Jahresrückblick: 2005 am Salzburg Airport
Rückblick auf ein außergewöhnlich erfolgreiches
Jahr
Der Salzburger Flughafen blickt wieder auf ein wahres
Rekordjahr zurück. Die Passagierzahlen sind um ca.
20% auf rund 1,7 Millionen Passagiere gestiegen.
Dieser Zuwachs ist vor allem auf die Vielzahl von
neuen Strecken zurückzuführen, die Ende 2004
bekannt gegeben bzw. begonnen wurden.
Auch 2005 ging es w ieder steil aufw ärts
Im November und Dezember 2004 begann HLX – Hapag
Lloyd Express mit ihren Niedrigpreisverbindungen von Berlin,
Hamburg, Hannover und Köln in die Mozartstadt.
Beeindruckend: Die Kras Air IL96 - Highlight des Russenfestiv als
Exklusiv : Saudi Aramco B767 zum ersten Mal in Salzburg
Bereits zwei Tage nach Beginn des neuen Jahres ging es so
richtig los: Am Sonntag, den 02.Januar kam der Großteil der
russischen Skigäste in Salzburg an. Dies war ein Tag
vollgepackt mit Erstlandungen, wie z.B. VIM Avia, Sibir oder
Shar Inc.. Der wohl schönste Besucher des Tages war Kras
Air mit Ilyushin 96-300, die sogar den Start auf Piste 16
durchführte. Insgesamt konnten an diesem Tag zum ersten
Mal in der 79jährigen Geschichte des Flughafens drei IL96
Landungen gezählt werden. Sechs Tage später begann
Norwegian mit ihrer Saisonlinie nach Oslo. Am 10. Jänner
begann Styrian Spirit mit ihren neuen Linienverbindungen
nach Paris CDG (2x tgl.) und Maribor. Als weitere neue
Airline im Winterchartergeschäft konnte im ersten Monat
des Jahres noch FlyMe auf ihren Incomingcharterflügen aus
Schweden begrüßt werden. Auf der VIP-Seite tat sich auch
noch was: Die Boeing B767 N767A des saudi-arabischen
Konzerns: Saudi Aramco landete erstmals auf dem
Mozartflughafen. Inzwischen hat sich dieser Flieger schon
zu einem Stammgast entwickelt.
Der Februar brachte im Rahmen der Zusatzflüge zu den
englischen „Half term breaks“ viele Zusatzflüge. Besondere
Aufmerksamkeit fand hier wieder die B757-200 von Titan
Airways und die Erstlandung des Monarch A300 in neuer
Bemalung. Ein weiteres Schmankerl war die schneebedingte
Ausweichlandung der Boeing B737-200 N787WH aus
München. Dieser Flieger wird u.a. von den Miami Dolphins

benutzt.
Ausgew ichen: Statt nach München kam die B737-200 N787WH nach
SZG
Zusätzlich: Monarch A300 zu den englischen "Half term breaks"
Der Biathlon Weltcup in der Ramsau und die kurz darauf
stattfindenden Weltmeisterschaften bei Khanty-Mansik
bescherten dem Flughafen im März einige gern gesehene
Zusatzflüge: Neben zusätzlichen Norwegian Flügen und
ähnlichen schickte die Austrian Airlines Gruppe die in das
neue AUA-Farbenkleid lackierte B767-300 an die Salzach.
UT Air übernahm mit mehreren Tu154M Flügen den
Transport zur russischen Wettkampfstätte.

Am ersten Wochenende im April endete der Wintercharter
am Mozartflughafen. Zum Abschied kam MyTravel mit einer
B767-300 und einem brandneu bemalten A330-200. Bei
schönstem Wetter verabschiedete sich auch die
wöchentliche Domodedovo Airlines IL96-300 für den Sommer
aus Salzburg. Dieser bildschöne Tag bleibt vielen Salzburger
Spottern nicht nur wegen der wunderbaren Bilder ein
unvergesslicher Tag! Langsam begann der Sommerflugplan
seine Neuerungen zum Vorschein zu bringen. HLX setzte
während dieser Flugplanperiode aus Berlin und Köln vor
allem seine neu gemietete Fokker 100 ein. Niki verband
erstmals bis zu 7mal wöchentlich die Mozartstadt mit der
Baleareninsel Mallorca.

