The Songs of Henry Lawson - Compiled by Chris Kempster
Second Edition (includes 45 new settings collected in 2007)
The poems of Henry Lawson are evocative of time and place and, like Australia’s folk songs, they give us a sense of our national identity. People from many walks of life have felt compelled to set Lawson’s poems to music and, over many years, folk singer, Chris Kempster
– a folk singer and foundation member of the Bush Music Club – collected such musical settings and published them in 1989 in a volume
called The Songs of Henry Lawson.
The fascination with Lawson continues and the second edition of Chris’s work includes an additional 45 songs, in part as a tribute to
Chris who died in January 2004, aged 70.
Musical notation and chords are provided for each song and there are explanatory notes and evocative photographs throughout. The new
edition retains the introduction by Manning Clark.
The volume is designed with the needs of performers, teachers and students in mind, being spiral-bound and easy to prop on your music
stand. Singers and musicians will find in it
inspiration for their own performance and composition.
Revenue from the sale of this book will be used by the Folk Federation of NSW to fund future projects. Please see back cover of Cornstalk for details about ordering your copy. Folk Fed members receive a discount.

Racz In Waters
St Albans Folk Festival 2010
Folk music lovers from around the country descended in record numbers to the
idyllic Macdonald Valley for this year’s St Albans Folk Festival, and were treated to
one of the best festivals to date.
Under beautiful Hawkesbury skies more than a thousand people revelled in the
diverse range of quality folk music on offer at the event, which was held over the
Anzac Day long weekend.
In the absence of international artist Andy Irvine, who was prevented from
attending by the Icelandic Volcano Crisis, Australian feature artists Racz ‘n Waters,
String Contingent, The Lurkers, Bruce Watson, Nick Rheinberger and The Flying
Penguins (now The Do Riders) more than rose to the occasion to ensure festival
goers enjoyed every moment.
They were joined by traditional folk performers Chloe and Jason and Craig and
Simone, as well as old festival favourites the Wheeze and Suck Band and Mothers
of Intention, to compile a great weekend of music, dance, social commentary and
all-round family fun.
In addition, some fresh faces and genre stretching was provided by the Mean
Feet Brass Band, The Paul Burton Trio and the Torchsong Country Soul Band.
“This year’s festival was a great success. The quality of performers was
outstanding and really shows that folk music in New South Wales is thriving. I was
impressed by the musicianship across the board and was pleased to be able to field
local emerging talent like Cody Dillon, Brothers 3, Creatures Rose and Nissa which
bodes well for the future of folk music in Australia” Festival Director John Uren
said.
In addition to performances, a host of musical skills were imparted to festival
goers who participated in the well attended and received workshops. The Bush
Dance led by the Gang Gang Bush Orchestra also deserves special mention as a
festival highlight.
“I would like to extend a special thanks to the townspeople of St Albans and
especially the many volunteers who made the festival possible. They did a superb
job and without their ongoing support we could not make the festival so affordable”
Uren said.
For those already thinking about next year’s festival, because Anzac Day will
fall on Easter Monday, the event has been scheduled from the 8th to the 10th April
2011, which will avoid a clash with the National in Canberra. This weekend will be
the start of the School Holiday period. Please note this in your calendar.

VALE: DON MADDEN
Don Madden of Albury died
Monday 28 June 2010.
Don and partner Pat Karlsson
were popular visitors to the
Uranquinty Festival and many other
folk events. After his retirement from
the Victorian Railways, Done and Pat
travelled extensively in Australia.
Don supported community
radio and performed with Barbara
Lobegeiger in the last radio play
broadcast by Radio 2XX in Canberra. Don was also a masterful player of
the folk harmonica, and the leader of
the Blowhards harmonica trio. He
mainly played Aussie bush music and
dance tunes, in an “old time” style
that was favoured by mouth organists
in Australia before the second world
war. The style involves playing single
note lead melody at the same time
as chordal accompaniment. It’s not
an easy style to master and alas it is
seldom taught nowdays. It is a very
lyrical style, very easy on the ear, and
none could play in that style better
than Don. Fortunately Don’s playing was
recorded for the NLA. If you would
like a copy of Don’s harmonica
album apply to Pete West 02 6299
7176. The album has a dozen of
Don’s favourite folk tunes, and
it’s a treat for all who enjoy good
folk music played on the diatonic
harmonica.
Don was the lead member of
the popular harmonica trio “The
Blowhards” with Jim Stubbs and Pete
West. The Blowhards was a popular
act at many folk festivals. Don was widely regarded as the
harmonica players’ harmonica player. He always gave generously of his
talents at workshops and to any who
showed an interest in his music and
his instrument. We will greatly miss

