All went on very well.
On top of that a dedicated temple staff and
helpers spent quite a number of hours in
arranging the proper logistics for the devotees.
That includes the preparation of food,
cleanliness of the environment, purchasing of
pooja materials, and many more.
Mr. Varathan, an Electrical Engineer by
profession, took charge of all the lighting and
decoration and with him a dedicated team of
electrical professionals contributed their time
to beautify the Temple premises. A great job
was done.
A dedicated ladies volunteer group under
the leadership of Mrs.Paramanathan had

of the Ganesha Chathurthi’, to prepare the

periodical intervals.
Mr. Prashanthan and Mr. Jana did a great
service making the relevant announcements
and manning the information counter. They
were planning the effective announcement
system, so that the devotees would be guided
through to do their prayers and offerings. The
announcements were both in Tamil and English.
Mr.Yathunanthan and his highly charged and
motivated sales team did a fantastic job at the
ticket counter. Without any weary face, the whole
team dedicated their time from morning to night
at the counter. Their pleasant approach and
helping attitude made many devotees chose
their delighted offering to the Lord Ganesh.
Mr.Pramadevan and his team took charge of
the Traffic controls and parking arrangements
for the devotees. It was really a challenging
part because of the scarcity of space around
the temple premises. They extended help to
the elderly devotees to get in and out of the
temple safely. That

They arranged the logistical and promotional
activities to those stalls. Many devotees visited
the stalls and spent their leisure time.
Mr.Selvakumar, Mr.Balaji, Mr.Manikam and their
team from the Saiva Sithantha School organized
a great exhibition center at the Temple. The
exhibition hall was fully packed from the time it
was opened from the morning till late evening.
This team had started their planning six months
before this day. It was well received by the
public.

students in the best way. They staged a great
devotional dance in front of Lord Ganesha
on the Chathurthi day.
Mrs.Swamynathan the Katong district
Representative did a great job with her
volunteer team in collecting donations from
the members. She dedicated her four or
five weekends and despite of her illness
she drove all around the Katong area and
completed her service with great result.
It was Mr. Kapilan the Assistant Temple
Secretary at the background of all the teams,
and motivating each and every member to
do their best and deliver their great services
to the devotees and to the community.
His dedication and devotion must be
commended.

different volunteer groups.
Ceremonies and Prayers
Devotees started to come into the temple
from 4am onwards. It was a very auspicious
day to every Hindu. The first God they pray is
Lord Ganesha. According to the sacred text,
Lord Ganesh appeared to this world on this
day. His appearance and grand grace had
changed the bad to good, the good to better
and the better to best in the world. It is a very
positive and encouraging day to Hindus. It is
a believe that on this day if a Hindu visits a
Lord Ganesha Temple, he would be blessed
with all the prosperity and peace in his life.
There were three Maha Ganapathy Homam
offered to the Lord Ganesh on that day. The

first one started at 4am, the second at 9.30am,
and the third was 4.00pm. Many devotees took
part by offering the ‘Poorna Ahuthi’ in the holy
fire.
Three holy ‘abishegams’ (showers) were offered
after each Maha Ganapathy Homam. There
again, a huge number of devotees took part
in the milk pot procession. Devotees carried
the milk pot on their head and made their
procession around the temple and offered the
Lord for the holy ‘abishegam’. Many devotees
and their families completed their vow with
their prayers.
Many devotees offered the ‘Mothaga Pirasatha
Aruchanai’ to the Lord Ganesh. It was stated
that most popular holy food offered to Lord
Ganesh is the ‘Mothagam’. So many devotees
preferred to buy a tray of ‘Mothagam’ and
offered them to the Lord, and those devotees
expressed their sense of satisfaction to the
Temple.
The whole temple was filled with the chanting
of Lord Ganesh’s holy names, the sacred Tamil
poems called ‘Thevarams’ and ‘Thirumurais’
were sung during important period of time.
Pon Muthukumaran, the ‘othuva-moorthi’ from
Temple of Madurai orchestrated those songs
with his magnanimous voice. Many devotees
did comment about it.
In the night, the ‘Panchamuga Vinayagar’s
procession was very colorful and majestic.
With hundreds of devotees around, and with

