According to the last report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry
of November 2012, there are over 1,800 arbitrarily detained prisoners for offenses concerning freedom of opinion or political activities. About 150 of
them are in prison since 2011.
In Mauritania, the Dar Naim prison in Nouakchott currently
hosts more than 692 people, whom more than 300 are on
remand, for a total capacity of 400 people.
As part of its project "Legal and judicial assistance to vulnerable
people: women and under-age children", ASF Mauritania provided assistance to about fifty minors prosecuted before the
investigating judge.
FOCUS ON :
Bahrain : Nabeel Rajab, human Rights defender, sentenced to
three years in jail.
The 16 August 2012, Nabeel Rajab, president
of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and
director of the Gulf Centre for Human Rights
has been sentenced to 3 years in prison for
illegal gathering.
On 10 July 2012, in another case, Nabeel
Rajab was condemned to 3 months in prison
for sending a tweet about the Prime Minister
of Bahrain.
The ASF Network actively supports the lawyers
of Nabeel Rajab, who appealed these decisions
and the network will be at their side, through the presence of ASF Sweden,
during the verdict due on 11 December 2012.
Cameroon : homosexuality still on trial
Roger Mbede was sentenced the 28 April 2011 to three years in prison
for "homosexuality and attempted
homosexuality" based only on SMS
exchanged and without any other
evidence. Victim of abuse and sexual
assault in prison, Roger Mbede was
finally provisionally released July 17,
2012. The prosecutor recognized the
inconsistencies of the file and admitted
that the constituent elements of the
offense of the crime of homosexuality were not fulfilled.
However the Judges considered the charges were sufficient to be
tried. Verdict: December 17, 2012. The lawyers of Mr Mbede hope the
acquittal of their client.
ASF SWitzerland went to Yaoundé to defend Mr. Roger Mbede besides
ASF Cameroon and the association ADEFHO.
GOOD NEWS
Djibouti – journalist Ahmed Hussein Farah has been released under judicial supervision.
On 8 August 2012, Mr. Farah was arrested and accused of escaping judicial review to which he was subjected since the 23 of June
2011, following accusations of "participation in an insurrectionary movement" back in February 2011.
On sunday 18 November 2012, the Djiboutian Court of Appeal acceded to the 4 th request for release of the journalist Houssein Ahmed
Farah, journalist at “The Voice of Djibouti”, member of the Djiboutian League for Human Rights.
However, the Indictment Division also decided to maintain the proceedings. The lawyer of the Network, and the Djiboutian lawyer will
introduce a cassation appeal on the invalidity of the proceedings.

In March 2012, Jalila Khamis Koko, teacher and activist of Human Rights, was kidnapped in her home in
Khartoum Still in custody, She was charged with five counts, including three punishable by death penalty.
In October 2012, the Sudanese journalist Somaya Ibrahim Hundosa was abducted and physically tortured by the security personnel.
In November 2012, 34 women were arrested in Kadugli in the Nuba Mountains, and were forced by
security to answer all their telephone calls, through an audio recording system.
TRAINING OF ASF NETWORK:
Greeted by Clifford Chance in Paris, 16 lawyer members of Avocats Sans Frontières Brazil, Cameroon, France, Guinea, Mali,
Mauritania, Peru, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Sweden, Switzerland, and Togo together to participate in a training
session on emergency missions.
They worked together from 9 to 11 October 2012 in order to strengthen their experience and capabilities on the various
possible emergency actions that can be carried out by the ASF Network in the world.
