Day Camps at Camp Heidelberg
Heidelberg campers participate in a variety of traditional camp activities such as archery, games, and
outdoor challenges. Heidelberg campers can be dropped off and picked up at both our Stork Family
YMCA in Waterloo as well as the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA in Kitchener. Each morning at 9:00 the
campers are bussed from their home YMCA to our Heidelberg location just outside of Waterloo. Our
large open field space, pavilion and forest area allows this older age group to explore the outdoors.
Campers are bussed back each day to their home YMCA for an hour of swim time. The swim is
monitored carefully by our counsellors and YMCA certified instructor-lifeguards.
Thursday night Families are invited to a fun-filled campfire and optional camper sleepover. If your child
chooses not to sleepover they can simply be dropped off at the YMCA in the morning as usual.

Leaders in Action
The focus of the LIA program at the A.R. Kaufman Family YMCA and Stork Family YMCA is to help teens
build confidence and self-esteem, while developing skills required of a leader within the YMCA and our
community. Participants are required to take Level 1 followed by Level 2 of the Educational Program
before moving onto the Practical Program. Leadership is best developed by spreading Level 1, Level 2,
and Practical portions over different years rather than participating in all three programs during one
summer.
LIA Level 1
Participants will be introduced to the YMCA’s history and values. Activities will focus on leadership
techniques and problem-solving skills. Activities are meant to transition LIA Level 1 participants from
campers to leaders. Activities will focus on conflict resolution, communication styles, working with
children, building relationships and program safety.

Participants will continue building on the lessons learned in LIA level 1 and develop skills that will
help prepare participants for future employment in YMCA day camps. This session will focus more on
planning full programs and facilitating camp wide activities for day campers. Participants will learn how
to deliver age appropriate activities, while studying the principles of healthy child development, group
dynamics and understanding behaviours. Self-reflection as well as feedback from peers and counsellors
will help to build skills and give participants confidence in their leadership abilities.

LIA - Practical
This program is the final stage of our LIA
program. Participants who have completed
the Leaders in Action Educational portion will
have an opportunity to put their new skills and
knowledge into practice. Participants will be
paired with a counsellor for the duration of the
week to assist with day to day program planning
and facilitation of activities. Feedback from both
a self-evaluation and the counselor will help
to identify strengths and areas for continued
development. This camp is a great way for youth
to add valuable experience to their resumes and jump-start future volunteering opportunities at the
YMCA.
Participants are welcome to complete multiple weeks of LIA practical and will be placed with different
age groups and camps based on their interest and previous experience.