Gulgong Folk Festival
still in doubt
A meeting intended to save the
Gulgong Folk Festival has offered little
progress and left major doubts over the
staging of the annual event.
The meeting last week attracted
fewer than 10 people and still not one
person has put their hand up to run the
festival.
Doubts over the Festival’s future
were raised in February when only five
people attended the first meeting and no
volunteers answered the call to run the
event.
Previous organiser and folk musician Bob Campbell called upon someone to come forward at the time but
there has been no further interest.
Gulgong Folk Festival treasurer David Bennett said it was now too far into
the year to start preparing and organising such a large event.
“With nobody on board to run the
festival and time running out for this
year’s event it doesn’t look good,” he
said.
However Mayor Percy Thompson,
who attended last week’s meeting, believes the event is still going to run.
“I’ve approached some people who
might be interested and will continue
to do so until we get it up and running
again,” he said.
“It’s important people get on side
and go along with it.
“We can’t afford to lose one of the
biggest events in our region and have it
close down for good.”
Mr Campbell resigned from his
position as festival organiser earlier this
year, citing other commitments and time
management as the biggest difficulties
to run the event properly.

BMC Subscription Ball
Saturday 28th August
The Bush Music Club holds its
Colonial-style Subscription Ball in
August each year. For many years this
has been held in Maitland Town Hall, in
part because there is a dedicated band of
Newcastle dancers who have willingly
taken on the organisational role, and
partly because the Maitland Town Hall
has one of the best sprung dance floors
in the country.
The musical line up for the Ball
has, for many years, been the Coalbrook Band who have handled the large
diversity in musical styles with great accomplishment. Again this year we will
enjoy the musical talents of the entire
Strutt family (Helen, Greg, Jennifer and
Catherine) plus the combined fiddle
expertise of Bob McInnes and Chris
Duncan. A little touch of Irish, a solid
base of Scottish, Colonial expertise to
burn, some Scandinavian influences,
17th century English - and who knows
what other surprises?
This year’s Ball, has a colour theme
in the colours of Geraldton Wax: Green
and Pink. There are many new forms
of Geraldton wax including a beautiful new variety called Dancing Queen.
Note new start time (to allow for midnight finish) 6.30 for 7pm.
The website <http://users.tpg.com.
au/juliasm/BMC-Ball/> has more information, including dance instructions.
However, it is highly recommended
that you attend at least one practice: one
is in Gosford, two in Newcastle, one in
Sydney (Concord) – see Dates For Your
Diary. These days are fun in themselves
– but it also helps to minimise teaching
on the night.
The Heritage Hall at Speers Point
Park has been booked for the BBQ
Picnic next day. There will be live
music, some dancing, and plenty of
food and good company. The park is on
the north-west tip of Lake Macquarie
and has wonderful views of the Lake,
a quiet, safe setting with play areas for
the kids, and plenty of room in the hall
in case of rain. It is only 15 minutes
from the Toronto entry to the Freeway,
meaning an hour’s journey to the outskirts of Sydney.
You can book online: $50, Non-Dancers
$40, Early bird (received by Sunday 8th
August) $40, Student concession $30.

