2007-08 Roster
Head Coach Bob Davis
In just two years, Bob Davis has done a remarkable job of
taking a perennial doormat program in the American Southwest
Conference and turning it into conference championship
contender. For his efforts he was named the ASC East Co-Head
Coach of the Year in 2006-07.
Davis’ second season was the program’s best in the last 20
years and only the third winning season in that time. The Jackets finished in
second place in the ASC East and made their first ASC Playoff appearance. On
Feb. 1, 2007, Davis and his team upset #4 Mississippi College, the highest rated
team ever beaten by LeTourneau, 64-62. He picked up his 400th career college
coaching victory on Feb. 8, 2007 against UT-Tyler.
In two years, Davis has coached a Freshman of the Year, Newcomer of the
Year, six All-ASC East players, three all-Freshman Team players and one allDefensive Team member.
Davis came to LeTourneau from Liberty University and the NCAA Division I
level where he was the associate coach for three seasons. His three seasons at
Liberty were some of the best in school history. During the 2002-03 campaign,
Liberty experienced the third best turnaround in the nation. In 2003-04, the team
won the Big South Conference Championship and made the NCAA Tournament
as a #16 seed.
Prior to coaching at Liberty, Davis was a 15-year head coach at Eastern
Wyoming College, a junior college located in Torrington, WY. He is the
winningest coach in the school’s history and averaged 21 wins per season. His
teams were the Wyoming Conference Champions nine times and were Region
IX Champions twice. Eight different times Davis has been named the Region IX
or WCCAC Coach of the Year. He was also the national Fellowship of Christian
Athletes camp basketball director at Wyoming for seven years.
Davis began his coaching career at the high school level in 1974 and quickly
moved up the ladder. He coached the Chinese Junior Olympic Team for eight
weeks at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center in 1979-80. He served
as an assistant coach at Colorado State University and was a head coach for six
years at Chadron State College.
Assistant Coach Michael Lewis
Michael Lewis is gaining a reputation as a top assistant coach
and recruiter in the American Southwest Conference. He is
entering his third season as Bob Davis’ top assistant. Their relationship dates back to Lewis’ playing days at Eastern Wyoming
College where Davis coached Lewis.
Lewis is a strong recruiter who has brought in three
ASC East Division all-Freshman Team members, one ASC East Freshman of
the Year and an ASC East Newcomer of the Year in his first two seasons.
An all-state point guard at Aurora Central High School in Colorado, Lewis
played a year at both Florida International University and Metro State after
playing at EWC. He served as team captain at EWC and led the team to its first
Region IX tournament championship.
After his playing days, he coached at Aurora Central for five years and has
worked numerous Denver Nuggets basketball camps run by NBA head coaches
Bernie Bickerstaff and Mike Brown.
In addition to recruiting, Lewis’ main responsibility is guard play. His focus is
on defense and instilling floor leadership skills to the guards.

We have a New Name, but still have the same
Great Staff and Quality Service!
After finishing in second place in the American Southwest
Conference East Division last year, the LeTourneau University
men’s basketball team was shown some respect by the rest of
the conference when they were picked to finish in second place
in the ASC 2007-08 Preseason Men’s Basketball Poll voted
on by head coaches, sports information directors and media
members.
The YellowJackets enter the season with high expectations
after going 15-10 last year and advancing to the conference
playoffs for the first time since joining the conference in 1998.
The team is looking for its first back-to-back winning seasons
since going 18-11 during the 1970-71 campaign and 19-10 the
following year. “The second place pick is an honor considering
where the program has been in recent years,” said head coach
Bob Davis, the 2006-07 ASC East Co-Head Coach of the Year.
At first glance, it would appear that the Jackets will be a
tough team to handle and might even be able to give two-time
defending ASC champion Mississippi College a run for first
place in the East. The Jackets return their top four scorers
and eight of their top nine players from last season. Juniors
Dewones Smith and Dusty Evers head line a strong group of
returnees that includes ASC East Newcomer of the Year Jayme
Bradley and all-Freshman Team member JJ Rockmore. “The
pick is probably justified,” said Davis, “because of our returnees
and how hard they have worked in the off season.”
Dewones Smith, an ASC East First Team guard selection last
year, averaged 15.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game while
showing off a much improved perimeter game. He drained