Überraschend: Star Airlines L1011-100 9L-LDN
Neues HLX-Flottenmitglied im Salzburg-Einsatz: Fokker 100
Selten: Air Slov akia führte im Mai einen Subcharter durch
Unvergesslich wird für alle Spotter der Mai 2005 bleiben.
Überraschend wurde Salzburg für 10 Wochen lang die
Heimat eines Lockheed L1011-100 Tristars. Die in Salzburg
beheimatete Flugschule „BFS- Business Flight Salzburg“
prüfte in dieser Zeit, ob man das Flugzeug ins
österreichische Register aufnehmen und ab Österreich
betreiben könnte. Am Abend des 02. Mai landete so das
Star Air Flugzeug mit der Kennung 9L-LDN. Die
Flugzeugenthusiasten hatten große Freude mit diesem
Vogel: Immer wieder änderte sich das Erscheinungsbild.
Nachdem zuerst einige Teile der Schriften entfernt wurden
um für den „operated by BFS“ – Titel Platz zu schaffen,
wurden über die Wochen hinweg nach und nach alle
Elemente der Bemalung entfernt, die auf den Vorbesitzer
hindeuteten. Ebenso überraschend wie er kam, ist er dann
auch wieder im Juli abgeflogen. Doch der Mai bot mehr als
nur die Landung dieses wahrlich geheimnisvollen
Flugzeuges. Am 04. Mai wurde im Rahmen einer
großartigen Feier das neuen Amadeus Terminal 2 in seiner
Funktion als Eventlocation eingeweiht. Damit kann der
Flughafen nun leer stehende Kapazitäten im Sommer für
Veranstaltungen aller Art vermieten.
Leise: 3 Jahre nach der letzten Landung: Bac 1-11 w ieder in Salzburg
Wecheslhaft: Der Tristar hat alle Star Air Titel v erloren
Das Jahr der historischen Flugzeuge ging weiter: Im Juni
besuchte uns nach 3 jähriger Abstinenz wieder eine Bac 111. Die rumänische Mia Air entsandte eine kurze Bac 1-11400 nach Salzburg für einen Gastronomie Charter. Zwei
neue Sommercharter Gäste konnten zu Beginn des
Sommers in Salzburg auch begrüßt werden. Im Auftrag von
Neckermann flog Nordic Leisure jeden Sonntag morgen
einen Charterflug nach Palma de Mallorca. Im SommerIncoming-Bereich führte erstmals Air Malta Flüge aus
England durch. Neue Charterdestination war Bournemouth.
Als Fluggesellschaft für diese Flüge wurde European Air
Charter verpflichtet, welche mit der Boeing B737-200 einen
sehr erfreulichen und photointensiven Flieger einsetzte.

Für einen Flughafen mitten im Kontinent ist der Besuch von
Wasserflugzeugen etwas besonderes: Im Rahmen eines
Wasserflugzeugtreffens am Wolfgangsees, zum Jubiläum
der ersten österreichischen Wasserflugzeugverbindung von
Wien aus, gab es auch einen Besuch am Hangar 7. Viele
der am Treffen beteiligten Fluggeräte flogen somit zum
Salzburger Flughafen. Mitte Juli brachte Saudi Arabian
Airlines wieder Sommergäste des Könighauses zum Urlaub
im Seengebiet.
Die Urlaubsfreuden wurden jedoch durch den Tod des
saudiarabischen Königs Fahd Anfang August unterbrochen.
Dieser unerfreuliche Umstand brachte jedoch einige
zusätzliche Flugzeuge nach Salzburg. Zunächst flogen die
Familienangehörigen wieder nach Hause. Wenige Tage
später nutzte dann der Bundespräsident Deutschlands, Hr.
Köhler, den Salzburger Flughafen als seinen Startflughafen
für seinen Flug zur Inthronisation des neuen saudiarabischen
Königs. Dafür benutzte er den VIP - Airbus A310 der
Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Im Vorfeld der Salzburger
Festspiele empfing der österreichische Bundeskanzler
Staats- und Regierungschefs aus Südosteuropa in die
Mozartstadt. Wiederrum kam eine Bac 1-11 an die Salzach,
dieses Mal von Romavia. Aber das musikalische Ereignis
zog auch Opernfans aus aller Welt an. Anna Netrebko und
Rolando Vilazon bescherten dem Airport viele Bizjets,
darunter auch einige größere Exemplare, wie zum Beispiel
die DC9-15HK3 der us-amerikanischen Pharmair Corp. und
einen BBJ der arabischen Arabasco Flight Operations.