Rowan Webb
A recent guest
on ABC Radio
National's Science
Show was Rowan
Webb. If you have
been on the ausfolk
email list for longer
than three years, you
would remember his
knowledgeable, intelligent and reasonable
contributions to the
list – on subjects from
maypole dancing to
Swedish woodwork, from folk politics to gypsies. They were
all well worth keeping.
Rowan, retired, was a Technical Officer in the School of
Humanities, University of New England, Armidale. Their
website, une.edu.au/staff/rwebb.php, shows that he has a
BA in Prehistory, a BSc (Hons) in Bushfire Ecology, an
MSc in Successional Plant Ecology and a Dip. Ed specialising in Camps and Excursions as Educational Tools. He has
researched plant ecology in the Antarctic, been involved in
pioneering education, and has been a volunteer with emergency services for many years. A folklorist for much of his
life, he also has sung in the Opera House, played concertina
and melodeon, and called bush dances around Australia and
overseas.
He was talking to Robyn Williams about his long held
hope, for more than 20 years, to have his body and complete
skeleton placed in a museum that deals with physical anthropology. Now he has been diagnosed with bowel cancer,
and his prospects are not good. To date, there have been few
Caucasian skeletons available for research in Australia. Most
skeletons have been Aboriginal, or even Indian from deprived
backgrounds.
Rowan wishes to supply his skeleton and the ethnography
which accompanies it for medical and scientific research –
especially as he can suppy details about particular features
– such as the damage to his shin bone. “People would have
looked at that a century ago and said that I had had secondary
syphilis, whereas I know that as a member of the intervarsity
judo team at Melbourne, I was a bit of a hard practiser, and it
was continual hacking at my attempts to do a particular throw
and the other person blocking it that I would get their ankle
bone belting up my shin bone ... that has left this particular
thing.”
But fulfilling his wish is harder than you might think.

