We also congratulate Mr Noel Kelly on receiving the Old
Boys’ Medal.
Last night I spoke of a concept known as “God’s Traces”. I
include an excerpt from my address.
I reference a Jesuit priest here, Fr Ross Jones, as he speaks of
a Jesuit tradition in finding God in all things. He refers to the
moments where God reveals himself indirectly and he calls
these signs – “God’s Traces”.
Where do I see God’s Traces?
• I see it when past students return to share their story and
to show their gratitude for the education received at St
Edmund’s.
• I see this when the Choir performs.
• I see this when enrolling students; the eagerness with which
they look forward to high school.
• I see this when I visited the Year 11 retreats and saw the
genuine care and concern that the students had for each
other.
• I see it when Mum and Dad are so proud of their son as he
scores his first run for the College in the 13C Cricket team.
• I see this when our Seniors play handball with our Year 8
students.
• I see “God’s Traces” here within our unique community
tonight.
Year 11 Leadership
On Friday, prior to the Year 11 Social, our students will be
involved in selecting College leaders for 2015. Three guest
speakers support this process: Mr Tim Young, Mr Gerard
Pender and Mr Michael Grieve. All give input on aspects
of Leadership. I thank Ms Baker, Mr Carr and the House
Deans for supporting this process.

Year 12 Exams
As a community we wish our Seniors all the best as they move to exam block. For many young people the final few weeks can be
difficult as they are both excited and nervous about the future. I do insist that all students show respect for the College in leaving. At
St Edmund’s we do all that we can to assist the boys and give them a meaningful farewell. We need this respect reciprocated. We do
need parent support with this as well.
Best wishes to all Seniors in the coming weeks!

2013 COLLEGE DUX - Ben Winton and Matthew Wildie (dual winners). Ben and Matt were OP1 students in 2013 and are studying a Bachelor of
Engineering at QUT, each having each received a Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship based on their school academic achievements. QUT also offers a Dean’s
Scholars Program for a small number of outstanding students in Science and Engineering. Dean’s Scholars are an elite group of students with top OP
scores and leadership potential, this leadership fostered through industry experience, international exchange programs and mentoring. Recently both
Ben and Matt have been awarded a Dean’s Scholar, having both achieved a Grade Point Average of 7 for their Year 1 Semester 1 Engineering studies. To
have two St Edmund’s awarded a QUT Dean’s Scholar is a significant achievement for these young men and for St Edmund’s College.

Era for Change
Timor Leste Apprenticeship Sponsorship
In 2013 the College has linked with other EREA schools
in Queensland in an initiative called Era for Change. It is
a collective group, facilitated by students and guided by
teachers that promote the awareness of a specific justice
issue. Specifically this year we have focussed on Asylum
Seekers and in particular, the injustice of keeping children
in detention centres including organising a Detention for
Detention Day. They have collaboratively worked with
Edmund Rice International so that a single issue, viewed
through the lens of justice, has been promoted by over
10000 students. There is still much work to do and the
students are looking forward to the challenges of 2014.
Under the guidance of the Morgan House captains and
Mr David Mills, the students from Morgan house raised a
significant amount of money which they will steer towards
sponsoring a student from Timor to undertake 1 year
of trade training. Based on the success of Jack Litzow’s
sponsorship (Year 12 2013), Mr Mills and the students
will direct the money towards another suitable candidate.
The candidate is selected by the Christian Brothers in
Timor and is usually steered towards an individual who
demonstrates a natural aptitude and high motivation for
the trade industry. This is another way that we continue to
walk in solidarity with the great people of Timor. Well done
Mr Mills and the Morgan House Men.
Remembrance Day
At 11.00am on the 11th November the world stops to
commemorate what was once called Armistice Day. Now
known as Remembrance Day it is a day when we stop to pay
respect to the fallen and injured in war and the significance
of the sacrifice our defence forces made and continue to
make for our political and social freedom. On Monday
the staff and students will gather to remember and offer
thanksgiving for those who have made such a sacrifice.
It is significant that we can pay tribute in particular, to
the individuals and families in the St Edmund’s College
community who have served our country in our armed
forces and pray for those who continue to serve in areas
like Afghanistan. The sons of servicemen and women
in our community have been selling poppies in the past
couple of days and will continue to do so until Monday
afternoon. It would be wonderful to see all 300 poppies
go.
Along with our Vinnies collection we have also been asking
for donations for care packs for some soldiers currently
serving overseas. We were able to put together a number
of packs including for some dogs. These will be packaged
up and sent in the next week or so.

INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY
CURRICULUM
SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOCCER PROGRAM
YEAR 11
Term Three may be a distant memory for most,
however for four Eddie’s gentlemen the term
proved to be fruitful in more ways than one.
Upon being approached to assist with some
active Soccer coaching for a local Ipswich
Special Olympics team, the students did not
think twice about helping out.
Playing and training out of the Ipswich Knights
Football Club in Bundamba, the students were
very familiar with every blade of grass as they
have had a long acquaintance with the club as
junior footballers.
The students turned from players to assistant
coaches as they dribbled around markers and
slotted goal after goal. Along the way, Lorenz
Ryan, Hayden Rumble, Camden Hilman,
Joshua Jedrzewski and guest appreances from
McKenzie Gardiner picked up some valuable
skills in coaching, along with improved
tolerance and patience; whilst at the same time
embracing one of the EREA touchstones in
promoting ‘Inclusive Community’- fostering
right relationships and committed to the
common good for all involved.
It is through the actions of the young Eddie’s
gentlemen that we remember that through time
and service we continue to grow as individuals;
in the hope that we have not only shared a
rewarding experience with others; and on this
occasion taking away the gift of friendship and
the appreciation of what we have.
We applaud and thank the fine Eddies’ men for
their time, effort and patience displayed over
the many cool Monday evenings which were
given up to assist the very appreciative Special
Olymics Soccer players and organisers.
Gents, you are all a true testament to what it
means to be an Eddies’ gentleman.
Mr Bernie Wong, Director of Service Learning
In Football We Trust – true Eddies’
gentlemen; Lorenz Ryan, Hayden Rumble,
Camden Hillman and Joshua Jedrzejewski
This week I have continued interviewing Year 11 students.
It is a pleasure to work with the boys to set academic
goals, discuss their aspirations and devise strategies for
improvement. Also this week, Mrs Fergus and I had
morning tea with twenty-five of our high performing
OP and IP Year 11 students to celebrate their success to
date and to encourage them as they move towards end
of semester exams. Next week there will be a similar
morning tea for our successful Employment Pathway
students.
EXAMS AND GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE AWARDS
All students have just a few weeks to be the very best
student they can be for 2014. There is a need to work
hard for this short time and to then enjoy the long,
relaxing summer holidays. Our boys are given the best
of academic opportunities. Self discipline with regards to
study is the fundamental to success. Practice of questions
is vital, committing knowledge to memory is crucial and
spending time studying are the attributes that successful
students exhibit.
Students need to work hard in recalling facts and
developing understanding. Examinations for Years 8,
9, 10 and 11 are still to come. Please see my previous
newsletters for exam hints. These tips will appear on the
notice board outside my office and on the Student Portal
under Curriculum. The Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards
for Semester 2 are decided on the end of semester results
and are awarded at the beginning of 2015. I remind
parents that St Edmund’s College also subscribes to the
Enhanced Learning Educational Services website.

All students need to study hard for success.
ABSENT DURING EXAMS AND HOLIDAYS
Any student absent for an examination requires parents
to contact the College on the day of the absence. Holidays
should not be taken during the exam period.
As I am now going on leave I take this opportunity to
wish all students every success for their examinations
and to wish all families a happy and relaxing holiday. May
the peace of the Christmas season be yours and may you
enjoy a wonderful and holy Christmas. I look forward to
working with you and your sons in 2015.
Best Wishes.