53 three-pointers
and led the team in
three-point percentage
(36.1%). After two
strong seasons, Smith
should garner strong
consideration for allRegion and all-America
honors. Smith will
likely eclipse 1,000
career points this year
and has taken over the
leadership role with
Evers.
Dusty Evers earned
Second Team ASC
East honors last year
and led the team in
scoring and rebounding
Dusty Evers
for the second straight
season. He was the
team’s most consistent
player a year ago averaging 15.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per
game while shooting 45% from the field. At 6’8, Evers has a
strong inside-outside game that includes three-point range.
He has put on nearly 35 pounds since the beginning of his
freshman year and should be a strong force on the inside.
The Jackets will have a deep and experienced bench which
means Davis may never have the same starting line-up two
games in a row. Along with Smith, Bradley and Rockmore;
sophomore Jesse Hayes and freshman Chase Pullen will work
into the guard rotation. Sophomores Zac Majors and Matt
McLaughlin will also vie for time in the front court. Sophomore
forwards Marcel Louimeus and Bo Ostarticki are much improved
and will be joined by sophomore Will Smith and junior transfer
Ricky Harris on the front line. The X-factor for the team will be
how quickly Davis’ son, junior college transfer Josh Davis, can
get back in the rotation after off-season surgery.
When asked how well the team will do this year, Bob Davis
said, “Our leadership and composure on the floor will determine
how far we go.”
Season Preview
With only one winning season in the past 20 years, the
2006-07 YellowJacket basketball team was not given much of
a chance to compete for an American Southwest Conference
Playoff spot. In fact, the team was picked a distant sixth in the
ASC Preseason Coaches/Media Poll. Head coach Bob Davis
and his squad were undeterred.
The YellowJackets opened the season
against a top 25 NAIA team, Jarvis
Christian College. The Jackets trailed by
as many as 18 points in the game, but
junior college transfer Jayme Bradley put
the team on his shoulders and hit 7-of-10
three-pointers and led the team with 25
points in a dramatic 84-81 victory that was
a portent of things to come in the season.
The Jackets opened the season 2-0
Jayme Bradley
before ASC West Division power McMurry
University came to town. McMurry took
control of the game from the opening tip and showed the young
LeTourneau squad what a good team looked like in a 73-61
loss. Two days later, the team welcomed Hardin-Simmons
University to town and held on for a 61-60 win as James Peters’
last second shot popped out of the hoop. Dusty Evers’ 23 points
on 10-of-15 shooting led LeTourneau.
The 3-1 start had the team ready for their first road trip of
the season, but it turned out to be a disaster. First, the Jackets
wilted in the second half against an experienced Sul Ross team
and then they were blown out of the gym by Howard Payne,
95-62 in their worst loss of the season.
With a record of 1-3 in the ASC, the team traveled to archrival East Texas Baptist and righted the ship with a 72-62 win.
Evers scored a season high 29 points while Bradley added 17
thanks to five three-pointers. After the ETBU win, the team
returned home and won back-to-back games against ConcordiaAustin and Mary Hardin-Baylor. LETU trailed Concordia by 10
points at halftime, but thanks to 46 points from Evers and Smith,
they prevailed in overtime, 88-79. The Crusaders proved to just
as tough, but the Jackets were able to hold onto a 71-68 win as
freshman JJ Rockmore came of the bench to score 18 points on
7-of-8 shooting.
After a loss at Austin College, the Jackets started the new
year on the road. First, freshman Jesse Hayes sparked the
team to a 69-63 comeback win with 14 second half points.
Then, they cruised to an easy 89-75 win at Schreiner as Smith
was a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range.
The team kept things rolling with another win over ETBU,
84-73 as they scored a season best 56 points in the first half.
Year in Review
The ASC win streak reached seven games after Smith capped
a 32-point performance with a game-winning three-pointer with
14 seconds left in the game to give the team an 86-84 win over
University of the Ozarks.
The winning streak finally ended with a 70-67 loss at UT-Tyler,
the only loss on the season in games decided by five points or
less. The losses continued to mount on the road with a 54-40
loss at UT-Dallas and then a 72-51 loss at then #5 ranked
Mississippi College.
Sitting at 8-5 in the conference, the
Jackets got back on the winning track with
a solid win at Louisiana College. Then on
February 1, the team registered possibly
the biggest win in school history. Then #4
Mississippi College came to town and the
Jackets came back from five points down
in the final 1:30 and won on a last second
tip-in by Rockmore, 64-62.
JJ Rockmore
After the great win, the team had a let
down against Louisiana College losing
76-67. They bounced back the following week with two great
defensive efforts against UT-Tyler and UT-Dallas limiting each
team to 54 points and getting two important ASC victories.
The final week of the season featured a rare non-conference
game at Jarvis Christian and saw the team lose, 95-81. The
team traveled to Ozarks for the final game of the regular season
needing a win to clinch second place in the East Division and
they came away with an emphatic, 77-53 victory.
In their first ever post season ASC appearance, the Jackets
were ice cold from the field and lost to
Hardin-Simmons, 74-65.
The year proved to be a great
success. Bob Davis was named the
ASC East Division Co-Head Coach of the
Year. Dewones Smith earned First Team
ASC East honors and Dusty Evers earned
Second Team honors. Jayme Bradley was
named the East Division Newcomer of
Dewones Smith the Year and Honorable Mention honors.
Marcus Coleman was named to the alldefensive team and was Honorable Mention. JJ Rockmore was