Im September erfolgte der Markteintritt von Styrian Spirit in
den Kärntner Markt. Jeweils einmal täglich startet nun am
Abend die letzte Maschine aus Zürich zum Weiterflug nach
Klagenfurt. Am nächsten Morgen kommt das Flugzeug
pünktlich zum ersten Flug in die Schweiz wieder nach
Salzburg. Farbenfrohster Gast des Monats war, der zu
dieser Zeit kürzlich von Air Jamaica übernommene, A320
von Eirjet, der auf einem European Air Charter Flug zum
Einsatz kam. Der Airbus trug noch die bunte Bemalung des
Vorbesitzers. Die einzig flugfähige Li 2, ein russischer
Lizenzbau der DC3, besuchte Ende des Monats den am
Flughafen ansässigen DC3-Dakota Club.

Wie bis dahin in jedem Monat, gab es auch im Oktober
einen wirklich besonderen Jet in Salzburg zu bestaunen: Die
SkyOne B727-200 kam mit einer exklusiven amerikanischen
Reisegruppe
nach
Österreich.
Dabei
zeigte
der
pechschwarze Dreistrahler ein bis dahin unbekanntes neues
Leitwerksdesign.
In November gab es die einzige Meldung des Jahres, die
flugplantechnisch nicht positiv für den Flughafen war. Mit 03.
November 2005 stellte Air Alps die dreimal täglich bedienten
Linienflüge nach Amsterdam ersatzlos ein. Dieser Schritt
geschah im Rahmen des plötzlichen Rückzuges der
Fluggesellschaft aus dem österreichischen Markt.

Zum Leidwesen unserer Linzer Kollegen meinte es Petrus
Ende November und Anfang Dezember sehr gut mit uns.
Statt einer Vielzahl von wetterbedingten Ausweichern
„sponserten“ Salzburgflüge in den 2 letzten Monaten des
Jahres nur 4 Ausweichflüge dem oberösterreichischen
Flughafen.
Anfang Dezember begann wieder die Zeit der saisonalen
Linienflugverbindungen von FlyBE, Norwegian, Sterling und
Thomsonfly. Thomsonfly fliegt in diesem Winter neben
Coventry auch das südenglische Bournemouth an. Coventry
wird aber über den Winterflugplan hinaus, im Sommer 2006
weiterbedient werden. Ein norwegischer Low Cost Carrier
schickt seit 03. Dezember auch wieder seine „Real
Norwegians“ an die Salzach. Am selben Tag begann
SkyEurope mit ihren ganzjährigen Linienverbindungen nach
Barcelona und Manchester. Warschau wird im Moment noch

Ganzjahresdestination werden. Eine Autopräsentation im
Hangar 7 bescherte dem Flughafen Mitte Dezember eine
Vega Airlines Antonov 12. Der echte Skicharterverkehr
begann langsam mit dem 17. Dezember, wobei der echte

wird. Zuvor
feiert der Flughafen am 20. Dezember ein Wiedersehen mit
einem alten Bekannten: Aer Lingus kommt nach 2jähriger
Abstinenz wieder in die Mozartstadt, aber nicht mehr im
Charterflug, sondern im saisonalen Linienflug! Zum Ende des
Jahres nehmen die russischen Charterflüge wieder steil zu
und werden ihren Höhepunkt Anfang des neuen Jahres
erreichen.
Optimistisch kann wieder der Blick voraus ins Mozartjahr
gehen. Der Flughafen Salzburg wird 2006 sein 80jähriges
Bestehen feiern. Für den Sommerflugplan gibt es bereits
jetzt die ersten positiven Nachrichten: Thomsonfly fliegt
neben den bereits erwähnten Linienflügen nach Coventry
erstmals auch Charterflüge nach Doncaster und
Bournemouth. Ryanair wird ab 04. April eine Linieverbindung
nach Brüssel Charleroi aufnehmen. Gerüchteweise hört man
von einer Aufstockung der Parisflüge auf 3mal täglich. Dublin
– Linienflüge sind laut irischen Luftfahrtkreisen angedacht.
Wünschenswert wäre, wenn die lokalen Reiseveranstalter
und Reisebüros nun endlich auch einmal alle nach Salzburg
bestehenden Flüge nutzen würden, um auch einen
entsprechenden Outgoing – Anteil sicherzustellen. Somit
könnten sicherlich einige Saisonverbindungen das ganze
Jahr über profitabel bedient werden. Airlines täten gut daran,
Salzburg auch als eine Alternative zum Münchner Flughafen
zu bewerben. Mit den Verbindungen ab Salzburg haben die
Passagiere den großen Vorteil, dass sie das Star-AllianzHochpreis-Monopol umgehen können und eine viel billigere
Alternative nützen können, besonders in Richtung
Großbritannien und Nordeuropa. Wenn, wie deutsche
Medien schon richtig erkannt haben, „Österreich das
bessere Deutschland“ ist, dann ist Salzburg sicherlich das
bessere München!

