointed Rich Cantillon, IOM, Vice Chair of the board for the Winter Institute Board of Regents. As
a member of this Board, Rich will implement the policies created by Institute’s National Board of Trustees. Rich will
then be Chair of the Regents Board in 2013.
“A strong Board of Regents is essential to Institute’s success,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the U.S. Chamber’s
Vice President of Institute for Organization Management. “These volunteers drive site attendance, provide recommendations for program improvement, and serve as an on-site resource for Institute participants.”
Since its commencement in 1921, the Institute program has been educating tens of thousands of association, chamber,
and other nonprofit leaders on how to build stronger organizations, better serve their members and become strong
business advocates.
Institute’s five Boards of Regents serve on behalf of the National Board of Trustees. Each Board of Regents is responsible
for recruitment, retention, and marketing of the program nationwide. Each regent is an Institute graduate nominated by
their peers, and will serve for a designated term of up to two years.

Kipson Gundani has arrived from Zimbabwe to be with our Chamber for the next 5 weeks. Kipson is
with the National Chamber of Commerce of Zimbabwe. It has been exciting to have Kipson with us. He
has already participated in several Chamber activities in his first week here including the Ambassadors
Committee meeting, Executive Board meeting, Tourism Bureau meeting, Business after Hours in Stillwater
at Quality Water, the Free Wheel Officials visit to Ponca City, the OCAST Officials visit to Ponca City,
Governmental Affairs Committee, Ponca Politics, and eating at the Rusty Barrell, where he got to “pin”
the map!

Ponca Politics at City Hall
With Senator Fields and Representative Vaughan
The third legislative forum of the year with Senator Fields and Representative Vaughan will be held at City
Hall in the City Commission Chambers on Friday, April 27th starting at 11:30 a.m.
Several important topics were discussed during our previous two forums including state income tax, taxes,
education, and other state items.
These events are open to the public and are sponsored by the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Ponca
City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Remember that our forums with Senator Eddie Fields and Representative Steve Vaughan can be viewed on
Channel 22 or on the website www.pcgov22.com Monday – Friday at 10:30 a.m., 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