Dale A. Lunsford, Ph.D., became the sixth president of
LeTourneau University on July 1, 2007 after a national search
by the Board of Trustees. Lunsford joined the LeTourneau
University family after years of service with The University of
Texas, The University of Tulsa and Oklahoma State University.
Lunsford was associate dean and director of undergraduate
programs at The University of Tulsa’s College of Business
Administration. The University of Texas at Tyler led the state
in enrollment growth during Lunsford’s years there as vice
president.
Lunsford, and his wife, Marsha, have been married over
twenty years and have two daughters: Rachel and Hannah.
Dr. Dale
Lunsford,
President
Dr. Duane Trogdon

department has seen
a resurgence since
he joined the staff in
2004. He has been
involved in collegiate
athletics for the past 30+ years and
served as athletic director at Huntingdon College (Ala.) for four years.
He has been the head coach for
baseball, basketball, football and golf
at the collegiate level. He also played
baseball for his alma mater, Southwest
Baptist University (Mo.). He has an

wellness classes.
Mary Ann Otwell, in her
ninth year as assistant
athletic director and
senior women’s administrator and 15th year
at LeTourneau, retired
six seasons ago as the
head women’s basketball coach. She is
among only a handful of coaches who
have won four national championships, two at LeTourneau and two from
the junior college ranks. Otwell also
coached at Stephen F. Austin State
University and Panola Junior College.
Shane Meling is in his
fifth year as the Sports
Information Director
at LeTourneau. Prior
to coming to Texas,
he was the graduate
assistant SID at Slippery Rock University in
Pennsylvania.
He is a former NCAA Division III
student-athlete at Grove City College
where he was all-conference in both
basketball and track and field.
During his tenure at LeTourneau, he
has also served as an official scorer
for the Shreveport Sports and the
Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings.
He is an active member of CoSIDA
serving as a District Coordinator for its
Academic All-America program and is
a national voter for the D3Kicks.com
website.
Portia Phillips is in
her fifth year as the
Head Athletic Trainer
at LeTourneau. She
has nearly 20 years
of athletic training
experience.
She began her career
at her alma mater,
East Texas State University. In 1997,
she was one of two African American
women credited with becoming the
first to be nationally certified as athletic
trainers in Texas. After four years as
the assistant trainer, she became the
head’s women’s trainer at Louisiana
Tech University. She became the first
African American female athletic trainer to make it to the NCAA Women’s
Basketball Final Four in 1999. She
was awarded the LETU Shining Star
Award in 2006.