A Community salutes the Nation
Once again the National Day Celebrations at the
Temple attracted a large crowd of devotees who in
addition to taking part in the religious ceremonies
(Ganapathy Homam) to pray for the prosperity of
the Nation, were treated to a variety show and a
sumptuous lunch thereafter.
This year’s Guest of Honor, Mr Charles Chong, the
new MP for Joo Chiat, in his second visit to the temple
in 2 months, was impressed by the community’s
spirit and the warm welcome showered on him by
both the young and old of the community.
In his speech, Mr Charles Chong praised the
community for its engagement and contribution
to the Nation Building. Despite being a minority
community,
its new immigrants through the
Association’s activities was able to adapt and
integrate into the main stream society as observed
by him.
The variety show, showcasing of our children’s
talents from the Saiva Religious School, Music &
Dance Academy and the Raffles Dancers impressed
all guests present. The highlight of the 45 minute
concert was the pledge taking in Tamil and the
singing of the National Anthem.
The many children present were also happy that
the Guest of Honour agreed to pose for group
photos with them at the end of the show.
“Congratulations - The National Day event went very
well today. All the programmes selected were good.”

Bidding a Fond Farewell and
Warm Welcome
Sunday 10th July 2011 was an eventful night for
the Singapore Ceylon Tamils’ Association and Sri
Senpaga Vinayagar Temple members. A dinner was
held to bid farewell to Mr Chan Soo Sen former MP
and to welcome newly elected MP Mr Charles Chong
of Joo Chiat.
Our VIPs were welcomed with garlands. They also
received the traditional Hindu blessing of fire, sacred
pottu and a coconut from the priests after which they
walked round the temple.

A small gift to the less fortunate
The dinner included two brilliantly performed divine
dances by Ms Ano and Mrs Durga.
The first was an introductory speech by Mr. N.
Eliyathamby a member of the SCTA youth wing. He
described Mr Chan Soo Sen as a man of dedication
and passion who became so deeply involved in our
community that he joined SCTA as an associate life
member, the first Chinese to do so.
Our SCTA President, Dr R. Theyvendran spoke
fondly of him as a genuine friend other than being
a parliamentarian, who assisted us greatly in our
many challenges during the rebuilding of our unique
Temple, which is now a heritage site. He attributed

Blessing our MPs
Mr Chan who said he was greatly humbled by our
acceptance of him into our community, recounted
his experience as our MP. He praised our Sri
Lankan community for contributing significantly
to the development of modern Singapore in
spite of being small in size. He also urged us to
continue working closely with the Joo Chiat IAEC
even though we were no longer part of the Joo
Chiat Constituency.
Also, Mr Charles Chong was touched by our
invitation. He commended us for our achievement
of preserving our culture, tradition and religion
and promised that he will take up the invitation
to attend our functions. Although not our MP, he
offered his helping hand. Appreciation for Mr Chan’s contribution to our
community for the past decade was recognised
with a shawl and an award. Dr Theyvendran
presented them and read out the inscription: In

Service to Our Lord Ganesha
The temple cleaning programme on Sunday 3rd April, 2011 was a fantastic success.
More than 100 volunteers turned up with the purest of intentions – to serve Lord Vinayagar and the
community.
After the cleaning from 12.30pm to1.30pm – lunch was served.
It was indeed a rare joy to see so many who came with entire families to take part in the event. Some
even dragged their young toddlers along.
There was much fun, work, enjoyment and ‘the spirit of sharing’ - the Lord belongs to all.