Thursday’s Awards Night closed with what I believe is one
of Eddies’ most uplifting traditions, the Year 12 Choir.
Thank you once again to Mr Jason Randall for coordinating
this wonderful event. This year’s song was ‘Let it go’ from
the movie ‘Frozen’. The lyrics carry a message for the boys
as they move from the College: that it is the time to test
their limits and break through to the next stage of their
lives. I wish them all the best and hope that the Spirit of
Eddies helps them break through their limits but always
remain Eddies’ Men: Strong Men, Kind Men, Gentlemen.
Year 11 Leadership
Today, Friday, is also a pinnacle day for our Year 11’s as they
undertake the voting process for selecting the leaders for
2015. The boys spend the day at the Ipswich Showgrounds
where they hear from three guest speakers talk about
their experiences in being a Man of Action, Man of Words
and Man of Character. We are once again privileged to
have three distinguished Old Boys come and speak to the
boys and thank Mr Tim Young, Mr Gerard Pender and
Mr Michael Grieve for their time and efforts. Later that
night the boys will celebrate at the Year 11 social at the
Ipswich Railway Workshops. Thank you to Ms Baker for
organising both significant events for our students.
Year 12 Final Days
With the Year 12s entering the final days of their schooling
it is likely they are going to want to celebrate. There are still
a number of significant events remaining for the Year 12s
including; final exams, Valedictory Dinner, Year 12 outing
and final assembly. We insist that our boys come to school
in an appropriate way to finish their schooling. Students
who do not attend in appropriate way will be asked to
return home. I ask that you discuss this important issue
with your young man.
QPS Party Safe Program
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) Party Safe program
provides party hosts, guests and parents with resources
and information on organising and sharing an enjoyable,
safe and lawful party.
The Party Safe program also encourages party hosts to
register their party with local police. Registration allows
police to supply the party host with some great advice and
resources, such as Party Safe wristbands, brochures and
posters. It also ensures that, if things do go wrong on the
night, police have the information necessary to effectively
deal with issues.
The QPS, Drug and Alcohol Coordination Unit (DACU)
coordinates the Party Safe program and the Party Safe
materials are available through the QPS Party Safe website:

