FREE TRIPS EDITION
A very warm welcome to the Wandsworth
Council funded free trip edition of our
newsletter!
We are most grateful for the continued
support of the Council, who have been
funding this project for several years.
Free Trips
Members are welcome to chose ONE free
trip from the outings listed overleaf. You will
see the usual favourites such as Hastings
and Eastbourne in addition to a couple of
new destinations, Bexhill and Bognor. Please
call us to book as soon as you can as these
trips are really popular.
Standard Programme
From 5 September we will be continuing
with our regular programme. We are making
return trips to Penshurst, Leeds Castle and
popular garden centres such as Polhill and
Woodcote. Full details are on the reverse of
this newsletter. You may book as many trips
as you like.
Using the Shopping Shuttle
We often get asked whether Silver Day
Trippers can use our door-to-door
shopping shuttle and the answer is
“YES”. You might use buses without a
problem, but carrying a couple of bags
at the same time as hanging on for
dear life is not recommended. So why
not give the shuttle a try! Do get in
touch for further details.
New Members
The Silver Daytrippers’ club operates a range
of outings throughout the year for senior
citizens residing in Wandsworth.
The aim of the club is to encourage exercise
and lifelong learning for older people, thus
helping to combat isolation and loneliness.
It is easy (and free) to register. Just call us on
8675 3812 for an application form.
These outings are for active pensioners
(no wheelchair users, frames etc). We
have a separate programme called “Road
Runner” for people with mobility
difficulties.

helps with office work and is an award-winning baker of
cakes for the Nightingale Charity Walk.
Wandsworth Council Free Trips
All trips will be collecting passengers from our standard minibus stops between 9am and 10.05am.

A return to Penshurst Place
Leeds Castle—”The loveliest Castle in
Following our highly successful visit in April,
we have booked a further visit to Penshurst
Place, near Tonbridge on Monday 12
September.
Described as “the grandest and most
perfectly preserved example of a fortified
manor house in all England”, the Sidney
family home of Penshurst Place has been the
place for poetic inspiration and lavish royal
hospitality for hundreds of years.
The house at Penshurst showcases a
marvellous mix of paintings, tapestries and
furniture, with a unique medieval Baron's Hall
and decadent staterooms on show.
The gardens are a particular delight, covering
48 acres of ancient woodland and formal
gardens.
There is a café and restaurant on-site so we
should be well looked after.
the World”
On Thursday 22 September we will be
visiting the wonderful Leeds Castle, near
Maidstone.
Leeds
Castle
has
been
a
Norman
stronghold, a palace used by Henry VIII and
his first wife Catherine of Aragon, a
Jacobean country house, and in the 21st
century, it has become one of the most
visited historic buildings in Britain.
There are lots of lovely walks to enjoy
around the estate and some breathtaking
views of the castle.
As usual there are plenty of places offering
refreshment opportunities.