Scientific and Spiritual aspects of Kalasam
A Talk by Sri Haran Aiya (Sri Chaitanyananda Natha Saraswathi) at Sri Senpaga Vinayagar
Temple on 19 August 2011
‘Kalasam or Kumbham’ is an integral part of all major Pujas in Hindu rituals. In this talk,
Sri Haran Aiya explained the scientific and spiritual aspects of a Kalasam and its various
components. Each component of the Kalasam has an esoteric significance that corresponds
to different parts of a Human Body. The Kurcham (Dharba Grass) represents the Hair, the
Coconut with turmeric represents the head, mango leaves represent the five senses, the
flowers represent the mind, the pot represents the body, the threads around the kalasam
represents the 72,000 nerve endings and the water inside the pot represents the blood.
Sri Haran Aiya then went on to explain the scientific aspects of the various ingredients of
the kalasam which include Turmeric, Cloves, Vettiver, Abhishekam Power and Water giving
its biological nomenclature and related benefits. Aiya then shared how water responds to
thoughts and vibrations by sharing the research findings by Dr Masaro Emoto, a Japanese
scientist who conducted various experiments on water crystals and their responses to words,
thoughts and vibrations.
Following the talk, Aiya enthralled the crowd with a soul stirring rendering of Bhajans and
Pancha Puranas – Thevaram, Thiruvasakam, Thiruvisaipa, Thirupallandu, Thirupuranam and
Thirupugazh, while also explaining the meanings of the verses in between.
The event came to a close after a very interesting Q &A session where Aiya answered with
ease a plethora of questions from the enthusiastic crowd of over 200 people.
“The wise learn many things from their enemies.”

MAHOTSAVAM THIRUVIZHA
The temple is sacred in as much as we make it
to be. Apart from marking out the ground and
infusing it with symbols, our activity is a direct
means of gathering our Gods. By performing
daily rituals and supplications, we collectively
invoke our deities to be present in our temple
and accept our offerings. The chanting and
spirited music serve to intensify the worship.
- By Sri Saravan Subramaniam
8 May 2011 - 17 May 2011
The Mahosatvam serves to reaffirm our
invocation. Every Temple holds its own
Mahotsavam.
At the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple, this
festival is celebrated over the course of 10 days,
grounding our daily rituals in a larger scale.
The first day begins with the kodiyetram or
flag-hoisting ceremony. Prior to the raising of
the flag, a Yaga Sala or ceremonial home is
constructed for the deities.
After which, pots are filled with water and
prayers are offered to invoke the presence of the
deities within them. The pots are subsequently
poured over the flagstaff thus sanctifying it. The
flagstaff (kodimaram) represents God and the
image of the mouse represents the individual
soul, bounded by the rope which twirls around
it, just as our souls are wrapped in their own
bondages of Anava (ego), Karma (deeds) and
Maya (illusion).
A yellow rope representing Thiruvarutshakti
(the power of God) is used to hoist the flag.
The raising of the flag represents our unity with
God once freed of our bondages. Across the
ten days, poojas are performed for the flagstaff
in the mornings and evenings. At the end of the
first day, there is the theertham or bathing of
the God. The priest and a chosen devotee offer
the deity pali (sacrifice) and yagam (offerings in
fire).
Apart from the daily poojas, other thiruvizha
(festivals) occur over the course of the ten days,

such as Vettai (hunting), Thaer (chariot) and
Theertha (bathing) thiruvizha. Vettai thiruvizha
is celebrated in honour of God hunting the
aforementioned bondages of our soul.
Thaer thiruvizha serves as a rejoinder for us
to worship sincerely and lovingly in order for
our lives to run smoothly. Theertha thiruvizha
occurs on the final day of the Mahotsavam. The
God is bathed and conveyed around the temple
in a procession. Thereafter, hymns are sung as
the deity rests on a gently swaying swing. After
the final pooja, the flag is lowered and placed
upon Nandi to be worshipped before the deity
circumbulates the temple once more before
being returned to the inner sanctum.
During the Mahotsavam, we remember the
sacred act of God inhabiting our realm and
in turn, the limitations of our realm. However,
through worship, we learn the nature of
transcendence, as evidenced in the teachings
of our rituals.
Through the five-fold acts of God, our souls
can shrug off their bondages and be free;
1.Creation, represented by the raising of the
flag
2.Preservation, experiencing the effects of our
Karma
3.Destruction, emphasized in Thaer and
Theerta thiruvizha
4.Concealment, the respite from our Karma as
evidenced in the Mahotsavam
5.Blessing, culminating in the final day’s
prayers
“God loves to help him who strives to help himself.”