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
Hello, again. Hard to believe that we are
fast approaching the end of yet another
year.
Examination Block
The term’s examination block begins for year 12’s on Friday
7 November, year 11’s on Friday 21 November and junior
students on Monday 24 November.
Unable to attend a scheduled examination
Should a situation arise that prevents your son/ward from
attending his scheduled examination then please contact:
Senior students – Mrs Angela Fergus OR Junior students –
Ms Clare Turner.
Arrangements will be made to accommodate the completion
of the exam at a later time, although the conclusion of the
school year may make this rescheduling impossible.
Course Outlines
Detailed course outlines for all senior and junior
mathematics subjects can be found on the college’s student
portal. They are an invaluable tool, showing the entire term’s
course of study at a glance. Please use these documents to
focus and direct exam revision.
Revision Material
Revision sheets and recommended textbook questions
etc can be found at the Student Portal. Students are also
encouraged to repeat previous homework tasks – practise
makes perfect! Hot Maths and Mathletics are also valuable
sources of consolidation exercises and activities.
Calculators in Examinations
It’s very important that each and every student has a scientific
calculator for their upcoming maths exam. Students that
neglect to bring a calculator to their examination will
be provided with said equipment but will also be issued
with an academic detention for failure to follow College
procedures. If all efforts to acquire a calculator (either
buying or borrowing) should prove too difficult then please
ask your son to contact myself PRIOR to the scheduled
examination, so that arrangements can be made to lend
him the necessary device.
Australian Mathematics Competition
On Thursday 7 August, approximately 90 of the College’s
most capable mathematicians competed in the Australian
Mathematics Competition.
The competition was
introduced in Australia in 1978 and has become the
largest single event on the Australian Education Calendar,
allowing students to attempt the same tasks, on the same
day in about 40 countries.
The Competition is administered by the non-profit
Australian Mathematics Trust, which ensures the highest
quality of question paper, renowned over its lifetime for its
originality and mathematical and typographical accuracy.
http://sec.qld.edu.au/
The aims of the Competition are three-fold: To highlight
the importance of Mathematics as a curriculum subject,
to give students an opportunity to discover talent in
mathematics; to provide resources for the classroom and
general discussion
Students are asked to solve thirty problems in 75 minutes.
Problems get progressively more difficult until the end,
when they are challenging to even the most gifted student.
A significant number of competitors were rewarded with a
Certificate of Distinction for their achievement. That is,
they achieved in the top 15% of their year (or top 25% for
senior students). Fabulous results! From Year 8 certificates
of distinction are awarded to: Oisin Hayes, Philip Cen and
Caleb Donald. From Year 10 certificates of distinction
are awarded to: Thomas Haag, Jayden Mc Phillips, Toby
Weight. From Year 11 certificates of distinction are awarded
to: Liam Brandish, Harrison Cochrane, Henry Creamer,
Lachlan Knox, Noah Seymour. From year 12 certificates of
distinction are awarded to: Jayhden Bishop, Jack Jorgensen
and Ethan Marriott.
High Distinction certificates (for achievement in the top
5% of their year), were awarded to Stuart Kalinowski (Year
9), Rhys Burgess (Year 10), Nelson Hurry (Year 10) and
David King (Year 12).
Prudence Awards were won by both Rhys Burgess and
Nelson Hurry (Year 10) for their successful completion
of the most consecutive number of test questions, of all St
Edmund’s participants.
Most 2014 participants received a certificate of Credit or
higher award – a fine achievement.
A most sincere thank you goes to Mrs Grieve for her
organisation and conducting of the competition. Her
attention to detail resulted in a very efficiently run activity.
Brain Teaser number 6 solution
The sums of all trios of integers that multiply to 36 gives:
1 + 1 + 36 = 38 1 + 2 + 18 = 21
1 + 3 + 12 = 16
1 + 4 + 9 = 14
1+ 6 + 6 = 13
2 + 2 + 9 = 13
2 + 3 + 6 = 11
3 + 3 + 4 = 10
Since ‘the number on the house next door’ is not enough
information for the salesman to determine the ages of the
children, there must be multiple combinations of integers
that give the same total ie 1 + 1 + 6 = 13 and 2 + 2 + 9 = 13
The mother referred to her oldest child – indicating that a
single child was the eldest of the 3 – leaving only one viable
integer combination, 2,2,9. The eldest child is 9 years old
and the younger are twins, aged 2.
Staff Farewell
A fond farewell goes out to Ms Louise Edwards who is
leaving us to work at St Thomas More College in 2015. The
St Edmund’s Mathematics and Science departments have
been made richer by her tireless contributions and wish her
all the very best in her new endeavour.

I must also bid farewell to the St Edmund’s College
community, with a move to St Laurence’s College in 2015.
I have experienced significant personal, spiritual and
professional growth during my three years at Eddies and
I leave the College with mixed feelings – so very grateful
for the challenges and experience of leadership but so
very, very sad to be leaving a community that made me
feel so very welcome.

TEXT BOOK HIRE 2014
As you would be aware St Edmund’s College operates
a text book hire scheme for the benefit of all students
at the College. The success and viability of this scheme
is contingent upon the timely return of texts in good
condition that allows for their redistribution to students
for use in subsequent years. Unlike other schools, we do
not charge a levy or require students to purchase texts
separately. Often these costs are in the vicinity of $250
to $400. To assist us with the maintenance of the scheme
we require your support in ensuring that your son’s texts

NEWS
Staff and students were privileged to watch the last
performance of Year 12 student Keelan McCoy at the final
Friday College assembly for the year last week. Keelan
sang a very stirring rendition of the Matt Corby song
‘Brother’. He received a standing ovation as a gracious
thank you for sharing his talents with the St Edmund’s
Community over the last five years. We thank Keelan and
wish him all the best for his future in the music industry.
The College Stage Band performance was a very catchy
version of the Maroon 5 hit song ‘Moves Like Jagger’ at the
College Academic Awards night last night. Whilst most
other extra-curricular items have finished for the year, the
music ensembles are still rehearsing hard for end of year
College events.
Last Saturday night saw the presentation of ‘Louder than
Words’ musical showcase by the Combined Colleges’
Choir. This was a very entertaining evening with a myriad
of talent on show. Congratulations to all students involved
in this concert and well done to Mrs Fiona Cole for putting
together an amazing night.
Instrumental music lessons are in full swing for the term.
Be sure to check your lesson times on the notice board
outside of K205 or on the student portal. Please be on
time for your lesson.

