Founder Biography
Michael Sapienza is a seasoned executive
with more than 25 years of experience
focused in marketing, business development, new product introductions and business starts. The majority of his corporate
career has been devoted to two well-known
organizations, Wendy’s International and
CheckFree Corporation.
Domestic and International Marketing
Michael joined Wendy’s as a marketing supervisor in 1978
and progressed through the ranks to become Wendy’s first
Vice President of New Products and Marketing Analysis in
1985. Over the years, Michael served in numerous capacities
throughout the domestic marketing department and the international division. His global experience included product
launches, advertising agency selection and marketing support
programs throughout Europe and the Pacific Rim. On the
domestic front, Michael’s more notable achievements include:
■ Initiation of Wendy’s first formal programs for market
research, sales promotion analysis and business planning
■ Development of structured processes to assess alternative
advertising messages/campaigns
■ Direction of many profitable new product programs from
concept stage through national introduction. Some of
these included Hot Stuffed Baked Potatoes, the Big (Bacon)
Classic, Wendy’s Lite Menu, and the Taco Salad.
■ After 10 years of service at Wendy’s, Michael left to join
the then early stage electronic commerce company,
CheckFree Corporation.
New Product Introduction and Business Development
As CheckFree’s first Vice President of Marketing, Michael was
largely responsible for the successful development and national introduction of the CheckFree Electronic Payment Service
(CFEP). Still the core element of CheckFree’s offerings today,
CFEP was the first and only electronic solution that could pay
all bills through the user’s bank of choice. In his initial capacity, Michael directed product strategy, brand development,
advertising, co-operative marketing programs, public relations,
pricing, user retention, product distribution through retail and
channel partners, and corporate communications. During the
first seven years of his tenure, total corporate revenues grew to
a highly profitable $40M with CFEP contributing well over
half of both top and bottom line results.
In 1995, Michael helped CheckFree implement a successful
IPO netting over $70M in new capital. After that his responsibilities included customer service operations, customer
relationship management and business development for
CheckFree’s electronic billing division.
Michael rose to the level of Senior Vice President in 1997 and
managed channel partner programs until he left the company
in 2002. During his 14-year stay, CheckFree grew from a
$5M revenue company to about $500M and a market cap of
$1.4B. Upon leaving CheckFree, Michael joined Secure
Interiors, an early stage cyber security company focused on
cost effective Internet security for the small to mid-size enterprise. Secure Interiors was managed to an exit for investors in
mid-2003, giving rise to Premier Marketing.
Additional Background
Michael is a 1974 graduate of Northwestern University and a
1976 graduate of its Kellogg School of Management. Among
his hobbies and interests are: European sports cars, jazz, golf,
wine, the Northwestern Alumni Association & Wildcat Fund,
Ohio Tech Angels, and the Bexley Education Foundation.
Among his personal qualities are: analysis/process driven,
results orientation, passion for quiet effectiveness, a sense of
urgency, and love for family and fun. Michael is married
with two stepdaughters.