This year’s Mothers’ day was celebrated with yet
another outing, this time, within Singapore, on
Sunday 24th April 2011.
About 60 participants from children to the elderly
gathered at Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple at
about 3p.m. After being served tea, we were
taken by 2 coaches to Suntec city to experience
Singapore’s famous amphibious tour, the “Duck
Tour”. The atmosphere in the coaches was electric
with everyone joining in a sing-along session.
The hour-long Duck Tour brought us close to
Singapore’s famous skyline, historical landmarks
and gorgeous bay view. It was great to hear many
reminiscing of times past as we were driven

past famous sites. Following this we were taken to
Marina Bay Sands where everyone was treated to the
fantastic view from the Sky Park. We had timed it just
right so that we were able to take in the panoramic
view during daylight hours as well as the magnificent
night view.
We then made our way to Ceylon Sports Club where
we feasted on a scrumptious buffet while being
entertained by solo renditions of old songs by some
of the more sporting participants. The evening ended
with the cutting of the cake by the “senior” mothers.
What a wonderful outing with everyone thoroughly
enjoying themselves! Kudos to the Ladies Committee
who once again went all out to make this a truly
memorable tribute to mothers!!!

SRI SENPAGA VINAYAGAR TEMPLE MUSIC & DANCE ACADEMY
Music Competition
16 July 2011
Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple Music & Dance Academy
took pleasure in organizing its very own Vocal &
Instrumental Competitions on 16 July 2011. This is the
first time the academy had organized one for its very own
students and academy teachers’ private students.
Music & Dance Academy’s objective is to identify Talent,
Promote and Encourage them. Students and Music lovers
supported us by actively participating in these competitions.
The program started on a divine note with an invocation
to Lord Ganesha which was sung by Soumya Ojha and
Shubhra Ojha and followed by the lighting of the lamp by
our Academy Chairman, Mrs Kamala Das.
Both Instrumental & Vocal Competition was held at 2
different venues, Kalyana Mandapam and Level 3 Centre
Hall.
Instrumental comprised of various instruments such as
Tabla, Violin, Mridangam & Keyboard.
As for Vocal (Solo Category), there were 4 divisions :
(1) Juniors Category A – Aged 4 to 7 years
Category B – Aged 8 to 12 years
(2) Juniors
(3) Seniors Category A – Aged 13 to 17 years (4) Seniors
Open Category – Aged 18 years & above
We also had Vocal ‘Group’ Category:.
(1) ‘DUO’ – Group of 2 members (2) ‘TRIO’ – Group of 3
members (3) (1) ‘GROUP’ – Group of 4 members
Though being organized for the first time, we had in total a record number of 143 participants (85 Vocal) and (58

their talents. We conducted 2 sessions successfully.
Session 1 – Juniors 9am to 1 pm Session 2 – Seniors 2 to 4.30pm
All participants were provided lunch & certificate of participation.
This event would not have been possible without the support from our SCTA President Dr R Theyvendran, our Academy

Students and our judges Mr Theeban, Mr Guhan, Ms Thakshayani & Mrs Bavani.