SEC Swimming
COAST TRIP - Term 4 - Friday 14th November
Dear Students and Parents,
SEC Swimming training continues this week. We have had
an excellent roll up from the Year 8s with some sessions
having up to sixteen in attendance. The Year 10s are also
strong in numbers, however, the Year 9s and 11s need to lift
their attendance as a group. Remember, new Year 7s and
8s for 2015 are also invited to attend now. Please see below.
The senior swim squad also continues its hard work both in
the pool and gym. Spots for the swim camp are closing fast,
so get payment into the College Reception Office as soon
as possible to secure your spot. Notes were handed out at
assembly and have also been emailed as well. Further details
are listed below. This will be opened up to new students
soon, so current students need to book their spots now!
Term 4 SEC SWIM Training
• Years 8 and 9 - Mondays 3.00 to 4.00pm, Wednesdays
from 6:30am and Fridays from 6:30am.
• Years 10 and 11 - Mondays from 6:30am, Wednesdays
from 6:30am and Fridays from 3.00 to 4.00pm.
• Getting to the school gym in the mornings or at the open
break times is also a good step for the boys to improve
and maintain Conditioning, Core and Strength for all
sports.
• The new Year 7s and 8s for 2015 are welcome to attend
any morning (from 6:30am) or afternoon (from 3:30pm)
sessions in Term 4 with the junior squad. This started on
Tuesday 7th October 2014. They will just need to introduce
themselves to coaches Mr Stephen Critoph and Mr Brad
Thurlow to work out training days from there.
• Members of the Senior Club Swim Squad continue in the
pool and gym with Mr Critoph. Check details with him.
Years 8 to 11 SEC Swimming boys will be bused down from
school to the Coast for a swimming session at the beach
at the start of second break and they will have dinner on
the way home. Head Swim Coach, Mr Stephen Critoph and
SEC swimming staff, including myself will be supervising.
Boys should return to the College that same evening by
6:30pm. To be eligible for an invitation, the boys must
have attended at least ten of the Term 4 SEC swim training
sessions by that time.
2015 Swim Camp - 17th-19th of January 2015
Save this date - Cost is $120.
Payments to the College Reception (3810 4400) either via
cheque, money order, cash, EFPTOS or credit card. In
order to attend this camp, boys need to be attending Term
4 training this year consistently (two to four sessions a
week). Remember we will have two whole new year levels
coming in 2015 (new Year 7s and 8s) so there will be fierce
competition for camp spots. New Year 7s and 8s will be
offered a place to attend the Term 4 training so they will be
keen to attend Swim Camp.
Remember, gentlemen, you are improving under coaches
Mr Thurlow and Mr Critoph and the only way to further
that improvement is by training more consistently.
Cheers.
Mr Chad de Waard, SEC Swimming Co-ordinator
If boys are unable to attend their specific session they can
organise with Mr Critoph or myself to attend another
session instead.
CRICKET @ SEC
Preparations for the 2015 AIC Cricket Season are
underway with our First and Second XI squads as
well as our 2015 Year 9 and 10s having commenced
training.
Please see the adjacent schedule for training times.
Identified students have been notified, but all boys
interested in playing Cricket for the College in
2015 are welcome to attend the relevant training
sessions.
Thanks to Mr Chad Baxter (Senior Skills Coach),
Mr Jan de Beer (First XI Coach), Mr Dan King
(Second XI Coach), Mr Ben Litchfield (10A Coach),
Mr Charles Costello (9A Coach) and Mr Jordan
McCamley (Strength & Conditioning Coach) who
will be guiding the boys through the pre-season