Folk Lore Takes Its Place
Amidst The High Arts
It is cold, wet and winter has banished the sun from Sydney
shores. But the ferry is free and still running to Cockatoo
Island where all the venues to this years visual arts exhibition are free also. The Biennale is an arts festival on a grand
scale with over 1300 artists from 82 countries. The Beauty of
Distance, Songs of Survival in a Precarious age is the chosen
theme for the 17th Biennale of Sydney, A number of individuals and public institutions have given data so that Warren
Fahey could weld images together and mould this archival
material into an installation of international standing.
A couple of years ago, Cockatoo Island was one of the
selected sites which impressed many with the inspired use
of the old industrial complex. Warren Fahey was one who
saw its potential for an installation picking up threads of the
island’s history with archival material and the folklore of
early Australian settlement. Like all good ‘folk arts’ a large
number have given their knowledge, creative gifts and access
to archives for free.
‘Damned Souls and Turning Wheels’, the installation by
Warren Fahey and Mic Gruchy, the artistic and technical designer, perfectly fits into this exhibition of Songs of Survival
in a Precarious age . Memories of life on and around Cockatoo Island are evoked from images screened on the rough
hewn wall inside a stark, stone space on a hill above cells
used for solitary confinement. The ghosts of those who dwelt
on or around Cockatoo Island are brought to life by the songs
and voices of Phyl Lobl, Sally Sloane, Susan Colley, John
Dengate, Gary Shearston and Declan Affley, to name a few of
the singers . Much of the soundtrack would be familiar to the
older generation who attend folk festivals, but I doubt many
of the younger attendees at large festivals would be aware of
this heritage.
Unfortunately some of the viewers seem to think they can
take it like an impressionist painting with a quick look then
off to the next. Yet here is an opportunity to encounter almost
200 years of the island’s history with its use as a prison for
convicts. Among the first were bushrangers, but also indigenous people from the Eora and even Chinese migrants.
Famous bushrangers such as Frank Gardiner and Thunderbolt
were said to have been held in the cells. Part of the island
became a female reformatory called ‘Biloela’, where their
recorded ‘crime’ was often ‘ insolent language’!
Later it held homeless young males who were successfully
trained for naval service and between the two world wars, it
became a thriving industrial site for ship building and maintenance –‘turning steel how do you feel?’ [ Colin Dryden]- until
that function also passed and now it is used for backpacker
camping and art shows – hospitality and entertainment.
Warren acknowledges the sources for images and songs that
he and Mic weld so skillfully together. The raw material has
been moulded into an installation of international standing.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Folk Federation Of NSW 2009-2010
Happy Birthday to us:
I wish to thank all those involved
with the Folk Federation of NSW in
the last 12 months. Celebrating our 40th
year has bought together a wonderful
array of faces, new and old(ish) and
I hope we have “done good” in our
attempts to make something special of
our 40th year. To the “usual suspects”Coral – all things CORNSTALK
Julie – all things FOLK MAIL
Wayne – all things JAM.
We appreciate more than words can
say your ongoing work, it’s easy to take
for granted some things when they are
always there -and you are always there
– but you are not taken for granted.
To the CommitteeBruce, Christine, Dallas, Jim, Kate,
Margaret, Pam, Peter, Sandra, Terry
and Mary-Jane. Thankyou for a full and
rewarding year.
You are responsible forRewriting and updating our
Constitution (no mean feat!)
Taking on and dragging St George
bank into the present re our financial
needs (see Above)
Organising new printers for Cornstalk,
saving us substantial moneys.
Organising events in conjunction with
Lane Cove Council- entertaining people
and raising funds all at once.
Organising a fundraising concert
for the Declan Affley Youth Award
presented at this years National$2000.00 in total including funds held
in trust from a previous event. Workshops and events to help with the
sale of the Henry Lawson Song Book (
we also managed to rest back control of
all stocks from our previous distributor)
Organising the Monthly singing
sessions “Singing Out” at the Gaelic
club
2 x 40th anniversary concerts (Illawarra
and National folk festivals)
A very productive year and one we
should be proud of of in all respects.
To the performers, who supported
and help celebrate our 40th anniversary,
thankyou as well- Jason and Chloe
Roweth, John Dengate, Dave Desanti,
John Broomhall, Pat Drummond,
Karen Lynne, Bob and Margaret
Fagan, Bernard Bolan, The Lurkers,
Kate Delaney, The Wheeze and Suck
Band, Francesca Sidoti, Al Ward snd
Danny Watson for helping to MC at the
National
And in conjunction with this thanks
also go toDave Desanti and his team at the
Illawarra Folk Festival
Dave O’Neill and his team at the
National Folk Festival
The Gents at the Stockman’s Camp
(National)
For supporting us with concerts in our
40th year.
In The Future:
In the corridors of power (more like
around the dinner table with a glass of
wine, good food and good company) it
has been rumoured that a major festival
in NSW, possibly on Cockatoo Island is
on the drawing board. The committee
and other interested parties have been
doing research and asking questions re
this possibility. There are a number of
hoops to jump through and many more
questions to be asked and answered
but maybe the time has come have a
festival of our own again. The Folk
Federation of NSW was born out of the
Port Jackson Folk Festival and what
better way to give to our membership
than provide an event where we can
celebrate all aspects of “Folk”.
With this I’ll sign off on another
year as President. It has been a pleasure
and a privilege. Happy Birthday and
many happy returns. I suppose in the end we do this
because we love it- the friendships, the
creativity and the communityLet’s go surfing.
Enough said me thinks.