SSVT Music and Dance Academy's
teacher Mr. Lazar Sebastine won 1st
prize in the UK International Song
Writing Contest.
Mr. Lazar Sebastine has been teaching
violin and keyboard at the Music and
Dance Academy for the past eight years.
Our heartiest congratulations to him.
The album review appeared on the
Straits Times/Business Times on
September 2nd 2011. In this album's
9th song called An Indian folk song
meets Jazz was composed by him.
Siva Mahendran – SCTA’s Education Secretary has published his first book.
Titled “REFLECTIONS – body, mind and soul” - it is just that - a celebration of his thoughts, emotions
and beliefs which have moulded his life over the years. Those years were full of personal experiences,
comprising the good and the bad. It was a truly learning journey for him.
The main objective of writing the poems in this book is to give back to society what it has given and
taught him over this time. He believes readers would also likewise reflect and appreciate life on earth
and “strive for excellence in all endeavours and fields of human existence.”
Siva Mahendran is not just an idealistic dreamer. Besides academic
credentials, he is a well-respected Consultant, Mentor, Professional
Counsellor and Trainer in human resources development.
The book is a good buy and should be in the possession of every
home.
Cost of the book is only $10/- for the first 100 copies only on a first
come first served basis. The book will be priced at $14/- thereafter and
orders could be placed with Mr Siva Mahendran at email addresses:
[email protected] or [email protected] or sms or call him
directly at 90600755.

The Drama Nite could not
have been possible without
the enthusiastic and devoted
efforts of Mr B Ganendran, who
wrote the script for Raja Raja
Cholan and Ekan Anekan and
adapted the plays Mazhai and
Pillai Azhutha Kanneer. He also
mustered a team of teachers,
parents and made it a point
to fetch students who had
difficulty coming for practises.
His was a labour of love – a
love for Sri Senpaga Vinayagar
and drama in which field he is
second to none in Singapore.
The Drama Nite unearthed a
lot of hidden talent that bodes
well for the future, and makes
us want to continue with the
Drama Nite in the years to
come.
The success of the Drama
Nite is a further illustration of
the strong bonds between
teachers, students and parents
and we are glad that all this is
happening under the guidance
and benevolent leadership of
the Singapore Ceylon Tamils’
Association and Sri Senpaga
Vinayagar.

REPORT ON THE SVT SAIVA SAMAYA SCHOOLS’
PERFORMANCE IN THE 31st TIRUMURAI MANADU
COMPETITION – 2011
Thirumurai Villuppaattu Performance
This year’s competition was
held over 3 days at 2 different
venues – the Queensway
Sri Muneeswaran Temple at
Queensway, and at the Sri
Senpaga Vinayagar Temple at
Ceylon Road.
We did exceptionally well in
the Drama Competition, with
our two plays receiving high
praise from the judges and the
organisers.
Harshita N Balaji, a Primary 2
student was adjudged the Best
As has been the trend, more Performer in the Thiruneetrup
children are taking part in
these competitions, testifying
to their popularity among the
14 Temples. The most keenly
contested event seems to be
the Thevaram Recital with all
14 Temples taking part.
The School with a large base
of students in the Nursery,
Kindergarten
and
Lower
Primary Classes did very well
in the Colouring and Speech
Competitions. However, our
success rate was not so
high in the Maruvedam and
Thiruvedam Competitions.

The School’s Villuppaattu

The School’s policy is to
encourage as many students
as possible to take part in
these
competitions
and
approximately 50% took part.
I wish to place on record
the dedicated service of the
teachers who held numerous
practices in the evenings and
to the parents who encouraged
their children to take part and
brought them for the various
practises. They are responsible
for the wonderful results at the
Competitions.

The master in the art of living makes little distinction between
his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his
body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion.
He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of
excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether
he is working or playing. To him he’s always doing both.