On Monday, the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs
was under the impression that the plane had landed in
Finland. On Thursday it came out that the aviation
authority Finavia had made a mistaken entry in its
records.
Suspicions have been raised that the flight might
have been used for the transport of prisoners from
Tunisia to a secret detention facility operated in
Lithuania by the CIA.
According to the flight plan, the plane was supposed
to arrive in Finland, but landing records show that it
never did.
“A flight plan to Finland arrived, but the arrival of
the plane was not invoiced”, says Elina Kalliokoski,
chief of flight information for Finavia. “We certainly bill
every plane that lands here.”
False routing information for flights was a
diversionary tactic by which the CIA would cover up its
controversial extraordinary rendition flights, says
Martin Scheinin, who has investigated the CIA
prisoner flight programme on behalf of the United
Nations.
“As part of the plans for the US operations, a false
destination was reported for the flights, and the change
was not made until the plane was airborne. It had
previously been known that suspicious flights
specifically to Lithuania would use Helsinki as the
declared destination”, Schenin says in an e-mail
message.

Lithuania from 2002 to 2006. The human rights
organisation Amnesty International has suspected that
Helsinki may have been used as a stopover for flights
taking prisoners to the centre.
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of
Transport and Communications, and Finavia released
flight information on Thursday, which included
information on those who paid for landing at HelsinkiVantaa Airport. The information makes it easier to
investigate possible CIA connections.
Officials released a list of flights already a week
ago, but then the information on the companies
involved was missing. At the time officials felt that they
were business secrets, but this view has changed.
Questions had been raised at the Foreign Ministry
about the missing departure data for N733MA already
on Monday when Helsingin Sanomat asked about the
matter. At that time Päivi Kaukoranta, Director
General of Legal Services at the Foreign Ministry, had
said that Finavia thought that this was a computer
glitch.
After Helsingin Sanomat reported on gaps in flight
information of the plane, the Foreign Ministry was given
a separate report on the matter from Finavia.
“This is very awkward for us. Naturally we thought
that the information that was sent to us would have
been correct”, Kaukoranta says.
At Finavia, Elina Kalliokoski says that the
information on the list put out by the Foreign Ministry
was from the flight plan, and that landing information
was used to check up on flight information.
Information that N733MA would have landed was
missing from the list that was released on Thursday.
Kalliokoski says that this means that the flight plan had
been altered, or that the flight had been cancelled.
According to a Lithuanian report, the flight was not
cancelled – it actually landed in at Palanga airport.
There is another apparent discrepancy in the
information published on Thursday concerning
Lithuania.
Two entries were made concerning a flight from
Helsinki to Washington on September 20th, 2004.
According to one entry, the plane arrived in Finland
directly from Bagram in Afghanistan. According to the
other one, the origin of the flight was unknown.
Finavia says that additional information was added
after the flight plans were revised, and flight information
was accidentally completely recreated.
Amnesty International reports nevertheless that the
same plane flew to Lithuania either before or after it
landed in Finland.

Inside Romania's secret CIA prison

In northern Bucharest, in a busy residential neighbourhood minutes from the heart of the
capital city, is a secret the Romanian government has long tried to protect.
For years, the CIA used a government building — codenamed "Bright Light" — as a
makeshift prison for its most valuable detainees. There it held al-Qa'ida operatives Khalid
Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of 9/11, and others in a basement prison before they
were ultimately transferred to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2006, according to former US
intelligence officials familiar with the location and inner workings of the prison.
The existence of a CIA prison in Romania has been widely reported, but its location has
never been made public. The Associated Press and German public television ARD located
the former prison and learned details of the facility where harsh interrogation tactics were
used. ARD's programme on the CIA prison is set to air today.
The Romanian prison was part of a network of so-called black sites that the CIA operated
and controlled overseas in Thailand, Lithuania and Poland. All the prisons were closed by
May 2006, and the CIA's detention and interrogation programme ended in 2009.
Unlike the CIA's facility in Lithuania's countryside or the one hidden in a Polish military
installation, the CIA's prison in Romania was not in a remote location. It was hidden in plain
sight, a couple blocks off a major boulevard on a street lined with trees and homes, along
busy train tracks.
The building is used as the National Registry Office for Classified Information, which is also
known as ORNISS. Classified information from Nato and the European Union is stored there.
Former intelligence officials both described the location of the prison and identified pictures
of the building.
In an interview at the building in November, senior ORNISS official Adrian Camarasan said
the basement is one of the most secure rooms in all of Romania. But he said Americans
never ran a prison there.
"No, no. Impossible, impossible," he said in an ARD interview for its "Panorama" news
broadcast, as a security official monitored the interview.
The CIA prison opened for business in the autumn of 2003, after the CIA decided to empty
the black site in Poland, according to former US officials.
Shuttling detainees into the facility without being seen was relatively easy. After flying into
Bucharest, the detainees were brought to the site in vans. CIA operatives then drove down