The Campfire Song
Ian MacDougall
The Tracks We Have Traveled
What happened to all those young folk singers in the folk
revival of the 1960s and ‘70s?
After the last festival at Cobargo, there were a few names
that brought memories to those who enjoyed singing in the
sixties, and still can, in spite of smoke in the bars and cafes.
Margaret Roadknight reminded us of the tremendous contribution of Malvina Reynolds, Brian Mooney recalled many
a song that had stirred those audiences and Ian MacDougall
led a workshop that had us all singing many of the favourite
songs with choruses, that were popular with folkies of that
period.
Ian also sang, in Chris Woodland’s themed concert of
Traditional Australian songs, a number of Henry Lawson’s
verses to which he had put tunes. Those who heard Ian sing
will know he still has a fine voice which is still very easy to
listen to. His CD: The Campfire Song, includes both songs
that Ian has written or have been folkies’ favourites for
decades. Some are evocative of the thoughtful mood that
settles on those gathered round a campfire while listening to
a true singer of traditional Australian songs. Others present
an historical reference or even a thoughtful comment about
a more recent event. The accompaniments are varied, but
all make delightful listening and the words are sung clearly
which is important as all are worth listening to. This is one of
those CDs that will refresh memories and that you will enjoy
replaying, so visit Ian MacDougall’s webpage: http://ianmacdougall.wordpress.com/
Find out more about Ian and his other CD which should
be in everyone’s collection :THE NEVER NEVER LAND
– songs of Henry Lawson as set to music and sung by Ian
MacDougall
As he says on his website,if you want a copy of the CD
and notes, drop me an email at [email protected] and
we’ll see what we can do. I keep stocks low, so there may be
a short wait while new CDs are made.

FOLK - The Australian/Tony Hillier
Rooted in the Country and Sing Us Anothery, Dirty as Buggery
The Celebrated Knackers & Knockers Band
Rouseabout Records
AS a legacy of the lewder side of Australia's artistic
heritage, award-winning folklorist Warren Fahey's risque
companion CDs hardly merit comparison with, say, Pompeii's
soft-porn frescoes or India's Kama Sutra temple wall carvings,
but they are of genuine historical value and certainly several
cuts above Kevin Bloody Wilson's albums. Not that there's
any scarcity of depravity or profanity contained in the 50plus combined tracks, as the R-rated stickers on each sleeve
denote. Most reflect an inordinately high level of political
incorrectness, and many have racist, homophobic and sexist
overtones that will offend.
Saliently, the songs and recitations have been collected
from an array of bona-fide sources. Sounding like out-take
from Fahey's box set Australia: Folk Songs & Bush Verse,
many pertain to the nation's rabble-rousing past, and record
colourful colloquial local language that is in danger of disappearing down the dunny.
Lavatorial humour reaches a literal nadir in ditties such as
Passengers Please Refrain While at the Station, Five Old Ladies, The Hole in the Elephant's Bottom and What's the Gentlest Tissue? Many of the raunchier ballads, some of which
could not be listed here even if space allowed, will be familiar
to members of Australia's sporting club fraternity, especially
participants in rugby singalong sessions.
Many were no doubt sung with gusto by men in shearing
sheds, droving camps and outback pubs of yore, and during
the world wars. References to pudenda, prostitution, horizontal recreation and antisocial diseases are rife throughout
Rooted in the Country and Sing Us Anothery, Dirty as Buggery. Musically, the songs are rarely less than interesting and
all are delivered with requisite swagger and no small measure
of vocal and instrumental expertise by Fahey (Major Bumsore) and his musical associates, the Celebrated Knackers and
Knockers Band (the Larrikins). Many of the accompanying
tunes will be recognised from other more polite and sedate
settings or as parodies of popular songs. Mature men (and
some women) are unlikely to be corrupted or subverted by
Rooted in the Country or Sing Us Anothery, Dirty as Buggery.
There is, however, a danger that exposure will evoke raucous
laughter and have listeners singing along with these hoary old
chestnuts. Certainly, Fahey's latest and bravest offering is in
danger of receiving a rap on the knuckles from the PC police.

Bruce has a rare talent . . . the best songwriter I have seen in a long time! (Eric Bogle)
That was absolutely f…ing brilliant! (Derek Guille, ABC Radio Melbourne)
Bruce Watson is a wordsmith, a teller of tales, a spinner of yarns. He is a contemporary
songwriter with lots of stories he tells with passion and integrity. An Australian folk hero!
He rocked the festival with a series of hysterically funny songs + heartwrenching songs.