SUMANGALI POOJAI
31-07-2011
The annual Sumangali Poojai is one of the
very auspicious poojas for ladies.
In any family though both husband and
wife are jointly responsible, it is the lady
who carries out most of the traditional roles
– mother, wife and as such is held in high
regard.
In that respect for any ceremony it is the
married (sumangali) woman who is given
auspicious status and this is still being
carried out. By doing so it is a belief that
Mahaluxumi will bless them.
The most important of such ceremonies is
the Sumangali Poojai. Those who cannot
perform it at home, usually do it in a
Temple. This year’s poojai was conducted
on Sunday 31 July 2011 at our Sri Senpaga
Vinayagar Temple.
At 9 am., special abishegam and prayers
were performed for Sri Manonmani Ambal,
after which she was placed in a pedestal
at the Vasantha Mandapam and there
was a special ceremony conducted for
her. Thereafter, approximately sixty ladies
performed a Vilakku Pooja. This was
conducted by our Chief Priest Sri Surya
Prabhakara Kurukkal with assistant Priest
Sri Sabesan Kurukkal demonstrating the
correct procedures.
At the end of the poojai Mr & Mrs
Sivasithambaram blessed and distributed
auspicious items and a sari each for all the
participants. The ceremony ended with
lunch for all.
We thank Mrs Jeyaranjini Mahendran
and her ladies group for arranging and
coordinating the Sumangali Poojai.

ASTROLOGY – BELIEVE IT OR NOT (Part-2)
Astrology is a mystic science, well it will
continue to be until science become
advanced enough to decode the mystic
formulas. Astrology is not completely
mystic; by today’s science we can call
it 50% science and 50% mystic. We
are going to analyze about the 50%
scientific part and leave out the mystic
part. The objective is to enlighten
people who still believe astrology is 0%
science. In this edition we are going to
see what a ZODIAC is.

A horoscope of a person is the position
West
Sky above Earth
of planets at the time of the birth of
the individual as observed from earth.
10
5
The positions of planets are mapped in
circular base called Zodiac. As most of
us know, Zodiac consists of 12 signs
which are also called as constellations.
9
8
7
6
Why did our ancestors choose this set
.
of 12 signs or constellation to map the
position of planets? What is special
which they can tell the same position where
about the Zodiac? Well let us get deeper and ever they are. Hope the need for a common
logical.
reference frame is clear.
To mark the position of an object, the foremost
thing is a reference frame, i.e. the position of
planet has to be marked against something,
that something is the zodiac. Let us take three
persons (A, B, C) standing in a line side by
side. For person-A, person-B is standing to the
left, but for person-C, person-B is standing to
the right, from which we can understand that
position is relative. Let us see one more example,
For the person in London, at 1200 GMT, the sun
is above his head, if he calls his friend in India at
that time and ask for the position of the sun, the
friend in India would tell him, Sun is at the west,
another friend in Singapore would tell him that
he is having his dinner. Though the position of
Sun is same at that point in time, the difference
in observation is due to difference in location.
If all three want to communicate on the same
term, they need a common reference using
There is one more major hurdle when we
thing about plotting position of planets on a
piece of paper, planets are moving in a three
dimensional space, how is it possible to map it
in a two dimensional piece of paper? Asking this
question is the key to further understanding. It
is possible, as we do in a horoscope, because
of one astronomical fact. The fact is that all the
planets from mercury to Saturn including earth
revolve around our Sun in the same plane. i.e.
the path of earth around Sun and path of Jupiter
around Sun lie in the same plane, so does is
that of Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn.
Let me stress the point which was mentioned
earlier, we are plotting the position of planets
as observed from earth. We are talking about
influence of planets on human life. Since we are
on earth it is logical that the point of observation