a side road and entered the compound through a rear gate that led to the actual prison.
The detainees could then be unloaded and whisked into the ground floor of the prison and
into the basement.
The basement consisted of six prefabricated cells, each with a clock and arrow pointing to
Mecca, the officials said. The cells were on springs, keeping them slightly off balance and
causing disorientation among some detainees.
The CIA declined to comment on the prison.
During the first month of their detention, the detainees endured sleep deprivation and were
doused with water, slapped or forced to stand in painful positions, several former officials
said. Waterboarding, the notorious interrogation technique that simulates drowning, was
not performed in Romania, they said.
After the initial interrogations, the detainees were treated with care, the officials said. The
prisoners received regular dental and medical checkups. The CIA shipped in Halal food to
the site from Frankfurt, Germany, the agency's European centre for operations. Halal meat
is prepared under religious rules similar to kosher food.
Former US officials said that because the building was a government installation, it provided
excellent cover. The prison didn't need heavy security because area residents knew it was
owned by the government. People wouldn't be inclined to snoop in postcommunist Romania, with its extensive security apparatus known for spying on the
country's own citizens.
Human rights activists have urged the Eastern European countries to investigate the roles
their governments played in hosting the prisons in which interrogation techniques such as
waterboarding were used. Officials from these countries continue to deny these prisons ever
existed.
"We know of the criticism, but we have no knowledge of this subject," Romanian President
Traian Basescu said in a September interview with AP.
The CIA has tried to close the book on the detention programme, which President Barack
Obama ended shortly after taking office.
"That controversy has largely subsided," the CIA's top lawyer, Stephen Preston, said at a
conference this month.
But details of the prison network continue to trickle out through investigations by
international bodies, reporters and human rights groups. "There have been years of official
denials," said Dick Marty, a Swiss politician who led an investigation into the CIA secret
prisons for the Council of Europe. "We are at last beginning to learn what really happened in
Bucharest."
During the Council of Europe's investigation, Romania's foreign affairs minister assured
investigators in a written report that, "No public official or other person acting in an official
capacity has been involved in the unacknowledged deprivation of any individual, or
transport of any individual while so deprived of their liberty." That report also described
several other government investigations into reports of a secret CIA prison in Romania and
said: "No such activities took place on Romanian territory."
Reporters and human rights investigators have previously used flight records to
tie Romania to the secret prison program. Flight records for a Boeing 737 known to be used
by the CIA showed a flight from Poland to Bucharest in September 2003. Among the
prisoners on board, according to former CIA officials, were Mohammed and Walid bin

Attash, who has been implicated in the bombing of the USS Cole.
Later, other detainees — Ramzi Binalshibh, Abd al-Nashiri and Abu Faraj al-Libi — were also
moved to Romania. A deceptive al-Libi, who was taken to the prison in June 2005, provided
information that would later help the CIA identify Osama bin Laden's trusted courier, a man
who unwittingly led them the CIA to bin Laden himself.
Court documents recently discovered in a lawsuit have also added to the body of evidence
pointing to a CIA prison in Romania. The files show CIA contractor Richmor Aviation, a New
York-based charter company, operated flights to and from Romania along with other
locations including Morocco and the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay.
For the CIA officers working at the secret prison, the assignment wasn't glamorous. The
officers served 90-day tours, slept on the compound and ate their meals there, too. Officers
were prevented from the leaving the base after their presence in the neighbourhood stoked
suspicion. One former officer complained that the CIA spent most of its time baby-sitting
detainees like Binalshibh and Mohammed whose intelligence value diminished as the years
passed.
The Romanian and Lithuanian sites were eventually closed in the first half of 2006 before
CIA Director Porter Goss left the job. Some of the detainees were taken to Kabul, where the
CIA could legally hold them before they were sent to Guantanamo. Others were sent back
to their native countries.