is earth. There is a wrong misconception that
Astrology supports geocentric theory, logical
answers to prove that our ancestors knew that
all planets were revolving around the Sun will
form the basis for the next edition.
Let us come back to the reference frame. The
properties of the reference frame should be that
is should encompass our entire solar system and
it should be big enough so that the position on
planets observed with this reference shouldn’t
change where ever we are located on earth.
Zodiac is the one with all these qualities. You
can imagine our solar system as circles(path
of planets around Sun) with Sun as the center,
Zodiac is the big circle around our solar system.
Zodiac consist of 12 constellations (group of
stars) each spanning 30 degrees (360 divided
by 12). Each constellation has a unique set of
stars forming a unique shape which help us to
easily identify the constellation or sign.
The following amazing facts make the Zodiac
the perfect frame of reference.
• As mentioned earlier, the path of revolution
of all planets around the sun lie in the
same plane. Amazingly Zodiac also lies in
the same plane.
• We (our solar system) are located in the
center of the Zodiac.
• The diameter of the solar system is
negligible when compared to the diameter
of the Zodiac. As the size of earth and
other planets are a dot compared to the
size of the Zodiac, the observation on the
position of planets is same when viewed
from any point on the earth.
Let me try to explain using an example. The
chart shown aside is the horoscope for
Singapore latitude on Aug-8th, 8pm, i.e. the
position of the planets as seen from Singapore
at that time and date. Some of you might ask,
can we this map to locate the planets in sky,
of course you can star gaze using this chart.
To help you read the chart, you need to know
some fundamental things. “As” in the chart
means the eastern point at that point in time,
in this case “As” falls on sign number 11; 180
degrees from there is the west which is sign 5.
Starting from East moving anticlockwise is the
signs above us, i.e sign-8 will be right above
our head.
On Aug-1st, if you step outside your house and
look at the western horizon, you can observe a
brilliant white beautiful star like object, which
is planet Venus. In the chart you see Venus
close the west horizon in Sign-6. Slightly above
Venus, you can observe Saturn in dull white.
Both are easily visible to the naked eye. Very
close to Saturn you need to concentrate little
harder to observe our Mars in faint red color.
Each of the signs(boxes) are numbered from
1 to 12. Each sign is a constellation. Sign-6
is Virgo. We say Venus is in Virgo at that time
because we see Venus in the background of
Virgo. Similarly we say Mercury is in Leo(Sign-5)
because we see Mercury in the background of
Leo. Hence all the positions we say are with
respect to observation from earth, because
we are talking about the influence of planets
on human life on earth. From where ever we
are on earth, we can observe Venus in the
constellation of Virgo, and similarly all planets
will be seen at the same sign where ever we
are on earth, only Ascendant (AS) will change
depending on our location. Amazing right, do
you thing our ancestors chose Zodiac as the
reference frame with out knowing all these fact.
A quote from B.V.Raman to conclude with:
“Those who know Astrology can only indicate in a way what will take place in future. Who else,
except the Creator, Brahma, can say with certainty what will definitely happen?” - B. V. Raman

The “Kara” New Year
The “Kara” New Year began on
14th April 2011 at the auspicious
time of 2.03pm. Traditionally,
it is a time for celebrating new
and prosperous beginnings.
According to Hindu belief on
this day the creator of the world,
Lord Brahma started creation –
the first day of ‘Chittirai’ in the
Tamil calendar.
Besides prayers, celebrations
and the doing of good deeds
include feasting; gift-giving and
visiting of homes.
Sri Lankan Tamils observe the
traditional new year in April with
the first financial transaction
known as the ‘Kai-vishesham’
where elders gift money to the
unmarried young, particularly
children as a token of good luck.
The event is also observed with
the ‘arpudu’ or the first ploughing
of the ground to prepare for
the new agricultural cycle. The
‘punya-kaalam’ or auspicious
time when the sun reportedly
shifts from Meena raasi to
Mesha raasi is considered ideal
to commence new activities on
a favorable note.
Sri Lankan Tamils begin the
year with a herbal bath with
‘maruthu-neer’ with ingredients
for good health. The game of
‘por-thenkai’ or coconut wars
between youth is played in
villages through the Tamil north
and east of the island while
cart races are also held [6]. The
festive Puthandu season in April
is a time for family visits and the
renewal of filial bonds.
